Luke Hemmings by Grace Maier for L'Officiel Hommes, 2023
Styled by Stephanie Taranu.
Luke Hemmings interviewed exclusively for L'Officiel Liechtenstein
'I love being in the band and they are my brothers for life. One positive benefit of engaging in outside projects, musical or not, is that it helps the band's consistency, by allowing us personal freedoms.
5SOS is at a point where it is owned by the fans who have supported us for years, not just us. We share these moments with rooms full of people around the world and it brings me such real joy in life.'

what makes the anders discourse so frustrating i think is when you know that nearly every single thing people hate him for would have changed so drastically had he been written by someone with just a fraction of empathy for people with mental illness

cole saying he “grew” from spirithood by entering his demon era… yes, yes, my theory that becoming a demon is essential to the physical manifestation process is growing.

Might be a dumb question, but who's that raven-ey gryphon creature that shows up in some of the size charts with Griffin and Pegasus? I don't think I've seen it anyplace else, even when I poked around on your portfolio site. Is there a story there?
Her name's Zivatar (I recently switched up her name and preferred gender, in case anyone finds the old ref sheet)
Tumblr media
She's an example of a lesser known spirit (and it seems I'm doing a good job at keeping it that way lol). She has no human form, and her interest in interacting with people is lukewarm. From a glance, one would probably not be able to tell that she's bonded to her human companion, Mahir (another name change). She's also an example of a gryphon spirit. There are several Griffin-like spirits, many alive and thriving. This is in contrast to Pegasus, who is not doing too great, and the rest of the Pegasus-like spirits have probably bit the dust before humankind even popped into existence. There's just something about their temperament that has gryphons cope much better with permanent spirithood. Unlike Griffin, Zivatar is solitary. On the rare occasion that people spot her, she's either swimming in storm clouds, taunting lightning, relaxing at a remote shrine, or eating up fresh human remains that the aftermath of violent human conflicts offer. She's not keen on coddling Mahir, or even giving him a ride - he has to make do with a horse -, but she'd dislike it if he perished prematurely. She's mildly invested in finding out how his personal journeys will end.
Tumblr media
She's not a fan of Griffin, but she crosses paths with Pegasus relatively often, due to their shared interest in experiencing violently stormy weather. Neither of them like chit-chat, they typically hang out without saying anything to each other for hours on end.

Would you be willing to do Yue x Azula as star-crossed lovers(42)? Of the thingy.
Hello, anon!! Yes I would!
AU where Azula becomes the sun
Star-crossed lovers: Lovers who's attraction for each other is doomed to end in tragedy.
The story of the princess blessed by the moon and princess blessed by the sun was a well known one for people regardless of their nation of origin.
Many children heard about the young Water Tribe girl, sick from birth, who was blessed by the moon spirit. She was given hair as white as snow and some even said she had the ability to communicate with the spirit. Her name was Yue.
The story of the girl blessed by the sun was less known but no less true. The girl, unlike her counterpart, was not sick at birth, but rather strong. She had fire in her eyes, so much so that it was said her eyes burned the color of the sun and her fire was brighter and stronger than anything. Her name was Azula.
But it’s common knowledge that the moon and the sun were not meant to be together. There was a reason they were separated by the night and day. Just as the moon and sun were never meant to be together, Yue and Azula were never meant to be together. In the sky, the moon and sun were separated by miles of space between them. Yue and Azula suffered from a similar struggle of distance.
A distance which only grew when Yue assumed the responsibilities of the moon spirit, saying goodbye to her family and friends to keep the world safe. Azula, alone in a cell and forgotten by the world, didn't have as great a showing when she became a spirit. The fire in her eyes was weak and dying when she was taken away, but, ignited like the strongest fire ever seen when she gained spirithood. Her fire suddenly felt as if it could never go out.
It’s common knowledge that the moon and the sun were not meant to be together. But every rule has an exception and, for the sun and the moon, that exception is a solar eclipse.
"So, you're the sun spirit?" Yue asked.
"I am." Azula confirmed, "And you must be the moon spirit."
"Forgive me if this is too forward, but you don't look like the other spirits around here." Yue said.
"How so?" Azula asked, letting the fire on the end of her hair fall down as she undid her topknot.
"You look too...beautiful and human." Yue admitted, "I've only met one human spirit that was beautiful before: the Painted Lady."
"I probably look this way because I was human. I was human for sixteen years before I became a spirit." Azula told her.
"You were human too?" Yue asked, her eyes growing wide upon finally meeting a spirit like her.
"Too?" Azula asked.
"I was a human myself. I was the Princess of the North Pole, but then this Fire Nation admiral attacked the moon spirit and I took her place. I don't really know how long it's been since the attack, the Spirit World concept of time is tricky, but I remember it very clearly. I remember my father, my people, my home, Sokka-"
"Wait. Sokka as in that Water Tribesmen who traveled with the Avatar?" Azula asked.
"Yes. He was traveling with Avatar Aang." Yue confirmed, “Do you know him?”
Azula made a face, “In a way. He invaded the Fire Nation during a solar eclipse and was the only one with a brain who could see my plan.”
Yue smiled with a light blush coming onto her cheeks, “That sounds like him.” She looked away from Azula before speaking again, “How long has it been? If Sokka is still alive then…”
“It’s been two years since the North Pole siege. Not much time has passed.”
“Two years?” Yue’s eyes grew, “The war-“
“Relax. Your side won.” Azula grumbled, taking a seat away from her.
Because of the solar eclipse, Azula and Yue could pretty much float in the sky and spend the few hours they had just watching over the mortal world. A benefit from being tied to celestial bodies miles in the sky. Yue had watched over the invasion but she hadn’t seen what happened in the tunnels.
“You seem upset by that.” Yue gathered, sitting next to her.
“I was on the Fire Nation side. I was the Fire Nation princess actually.” Azula revealed, earning a look of shock from Yue, “After the war, I was thrown in an asylum because my uncle and brother said I was crazy. They locked me up and threw away the key.”
“I have no experience of being locked away.” Yue admitted, “But I was locked in a marriage with someone I didn’t love. I thought I was doing what was best for my people, my duty as a princess, and…” She brushed her spirit dress, “I guess I am doing something for my people just not in the way I expected.”
“You view this as something for your people?” Azula asked.
“I do. You don’t?”
“Everything I did before this was for my people and my father. I fought in the war, trained hard, became the perfect warrior all to lead my nation to victory and so my father would be proud. When I became a spirit, it was the first time that I didn’t have any of that responsibility. This is the first time I get to do something just for me, no one else. Yes, I bring the sun to the world every day but I also get to visit the dragons when I want, I get to meet the other spirits, spend time watching over people doing things I wish I could have done. I get to be…”
“Free.” Yue added, “That sounds perfect. But….you know we’re not supposed to go near mortals.”
Azula chuckled, “Are you going to tell on me?”
“No. I’ll let it slide this one time.”
“Why do I sense an if?” Azula asked.
“If you promise to take me down there and show me some of your favorite spots.” Yue added, “It’s been a long time since I’ve had someone to really talk to….that isn’t La.”
“It’s a date.”

Hot Take: The Lion Turtle wasn't that out of left field.
Was it a deus ex machina? Yes. Technically. But it wasn't like some sudden dip in writing or like this was unprecedented and had no basis or reasoning in universe. Hear me out. This is Long.
Let's go back to book 1, specifically the book 1 finale. At what point prior to that are we told that there's a spirit that can turn into a giant koi monster and wipe out everyone? We didn't even know about the whole Tui and La thing until we are in the midst of the battle and there is no viable solution. Aang as he is, does not have the ability to solve this problem.
However, Aang is the avatar.
50% of that is having all four elements. It means mastering diciplines, practice, it's skill that you gradually improve on, it's being clever with the tools avalible to you.
But the other 50%, that I feel is too often forgotten, is spirithood, or being the bridge to the spirits. Spirits are not tools. They're explicitly shown to be things that just kinda Do Shit, and Are There. They don't care about the human world for humans' sake, that's the Avatar's job. The spirits are unexplainable. (I am ignoring Korra) Dealing with the spirits isn't something you can learn. There's not really a special technique Aang learns on How To Spirit 101.
But as the Avatar, Aang has the ability to comune with spirits, to seek them out, call to them, ask them for help, and give them help in return. Part of being the Avatar is doing things no one else can, and again, 50% of that comes from having four bending abilities, and the other 50% is his connection to spirits.
The Lion Turtle is the earned pay off of Aang's actions. Aang, like in the Northern Water Tribe, faces a problem in which neither he, nor anyone around him, knows what to do, and just like in the NWT at the twelfth hour, he turns to the spirits. He chooses to find a place where he feels connected, and calls out. He opens himself to a world outside of human control knowing that, as merely human, he is not capable.
It's the same set up.
Aang faces a problem: Giant Invasion/Having to defeat the fire lord
He does everything he physically can: Takes down a dozen ships/Masters three extra elements
But pulls back when he realizes continuing this way will destroy him: Retreats and admits hes in over his head/Refuses to commit violence with the intent to kill because that means sacrificing his values and the last remaining shreds of his people's values.
(PSA: Taking care of your mental/emotional health is just as important as taking care of your physical health)
He opens himself up to other people for solutions: Yue is just like 'you gotta dude :|'/His friends mock him
He chooses to turn to the spirits: Brings it up with Yue and Katara and Yue brings him to the spirit oasis/ Leaves the others to meditate
[Enter Magic Meditation Here]
He Goes To A Weird Spirit Place: Spirit World/Lion Turtle Forest
Fucks Around for a while as he tries to figure out wtf hes supposed to do: talks to spirits and Roku/talks to the avatars and momo (best place of advice obvs)
Finds the spirit he needs to help give him info: Koh+Ocean Spirit/Lion Turtle
Is granted sudden new powers that can solve his impossible situation: Giant Koi/ Energybending
Uses that shit
Saves the day
The end.
And I don't think this is really a cheat for him either. Aang still gives his everything to trying to fight those ships, even after seeing how many there are. He still has to go through all the hassle of the spirits fucking with him.
With the finale, he still admits to Momo that he may have to kill Ozai. He still accepts that, if literally no other solution is avalible, he'll do it even if it means sacrificing himself and his nation. He still has to do the battle to subdue Ozai and still has to risk being internally fucked by bad mojo from Ozai.
He still has to prove himself. In my opinion, he has to prove himself far more in the book three finale than book one. Book one he just kinda takes out some ships and then chats with some spirits and then the Ocean spirit does everything for him.
In the fight with Ozai, AANG had to learn all four elements, HE had to learn the avatar state (even if it conveniently got taken as soon as he did and then given back at dramatic moments), HE had to face Ozai even without the avatar state, HE still tried to reason with Ozai to the end, HE still used the avatar state (apon being gifted with a poke in the back) to fight back, HE still decided to not take the easy way out, HE still commited to and accomplished taking Ozai's bending.
He earned his use of the elements
He earned his use of the Avatar state (prior to lightning bc they couldn't have Aang be op too soon jebdjsbdn)
He continuously believed there has to be another way
He sought out solutions.
And he still had to get ragdolled some to top it off.
And as to the other Avatars' advice, and the idea that he was selfish.
He followed the wisdom of all the Avatars he spoke to.
He was decisive: "No, I'm not going to end like this."
Justice brought Peace: the firelord being rendered powerless and stuck to suffer jail the rest of his life weak and helpless is justice
He actively shaped his own Destiny: he decided how he was going to end things and shaped his destiny and the destiny of the whole world
"Selfless duty calles you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to protect the world": to which Aang says "I guess I don't have a choice Momo, I have to kill the firelord."
The Lion Turtle did not come out of left field and Aang earned/deserved his ending.

I think a certain amount of repeated trauma can pull you so far away from your humanity that everything becomes.... dark. it feels like the world is some kind of purgatory, just a place where you wait for whoever or whatever is in charge to decide what to do with you. It feels like limbo. It feels like spirithood. a few weeks ago I was walking down the street and a man was walking in the opposite direction as me on the same sidewalk. he was looking straight ahead, I assumed he saw me, because why wouldn't he, right? It wasn't until I was about 2 feet away from him that he jumped, looked like he'd seen a ghost. like it scared the shit out of him as if I just materialized in front of him. maybe he was just lost in thought, or maybe I'm not really here. it's been a pattern throughout my life where people frequently don't realize I'm there until I make a sound or they look at me, and it spooks them when they finally see me. You make yourself so quiet, so small, so invisible in the face of trauma that you begin to become something half-there, and rather than living in the world, you haunt it.
