“A Fylgja, Flygjie or Fylgjur in Plural, is a spirit who accompanies a person as a reflection of their character or to show their future fate. The word fylgja means "to accompany" / “Companion / fylgja = to follow”. It can also mean "afterbirth of a child" for  the afterbirth and the fylgja are connected. In some instances, the fylgja can take on the form of the animal that shows itself when a child is born or after the birth a fylgja appears as a animal and eats the afterbirth. In some literature and sagas, the fylgjur can take the form of mouse, dogs, foxes, cats, or birds because those were animals that would  eat the afterbirths. If you see your own fylgie it is a death omen but other people who are close to you might be lucky enough to see your fylgie while you are asleep (and people gifted in magic might even see it while you’re awake) which of course means you’re unlikely to know what your fylgie is unless someone else sees it. In Christian stories are often animals mentioned who are the persons soul and leave to run around when the persons sleeps, only to hasty crawl back in the persons mouth when they wake up from the sleep. The sleeper will remember out of the animals perspective how they had wandered around. Those animals are a christian version of the Fylgja.”
