one aspect about them i love

she's a sweetie and a good soul but she can be a bitch when she wants to. the true duality of Sofia Mantega. and i love her so much for it. what's an academy x kid without a little bitchiness? a little rude attitude?

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

honestly this is a hard question to answer because she's such a minor character that hasn't gotten significant attention in like 15 years that like I hardly see people talk about her and whenever I do they're all right. But I guess one thing is that I wish artists remembered that she's brown :/ the only time she was really drawn w dark skin was in the New Mutants book where she was introduced and she's just been getting lighter since then, even to the point where her hair has somehow become red?

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character

I think her powers manifested a bit earlier than most mutants, they came in puberty, probably when she was having some sort of emotional outburst in an argument with her mother– a meaningless argument, of course, something ridiculous and completely lighthearted, just a typical twelve year old having a bit of a tussle with her mom. But her mom immediately accepted her for her mutation, and taught her that it was beautiful, just like her. Her family and community in Venezuela all accepted her as well, she was free to use it whenever she wanted, they all loved her for it. Her mom taught her that she had a unique connection with nature, and never to look down on it. Naturally, the loss of her mother and that community, and meeting her cold and callous father, who refused to acknowledge her mutation, would have been so traumatizing for her. Of course she acted out the way she did, destroying his store like that. She was taught never to be ashamed of her mutation, so why not use it to get the attention of her father? This just makes her whole story hit a lot harder, especially when she loses her powers after M-Day.

one character i love seeing them interact with

Julian, obviously. Never thought I could feel so strongly about a het ship, but they are naturally perfect for each other. I want them to get married on Krakoa! I hate Leah Williams but one thing she did very well in was bringing them back, Julian calling her "beautiful" like he did back in the day, and holding her hand as she was resurrected, that was remarkable.

one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more

I feel like she and Xuân would get along really well. Something about their personalities just makes me think they'd connect.

ALSO Akihiro, idk why but I feel like they'd make a good pair. Maybe it's the pheremone powers/wind powers combination that's appealing, though I'd hope their friendship would be less toxic that Sofia and Laurie's.

I think that if Laurie were to go truly evil, Sofia would be the one to stop her. The powers are obviously right for the situation, but I'm also just thinking of Sofia reminding her what she was like when they first met, how she once hated using her powers so much because she feared becoming evil, just like she is now. Sofia would be able to bring her down yes, but also help her realize that she doesn't want this.

In Riko's most recent appearance, which was several years ago now, she and fellow We Are Robin alum Dax were revealed to have become supervillains, motivated by Duke having abandoned them for the BatFamily. This was also when she got the blue hair. It was awful.

Also, I THINK the implication with Lian is that she's been putting on an act the last couple years, and only from the panel with the hug onward are we seeing what she's actually like as a preteen (Also, not that I like it, but for what its worth, an Asian writer gave her the blue hair. )

ah that’s a shame about riko and dax, i’m really enjoying seeing them as i’m reading robin war rn. but nice to know at least lian had a point to her “villainy” (and an asian writer!)

NEW X-MEN TV SHOW

SO ONE THING ABOUT ME IS THAT I WANT TO BECOME A SCREENWRITER. I REALLY WANT TO PRESENT MY IDEAS AND I ESPECIALLY WANT TO GIVE THE NXM THE LIVE ACTION TV SHOW THEY DESERVE. I WAS INSPIRED BY A FRIEND OF MINE, @spiralcass, WHO CREATED AN AMAZING NEW X-MEN ANIMATED SERIES, TO SHOW MY IDEAS FOR MY OWN NEW X-MEN SHOW THAT I HOPE TO PUT ON SOMEDAY. I’M NOT SURE HOW MANY SEASONS OR EPISODES THERE WILL BE, BUT I DO HAVE SOME PRETTY GOOD IDEAS. SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I WILL INTRODUCE THE MAIN AND SECONDARY CAST FOR SEASON 1.

MAIN CAST: JULIAN KELLER, CESSILY KINCAID, SOFIA MANTEGA, CLARICE FERGUSON, LAURA KINNEY, SANTO VACCARRO, AND JAY GUTHRIE.

Regarding your post about Cass and Laura, I'm currently really interested in reading about Laura, how would I go about that?

I'm more of a casual fan of Laura so I'm not nearly as read up on her as I am with Cass but X-23 vol 3 (2010-2012) was good stuff. Although it is, as you might expect, pretty fucked up at times if that bothers you. @spiralcass could give you way better reading advice for all things X-Men and Laura Kinney than me.

More than two years into their marriage, the King and Queen have long stopped being chaste with one another, but conversations about offspring remain awkward in their household. The Queen knows that Doctrine describes continuing the family line as a marital duties, and she knows all their advisors expect them to produce heirs. Sometimes she even wonders what it would like rear an infant; if the literature is correct and she'd instantly be overwhelmed with maternal love she had hitherto never held. However, when she broaches the subject with her husband, all she gets are nervous fidgeting and noncommittal answers. And as her desire for children isn't that strong, she's happy to let the question lie dormant for another few months.

But when her handmaidens and inspectors bring in the latest court gossip, she has to discuss matters with her husband. This times she's blunt in a way he can appreciate.

She asks him if his reluctance to bear an heir is because he has nephews. Or rather, he has sisters-in-law who have plans for his nephews, and fears over what the Queen might do to these same nephews. The king admits his relatives have expressed their fears to him, but he trusts his Queen to be kind to these innocent boys, if only because he considers them family. He doesn't care about who the next king is, so long as they take good care of the kingdom. He believes several of his nephews could, but he also knows that a child raised by his queen would be unstoppable; he's just unsure if he's capable himself of being a father, and doesn't want to put yet another thing all on her

The Queen is both touched and embarrassed. She hugs him and tells him that she's seen him with his nephews, and she knows he would be a wonderful father. The King smiles, but has one last question.

"What if they turn out like me?"

She kisses his forehead. "That would be wonderful. Imagine them, as brilliant and compassionate as their father.."

"...and as brave and impartial as their mother."

They still adopt some of the little rapscallions that come into their danger-fraught lives though, whether out of a debt to their tragically deceased parents, or because they bonded with the child.

I think the funniest dynamic for arranged-marriage royalty would be a queen who came here 100% prepared to murder her future husband and rule as a widow queen in her own right, only to discover that the king is autistic as hell and responds to her wish to rule with "oh thank god please do, I don't want to be bothered by these people. I can just tell them to go bother you instead, if you really want that. I've got beetles I wanted to study."

How do you see Talia and Cass getting along? Personally, I think once Talia got past Cass being the LoA's messiah, they'd bond over being style queens and go shopping together.

I'm really not sure if Talia or cass would get along at all tbh I think they're both just very different characters and they both probably have ideas about how the other is that stops them from connecting with each other

It's a popular idea among me and some friends, and you may have seen it around, but I was wondering what you thought of it: Cassandra Cain and Thad as each other's Bat and Speedster.

the more that i think about this the more appealing it is... idk if they would ever be friends per say but i do really like the idea of these two doing their best to be heroes despite being raised as weapons they've got that nice thematic synergy going on

Hey Rena! Awesome that you're back! I was wondering if you'd read the DCeased books and Harley Quinn & the Birds of Prey, and, if so, what your thoughts on Cass in them was.

I thought they were... okay? I think, as far as Cass content is concerned, Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey satisfied by itch better than DCeased: Unkillables and DCeased: Dead Planet. But I also had my crits of both -- on the Cass level and on the general content levels.

I've kinda debated doing full reviews of both Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey and of DCeased: Unkillables but I think I'd honestly have more to say about the art critiques I have for them than the Cass stuff.

True for how her face looks and how she acts (like... acting in the show. I don’t know how she behaves out of the show for the other meaning of acts)! I don’t reference her face exactly, because I don’t like copying people’s faces (in case an actor is like “Wait is that my face? I’m gonna sue this loser” Lol I know that will never happen but it’s paranoia :P) But I can’t deny that the way I draw her is influenced by that actress.

I do think the absolute perfect casting for babs would be someone who actually uses a wheelchair, though.

One Thad mega fan to another, what would your pitch be if you were offered an Inertia solo book?

//OH MAN   ;   (Retrospective OH MAN cause this got long and ramble-y my bad)

Would you believe I’ve never really thought of a solo book idea for Thad? I kinda like him as support/apart of a side plot. Basically slowly becoming apart of the family through hard work and a clear, but slow shift in his character/ trying to help the Flash Fam despite what they think of him.

Though if Thad did have a solo book I feel like it could center around him possibly needing to time travel in order to fix something/prevent something possibly involving his own family of time traveling speedsters (Eobard, maybe the generations of cobalt blues; there were so many of them)/unwinding whatever plot they have which could also threaten his own existence and maybe Bart’s (idk how, but somehow). Maybe at the end of that Thad comes into contact with the Flash Fam by accident after a mishap with his time traveling, which would be a cliffhanger ending as they recognize him. (Flash Fam still holds some bad blood with Thad so there’s suspicions and hostility toward them which would then lead into the beginning of a new volume/series/whatever), and Thad is sorta unwilling put under their supervision  as the Flash Fam is brought up to speed with what Thad’s been doing (they’ve probably been dealing with an influx of reverse speedsters in the 21st century while Thad’s been time traveling). 

Basically things that I want:

Thad to actually interact with family after coming back a bit more sane, still a bit angry (in general; toward the Allens; toward the Thawnes), and coming to terms he was treated like shit. (But he can’t just go straight to President Thawne because he is technically his “father” and that status must leave some conflicted feelings, strong feelings about how his own father used him, and since he’s his father there’s just some of that lingering power Thawne would have over him as his father figure (albeit a real shitty one).) But I do want this confrontation eventually.

Also I want Thad to question why he wasn’t good enough for his own ‘father’; it’s so shitty I know it’s shitty BUT THE ANGST

OH actually talking to Meloni at some point. I’d also like them to have a bit of complex relationship. Meloni might see him more as Thawne’s son and Thad in turn would see her as an Allen so he’s bitter towards her somewhat cause old behaviors and feelings are hard to change.

I know it’s a favorable opinion that Meloni would treat Thad like another son, but I’ve always been one to view their relationship sorta like siblings with a large age gap between them; also they would definitely shit talk about Thawne because he’s a shitty father and they both know that.

Thad to slowly, and I mean slowly, develop a relationship with the Flash Family through his own actions. They’re not heroic, they definitely start out self motivated, but eventually they shift from this selfish origin. Thad starts to form relationships (AKA Barry (and also Max)), he’s slowly beginning to be treated like he’s family or something close to family 

I’d really like Thad to meet Barry, because I’ve always thought he’s resembled Barry. I’d also like him to be the first of the Flash Fam who really grows to know him. It’s also important cause he’s kinda like the Flash Fam patriarch, but also it would put him sorta in conflict with Iris as the flash fam matriarch and because Thad did kidnap Iris during the Impulse comics and try to hurt Bart back then which she knows of. So Barry and Iris hold differing opinions about Thad. (But I don’t want any sort of big fight over it that would affect their relationship or would think that it alters it somehow it’s just conflicting opinions of Thad).

Barry also seems like he’d be the most impartial of the Flash Fam when it came to dealing with Thad.

I also want Thad and Bart to slowly develop a brotherly relationship; Depending on Bart’s background this could go a few ways.

I want them to be out of uniform and someone is so surprised Bart has a twin or something like that.

Thad’s lie would be that he was living with the maternal side of their family so that’s why no one has ever met him.

…I’m realizing things could get paradoxical if this Thad is the one who killed Bart because would Bart be willing to trust or even talk to Thad if he remembers he killed him.

Also F:FMA was not good characterization of Bart; we don’t need that to be canon in an ideal world.

Do you think Emma could be trans?

I wouldn't say that the text directly indicates or supports it, but I think it is a valid and super interesting reading of the character. Retroactively giving an established character a trans background-- that is to say, stating that the character as we know them is, for lack of a better term, "post" transition-- can be really tricky, but I think with Emma, you could make it work.

Emma has a lot elements that resonate with the lived experiences and material realities of many trans women, and reading her through that lens is especially profound when you think of her coming up in the 70s and 80s, and being a mentor--or even an icon-- to young girls like Shela.
