From the line he gives us, it seems Tara did the thinking in the way of using magic items. So the idea that Mr. Hermit never considered asking this of a person didn't feel like much of a stretch 🤣

Okay but joking aside, this idea occurred to me and I just. Needed to exorcise it out of my brain. I knew it wouldn't leave me alone until it existed outside of me lol

As tragic as Mystra's charge is, as far as I can tell Gale seems to avoid reciprocating Tav's advances until he's given it since.... y'know, he might not be around much longer;;;

The way Gale shakes in camp absolutely wrecks me. And I wanted so bad to help him more between when the last item stopped working and when he gets the charge. To do something for him, even if it was a temporary comfort (maybe lose a spell slot or two that day from the cost of something like this?). Larian has already done so, so much in the way of camp interactions like the ones with Astarion (the mirror, the scars, etc) and I am so thoroughly grateful and impressed with what we already get but aeugh, I WANT it haha

Ya know, something I love about fight scenes in The Owl House is how physical they are. Like yeah, everyone is a witch and uses magic and whatnot, but that doesn't stop them from throwing punches and kicks and breaking someone's nose.

Like, look at the fight between Eda and Lilith in Agony of a Witch. For every second these two are flinging spells around, they spend just as much time throwing flying kicks and trying to beat each other over the head with their staves! It's brutal and awesome and I love it!

Because yeah, if you can fling yourself at lightning-fast speeds, why wouldn't you use that power to rush your opponent and slam them into a wall?

The fact that everyone is willing to get physical makes these scenes sooooooo much cooler! Like, the fights don't just boil down to two people standing on opposite ends of the room spinning their hands around. They fly around the arena, tossing fireballs, throwing punches, charging themself with magic and roundhouse kicking a fool! It's great!

And it's a consistent thing through the entire show. The entire fight between Amity and Hunter in Eclipse Lake is just the two of them trying to beat the crap out of each other. Hunter is teleporting around trying to catch Amity off guard and knock her over the head with his staff, and Amity just blocks with her abomination sludge until she has the chance to make a spiked fist and just decks him in the face!

I freaking LIVE for these kinds of fight scenes, where magic is used to enhance the choreography instead of replacing it. The fights in this show are so freaking good because everyone is just as willing to break someone's arm as they are to burn them alive, and I love it.

🪄 Effects of using magic

Fantasy whump ideas no. 1

(I may or may not have been partially inspired by various D&D classes in making this...)

Exhaustion. Using magic is incredibly tiring. Even as their body is still flooded with adrenaline from fighting for their life, Whumpee is exhausted and collapses at the first chance they get. If they're traveling with others, do they try to wake Whumpee up, or let them sleep? Maybe a party member wraps a blanket around them, praying they wake up soon. Or maybe they wake up on the ground hours later, forgotten.

Loss of memory, personality, or even their own sanity. As Whumpee uses more and more of their power, they begin to lose themself. They forget their closest friends, breaking Caretaker's heart when they learn that Whumpee doesn't remember them. Eventually they can't even remember their own name, or why they turned to magic in the first place. They no longer know who or what they're fighting for. And this makes them miserable, knowing that they chose to give themselves up to magic, but not knowing the reason why.

Injury (TW for brief mentions of blood, bruises, and broken bones). Magic takes a toll on the body, and Whumpee has to consider how much they're willing to give. They feel sick, like their organs are melting into slush. Maybe bruises appear across their skin, or blood leaks from their eyes, their mouth, their fingertips, staining their arcane focus red. With stronger magic, Whumpee feels their bones begin to crack. The rest of the party begs them to stop doing this to themself, as Caretaker gently bandages their latest wounds. Or maybe their party doesn't care, using Whumpee as a weapon that can simply be tossed aside when it breaks.

Evil warlock pact. This can work with any of the above, but basically, there is some other entity granting Whumpee their power at a cost. Maybe what it gives in magic, it takes in life force. It could be a malevolent deity that has its own motives for granting Whumpee power, and maybe it's not being completely honest as to what those motives are.

Reputation/social standing. For whatever reason, magic is extremely taboo. Nobody understands why Whumpee uses it, assuming that they're dangerous, monstrous, and greedy for power. Maybe Whumpee didn't even choose to be magical, they just naturally are. Yet, they hate themselves for it, wanting nothing more but to wash the magic from their veins. There's no safe place for them. They're always on the run, pushing away those who care about them for fear of being found out.

My perfect winter Solstice 🥰

Beneath the winter's silver shroud,

A solstice tale is sung aloud.

The sun retreats, its warmth withdrawn,

As frosty breath adorns the dawn.

The world in slumber, ice-kissed and still,

A whispered breeze on windowsill.

Branches, like fingers, reach for the sky,

Nature's artwork in frozen sigh.

Crystal blankets weave a quilted scene,

I was just thinking again about how much I love the idea of D&D Elizabeth/Darcy as a sorcerer/wizard spellcasting duo.

I particularly like storm sorcerer Elizabeth/abjuration wizard Darcy, with Elizabeth as an offensive powerhouse and Darcy a defensive one, and both kind of judgy about each other, yet sorcerers are famously (in fact definitionally!) versatile and a skilled wizard is scary at the best of times.

(Elizabeth is always ready to use Silvery Barbs and Hold Person against Jane's foes and Darcy carefully prepares Lightning Bolt every morning.)
