My critique of CW’S The Flash

The Flash is one of my absolute favourite shows, and I think it deserves one of these. Yes my favourite shows deserve critiques because there are changes I would’ve liked to see instead. This is all just my opinion on the show, not exactly hating it. Plus.. I saw someone else doing something similar to here goes.

Imma be clear at the start. I don’t hate WestAllen, just really really disappointed with how they were written in the latter seasons sometimes.

Props to every actor in the Flash who put all their effort into the show whether the script was cringe or not.

Season 1-2 was FIRE. No complaints. Loved the WestAllen.

Season 3 was good,

but I think they could’ve done Savitar better. Still liked him as the big bad being depressed/emo!Barry. I’ll say that I got really attached to Harry in S2 which made me wonder why they have HR there at all? The dude grew on me, and he added humour to the team, but honestly between him and Harry, it could’ve easily been Harry. Though it means he would die at the end.. so I’m glad Season 3 had HR Wells instead sorry not sorry.

The relationship between Julian Albert and Barry was so fun to watch. Which reminds me, LOVED Eobard’s appearance as Matt Letscher in 3x01. I have no idea why they continue to use Wells’ face like bruh. Your pretending as Wells is over so like why. GIMME MORE MATT!EOBARD.

I loved Frost???

Season 4 was also great.

I’d say more quality than season 3 because it was their first time against a big bad that WASN’T a speedster yet posed a more than adequate challenge to the team. The plot was nice and unique (I really loved Hazard!). I’ll say that DEVOE was kinda showing some red flags before becoming the Thinker in his relationship with Marlize, like he seemed kinda overly possessive of her. Glad that she switched to helping Team Flash after seeing what her husband had become. Loved her “Thinker’s first victim” line.

I felt like they started focusing on Cecile too much? Her role was vital to the plot at the end with helping Barry hop into Devoe’s mind to retrieve Ralph. And speaking of Ralph, I was neutral towards the character at first, but he grew on me. Also why fire him for sometning he did like 10yrs ago. That made no sense. I’d rather Ralph than more Cecile or Allegra.

LOVED ALL THE BANTER BETWEEN HARRY AND CISCO. And FROST FROST FROST!!! I liked her S4 outfit. I also think Barry’s supersuit was the best in this season.

One of my favourite episodes was “Flashtime”. Awesome awesome filler episode.

Season 5 was also great.

Barry’s supersuit was trash tho imo. He just looks like a weird deformed strawberry.

Above average but not quite as good as S4. LOVED NORA WORKING WITH THAWNE then Barry finding out and tossing her into the pipeline cell lol. Just the betrayal, and then dumping her in the middle of a random street in the future. Loved all the father-daughter moments she had with Barry. Cool to see the writers creativity in “meta-tech”.

However Iris.. bro in 5x19 she has some issues bringing up the fact Barry NEEDED to go into the Speedforce TWICE. And then her telling Barry to his face that she didn’t care that Nora was working with Thawne. Like bro, he murdered your husband’s mother and caused sm problems. And you don’t care about that?? Good to see that Barry called her out in the end.

Imma complain about freaking Sherloque again. Why not Harry? Even after what happened to him in S4, I think he could’ve figured out that Nora is secretly working with Thawne. Like dude’s still smart af.

Nora getting erased from existence at the very end.. sad :( I miss S5 Nora

Season 6.

I feel like this is when everything started going downhill. I didn’t care for Mirror Monarch. The mirror!Iris storyline was interesting to see. Idk what happened the rest of the season. That’s how much I didn’t care for this season lol. I think the other half was about Ramsey and how he wanted to make everyone zombies. Man I HATED Sue Dearborn or however you spell her name. She just took up too much screentime. This is when it started feeling like “Iris & Friends” instead of “The Flash”.

Liked to see how Barry dealt with slowly losing his speed bc he was killing the speedforce lol. Liked how the Caitlin/Frost duo became separate people. It was cool. At least we got that lol.

I think this is when Allegra comes in. I honestly can’t stand her. Like the whole her and her sister trope? Why.

The one thing I did like was Barry’s artificial speedforce gave him speed thinking. Awesome episode to watch. EXCEPT NASH. WHY. His sacrifice is useless in the end because of the whole “Iris is Barry’s lightning rod” thing. Have nothing about a speedster’s lightning rods in the comics, just didn’t like how that was written into the show. It eventually got really annoying.

Season 7.

Where do I even begin. This is when Barry’s “children” became a thing, and then suddenly speedforce!Nora wanting to kill all of them? Like what??? Where did that come from? Dion’s storyline was interesting. The rest were just.. Meh. And the CGI was so cringe.

I loved Abra Kadabra??? Why they gotta kill him off in one episode.

Does Chillblaine start coming in this season? I dislike him in general.

Season 8.

THIS IS WHEN BARRY’S ACTUAL CHILDREN COME BACK.

Now with Nora getting erased in S5, I really would’ve preferred if they gave us Tornado Twins instead. Like you can even use the same actors, but I honestly don’t really like the new Nora. I did like seeing her interaction between her and her family.

Also. Bart. I. Have. Major. Problems. I LOVE Bart but he is supposed to be Barry’s GRANDSON. Give us Don Allen instead. I did like the episode where they messed up the timeline, went back to 2013 and then accidentally reset Jay into the timeline. Also loved the episode with the whole Barry and the gamma radiation making him age hella fast. Bro was basically a zombie at the end and still overloaded the machine with the speedforce.

The. Stupid. Power Rangers godspeed arc was shit and them being Bart’s Thawne-like arch nemesis. Like boy, don’t compare Thawne with your godspeed problems. Don’t even start. Also what is with the “Negative Forces” and “Positive Forces” Power Rangers thing and then Iris’ time sickness? At this point, The Flash just started to feel like a soap opera.

I liked Chester even though he was a “replacement” for Cisco. He was unique. But the whole Allegra/Chester budding relationship where did that come from?? It just seemed very cringe and didn’t do much for the plot besides drama I guess. Khione was meh. Like just give us Caitlin with Frost in some way. I don’t care about Khione and her arc. Pls give us more Barry and not so much Cecile and Allegra.

Season 9

The show should just be renamed “Power Rangers: Iris & Friends” at this point. They made an entire episode without Barry?? Like if I pick up a Flash comic book, I expect it to be about THE FLASH. Not his random friends. Like yes, his friends can make appearances but don’t give me a whole dang episode without Barry THE MAIN CHARACTER. Also how the hell did Cecile become that OP, where is the character development.

Idk where Chillblaine comes in but I just don’t like him, not to mention that I don’t like the relationship between him and Frost. Like what.

Eddie’s Cobalt Blue arc and Red Death arc could’ve been done WAY better. I didn’t see any plot relevance in any way. It was written so poorly. Red Death was just like evil speedster!Batman or something. Please don’t bring our beloved Eddie back if you gonna write him all just jealous of Barry and him somehow becoming the new avatar of the Negative Speedforce. And what does Batwoman have anything to do with this (I believe she appears in the finale villains arc)l

There is legit only one episode I like in S9. The one that comes “full circle”. The one where Barry gets stuck in 2000, gets to chill with his parents for one day, and then comes full circle with Matt!Eobard killing Nora. SEASON 1 QUALITY. They even use the same bg music which awwww. And the “If I can spend one more day with my parents, then what would I say to them?” Line? Chef’s kiss.

Did not like the finale. His final run speech was okay about sharing his gift. Definitely would’ve preferred if Barry became the lightning bolt that struck him in S1 like in the comics.

Idk which episodes: Loved all the Amunet & Frost storyline, and then Goldface time to time appearances. Especially “Officer Chemist” lol.

Who do you think are the most OP members of the FlashFam? I think it's difficult, the majority of them has almost the same powers.

Oh easy.

Wally, Bart and Barry.

I think we forget sometimes that the vast majority of the crazy feats of godlike powers we see from speedsters are coming from these three. Wally, Bart and Barry have insane connections to the speedforce and their skill level is unmatched. What these three can do is by no means normal or average. They are op as fuck.

You have to remember that even... let's say Max Mercury is nowhere even remotely near their skill level. And we're talking about Max Mercury. The guy who knows more about the speedforce than anyone else and trained for years to master it. But Max (although he was faster than Bart when Bart was a child) isn't on the same playing field as Wally, Bart and Barry. Max couldn't enter the speedforce without Bart's assistance, Max couldn't leave the speedforce without Barry and Wally's assistance, Max can't time travel to a destination of his own choice, Max can't speed steal or fully pause time, ect ect. Max is one of the most skilled, most knowledgeable, most trained and most respected speedsters of all time. Max is the cream of the crop. You won't find another speedster better than Max. He's a shining example of what's humanely possible for speedsters to achieve.

But Wally, Bart and Barry aren't humanely possible. Those three are insane.

We're just really used to op speedsters because we're used to whatever the fuck Wally, Bart and Barry have going on. But they are very much not representative of speedsters as a whole.

Do you guys remember how fast Wally used to be? When he was younger and struggling with his speed and stuff? THAT'S THE GODDAMN AVERAGE. Wally AT HIS SLOWEST was still faster than every single goddamn speedster he came across, including Jay, Johnny, Jesse, the Blue Trinity, the Red Trinity, ect. HE JUST WASN'T FASTER THAN BARRY OR EOBARD SO HE THOUGHT HE WAS THE WORST. Because Wally is fucking insane. He's an insane human being. Anyway, Wally at his slowest is the typical representation of an average speedster. That's how they typically are.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate just how much Barry knows about his powers. Like, it's crucial for someone with the type of power levels he has to understand, not abuse, and have control of his powers, and I feel like that's not given enough attention.

Take this, for example, when Wally loses control of his powers in Heroes-in-Crisis. He was so overcome by the grief of loosing his kids, his family, of feeling alone, that he just couldn’t hold on any longer and in a moment of weakness he let go of the control he had on the speedforce, resulting in him accidently killing Arsenal, Blue Jay, Commander Steel, Hot Spot, Lagoon Boy, Gunfire, Red Devil, Gnarrk, Nemesis, Protector, Solstice, Tattooed Man, and Poison Ivy. All of them not only were heroes who (for some) were once Wally's teammates, but they were his friends.

He just couldn't keep control of the power he was gifted, and it resulted in him killing those he loved. And that's something that needs to be acknowledged and understood.

And this isn't some newbie speedster whos just learning the ropes of their powers. Wally even says it himself, he's been doing this since he was a 𝘬𝘪𝘥, and he still lost control.

I feel like most people don't understand that being a speedster isn't just about being fast or being the lovable goofball who's smart but stupid at the same time, but about being in control and being accepting.

I get people who read the comics mostly do or have a vague understanding, but those who just know of the flash through the movies or shows or just from general knowledge just don't seem to understand how crucial it is for speedsters to know how to use their powers.

Like when Barry made Flashpoint to save his parents. He abused his power, and it resulted in everything he loved crumbling around him and never being exactly the same.

A phrase I really like from The Flash Cw show that explains this is, "See this coffee cup right here? Think of it as the space-time-continuum. Whenever you go back in time, it breaks. Now... you can reset the timeline, you can try to fix it, but no matter how hard you try... it's never gonna be exactly how it was. " when Jay explained to Barry why he couldn't just change the timeline for his personal benefit.

Speedsters aren't gods, their people, who, for whatever reason, were given extraordinary abilities. Abilities that at times do seem to rival that of the gods. And some speedsters realize that and decide to take advantage.

A prime example is Eobard Thawne when he was unable to let go of his vendetta, and decided to destroy Barry's life by changing the past and the future. Aka, killing Barry's mom, Nora. 

This led to Barry's father, Henry, to be falsely accused and sentenced for the crime, leaving Barry without his parents.

There are plenty of other times where Eobard used his powers to change the timeline like Barry did, and make himself the hero and Barry be the villain, or even times where he made the world think 𝘩𝘦 was Barry, and so on. The same can be said for the other speedster rogues like God Speed and Zoom and so on that abuse the speedforce for their own personal gain, and that's a prime testament to how important it is for speedsters to not abuse their powers.

I mean, they can literally rewrite history.

Not to mention, Barry literally outran death itself. Like, wtf. Thats not something you just 𝘥𝘰.

Speedster's are even wanted by God's, which says a lot.

So, yeah. Let's just appreciate how much Barry knows about his powers and how he decides not to just erase whatever tf he wants about the timeline.

Harry Wells (Flash) - Earth 2 - Chapter 17

Harry has never been happier.

When he planned to come back to Star Labs, it was to grab his things and leave.

That’s why he expects the solemn expression of his friends when he breaks the corner.

Cisco is holding his duffle bag.

“I packed your screwdriver, figured you’d still need it to drive the scientist on Earth 2 crazy. “ Cisco comments.

Harry smiles, and when they see another person walk from behind him, there’s confusion.

Then recognition.

Next is disbelief.

Because you aren’t looking at them like what they expect.

Your smile is as bright as Harry’s.

“Hey guys.”

Barry stumbles for a second and all you do is blink. He’s hugging you so frantically and you almost trip. You laugh, because he’s holding on so tightly.

“I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere. I promise.”

Explaining your situation is a little harder. There’s still so much you don’t truly know yourself.

But you trust Nora. She’s looked out for Barry and the others countless times.

Overall, you’re just happy to be able to look at your friends again.

“The period that my memories started vanishing is foggy, but I remember all of you. I remember what happened with Thawne and Harry coming here. Even me acting all brooding when we first met. I remember all of it.”

Barry nods.

“Nora is someone we can trust. We’ve been through a lot. I’m just so glad that you..that we get to be here together. It feels like it’s been so long.”

You understand that.

“Do you feel different, any headaches or pains?” Caitlin asks.

“Nope, I feel great. It’s strange. I still remember what happened with Thawne but everything is different.”

“You went through an ordeal. I think it’s normal.” Harry inputs.

You understand his need to reassure.

“From here on out, I think things will be okay.”

You look so effortlessly happy. Just from your expression he’d like to believe in just about anything.

For the remainder of the day, the atmosphere is fairly light. When it’s time for you to go home, Harry insists on dropping you off. He’s been pretty much a golden retriever since you came back and it’s honestly really sweet. In the comfort of your home, you feel at ease.

Harry appears to be the same.

“I should start getting back those memories soon. Nora, the speedforce, she promised me that it would all be okay. My body just needed to be cleansed in a sense. In a lot of ways, severing the negative speed force might have been my saving grace.”

You turn to Harry, because you can tell that until this point, he’s taken the blame. The guilt of knowing he’d done that to someone he cared about could not have been easy.

“You saved me, Harry. I need you to know that.”

In the event that this is all a dream constructed by his mind to deal with the guilt, his only request is that he never wakes up.

“So, now that the serious stuff is out of the way, is there anything you wanna tell me before my memories return. Any embarrassing situations that occurred that I don't recall?” You wear a playful smile.

“I finally watched one of those horrible rom coms.”

“WHAT! Are you kidding me!! You monster! Now we have to watch one!”

“Not in this lifetime.”

“Harry, come on!”

He was willing to do a lot of things, but he promised himself he would never go through that again.

i've also been brainstorming a potential rant post/essay-type analysis just entirely based on an autistic interpretation of barry allen. so far some of my points include:

the coma/barry's other absences between seasons, disappearances into the speedforce, etc., as metaphorical representations of autistic burnout

the literal and non-literal aspects of masking in the superhero context, paired with a) barry's desire to unmask constantly and reveal his true self to those around him vs. the need to continue masking his identity for his own protection

pair that with barry repeatedly being surprised when other people aren't taken in by the mask and already know his secret when he thinks he's doing a great job of hiding his (autistic) identity from those around him... i don't speak from experience or anything

The episode ran into production problems when Grant Gustin (The Flash/Barry Allen) was diagnosed with Covid. The finale saw the Flash having to try to save his timeline as he was up against the Negative Speed Force represented by Cobalt Blue (Rick Cosnett), Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh), Zoom (Teddy Sears), Savitar (Tobin Bell), and Godspeed (Karan Oberoi). Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicoket) took on the moniker Virtue and a new costume. Nora was born after the world was saved. Barry Allen decided to share the speedforce with Avery Ho (PiperCurda) , Max Mercury (Trevor Carroll), and Jess Chambers (Hana Destiny Higgins). ("A New World Part 4", The Flash, TV Event)

The timeline’s in danger , he thinks frantically, the timeline’s in danger – Eobard Thawne is attempting to break time and he’s using Nora West-Allen to do so. Help me get there so I can prevent that. Help me get there in a way that won’t do more damage. The silence stretches on for an eternity as he runs. The silence lasts barely a second as he runs. Then a voice, familiar and yet not, answers. The timeline is on the brink and the multiverse is under threat. Trust your instincts, Theodore Edward Thawne, child of the Speed Force – focus on Nora West-Allen… and run. When , he wonders, when? You know when. And somehow he does and he runs and he runs and he runs and—

I knew almost from the start that one of the trickiest parts of to live with (the echoes of the past) would be writing the Speed Force itself, particularly from the point of view of another character. This is an multi-dimensional force of nature with blue and orange morality and Theodore is having to try and connect with it to run back in time, and I wasn't confident in trying to get across his experiences - after all, it's not like this is a problem in real life.

Then I was wondering whether it would show up as someone or not, or at least be the voice of someone, but I couldn't figure out who - Eddie wouldn't make any sense because (as of yet) he hasn't met the man, and yet there weren't exactly many other candidates, and I wasn't sure how Theodore would talk to the Speed Force...

But then I remembered that speedsters are seen as children of the SF so they're going to have an easier time in doing so - the exact details I've left vague, but it gets the point across, especially with the SF willing to help him. The voice is familiar to him and yet he can't place it, and I was able to show how weird time is within the SF by having it feel like ages and yet not very long between Theodore's pleading and the SF's answer, and then his instincts, boosted by the SF, lead him to where he wants to go...

I'll probably not do that many time-travel scenes like this, but I'll also never say never, and of course the more I write the better and more confident I'll get - and the SF will manifest itself to Theodore at some point. I think this is a pretty good introduction.

Fake ask game: 🐝 To Hold me like Water (Or Christ, hold me like a knife)

Eobard has done it : he’s killed Nora Allen, solidifying himself as an essential part of the Flash mythos and entangling his and Barry’s lives forever. Except running there and back in time has unexpected consequences: he accidently hits his younger self with a bolt of lightning. It puts all his hard work and the very existence of the Reverse Flash in danger, so of course, he will do what needs to be done to correct it, even if it means discarding a version of himself.  

In the 25th century, a fifteen-year-old Eobard Thawne gets struck by lightning and gains super speed, just like his favorite superhero, The Flash. Desperate to get away from his family, he uses it to go take a peak at the past, curious to know what The Flash was doing when he was his age. He finds Barry Allen, and it’s everything he wants it to be: Barry can talk science and weird phenomena for hours, is also in need of a friend and actually likes spending time with him. They quickly bond, and Eo discovers the pains and delights of having a crush. Except, weird accidents keep happening around his new best friend and eventually, Eo recognises the tell-tale signs of another speedster in the area. He decides he won’t let it stand.

Where adult Eobard Thawne meets his greatest rival yet: his own teenager self, and the speedforce is about to find out how many paradoxes it can handle.

(This one would be more comic based because of the dive into Eobard’s childhood, but probably with some DCTV Flash elements thrown in. Thank you for the ask!)

I like how WestAllen ended in the Flash with Nora's birth. The part where they're holding hands right before her birth and yellow and purple lightning zaps between them is done really well... Now, I don't particularly ship SnowBarry, but I do find the idea cute sometimes because of the Frost sisters, and how well done the writers wrote her scripts. I'm gonna disregard the whole Khione thing in my comparison of both ships which is canon WestAllen and AU SnowBarry from my perspective.

In a SnowBarry AU, Caitlin would be Barry’s “lightning rod”.

Barry would've been married to OG Caitlin (if you know what I mean) by the time they split in S6. At least following the timeline of how WestAllen generally progressed throughout the show. Like, as in, Barry's proposal of "Running Home to You" would be directed towards Caitlin instead of Iris in S3, SnowBarry marriage in S4, etc etc... Maybe it would be Caitlin SnowAllen if they decide to hyphenate?

Anyways, AU SnowBarry or canon WestAllen, I do wish they gave Caitlin/Frost more screentime especially after they split in S6. I would take the Frost sisters in a heartbeat instead of Cecile or Allegra.

S2 Barry and Jay would be “fighting” over Caitlin lol. Or maybe not. But he would be hella protective when Zoom kidnaps her.

In S3, Caitlin turned Killer Frost does end up working with Savitar.. imagine just how desperate Barry would be to keep her from going all "Frosty" because Caitlin is his fiancee, just as desperate as he was with trying to save Iris from Savitar in canon. I think instead of the focus on Iris, a majority of SnowBarry AU’s base plot line would include Barry trying to save Caitlin from her evil self? Like in that one episode where he spoke to Frost, and allowed her to try to kill him because he knows she’s still Caitlin deep down. OR it could be both: Savitar’s tryna kill her because she’s Barry’s “lightning rod” in this SnowBarry AU instead of them joining up.

Let’s say Barry still goes into the Speedforce in this SnowBary AU. Her heartbreak would be another catalyst/reason as to why Caitlin turned into her Frosty self between S3 and S4 to work for Amunet. In canon 4x01, Killer Frost does come back to the team as Caitlin to help Barry come out of the Speedforce so don't gotta "AU" that part. I know they "balanced out" the whole Caitlin/Frost thing in S4, and that was awesome to watch.

Loved the cuteness where “Caity” and Frost would communicate with each other in little sticky notes. Since Barry and Caitlin would be married by that time, maybe Frost writes sticky notes to Barry too?

Moving onto S5.. How would it go with Caitlin raising Nora alone in the future? Caitlin is a geneticist/doctor whereas Iris is a news reporter.. I think with Caitlin’s doctor/biochemist, I don't think she'd put a power dampening chip inside Nora. Nora would have Frost (split or not) to protect/guide her as well as the rest of the team. Maybe in SnowBarry S5, Nora would've grown up knowing that her father is the Flash from the start. 5x18 would've shown Caitlin and Nora having a better mother-daughter relationship than 5x18 canon Iris and Nora. Would she still go to Thawne then? Maybe so because of godspeed and he’s the only other speedster around and then after what happened to Lia? Maybe so.

Since Nora still wouldn’t have ever met Barry, Thawne could’ve still manipulated her with the whole Cicada dagger thing so she travels back in time. One thing for sure: she wouldn’t be all pissy towards Iris lol. But my poor girl Nora would’ve still vanished in S5 finale :(

When Caitlin splits in S6, imagine how happy Frost would be have her own body, but also to be there to support SnowBarry marriage in person, and be able to interact with both Barry and Caitlin at the same time. Speaking of the Frost sisters, what would Nora call Frost? Aunt Frost? Something like that?

Yep, Caitlin and Frost never dies in this particular SnowBarry AU. It was the only stupid thing the writers did for her character.

“Surprised you didn’t call me a witch.”

The other woman—Nora—scoffed. “Please, that’s an amateur mistake. Not all witches are seers, not all seers are witches.”

Reyna hummed, tilting her head. “Well said. What does that make you, then? Born with your powers, or cursed?”

“Never mind that.” Nora took a deep breath. “How good are you at seeing the past?”

Reyna arched an eyebrow. “That’s a bold question to ask a Seer.”

Nora shrugged with a grin that was most definitely not cute. “What can I say, it’s part of my charm.”

Reyna snorted. “Debatable. But…yes, I can. I was trained by Cynthia Reynolds. Heard of her?”

Nora paled. “The Collectors?”

“Formerly.” Reyna snorted. “Allegedly. But regardless, she insisted on training me properly…and at Papá’s request, she did so without ever telling the Collectors who I am. I was a kid then…I’m an adult now, and I’ve been running this business for years. You do the math.”

“Good.” Nora slammed a paper down on the table. “Because I require your services…and whatever you want, I can pay it.”

Reyna looked at the person on the paper and froze. Looked at Nora, then back again.

And suddenly, a lot of things made sense.

“There’s no need for that,” she said. “Family matters are always pro bono in my book.”
