Ravenna Chastain had expected her life to become more normal after leaving her job as a criminal profiler with the FBPI, becoming a matchmaker instead. She's successful at her job until her latest client, engineer Ethan Sweetwater. Ethan has been on nine of his contracted ten dates, all of which were unsuccessful. She's willing to give him a refund if he'll end the contract. Ethan refuses.

They soon come to an agreement. Ravenna will accompany Ethan to a business reception and evaluate his dating moves. In return, Ethan will go with her to the Chastain Family Reunion. But it appears that danger is still part of Ravenna's life, with murder attempts and a CEO with increasingly erratic powers.

While I enjoyed the story, there were parts that almost seemed like outlines or highlights to be addressed in regards to the mysteries. The chemistry between Ravenna and Ethan was better portrayed, but still could've used more exploration. However the author did a decent job of giving just enough backstory and/or explanation of the threads that she weaves through the books to allow the book to be read as a standalone.

This squeaked to 4 stars, but barely. I'm sorta sad as Harmony is one of my favorites in her various series. Still a decent read and will probably only disappoint some of JAK's hardcore fans.

I think Byler hits so different as a ship because of how damn unlikely the circumstances are and also because the stakes are so high. Like, in what universe do you fall in love with your best friend over the course of ten years? And in what universe can you expect that love to be reciprocated? To feel those feelings and that love about someone you know so deeply must be terrifying, as is the idea of them rejecting you, which would be devastating but also fully expected.

Add onto that the fact that they are both gay in a time where being gay was taboo and just not seen as a genuine option. Mike and Will are hopelessly, desperately in love with each other—with their own best friends—and they both believe that this friendship that is so important to them comes under threat because of the love. Like, both boys probably partially resent themselves for even putting their relationship at risk by daring to have feelings for each other.

It’s so damn unlikely to have a slowburn romance with your best friend over the course of a lifetime. It’s even more unlikely for your best friend to reciprocate your feelings. It is the most unlikely thing of all for your seemingly straight best friend to surprise you by revealing that they are gay too and that they’re in love with you. Like… can you even imagine how intense it will be for Mike and Will to realize all of this in the span of a few seconds? They’re both banking on rejection and that their love is an impossibility. But in one swift kiss or confession, the truth will come out and the weight on both of their shoulders will be lifted.

Also, I simply can’t imagine how intense it would be to know that your best friend who you’ve been in love with as long as you can remember is in love with you back. It’s almost too good, too fantastic to be true even for straight couples and even for people in real life. Like, the reality is that most of us can’t even fathom how intense a love like that would be. It’s truly a once in a lifetime, romance of the century kind of thing. Add onto that the fact that neither Mike nor Will knows that the other is gay let alone reciprocates. The moment they realize will be so intense that I’m all out of words to use to be able to describe it. It will be indescribable.

So, Lucanis Dellamorte is in like his early 30’s? And his parents were Crows, said they died like Crows (on the job), when he and Illario were little and around the time Zevran returned to Antiva to take on the Talons, he would’ve been maybe 10?

What I’m getting at here, is that Zevran did some stuff so heinous to the Crows that he has a standing contract on his head that nobody’s brave/stupid enough to accept (there’s a note about the contract in game for a Crow with sexual prowess and an impossible contract) and what could’ve been that bad? Perhaps, killing the First Talon’s daughters/sons-in-law?

There’s at least some chance it was him, right…?

I'll be honest, my biggest takeaway from the sneak peek wasn't, "Yes Pen, read him for filth!" It was, "Oh Pen is totally shame spiralling out of control." Because yes, Penelope has every right to be upset with Colin and tell him why she is upset, but most of the emphasis in this scene is on just how much Penelope hates herself. She doesn't believe Colin when he compliments her dress (a direct parallel to scenes Pen has had with Marina and Edwina in the past), she calls herself a spinster even though she's only 19 (I'm willing to bet Portia refers to Penelope as a spinster at some point before this scene), she assumes Colin sees her as an embarrassment, and again she points out that even though she managed to change her wardrobe, she is still a laughingstock.

This whole scene does way more to demonstrate Penelope's insecurities than it does to paint Colin as someone who needs to grovel for forgiveness. If anything, Colin is handling the situation maturely. He openly communicates his feelings, he doesn't deny what he said, and it's clear he wants to work through the issue.

Penelope is so unhappy with herself that she's taking it out on him more than she should. It's easier to blame him for the one thing he said rather than force herself to look inward. But I think once Colin comes to her again with his plan to help her find a husband, this is going to shift. Penelope will be put in a position where she will have to reflect on those insecurities and Colin will be the one with her on that journey.

Which brings us back to Nicola talking about Penelope putting Colin on a pedestal. He might be off of that pedestal after what he said last season, but she still doesn't view him as a fully flawed human being yet. Once Penelope forgives Colin at the end of 3x01, it's going to open up her eyes and allow her to see Colin as a full human being and as her equal (not as her idol). This is how we get "You're my mess," and "You're the imperfect man of my heart."
