THE LEGEND OF TINAMNAN GABE
-as recorded in Negros Oriental and Siquijor Island: Legends, Beliefs and Folkways (ed. Caridad Aldecoa-Rodriguez)
I changed Eyo's name because the nature of legends and folktales is that when you retell it, you end up leaving your own fingerprints on it. altho the real reason I changed his name is that I have an idea for a longer story that spans a few centuries that starts with this legend, but I need to do some more research before I really get into it, so for now this is just a standalone comic bc I really like this story :)
#the research is japanese occupation in the central visayas specifically and boy howdy is it a fucking nightmare#and this story is like. reincarnation. sort of. it's folk horror. i want to do a romantic folk horror comic is what im getting at#oh to catch the attention of something Not Like Us during occupation and for that to come back again and again#folklore tag#komiks tag#art tag#anyway those are all photos from around negros oriental/occidental etc etc. tanon strait my beloved

Guilty Gear XX♯Reload Comic Anthology Translation: Try & Error
This is a comic from the Guilty Gear XX Sharp Reload Comic Anthology, which I have been translating. The original scans of this comic are by @tillman and can be found on archive.org
I don’t have anything to link to here either and I didn’t notice any details like last time so uhh…this comic actually made me laugh for the sheer implication that Axl and Bridget are ready and willing to participate in a political assassination attempt. Also that actually, nobody could tell the difference between them, he was kicked out because Ky just wasn’t supposed to be there. Lots of silly implications in this one.
You can read the previous translation here
And the next translation here
Usual disclaimer: I am not fluent in Japanese and all of this is a one Fia job so everything might not be 100% accurate but I always try my best!
#guilty gear#translfiation#told ya the comic was almost done#the full phonetic pangram from the 7th page is#That quick beige fox jumped in the air over each thin dog. Look out I shout for he's foiled you again creating chaos.#The next translation involves a lot of Japanese culture specific terms which will be ‘fun’#The quotation marks in the robot font I use look weird so I used quotation marks from the Splatoon font.#[GG Sharp Reload Translations]#I’m getting my hair cut and dyed at the moment and the hairdresser did not use gloves subsequently making everything blue and purple#especially my new pants#I say this in the tags because I know nobody reads this far into ‘em#axl low#bridget#robo ky

I was reading DunMeshi and was so confused by this phrase that I decided to look it up
(Do correct me if you think this isn’t accurate cuz I just used google)
But I find it frankly hilarious that Chilchuck is using slang from various parts of the British Isles out of nowhere in the last volume??
(I’ve now had someone explain to me that apparently it’s not uncommon for certain uncommon types of informal Japanese to be translated as slang from specific areas, typically around Britain, in English)
First of all I’d alr seen people jokingly headcanoning him as Irish on here (which was an idea I absolutely love)
ALSO I come from a part of the UK where I’m very familiar with the term ‘git’ but had never heard of a version with an e and I also had no idea it meant the same as ‘bastard’
(I have considered that this could just be the regular meaning of the word ‘get’ but I thought it wouldn’t grammatically make sense here so I assumed it was slang esp cuz he would totally call someone a git)
Anyways I’ve checked other translations and it’s not the same so I find it so funny that this one (which I’m pretty sure is the official English translation) included it
(^ another version I found online)
Anyways this is the translation I have and used as an example for this post, which I’m pretty sure is the official English translation:
Edit: Btw also check tags I kinda wrote this when I was drunk on sleep deprivation
#just love the idea of Chilchuck being at least a non-English Brit (or like from somewhere on the isles to include Ireland)#Irish Chilchuck#British chilchuck#ehem#imagine a dub that had him with an Irish accent and Senshi with the Scottish one he’s sometimes given#WE WERE ROBBED /nsrs#alas#most dubs are always just gonna be full of American accent#anyways back to relevant tags#dungeon meshi spoilers#chapter 92#(I wouldn’t consider thsi major spoilers since it has no context but gotta be careful)#dungeon meshi#chilchuck tims#chilchuck#dunmeshi#delicious in dungeon#dunmesh#chilposting#chilchuck posting#shitposting#shitpost#random thoughts#not important#I also thought it might have something to do with the original Japanese#which is why it’s funny that some translations just don’t include it#this is probably a massive reach looking back on it cuz I was really tired when I wrote this 😭#regardless of the specifics#I was just interested by the sudden use of slang/informal language#lesbianslovenamari

hey whats Stars Align
hello. 'Stars Align' is a 2019, 12 episode anime about, among a lot of other things, soft tennis. one of its main characters is yuu asuka, a character who is explicitly non cis.
weirdly, i've been seeing a lot of criticism popping up for copal's handling of the recent mizuki event especially on the topic of their gender. i have also seen both prior to and after the release of the event people not so subtly implying that as a japanese company they have no knowledge about being trans or non-binary or any other sort of non cis identity. or that it would be "more realistic" for ena to have not known about trans people or reacted poorly to the news.
western perspectives of gender and being trans do not apply everywhere, of course, but to suggest that a complete lack of knowledge and a more unknowing/bigoted reaction to such news would be more inherent to and make more sense from a character on account of them being from a non-western culture doesn't exactly sit right with me for a number of reason i'm sure you can figure out.
japanese people are capable of understanding being queer. this should not be a novel concept. and if it is to you, try to think about why.
#anyway. i use the stars align clip because one. i know this show quite well#two. it's a very recent example of this topic being handled#and three. it addresses both being trans and nonbinary within japanese society#i don't know how many of you speak japanese but within the scene specifically masculine pronouns#that are optional and contextual within speech are specifically used to address shou#this is a purposful choice by the character and the writers to emphazise the fact that shou is male without doubt.#and especially given the level of care and love that copal has previously put into mizuki's story#i don't believe that this event ending without the storyline of their secret being fully wrapped up and concluded#is reason enough to doubt and jump ship over their addressing of mizuki's gender.

After Desperado told Hiromu about his eye condition, Hiromu repeatedly said that he wanted Desperado to give him detailed updates on his health situation, and it seems like he meant it. He brought it up immediately on the first day of the current tour and hasn't given up yet.
"The backstage comments are getting stupid again"
Hiromu in the QRT said: "El Desperado, can you hear me? Your eye, your eye surgery, please tell me if it has been completed successfully and safely. ....Yeah, this part of my backstage comment will probably be put onto "X" I think. So please quote it and comment, Desperado-senshu."
Desperado quoted it to say: "You know that if you tell me to do something, I will absolutely never do it."
Undiscouraged, Hiromu continued in the next day's backstage comments:
"First things first. Desperado! Thanks for the comment! But I still want to hear how your eyes are doing, and what % of normal vision you're at right now. Please reassure me! I want to hear the words "I'm 100% healedpiii~!" directly from your mouth, please. I think this part of what I said today will be put onto 'X'"
Desperado didn't respond directly to Hiromu, but he did post an update:
"It hasn't even been a week since my surgery so I'm having terrible double vision, even worse than before the surgery
When I have both eyes open, even if I'm somewhere flat, my balance feels weighted backwards, and the visuals make me nauseous
So I've been wearing an eyepatch everywhere, and traveling by taxi and train instead of driving
But that narrows my field of vision so much that I keep crashing into things and getting in peoples' way...
This suuuucks"
Still not getting the answer he requested, Hiromu escalated.
His wrist tape for today's match read "Despe" "are your eyes" "okay?"
And in his backstage comments, he said that since Desperado isn't talking to him about this on twitter, he wants Desperado to reach out to him directly on the Japanese chat app LINE.
Desperado QRTed a reply, but to the NJPW World account instead of directly to Hiromu.
"My eyes aren't the problem, it's the muscles that move my eyes that are the problem
The muscles that move my eyes are still warming up and getting used to working
I've still got total double vision
I see two people, like the distance between a stand and their stand user"
"So basically, after the muscles that move your eyes are done warming up, you'll intensely train those eyeball-moving muscles so you'll become even stronger than before, okay 🙆 ? "
"I will not do anything to train those muscles after they're done warming up"
"Why did you suddenly start replying to me on X after I said on my backstage comment "Tell me your LINE"?
Ah, whyyy whyyy?"
#njpw#el desperado#hiromu takahashi#takahashi hiromu#my translation#El Desperado explaining his medical symptoms by making a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure metaphor is extremely El Desperado#Also I tend to leave the honorifics into translations when I can and Hiromu uses one I think most people aren't familiar with here#'senshu' is an honorific like 'san' 'chan' etc but specifically used for active pro athletes#It is way more formal and respectful than Hiromu's usual tendency to just use Desperado's name with no honorific at all#If you love Japanese pro wrestling I do recommend getting to know and listening for honorifics and who uses which ones for who and when#Also if you use machine translation stuff and it spits out the word 'player' somewhat at random into pro wrestling stuff that's prob why#It gets confused by the senshu honorific and 'translates' it by inserting the word 'player' into sentences when people use it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"If I liked someone, I would hide it in the depths of my heart forever. I would never speak of it aloud, nor would I ever let anyone know."
so anyway I am watching this show now because there's not a lot to watch (for some reason I've gone off on a ZLH backlog and I do love to see Bailu) and omg don't spoiler but-
Xie Wei is talking about himself right, very hypothetically and this is not about Jiang Xuening at all :skull emoji: did he like her from like four years ago when they were going to the capital ... what's going on xie wei sir lmao as far as she knows he's whipped out his dagger 🗡️ like actually- at her more than a few times 😩 also, yo, is he also living a second life? (ok no spoil).
#cdrama#bai lu#zhang linghe#story of kunning palace#so i was following this up till the planned release in like may and then it got held up for many hot secs remember the weibo page was fried#and i was like its over we are never seeing the light of day#vaguely recall its sze related#but its here and when it came out i didnt actually watch it right away why idk but#anyway im here now!#i am shipping the zhang gongzhu and jiang xuening is tht ok#also jeeeebus wang xingyue is here what a roster#love to see it haha#t/n: *liked#but as in more than just “like” yk#in chinese we never use the actual word for love (as in, 爱 (ai))when talking about this particular sentiment in this context#it's 喜欢 (xi huan) always#which means a general non-specific “like” in some/most contexts (ie. I like lychees) but in this context it's really Not That#it is quite a bit more than that ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)#the 我喜欢你 thing is not really a cn specific thing tbh i would say japanese is the same and even english to an extent idk OwO

To make my stance clear for my posts on here, this blog is stricly a spoilers yes leaks no zone.
#though i think that was apparent from my posts but i'm making it clear lol#spoilers include: episode titles summaries and staff lists released in official japanese magazines which then get translated#i'm also including the posts of anpk pr account in the spoilers sphere (ep screenshots and official posts hinting at future developments)#i tend to be curious about ep titles officially released in mag so i can have fun speculating and thinking more about upcoming developments#and i like knowing the staff list so i can point at the writer and go like#'this is written by this specific writer so that means x or y will happen and they tend to take care of x or y character episodes' etc#everything else is a big no.#personal stance on leaks: abbhorent behavior and i find it upsetting that it's so common#spreading lies and misinformation is loathful and using that as basis for analysis? big dislike#and i personally feel strongly about it for hz specifically#as it is a story made by lead writers who consider writing and animation as a full art form which can convey something#writing as a full artistic endeavor with the intent of conveying something.#anyway. that's all

Me, first learning kana: Wow I love how straightforward Japanese pronunciation is, it's really nice to not have to wonder how things are pronounced.
Me, learning kanji: oh what the fuck actually
Me, now learning about the types of keigo and how they affect conjugation and pronunciation:
#did you know that there's levels of formality to japanese speech?#which don't just determine the words you use and your tone of voice but also the conjugation and pronunciation!#basic words like ''eat'' dound entirely different based on who you're speaking to!#the standard formality levels are polite (keigo) - casual - rude#and keigo has four (or five depending on who you ask) subtypes! with varying levels of formality and unique pronounciations!#and those types are standard formal (what language lessons start out by teaching)#elevating the other person's status (when talking about someone who is a higher social rank than you)#humbling yourself (when talking about yourself to or in comparison to someone who is a higher social rank than you)#and humbling yourself (when there isn't really anyone who is a higher social rank than you but you want to sound polite and not braggy)#and depending on who you ask there's also a ''beautifying'' one where you add specific sounds to words to make them sound prettier#like saying お寿司 (o-sushi) instead of just 寿司#there are pronunciations and phrases that are completely unique to each kind of speaking style#and many of them are irregular and have to be memorized individually#i am going to fucking die#日本語の学生#japanese langblr#langblr

Look, I'm not interested in playing Palworld and I've been actively avoiding the drama/controversy so I'd be perfectly happy with forgetting it's existence and moving on with my life if it weren't for just how obsessively UNHINGED the Palworld fandom is, barging in on EVERY. SINGLE. recent Pokémon post on multiple platforms just to pick fights and shill the hell out of their game to (most of the time) confused Pokémon fans who are wondering what Palworld is and where these people came from.
I saw this wonderful art of the Kamado battle in Legends Arceus and the Champion battle in Sun and Moon on Instagram and I shit you not, a good 70% of the comments are entirely Palworld people just ranting and yelling about how Pokémon sucks, Palworld is going to kill Pokémon, anybody who likes Pokémon is a bootlicker and are riding Pokémon's 🍆, how anyone who complains about Palworld is a (and I quote) """"saviourf*g""" for Nintendo etc
Like, I just wanted to share my nostalgia about Sun and Moon and so did a lot of other people considering that there were still people talking about it, but it was hard to find those comments because they were drowned out by the Pals Vs Pokémon warzone.
And the second someone says something a Pal fan doesn't like, it eventually devolves into the Pal fans throwing homophobic slurs around and calling the Pokémon fans neckbeards, and shills and basement dwellers and such.
I'm sure there's probably sane fans who are just happy going about and making their Pals break rocks or whatever, but a majority of the Palworld fans I've encountered so far are like edgy screaming 4Chan people. Like, holy shit I wish they would just go to their own Palworld fan pages instead of invading Pokémon and turning every comment section into the embodiment of this meme.
(And I just want to address the whole "Pokémon Company is posting a lot more often recently because they're obviously scared of Palworld, lmaoooo why else would they suddenly start actively posting after months of radio silence 😎" argument that I've seen dozens of times.
First of all, the Pokémon channel/profile is always posting random game/anime/art screenshots. There hasn't been a sudden drastic increase of posts.
Second of all, it's A MONTH UNTIL POKÉMON DAY. THEY DO THIS EVERY YEAR. The influx of Snorlax posts is a promotional thing for Pokémon Sleep. Pokémon's just carrying on with their regularly scheduled hype building/ promotional stuff and the Palworld fans think it has something to do with them.(
#pokémon#tw: slurs#I wish they'd just go enjoy their game and leave us alone to enjoy ours 😭#I don't wanna see all the insults and fighting#I haven't even been playing Pokémon recently I've been playing Kirby 😭#All I wanted to do is look up some Pokémon art memes and plushies is that so bad?????#The saviour*redacted* thing is something that someone called me specifically 🙃#I can't remember what comment it was under#I think it was someone accusing Ogerpon of being a Pal ripoff and I pointed out that Ogerpon is inspired by a Japanese myth or something#From my very outside perspective it looks like Palworld is only popular because its fueled by internet rage#I wish people were this defensive about Yokai Watch when it came out. I love that game :(

I was looking up "how many words to learn to read japanese" and oh my was there a surprising result. The various reddit posts seemed to say at least 10,000 words as that is what is on N1, while also saying it may just be the beginning of reading at 10,000 words and you'll still be looking up many words per page.
I am a bit confused by this answer, and still looking for a possibly truer one. Im looking for: how many words must a person learn in japanese to start reading materials for native speakers, if they look up a word every few sentences? Or even 1-3 words per sentence to start. So this would be maybe 80-90% reading comprehension (and with word lookup they'd boost that to 90% or more), with some simpler materials (like say Yotsuba or Ranma or School Rumble mangas) being 90% comprehensible before word lookup (and 95% or more comprehensible after word lookup).
For comparison: in French the number of words to start reasing was 1000-2000 (at least what I personally experienced), with 1000 being when I could read if i looked up 1 word per sentence or a a few words a paragraph. Chinese was also 1000-2000, the average webnovel felt more comfortable once learning 2000 words (at which point looking up 1-3 words or less a sentence or paragraph became doable), and for novels for children and some manhua just knowing 1000 words was enough to read while looking words up (for example, 秃秃大王 would be very readable with a 1000 vocabulary you know and looking up a word every sentence or so, and if your vocabulary is higher you may only look up words once every few paragraphs). For both french and chinese, once i learned lets estimate around 3000 french words or 3000 chinese hanzi (which is ultimately over 3000 words they can combine into which you can guess the meaning of... maybe by several thousand more), then there were at least SOME reading materials that could be read extensively with NO word lookups and using only context to guess the meaning of everything. In short: french and chinese basically matched up to what most "learn to read in a language" articles suggest you learn, which is around 2000 words to start reading with the aid of dictionary/translation word lookup, and then eventually work your way toward a goal of ~9000 words to read most materials comfortably. And along the path from 2000-9000 words, you'll find some materials that become readable to you aa you learn more words - without any dictionary/translation aids.
With Japanese reddit learners (as thats the forums i could browse): Refold learning plan used to suggest learning Tango N5 and N4 and 1000 basic kanji, so around 1000-2000 words, then to immerse with reading (sometimes at first just japanese show subtitles). The older Mass Immersion Approach (same overall study methods) used to do the 2,000 Core Japanese deck, or a personally made variant, and then around the end of that suggest people start including practicing reading. Sometimes people used the Core 6000 Japanese anki deck (more words), or used the nukemarine Lets Learn Japanese deck (i did this... it had 6000 words, around 2000 kanji, and tae kims grammar guide in it, and then later on some additional vocabulary from specific shows... i only learned about 1000 kanji and 2000 words from this deck before stopping). So for MIA and Refold learners, at least SOME of them started reading with word lookups around 2000-6000 words learned.
My question is: when did YOU feel comfortable starting to read Japanese reading materials for native speakers, with the use of word lookup tools (translation/dictionary)? When do you see some people got comfortable starting to read with word lookups? Did some people do something like Satori Reader (graded reading app) when they'd learned X words, until they'd increased their vocabulary to Y words? What was the vocabulary level at which they started to read japanese with word lookups? I think that for a lot of people, the point when they started reading materials for native speakers (with the help of word lookup tools) was Before they had learned 10,000 words.
(Ignore grammar knowledge, yes that greatly effects reasing comprehension. Id just like to focus on number of words a person knows when they start reading with word lookups).
#rant#how many words to read japanese#japanese#japanese langblr#studyblr#yes i am going to go dive into reddit again and see if i can find any posts of ppl specifically mebtioning starting reasing at X words#because with the seadch terms i used... i was only seeing the recommendation 10k words first.#wjereas i suspect Refold and MIA subreddits might mention the vocabulary learners had when they initially started reading
