One more semi umbraclaw related thought for tonight-mainly cause I haven’t played since last post yes this dawned on me-but you know what I realized? Despite the fact my currents thoughts are “this is game is neat but there’s definitely some weird design choices made” it made me realized why platformers are like the genre of games I can always play and commit to: They actively encourage you to keep trying and figure out how to play right even with all the bullshit they throw at you. A lot of games do this yet there’s something specifically more appealing about this to platformers cause it’s down to learning to navigate stages. Other games its usually just fighting whatever in your way but here its that but with terrain being your main obstacle. And also just the fact platformers are short enough games to keep my attention span LOL but also prove to be more replayable for these reasons, cause it’s short AND the more you play the better you get.

Nero spends all of DMC5 like 'I think there's been some sort of mistake, it specifically says in my contract that I'm supposed to be the angsty emo edgelord young punk character with the attitude problem, nobody mentioned shit about me having to be the responsible straight man.'

I like to imagine Dante's able to use some basic magic beyond just typical demonic stuff. In the opening of DMC1, a magic circle appears below Trish when Dante shoots the motorcycle back at her, so I like to think Dante knows some basic spells, wards, and the like. For the most part he uses it for little things like making a special lock for his Devil Arm vault, maybe heating up soup or a drink that's gone cold, and so on, rather than any combat things. Dante's spells are not at all refined and he doesn't have a natural talent for it, per se, but he has a lot of power he can put into things so he often ends up brute forcing whatever it is. It's not necessarily efficient, but it works, and that's all he cares about. He's not really interested in most precise or specific things.

Vergil on the other hand has a lot more control and a much greater interest in magic in general. A post DMC5 Vergil (and pre DMC3) would use magic a lot more often, and without as much prep. He spent a lot of time learning different charms etc. to use in daily life, and he's a lot more elegant about it. Some he learned when on the run and trying to hide from demons, while others he learned when trying to track down Sparda, and others still he learned for purely convenience reasons. Post DMC5 he gets a lot more into it than he did pre DMC3 when it was more a thing of survival, even if it had the convenience aspect back then too. He's the kind of person who would learn spells for the sake of knowing them, and while he prefers using demonic abilities in combat, he might try to learn a magical combat spell or two just to see what it's like. He mostly sticks to practical things though (which sit on the border of practicality, but he considers them practical, uses them often, and makes Dante's magic look like child's play).

On the magical third (regrown!) hand, Nero's absolutely horrible at magic, to the point of not being able to do basically anything. He's got the magical reserves, but unlike Vergil who can cast precise spells with relatively little effort, or Dante who gets through spells by basically overloading them until they work, Nero just can't get magic to work for him at all. Lessons with Vergil end with him stomping out when he gets fed up with Vergil commenting on how easy it should be, while attempts to get Dante to explain how he casts magic end in frustration when Dante's explanations basically start and end at "I dunno, it, it just works." Sure Nero can memorize and draw a warding sigil perfectly, but any and all attempts to get it to actually do anything end in failure.

Kyrie, in a reveal that surprises everyone, most of all herself, is apparently extremely talented at magic, which she does not know until she sees Nero trying and failing to activate a warding sigil Vergil taught him, puts a finger on it so she can trace over it as she reviews Nero's work in case he messed something up, and inadvertently activates it. After that they end up doing some testing and discover Kyrie is a natural when it comes to magic. The only problem is that while casting spells, activating sigils, and the like come easily to her, her magical reserves are rather small, limiting what she's able to do. When she first activates the sigil Nero had drawn, she ends up unable to get up and Nero has to carry her to bed (which she insists he doesn't have to do, because she just needs a minute to catch her breath, but he insists on)

Nico is stoked to hear about this and ends up figuring out a way to essentially fit Kyrie and Nero with a magic converter that allows Kyrie to draw on the magical reserves Nero can't utilize so that she can use them for whatever she wants to. While Kyrie isn't someone who really cares to use magic for things in her daily life like Dante and Vergil, she does use it to make little charms for the kids, and to establish wards around the house to protect them from demon attacks and other small misfortunes. She and Vergil end up bonding a little bit as he teaches her the spells and other bits of magic Nero was never able to pick up on.

(Vergil himself feels a mixture of pride at how quickly she picks up on things with his instruction, and jealousy when he sees how good she is at things first or second try when he knows it took him a good five or ten attempts to get it down when he was first learning. Kyrie notices and tells him that he's still much better than her in the long run since he's able to use magic without needing a separate "battery" to power him, but Nero absolutely digs into Vergil about it when Kyrie isn't there. Dante meanwhile finds it all hilarious. But he and Nero are pretty proud of Kyrie too.)

I love Dante so much. He's one of most fave Mcs ever. He's silly, he's cheesy, depressed, and he never gets laid in the games.

Someone who doesn't know the games could think 'wow there sure are some pretty ladies out there. Bet they get quite some romance.'

But no, DMC1 Trish is literally a carbon-copy lookalike of Dante's dead mother created specifically to lure him to death. Top awkward life. He ends up befriending her.

DMC2 Lucia might have some feelings for Dante but his in his silent depressed era so he's not in the mood. Ends up befriending her.

DMC3 Lady just has her own thing going on. They fight, she tries to kill him multiple times, he tries to flirt with her but she's in her bitter anguish era at the moment. They end up becoming friends.

DMC4 is not Dante centric anymore and DMC5 is not Dante for romance either.

there's something to be said about lady having an absurd amount of scars unlike any other character. specifically take dante: there are already an obscene amount of parallels between them as DMC3 loves shoving in your face ("what would you know about family", the lyrics to devils never cry, etc.), but lady has the scars to prove what she's suffered through. dante does not and never will. i think it's part of why he kept that busted up glove at the end of DMC3—not just to remind him of vergil, but as some sort of proof. this also owes to them having such a deep mutual understanding of each other's trauma, which morrison cares to point out in his letter in DMC5. there's a lot more to it than this, but i doubt i'll be able to cohesively explain it lmfao

A timeline of the evolution of my relationship with Vergil von Devil May Cry (for fun):

1) Played DMC 1 back in like 2015. Felt bad for the guy, but did not have a lot of context

2) Played DMC 2 back in like 2015. This has nothing to do with Vergil I just want everyone to understand that I have suffered

3) Played DMC 3 back in 2015. Thought “wow that guy kinda sucks” and moved on with my life

4) Browsed the internet for Dante fan art circa 2015. Accidentally saved a bunch of Nero fan art because he looks exactly like Dante and I hadn’t played DMC4 yet so I had no idea who he was. Researched Nero after I realized. At this point there was technically no official confirmation that Nero was Vergil’s son, but that was what the fandom seemed to have settled on. Thought “wow how did that dweeb loser manage to get laid?” and moved on with my life

5) DMC4SE came out in 2015. Played ten minutes but my terrible laptop couldn’t handle it. Vowed to get back to it when I got a better computer

6) The date is now October 2024. I finally got back to it. Laughed at the irony of Vergil having a son that acts just like Dante, but otherwise opinion didn’t change

7) Still October 2024. Played DMC5. Thought “wow this guy still kinda sucks”, but slightly more fondly. I am happy to see him and Dante getting along in the end. Still questioning how his -10,000 rizz self got a lady to like him for long enough to make a child

8) November 2024. Discover the Vergil Meme Economy. Find myself entertained by him immensely despite still thinking he’s a loser dweeb virgin

9) All of this happens basically in November from here on out. Resign myself to the DMC hyperfixation. Choose to replay DMC3. As I am replaying, notice that Vergil is much more like Dante than he lets on. Curiosity piqued

10) Finally listen to Bury the Light. Oh my god it’s an exploration of Vergil’s mindset and trauma. Also, total banger. Listen to it so many times YouTube gave me a badge for it (this is not a joke here’s the proof)

11) Rewatch the Arkham fight cutscenes a couple of times on YouTube. Someone in the comments notes that Vergil does a little grin just before he and Dante say “Jackpot”. Rewatch, confirm. Oh no. I have just realized that Vergil is a tsundere. Likability stonks rising rapidly

12) The evidence is piling up. I’m noticing more and more little things that endear him to me. I am now in my “I hate Vergil” *covers the walls with pictures of Vergil* era

13) Read Visions of V. The five stages of grief are not a straight line, but we have finally arrived at acceptance. I admit that I just like Vergil now

All in all I still don’t think he’s a likable character. He has the demeanor and temperament of a wet cat. If you offered to let me give him a swirly I probably would. However, he is a compelling character, and in this instance that’s arguably better than being straight up likable. It feels like I went on a little adventure picking apart all of his history and quirks and idiosyncrasies

Honestly I love that the community is so passionate about this series in general and Vergil specifically. I was like five years late to the party, but it was still fun exploring both new and old commentary on the games/Vergil’s character, and just seeing all the love and the excitement and the joy about it
