I apologize in advance for how long this might be. As a reminder, I don't bash games here so even if I hated something with every fiber of my being...I ain't sharing. As a second reminder, my more in depth reviews and live blogging has moved to Gem's Game Gems so I don't clutter the HBG's main blog. Okay. ON WITH THE REVIEW!!

DEMOS

Diffraction (Demo)- A rainy day otome indeed. I love the quiet gentleness of this game, the two romance options, and the fact that our MC is a photographer and struggling with her art and stack of life "failures" (because...SAME!!)

Alaris - I was asleep and now I am awake: I came late for the advertised fae and dragon lore, stayed seated and waiting for Fenir zjgjdf. Oh, and I guess the mystery surrounding our MC's abilities LOL.

The Summit Library - When I say I was maaaaaad when I realized I blew through chapter 1 and would have to go back to waiting for more content??? LOL, I was very miffed. Anyhoo, check out this title for the gorgeous art, another intriguing mystery (like what is *up* with the magic in the poor library?? who or what is to blame?? 👀) and of course the lovely characters we've been introduced to thus far.

Of Sense and Soul - I'm a regency romance girl. Like after you strip away the other stuff, I am but a poor woman with simple needs: a good ass love story 🤧💛 It's about the yearning and the slow burn and the will they/won't they/PLEASEEE they...I've never been so charmed by a demo, and the full game is going to be amazing I just know it!

Made Marion - This project is a game I've been keeping tabs on for a hot minute but hadn't taken the time to sit and properly enjoy the demo. I'M SO GLAD I DID!!! It's in early access now, so I'm hoping eventually I'll be able to carve out some time to play, but guysss Velvet Cupcake is doing the Thing?!? No idea which love interest I'll go for first, but I had a fun time meeting the Nottingham peeps in the demo.

Herotome (Super Demo) - Oh gosh. Oh gosh oh gosh oh my GOSHHH. Where do I even began?? (Really the question is where the hell do I end because this is one of those projects I talk about a lot/think about a lot and surprisingly haven't run out of things to say zkjfksjd). Another game I've been following for a while, it 100% lives up to the superhero genre in its aesthetic, the characters you interact with, the music and sound design, and of course the slowly unfurling story. Jade and Mia had come out as my top faves, Warden is still there, like hovering in the backgroud, shhhh but I have a special place in my heart for Griffin too (that conversation we have with her?? I have so many screenshots just so I can go back and reread and sear the words in my brain. Like a weirdo. Yup.)

Celestial Crowns - Stats building, celestial royalty, dating sim where you fuck around and find out your choices directly affect your MC's personality?? I'm sat. I supported the Kickstarter and now I try to practice patience for the full game's release siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighh.

Please note this is a SUPER abridged list for my sanity and I fell a little more in love with these 2 jams with each entry I played...

Intertwine - As embarrassing as it sounds, I've never given much thought to the "red string" thing, and I consume more than enough romance media LOL!! But Van is suuuuuch a beautiful man, the UI for this game is so interactive and lovely, the music is ALSO lovely, just lovely-love all the way around teehee. (Also this game encourages replayabillity so like, do with that info what you will.)

Spring Boy [Demo] - I believe this game is going through a complete rehaul, so my thoughts and feelings refer to the original jam entry I played. The art is bright and cute and it's a super super short demo, but I was intrigued by the other student we meet on our mission to plead with our professor about our bombed exam lol!

Assignment Due: Project Blue - IRl group projects??? Suck absolute ass. Group projects with a guy name Asher?? Suddenly it's my new favorite thing in the world 😁

Cryptid Campaign Manager [DEMO] - Remember the last time I looked over a cryptid dating sim??? Remember how I was SUCH a fool?? Good thing I didn't make that mistake again!! The prologue is such a tease but you get an idea of what the full game is gonna be like, and I'm excited to see where my career involving love (and politics) goes!

Heart Cage [Demo] - Yoooooo I stay my ass far far far away from yanderes (could never get into the trope or the character type). WELP. Guess I just needed to keep searching because I really downloaded this off a whim--well, the whim being one of my fellow dev peers playing and rating-- and proceeded to get sucked in 🤧I thought being a detective would be the highlight, but I guuuueeesssss I was more into the romance options than I thought. Oops.

Evernight - I tried to explain what this game meant to me on the side blog, but words failed me. I still don't know what to say other than I loved it?? Which is like ummm I say I love everything, and yeah I'm easy to please BUT Y'ALLLLLL if you play no other game, play this one. Please. Date a werewolf. Or a vampire. Or a fae. Plz. Also figuring out the mystery of your MC's abilities and past is just delightful, ugh.

Bright Oak (demo) - Anotha one I wrote about on the side blog!!! Play this one!!! The writing is lush and atmospheric and the characters are all delightful and it's another game with a mystery to untangle!

The Faithfulness of the Universe- This one gets the award for most unique all around entry that I played. Theeeeee prettiest pixel art to bless my eyeballs, and this tasty mystery concerning Fate and witch Faustina's future (or lack thereof 👀) and what it all means. As a player I very much want to know what it all means!

A Cup For All Seasons - Another game that needs its flowers y'all. It's short but super healing and super cozy and the voice acting and music really tie the gaming experience together???

The Working Woman's Guide to Burning Bridges - DEMO - It's the way I played the demo twice and I've been thinking about it ever since 😭😭😭🙃 obviously life happens and things come up, plus this was a demo. But. BUT!!! I am on my hands and knees prayinnggg the team gets together again to finish the game. I love playing as a stressed, lowkey bitter hot mess who doesn't have her life together 😂somehow the fictional version is soooo much more entertaining!!!

Keyframes (Spring Demo) - After the game College Craze, this is legit THE college, slice of life visual novel of my dreams. I cannot wait for the updated demo next year, and the Kickstarter whenever that rolls around. And now that the developer is on Tumblr, I've definitely been stalking the account and reading each new post like it's my day/night/weekend job 🤧

Hello Counsel 💋 - Okay I take it back, Evernight is like a 20/10 but Hello Counsel is like an 100/10 👁️👄👁️ This game is necessary for my mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health, alright? The banter ✅ the character designs ✅ the music ✅ the sizzling chemistry between Poise and Salem ✅ I wish this game had more buzz because IT'S SO GOOD!!! (also the dev, Miseri, is who I wanna be when I grow up. I've made it through almost their whole backlog of games and there are no misses and EVERY game is different from the rest and it makes it hard for a toodler dev--ME--to cope LOL)

Candied Hearts - Isekaied into a candy themed game?? Sign me TF UP!!! (Peppermint I love you dearly, you must understand.)

The Knight's Dilemma - I don't even know how I originally stumbled upon this??? I just know it had been in my backlog for a hot minute and I was intrigued enough to save it way back when. Y'ALL WHY DIDN'T I PLAY SOONER SKJFHFJFH! There's a couple different endings, I loved the voice direction, AND it's such a simple concept of a game that was just executed beautifully.

Trouble Comes Twice - If I had to make a top 5 list of romance VNs, guess who makes the list?? Guess. Guess guess guess. Have you guessed yet??? LOL! I have been in love with TCT since it's development days and with each passing month, waiting in anticipation, playing the Pateron beta builds, screaming on the main blog about every single thought I had about Jace and Hazel (shoutout to Jace for helping me figure out *me*) Lol if you're curious about said thoughts, those posts are on this blog and not the side blog.

Aelfric the Wondrous - 10/10 would love to forget my first play through JUST to have that experience fresh again 😭😭💛Cute and funny and a wonderful parody type game all around.

A Summer's End - Hong Kong 1986 - Goodness, there's no excuse for why this took me years to finish but anyhoo, I finished, I loved it, I recommend it! It's romantic and achingly authentic and the art is soooo gorgeous I literally can't stand it 😭

The Things You Do For Love - Unhinged yandere manages to entertain and garner sympathy and laughter from Gemini. And that poly ending is chef's kiss too????

Band Camp Boyfriend - There are a handful of games I found and loved before I began my game development journey, and this is one of them. BCB is so dear to me, because of the story and characters but also because of the Dynamic Duo creators and their team behind the scenes. I was never a band kid I was a chorus kid but just as the band geeks loved this game to pieces, us normal folks do too!! Even the boys who I didn't like I STILL managed to find joy in playing their routes (still have a few more to finish at the time of this posting lol, GOTTA GET THE FINAL ROUTE YO). Anyway, this game more than delivered for me and I hope more people keep discovering it!!

Belle Automata: Chronicle I [RELEASED] - While only Chronicle 1 is out at the time of this posting, I already know that the 2nd and 3rd parts are going to be just as amazing???? I wrote about this one on the side blog, so here's my copypaste that still rings true:  

I love TNP (The Nightmare Prince) but Victor’s route hit the sweet spot for me. Maybe it’s the slow(er) burn nature of this route, maybe it’s the reserved nature of Victor and watching him slowly start to care (AND NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THOSE FEELINGS TEEHEE) for me.

A Date with Death - I wrote about this on the side blog--again--. The demo. And then right after finishing a route. And then again where I was fully awake and still managed to sound deranged. No copypaste for that, I shall be nice. But yeah!! Another game where I was screaming at the sky about how much I love it and how I'll never know peace as long as I live.

Our Life: Baxter DLC - I need to offer an official apology to both Cove and Derek because falling head over heels, down the stairs, crashing into the parking lot, falling again but down a manhole for Baxter's infuriating ass was NOT on my 2023 bingo board??? HELLO???? I bought his DLC just to complete my OL collection. Was not expecting to love it this much. Was not expecting to be called to write fanfic and abandon all responsibilities to do this. WHILE DOWN WITH COVID TOO. Allow me to play the song of my people. *Send in the Clowns plays*

Our Cinderella - (this is so funny I'm taking about a side game before the main game LOLOLOLOL) Guys. Guysss. You guyyyysss 🥹if you're looking for a cozy, hilarious, equally oddly and wonderfully sweet short game, this is the one!! You may have your personal favorite Iggy ship (like me) but all the pairings are so amazing and just make sense lol!

Wylde Flowers - This is the only non visual novel game on here but it gets the spotlight because I did NOT spend 90+ hours on this game to gatekeep this beauty. No. It the coziest, the funniest, the funnest, the most addictive Switch game (after Teacup) I've ever played.

Garden of Seif: Chronicles of an Assassin - Life kicked my butt and then sat on me SO while I finally got my grubby hands on the full copy, I still have only played the entirety of the demo. But. We will return to this in 2024 and hopefully I'll have a full review for the next wrap up!

Our Wonderland - I looked back at the side blog and I can't believe it was only THIS year that I started OW??? Because I'd known of the game and the dev for longer than that??? So basically what I'm saying is that I was chicken shit for longer than I've been in love with this world that Developer Carrot has created kjzhhshggj. But OMG to get me, who is scared oh so easily to get hella invested in this clearly labeled horror game??????????????? And even with shit gets super absurd and hella disturbing, I cannot stop playing. At the time of this post, I'm only in Act 4, hence the category above, but it's only because I play each act in a sitting and lose track of space and time and myself. That's a compliment btw.

Okie!! That's 2023 in a nutshell! I played a looooot of really good games this year and while I would have liked to talk about them all, I think this list provides a nice overview.

Okay VICTORY SEX TALK (we ignore that I’m about to sit through a oral exam in 15 minutes, because priorities)

Going back to the 4 finger ask, I saw a tweet about how every single one of Maxs championchips is special, 2021 was the toughest battle ever, 2022 he overcame be biggest deficit in the beginning, 2023 he dominated everything and now this year he did prove to all the haters that it’s not just the car, he’s just THAT good!!!

And you better believe that Charles will tell max exactly that all night, praising him and going through the championships while Max is red and whining and just wants Charles to hurry up and he doesn’t unterstand why Charles won’t just give to him what he deserves, because he just won a championship!!! But Charles takes his time and makes sure that Max understands just how proud Charles is and how big his competence kink for max is!!!!

And also can you imagine Charles when he gets back from the debrief, late to the party, angry, worried that he can’t shake off his frustration and will ruin Max‘s night but then he sees Max in the club and how happy he is and he realises that he doesn’t have to worry about all that because immediately, he feels happy too and doesn’t care about what happened (at least for the night), he just wants to celebrate Max and with Max and yeah, maybe he ends up in the background of some instagram stories because he won’t leave Maxs side all night BECAUSE THATS HIS BABY AND HES SO HOT WHEN HE JUST GOT CROWNED WDC!!!!

Everyone was concerned bc Charles disappeared for 11 hours after the race, but it was just because he didn’t open his phone once and spent all night with Max

thanks for the tags @reyesstrand, @tellmegoodbye, @marjansmarwani and @lire-casander for the tags! love you all 💚 listen. i have been through some series finales in my time. bbc merlin. bbc atlantis. bbc robin hood. supernatural. the good place. the umbrella academy. for individual reasons, none of them felt quite like this. lone star is probably the first time i've ever been quite so involved in a fandom. it's been a huge part of my life for six years, six years in which i have been through two degrees and got a job, so i'm going to share six memories, one from each year.

2020: picture this: you are me, aged 18. the world has just started going crazy and you have no idea what's going to happen regarding university, which you have barely started. you're scrolling on tumblr when this new show starts popping up, and you ignore it for a while but then you see a gifset of one of the characters overdosing so you sigh and decide to check it out. cue bingeing every available video on youtube and a swift descent into obsession which leads to writing two fics before you've seen a full episode. good times.

2021: the first season i watched as it came out (though not live that time). also notable that my mental health crashed and burned in early 2021 and lone star was one of the few things that got me through that period. i remember having a really bad day once, and the only happy moment i had was watching bad call for the ?????? time. this was also the year of not one, but two angst weeks, and my 20th birthday fic celebration, which i loved doing.

2022: ah yes. season 3. my first time watching live, and honestly the experience of watching push and freaking out in real time was. well. this was when i really became a part of the fandom and joined some discord servers, where i made some amazing friends. there was discourse, which was fun and highly irritating, and i went to the dinah convention which...was probably a low point tbh but there were good moments.

2023: this was a weird year, as i very much started to step back from the fandom. some things had happened and i didn't feel comfortable anymore being quite so social. but who can forget watching the double episode season finale live? fun fact: this was the night before an important exam yet i still decided to stay up until 3am to watch my silly little firefighter show!

2024: we're going to ignore the year and a half of waiting. i honestly thought i would be okay with the show ending because of the aforementioned step back, but then i met a new group of lovely people and suddenly i was back, not quite in the thick of it, but comfortably present. season 5 has honestly been a bit of a car crash but it has been a joy to share these moments with friends.

2025: i can't believe that it will all be over in a couple of days. i am so grateful to this show for everything it has given me, my pocket friends, some of whom have become real life friends, all the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of being a lone star fan. i'm going to be honest - i don't have the highest expectations for the finale, but i do know that, whatever happens, it's going to be special. and also that i'm never getting this invested in a usa tv show ever again because jesus christ it is torture staying up until the early hours to have the actual show interrupted by ads every five minutes.

[dr. winters] still, based on these factors, i see no real reason to deny your medical on physical grounds. the MRI of your spine was very concerning, but i did read the letter from your rheumatologist clearing you for work again, and you passed all my exams just fine, so it’s not an issue in my eyes unless your disease and/or functioning significantly worsen.

[grant] well, that’s...good?

[dr. winters] not so fast. don't get too excited. as much as i'd like to send you out with your medical today, i can’t.

[grant] alright. fair enough.

[dr. winters] i'm not denying you, to be clear. i'm deferring your case to federal administration.

[dr. winters] this is the unfortunate part. because you suddenly admitted to having previous substance abuse issues, have brand new mental health diagnoses, and are on some medications that are neither approved nor banned, it’s out of my hands.

[dr. winters] you would need a special issuance medical, which is only something the administration can give out.

[dr. winters] if you’re granted one, it is a full first-class medical and will clear you to fly and hopefully approve your current medications with no issues, but it will tag you as having health conditions, and it’ll probably place restrictions on your medical, like more frequent medical exams and no flying if you’re having x, y, and z symptoms.

[grant] okay, sure. what should i do next?

[dr. winters] well, i'll forward all the paperwork from you to them along with my reports from today. at some point, the administration will send you a whole bunch more paperwork in the mail, and they’ll ask you to explain all your medications, your psychiatric history, and why the hell you were diagnosed with multiple psychiatric disorders all at once and so late in life.

[dr. winters] whatever you say, be as honest as possible. i will gently remind you that lying to them is a felony.

[dr. winters] you’ll mail all your responses back to them, and then they’ll tell you to submit to a neurocognitive screen and a psychiatric evaluation. i can go ahead and refer you to doctors who can offer you those screenings. they'll also want statements from any psychiatrists and therapists you've seen basically confirming they think you're stable enough for this kind of employment.

[dr. winters] and finally, after they review all the new materials plus your flight records, you’ll either get approved or denied.

[grant] there's some hope?

[dr. winters] yes. you have held a medical before. you'll just have to jump through more hoops this time to prove your capabilities. worst case scenario you lawyer up and sue until you get results. and no, i'm not joking. in complex cases like yours, i often recommend a lawyer.

[grant] i don’t want a lawyer.

[dr. winters] at least not yet. don't count the legal route out. the worst worst case scenario is that you're denied. if they deny you and you feel that's unfair, the law is the only solution you have left.

The new Slovenian film 'Kaj pa Ester?' is targeted primarily at teenage audiences, but Tosja Flaker Bercet's fun, relaxed film will also appeal to older audiences. And it looks like the film will be a hit not only in Slovenia, but also abroad, as fans of Joker Out from all over Europe are waiting for the film to come to their cinemas - the male protagonist is played by the much-loved Bojan Cvjetićanin.

In 2021, after a long search for the main character, the director invited Bojan Cvjetićanin, the lead singer of a band that was on the verge of success at the time, to audition. Today, Bojan would not have had time to record due to concerts in Europe and other projects (their new album and concert film 'Live From Arena Stožice' is available on www.jokeroutband.com), but back then, it was not a problem for him, so we can admire him in the film alongside the excellent Katja Predan and other young co-stars.

The film is about Ester, who is not pleased when she discovers that her ex-boyfriend, who wants to rebuild their romance, has enrolled at the same high school. Kaj (played by Bojan) tries to show his love for her with romantic gestures, but his moves impress his classmates more than Ester. Ester finds herself in a difficult situation, as her classmates are mean to her because they think she should give Kaj a second chance, but instead she agrees with a friend to act like a lesbian couple... The Ljubljana premiere of the film took place at Cinemaplexx and the whole crew came to see it. Before that, we had the exclusive opportunity to talk to the two main actors. Bojan was five minutes late, but given his frenetic schedule and mild cold, we didn't blame him. Over tea, he and Katja were happy to look back on the filming and joked around, jumping into each other and generally getting on well.

Katja, you are 24 years old and finishing your third year of film directing studies at AGRFT¹.

I'm still one exam away...

So you prefer to be behind the camera than in front of it?

Actually, it was good in front of the camera too. (smiles)

How did you get this role?

That's a good story! I was waiting for a friend who was half an hour late for a drink. But I was sitting at another table, with a friend from high school, when Tosja joined us. He introduced himself, and I told him I knew him. He told me they needed another actress because they were filming something and offered me to come and try it out. I wasn't interested at first, but then I thought that it must be a short film and it wasn't that big of a commitment. When I arrived, I found out that I was auditioning for the main role!

Do you have previous acting experience?

I was in a theatre group, I acted in a play, and then I started directing. That was in the first year of high school. In college I acted in our rehearsals when we were filming, but now I hope to get another chance.

What kind of projects do you want to do as a director?

The ones where people talk a lot (laughs). I'm interested in love themes and situations where nothing special happens and the relationship gets boring.

What was it like working with Bojan?

We've worked together very little because we split up in the film, so we're not a couple anymore. We had two rehearsals together and they were very nice. But we did hang out a little bit.

Can we even project ourselves into the film? The plot itself is absurd, because you want to break up with Bojan - the Bojan who is currently the idol of young girls in this country and in Europe!

Tosja, please write what happened before that! (laughs) Surely Ester had a good reason to leave him.

Have you been dumped by a girlfriend in real life?

Bojan: Absolutely! I wouldn't say I was dumped because I didn't have many girlfriends. But I have been rejected...

So could this happen to you?

Yes, especially when I was as old as Kaj.

How did you land in the film as an actor?

I've always been interested in playing, but due to time constraints, I can't commit to it much, even if I wanted to. When I was invited to audition, I had a free summer. I'm a fan of the series 'V dvoje', one of the writers of is our director Tosja, and the creator was Luka Marčetič, who then also worked on the film, and there are a few other crew members as well. It was an honour to be able to work with them because they created my favourite series.

In the film, you are exactly as you were in real life - they haven't even changed your hairstyle. How so?

I have a lot of contracts that say I can't change it. (laughs) No, it's a joke! Tosja was pleased with my appearance. The film is interesting because the 15-year-olds are played by 20-year-olds and older.

How much time do you have now that you are a European music star?

To be honest, very little. Three days ago I returned from the last tour of the year. I have a cold, of course, so it would be very convenient if I had a couple of days to lie down, but I have the whole premiere day today and tomorrow, a concert on Saturday, and on Sunday we go back to the studio for a week. Then we've got a few more gigs, then we're moving to London for two months, and then we've got a one-month tour. Then we'll probably go to Germany for a month to record the album, and then we'll have another tour soon...

We won't see you much.

Exactly, because there's too much of me everywhere now. (smiles)

How was it on set?

Bojan: It was great for me because I knew the whole team from before.

How did you and Ester* meet? (*T/N: They probably meant Katja)

Bojan: Through mutual friends, maybe even through Mila...

Katja: Haven't we known each other since primary school? Or from the audition for Vičstock?

Bojan: Yes, indeed! Katja was one of the organisers of Vičstock at Vič high school, and I was in one of the bands that wanted to play at the festival. And we did play at Vičstock. We actually know each other from ninth grade - like our characters in the film.

What are you willing to do for love, Bojan? Because your character is very committed in the film to get Ester back.

I have a little wish to find love again, for which I would be willing to do such a big thing. It seems to me that I have not felt that since primary school or the beginning of high school.

Was your first love fatal? Like Kaj's?

Katja: Yes!

Bojan: In my opinion, yes.

And how did your first love end?

Bojan: Ask me if I have a girlfriend.

Do you have one?

Bojan: No. (laughs) I told you that I have been rejected in the past. But I had my first love in kindergarten.

Katja: I remember my first boyfriend from high school. We, of course, had to hide our relationship from everyone, in case we broke up afterwards and embarrassed ourselves. That way nobody knew we were in love and nobody asked anything when it was over.

Have you ever hidden your love?

Bojan: No, I'm like an open book.

Did you have fun during the filming or were you focused the whole time?

Bojan: We had as much fun as we could. It was relaxing.

Katja: I just remember that Diana and I used to rehearse scenes and kiss all the time, thinking that that would keep us in the role...

Have you also been kissing a lot?

Bojan: All the time, but only when the camera was on (laughs).

What did you think of the script?

Katja: For me, the biggest question was why they went their separate ways in the first place, but looking back, I understand Ester more and more.

Bojan: (playing offended) What are you trying to say?

Katja: (laughs) Yeah, he was probably too fixated on her.

What are the differences between you and your characters?

Bojan: The biggest difference is that as a young boy, I was not a loner like Kaj over the years. Kaj wanted to spend time with Ester more than anything, and I see the key problem with their relationship as the fact that it started to suffocate Ester. Ester, in my opinion, wanted to get away from this one-to-one, one-person, all-day contact. Of course, we're young in the film and you have doubts about your first real romantic relationship, but it started to suffocate Ester...

Katja: ...that there is nothing else.

Bojan: Anyway - Ester is not cool, neither is Kaj. She sits at home and plays 'Krofki'² ('Doughnuts').

What do you do in your free time now?

Katja: I like to read and I'm quite similar to Ester in terms of my nerdiness.

Bojan: I like reading too. If I have time during the day to do something, I like to relax as actively as possible, ride a horse or go-kart, fish... In short, something to get the energy out of me. I'm not good at fishing at all, but it calms me down a lot.

Do you like being so busy, travelling so much?

I wouldn't say I have a big problem with the workload. But it is very tiring to travel a lot. Some of the tours have been designed so that we travel by tour bus, which means that I can sleep in a bed in the bus all night between locations and at least be rested the next day.

But is it good quality sleep?

For me, it is the best in the world and I am thinking about how to recreate this rocking coffin at home. Very small and tight, but the best. But if the connections on the tour are by plane, like we had now, for example, when we flew ten times in seven days, it means you only get about four hours sleep a day. And that exhausts you.

What about packing each time?

I've already got it all worked out! Now I don't even take things out of suitcases, I take the shirt from the top and put the dirty things in a bag somewhere at the bottom. I have two big suitcases at home to change.

As an introvert, it was really hard for me to express myself and i really tried to look for ways in which I could express my emotions and feelings. Coming from a Musically-inclined family, musicality came naturally to me. I took part in vocal competitions in school and was always listening to music no matter what the situation at home was like.

It has become a part of me to an extent where I am able to study for my hardest exam with music in the background. It's crazy how music can really keep you under control, get in touch with your own feelings and own your moment. I have been listening to songs from different cultures since i was a kid. I discovered k-pop in 2012-13 when Girls Generation was in their prime and "Gangnam Style" had just been released. I was really into One Direction then and did not really think of delving into anything new as I was comfortable enough.

2018-19 was when I first started to hear my school mates talk about K-pop and I was really curious as to what it was all about. Time skip to 2020 when i first heard "Chicken Noodle Soup" by j-hope on the TV during lockdown. I was very curious about him and he was the first member of BTS that I was able to recognise. I heard about Jungkook a couple of times before that but i did not really know what he looked like.

In 2021, my sister introduced me to BTS with "Film Out"! That song was a God-sent... And i really thank her for sending me a link to that song because it changed my life. "Film Out" is one of their best songs and it holds a very special place in my heart! I started stanning them in April 2021 and my first comeback was "Butter".

It's been 4 years and i still don't regret my decision of stanning them. They basically changed my life, helped me when no one could and made me the person i am today. SEVENTEEN

I first heard of Scoups during the Idol Championships when he competed with Jungkook. I then found out about SEVENTEEN in 2021 when they did "In the Soop" but never really thought about getting into them as I was really occupied with university stuff. In 2023, during their promotion for "FML", I saw a lot of people talking about them online which made me curious enough to go check them out.

"Hot" was the first video that I watched, and i got ADDICTED!!!!???? like please bring Red-haired Minghao back (?) jebal 😭 well, that was enough to help me fall down the rabbit hole. Their personalities stood out to me the most along with their great music as well! GOING SEVENTEEN became a weekly ritual for me (i miss it so bad 😔) and i couldn't go without watching it.

They are like my besties and some of the most relatable idols out there... Lol. Such freaking crackheads, they literally said NOPE to their Idol image.

They are enlisting soon while BTS is coming back, idk whether to be happy or sad. {(⁠･ั⁠ω⁠･ั)}

Enhypen: ( I've already watched "iland" so I know a bit and i have recently started watching "En o'clock" so I'm trying to understand what they are like as individuals. Since Jay's cover of Bon Jovi's "Always", i made up my mind that I HAVE to get into Enhypen. My bias is Heeseung {01 line~chingu} and it's been that way since "iland". Jay is my bias wrecker (?) Slowly, but Surely (Don't Call Me Shirley)

Hello, hello.

i am slowly, but surely, recharging my creative batteries. There's less pressure now, but with good things happening. A detailed account of what's been happening. All below the cut. TLDR at the end.

Let's start with the good.

I went to the Big Gay Market in Madison, WI for the weekend. It was marvelous. There were people of all kinds of genders, an affirming and friendly environment, and so many creatives. I felt like I was in community and it's been a long time since I've felt that way. I was sad when it ended. But I bought the most beautiful wreath to hang in my room. I'll snap a picture of it when I can.

I studied the entire month of June, whenever I had a spare moment and for dedicated study sessions.

I made a total of 300 flashcards, wrote 40 pages in my notebook, used 2 test prep books, 3 learning system books, a 100 page summary of competencies, and 2 apps. I answered 2800 practice questions on those apps. I practiced and practiced until I reached at least an 80% in each competency.

And what happened?

I PASSED.

I kicked that exam in the ass! When I saw "passed" on the screen, I nearly whooped in the testing center. I cried in my car as I relayed the news to my mom, who is also an HR professional. I could not believe it. I still can't. Cal Owens, SHRM-CP. It feels SO GOOD to have letters after my name.

I'm also still on that high of completing my HR Management certificate with "high honors" and then earning my SHRM certification right after it.

Then, at the end of May, right before my birthday, I sent in an application to the Arboretum nearby. They were looking for an HR Coordinator. And they weren't requiring at least 3 years experience or a BS in HR. After the radio silence for a month and a half, I gave up on them getting back to me. I sent a follow-up email, as instructed by my mentor, and still no reply. I figured I was set aside and I moved on to apply for more jobs.

Lo and behold, the Arb emailed last week and offered me a phone interview! I spoke with their Talent Acquisition specialist way past the 30 minute time slot, which I took as a good sign. Next step was to have a virtual meeting.

But guess what? They invited me for an in-person meeting instead! My interview was at 9 AM CST yesterday. it was LOVELY. i genuinely enjoyed speaking to the Sr HR Manager. We chatted for almost 90 minutes. It went by so fast. I felt like I had answers to all her questions, however, I wonder if I was direct and clear enough? I haven't interviewed since 2021, and before that since 2016. So I know I'm rusty, I hope my enthusiasm for the role got noticed.

I should know by early next week if they will move me to the third and final round--meeting the VP of HR. The Coordinator will be responsible for managing the VP of HR's schedule in Google. I just learned how to do scheduling in Outlook, I'm sure I can do it in Google.

Anyway! I can see myself working there. The pay meets the market for that kind of job around here, and the benefits are exceptional. And the view from the admin building? Beautiful. There's just a small lane to walk through from the parking lot to the building. I felt like I was in Jane Austen novel. *Dreamy sigh.*

Fingers crossed.

Okay, so let's get the not-so-good stuff over with.

Caregiving for my father continues to be a challenge. I am the only one of his 3 kids he 100% trusts and is close to. I don't get a lot of support from my sisters because A) he prefers me to handle things and B) they don't offer. I always have to ask, and even then, most of the time I end up doing the thing anyway. Sigh.

I tried a bunch of adaptive equipment things for my dad in June. I bought him an electric tea kettle that sits in a cradle and tips over to pour so you don't have to lift it. Well, it works okay for that, but he can't see how much he's filled the kettle. So that went back. I found a pen that "talks" to you. That's been a game changer. You get special labels with bumps on them, tap the pen to the label, and you can record a sound clip! so i attached them to every medication he has in the house. he's been using the pen! Now I just need to convince him to use his white cane.

Watching my dad go through losing his vision has been very difficult. He's a completely different man than the one I knew just 5 years ago. Little by little, things are changing and that change can get overwhelming. I did manage to find him a peer to peer phone program for folks with low vision. He gets a call every month to chat with a lady name Yvies from New Jersey and just talk about what it's like being low vision. I am so grateful to her. The organization will be creating a caregiver support group in the fall and I am on the waitlist.

So, yes. I've gotten overwhelmed at some points, impatient at others, but I show up. In the future, I want to know, that without a doubt, I was there for my father. I just need to figure out how to balance this and find ways to get help.

I continue to miss Henry and my grandma.

Sometime between this past Saturday and Sunday, I fell ill. Like, nauseated, dizzy, lightheaded. [Content Warning: The GI System Going Whack] Then Sunday, I could not retain food or water. I held out for Monday and Tuesday to see if I got better with a little imodium and zofran. Wednesday morning at 7:30 AM, I called my doctor and she said, "Get thee to the ER."

So, I went. My mother was with me. In miracles of all miracles, I only had to wait an hour to be seen in the ER. I was there from 8 AM to 12:30 PM and in that period of time, I got an ultrasound, labs, an IV with a bag of saline, pain meds, and reassurance that my gallbladder and liver were doing fine. And no one misgendered me. It was a good ER trip.

The ER doctor and my PCP have no idea what knocked me out for 5 days. Could have been a virus. Could have been a side effect of mounjaro. It'll be a mystery for the ages, I suppose...

Of course, it took a huge toll on my body. Today was the first day I felt almost normal again. No bloating, no cramping, no burping, and no intense pain in my abdomen. Yay! I am supposed to be eating "light," but dammit, I deserved pasta tonight and I'm not going to regret it!

I also, in my journey through illness, reached the Medicare donut hole. I have to spend $8,000 before my advantage plan will start paying for my meds again. I have to pay 25% of the cost of all drugs. Thank goodness I was able to get on a patient assistance program for my antidepressant, because I could not afford it otherwise. I've moved all my meds, except two, to be generics. I am always trying to cut the cost down as much as I can, whether it's through GoodRx, OptumRx, or Costco. I spend most of my SSDI money on healthcare, medication, and treatments. If we had free universal healthcare, I would have been able to save up all this money, dagnabit.

The difficult things have been... well... difficult. But they are outnumbered by the good things, which makes me smile.

I am excited to be excited about working again. I am doing my best to visualize myself in that role, going into *my* office and sitting at *my* desk. I see myself growing in that department and becoming a specialist in all things HR. This is what I did as I interviewed for the 24/7 Helpline and I got that job. I saw myself getting on a train to Chicago every day until they'd let me go remote. I saw myself as a city queer again. I felt the train to the city already underneath me. I get that feeling with this role. I feel like, if I get it, I will have a Mary Tyler Moore moment.

She's gonna make it after all!

I really want to take a small trip to Cedarburg, WI. Spend a night there in a bnb, and take in all the shops and restaurants. But my car's oil needs to be changed and my brakes too, so I will have to hold off on traveling for a while.

I would like to get back to work because it's work, but I would also like to get back to contributing to my 401k, saving, paying off my medical debt and car, traveling, and actually affording medication without (too much) sacrifice. Medicare, I was told, would be cheaper than private insurance. Well, I couldn't afford a supplement, so I got stuck with an Advantage Plan. And it's not all that bad (I've met my out of pocket max), but man, do they make it hard to succeed in the system and this is a system primarily designed for seniors??? Sigh.

Anyway!

Hockey is gone. Thank goodness the Oilers didn't win the cup. Pavs retired. Wedgie was traded. Delly was traded. Faksa and Tanev were traded. We kept Dutchy, but that was about it. With a burning passion of a thousand suns, I hate Dumba and DeSmith. They will never be my Stars.

Okay. So. Where does this leave me now?

Well, I am slowly getting back "into" my work as an author. I'm hoping I can read a book or two in the next two weeks. I am inspired by the creativity of others and now that I've passed my exam, I have more free time to read and plot things out in my head.

It also helps to you know... not be extremely dehydrated.

to commemorate lgc’s fourth anniversary, we are bringing back lgc university! for the muns who were not present during last year’s run of the anniversary event, this is an alternate universe ( au ) storyline in which all of the lgc muses are now students of lgc university! in the first iteration of this, all of the muses had to take several tests ( and even a final exam with DBSD’s daehyun as the proctor ) and pass in order to complete the term.

now in this alternate universe, it’s summertime and some people could associate it with summer camps and all, but in lgc university this is the time when they host their yearly house tournament and prom night!

So I love Rose and Scorpius so much, and Al is always an adorable mess of a human being, so here is a little exam stress with Rose and Scorpius!

Exam Stresses

August slipped away in a moment of time….because it was never mine…

Rose groaned as she opened her eyes, her neck hurt and her back felt stiff from sleeping on top of her books again. She hated exam time, she hated waking up early and staying up too late studying when she knew that it was ridiculous to do so. She knew the material, but she was her mother’s daughter, and something inside of her was compelled to spend hours and hours of her time studying up until she put her quill down for her last exam.

Her OWLs were important, they would determine her classes for the next two years, but she kept thinking about the conversation she had with Professor Longbottom, with Neville, the month before exam season. She knew what her parents expected of her, to follow them into the Ministry, to find herself writing legislation like her mum, or becoming an Auror like her dad.

“Alright,” said Scorpius, sliding into the open seat beside Rose at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall, his white blond curls a mess on top of his head, well overdue for a haircut. “We have tea, chocolates, protein bars, warm socks, a pillow, and a water canteen.”

Rose stared at her boyfriend, still in a daze of waking up herself as she sipped her tea and ate her bacon. She missed being in a kitchen, and even though the House Elves would let her cook with them, she knew that she just got in their way. They were always kind to her, appreciative to her for her parents, but it wasn’t the same as her kitchen at home, her recipe cards handed down from her Grandma Jane.

“What?”

“Mum sent an exam care package for you and Al,” explained Scorpius as he handed Rose the neatly wrapped up box, its contents written on the thick butcher paper it was wrapped in, along with a few small illustrations of flowers she had seen around his family’s manor house. “She knows how Al goes all out around exams, and I may of mentioned how you keep falling asleep in the common room.”

Rose took the package, feeling immediately touched by Astoria’s kindness. She knew that their parents, their fathers, were still hoping that they would break up at some point, but being at Hogwarts together…it just made Rose feel even closer to Scorpius. They got to spend so much time together, and they got time apart when they needed the space from one another. They were still able to spend time with their friends outside of one another, they both got to have Quidditch and prefect patrols and classes apart, but without the feeling of never seeing one another.

Not that they really ever needed excuses for that or anything at all, they always had Al.

“That’s so…” Rose was actually at a loss for words, her mum always sent her chocolate for a special treat after exams, but the fact that Astoria sent her a whole care package just to get through the next ten days….

“Don’t worry about it,” said Scorpius as he started adding food to his plate, piling on eggs and bacon and toast that he added copious amounts of butter and jam too. “She likes to do things like that.”

But it was so…so unnecessary.

“I’ll write her between the Charms written and Potions practical today,” Rose told him, even though she felt a sudden spike in anxiety about the thought of not studying in that time.

“Write her after exams,” said Scorpius, his voice stressed and not like himself.

“Okay,” agreed Rose, as Scorpius started eating, and she reached a hand over to cover his free hand with her own and gave him a little squeeze. “Did she send you anything?”

“Of course,” said Scorpius around a mouthful of toast and bacon before reaching for his glass of pumpkin juice, “about twice as much stuff as she sent you and Al, but I didn’t want to make it awkward.”

Rose smiled and leaned over to kiss his cheek before resting her head on his shoulder, so tired. She laced their fingers together, the pair of them sitting together in their own little pocket of quietness in the loudest room of the whole castle. But that was what Rose always loved about her relationship with Scorpius, even in the loudest and nosiest spaces, they had their own quiet.

He felt like her true home.

Nobody asked but I wanted to share anyway, a little bit more about the new stories from This Poll:

The marine biologist and the sea merman

This one is actually a very old story ahsuhsu one of my oldest, actually! I even have art of them posted here when I was much worse at art ahsuhs the two main characters even have stablished designs, that I'm sure I wanna show y'all someday!

Anyway this story has beggining, middle and end and is divided in three main parts. It's a world where mercreatures are things from legends because they purposefully hide themselves from humanity. The merfolk are divided in seven kingdoms, in each kingdom, only one merperson is giant, the Chosen Heir, mers with special powers that are meant to be the rulers and protectors of the seven seas. One of the main characters is a chosen heir from the North Atlantic Ocean called Aegir Sonhavet. He's an young, introverted and kind of naive individual who doesn't understand the true responsibility behind his powers yet. He also feels very isolated.

But the protagonist herself is Caitlyn Brooke, a marine biologist who's studying at a prestigious university by the coast. She loves sailing and decides to go one day alone. Guess what happens? ;)

This story is winning so far so it'll be fun to show a world and characters I'm so familiar with and very attached to <3

2. My own take on a g/t society, high school setting

This is a story of mine that went through SO many changes over the years. I have little stuff written about it, but it has a solid concept. Aaand, catch this: It happens in the same universe as Ethan's, but years later. So yep! This is the hyperon syndrome situation after years of development. A larger percentage of people are giants but the mutation still happens within some humans. So that means most of the giants are still related to the people who retained their human size.

It follows the story of Carol Hopkins, a human who has no mutated DNA in her, which means she'll never become a giant (the syndrome happens to about 20% of the human population). She suffers from Megalophobia due to a trauma from the past.

The story happens when she moves back to her hometown and has to go to a mixed-sizes school, to her dismay. She is the most terrified character I have written yet and I really want to explore the experience of having a phobia, so that's fun.

Oh and she has a childhood friend that became a giant and lied to her that he did so, there's that as well. It's about rekindling connection and dealing with fear, which won't be easy!

3. High school of superpowers with two sizeshifters

This story was my OBSSESSION back at around 2020 - 2021. It's about six characters in a world with superpowers. They study at a high school that has this training program, since everyone in this world develop superpowers at around 19. So we have:

A guy with superstrength

A guy with ice powers

A girl with fire powers (she's the ice guy's rival)

A girl with telekinesis

A girl that can shrink

A guy that can grow

They're all friends but I paired them up. The girl who shrinks is closer to the guy with superstrength, so there's this conflict if she would trust him to handle her with care, considering his power.

The two element friends are rivals and they're in their own little world tbh

As for the guy that can grow and the girl that has telekinesis, they're the main focus and conflict of this story because y'sll know me ahsuhs At the special training exam to awaken their powers, these two are paired up. But the school hides a dark secret, since everyone with superpowers is ranked based on levels of strength. The school oftentimes puts their students in stressful situations so that they can awaken a stronger power.

For these two, they got stuck in a square room, with no exits and no way of escaping. Then the guy starts to grow. Y'all can guess what happens.

They survive, of course, but these two are full of problems now ahsuhs and their budding romance falls apart. So the story is about their reconnection! With the other friends acting as subplots.

4. A spin on Jack and The Beanstalk (or whatever this story was supposed to be)

This one story is very recent, I was using it as writing practice. Since I was very busy, I didn't want to lose the habit of writing, so I created this silly little chaotic story just to spark my imagination and keep the creative juices flowing.

So, little of this silly little idea makes any sense lmao

It follows a girl, who has no name yet, that longed to explore the world outside of her book. She lives in a story book, where there's a fissure in the sky that resembles pages, so she cross through this crack and finds herself tiny in a giant library, filled with books like the one she came from.

Then she finds a Grinder (no idea why I named them this lmaoo), mythological creatures that are basically evil giants like the one from Jack and The Beanstalk. Except... This Grinder is an young man the same age as hers, with a pleasant voice and a handsome appearance, and who's as confused about her existence as she is about his.

The rest is a series of very confusing adventures as this young man goes on a journey to find what the heck a Grinder means, and to see the girl from the book again.

ok so there's quite a story lol

I made friends with this girl in late 2021/early 2022 who is INCREDIBLY obsessed with eurovision. her whole family are superfans. they usually travel to the live shows every year but she couldnt this year because of exams. it's all she would talk about during the month that esc 2022 and then I got my first actual urge to watch esc but I missed the finale cuz I didnt know what day it was airing

we had all of our classes this year together so we got really really close and she knows my special interest is music so when the esc 2023 songs got announced she immediately ran to me first thing in the morning and asked me to listen to all of them. she talked about every song in detail and everything but i liked a few songs and watched the music videos, fell in love with jere but still not hooked on watching esc. I dont know I didnt wanna sit through all that especially with exams

I missed all the semis too, I got caught up with exam prep, but the day of the finale we had a school party and every single one of my friends ditched me at the party without explination and I got really really sad. so I walked home slightly drunk and really sad and click on youtube. oh right esc is live. ill watch a little bit to feel better. maybe just catch my favourite songs.

no I got hooked instantly I was up until about 4 in the morning obsessing over it online. im definately going to watch it next year
