Various rakii art styles I've tried dabbling with, a mix of pre and post Student influence. This one is more temperate focused, but I figured after coming into contact with the other species (mainly the jungles), inspiration would strike

Is SpecEvo exclusively sci-fi or can it be a thing in fantasy too?
This is more a poll question for myself being I do what could be close to be calling SpecEvo with plants (Seed World style specifically) in my fantasy world but I don't want to be tagging my stuff as such if specevo is only for sci fi.

Blue cable design. model will have 2 of these guys+the F ports which I'm still working on.
Yeah I took heavy inspiration from 15 pin VGA cables. I wanted some cable size variation on the back of the head+umbilical. for all its computer textures Rworld used a ton of textures taken from old computer motherboards and I wanted to roll with that vibe of familiar yet alien.
------
plus all the variation between old computer cables is neat. I do like everything going to HDMI, USB, and Type-C for sheer usability but I feel like we lost metaphorical computer genetic diversity or something. idk.

NEW ALIEN AGAIN! This one I wanted to stick to being more Earth inspired, connecting with my roots. I'm calling 'em Styraphants cause they're mostly a mix of styracosaurus, elephant, and mollusk of course. Trying to make a quad walking sophont always lends to kind of a centaur-ish body plan, so tried to think outside the box for appendages this go around. They've got a pair of trunk tentacles around their mouth that they use as their hands, which have a fleshy 'zipper' to slot together at rest. They also smell/taste with them so gloves are a very popular purchase.
Tumblr media
Oh also! Their eyes are on little stalks that peak out around their frill, they can hide them away if scared. Also all the fellas pictured here are gals! They have a male/female system in keeping with the Earthling megafauna theme.

I call them Ocira. They're a sort of combination of seals and octopus. They're pseudo-eusocial and very kind
That wrinkly thing on their chest are their gills, which they can use to express certain emotions.
Their "teeth" are truly spines that can be raised to eat meat, or flattened to chomp plants.
To communicate, they do a sort of drumming and pinching of their swim bladders for different tones and squeaks.
They live on an ocean planet, in shallow, warm waters around reefs.
I might draw them more and tell more about them 😸
*update! This post has been edited and is a bit outdated. See the most recent posts about the ocira sophont for better information 😸

i have been watching
Fugget About It
i have to grit my teeth a lot and remind myself it was the early 2010s when these episodes were written ((aside from the fact that it has probably the nicest trans episode from any cartoon around 2012-2014 we stan sally monero round these here parts))
and the art style makes my eyes go to hell <3 but other than that it's REALLY funny and i am obsessed with all the queer undertones petey's got going on

Two invertebrates from the Geoling homeworld of Anuwaara. More info on these two below the cut.
The first, T'kathucht, are jumping predators that fill a similar niche to some species of frog or toad. They go after flying prey and can launch themselves forwards and backwards up to impressive heights. The species depicted here is native to the Wyu'hlkee grasslands and beaches where it blends in with the red foliage and extremely dark volcanic soil and sands. They're sought after by some bug keepers for their complex patterns, but they have a bad reputation with some who keep dart gardens due to t'kathucht's tendency to hunt and consume the female darts (who are favored by geolings tending the gardens due to their high iridescence and capability for flight). While they have various names in the languages used in the islands, their most common name of t'kathucht comes from "t'kata", a simple toy that would bounce or flip off the ground when one pressed down on and let go of it.
Despite the silly appearance the gliēgl is also a predator. It can be found in slow moving streams and pools of water where it floats and darts around towards other animals, injecting them with a venom that liquefies their insides and then sucking it out with the needle-like mouthpart. They are seen by geolings as a desirable species because they eat common 'pest' species, and are also a nice yellow color. In the tropics of Asagann their presence is believed to bring good harvests, and in the Kaswassan coast and Wyu'hlkee islands they're a symbol of joy and good luck. Familial groups in the South will often keep a gliēgl in a wide shallow dish in the entryway of their home to invite in happiness. "Invitation" bowls which are decorated rain collection dishes are also common sights outside of island homes. These are left out by inhabitants in an effort to attract one of these animals to their settlement. Gliēgl's are also very popular among "stripe-coats" (children) and bug collectors. Kaswassan geolings will wear insulated sleet coats that have been stylized in their image, and in the tropics they're often depicted as charms or floating toys. They are widely beloved and would be considered to be a charismatic animal by the people.

Here’s a small part of a way larger project I’ve been working on (do expect photos of that at some point in the near-ish future).

Despite its name, the owlbear is in fact neither owl nor bear - it is a large species of rodent whose external incisors resemble a curved "beak." The enamel of these incisors is colored brown because of iron compounds. This hard substance wears down at a slower rate than the regular tooth, thus producing a sharp edge at the tooth tip.
It is thought that owlbears are evolved from smaller burrowing rodents who made use of their external teeth as digging implements. Their ancestors lacked external pinnae, but the modern owlbear's fur grows in an owl-like facial disk to direct sound -- a case of convergent evolution.
Or, what if dnd owlbears were just big mole rats.
