Why do you like jesters so much?

the short answer is that im silly

the long answer primarily comes down to my fascination with what how they can be used as a narrative tool. though a jester is a job of entertainment, its existence symbolizes how art, theatre, comedy, poetry, and physicality are capable of great political influence. the general throughline of "funny guy makes biggest change" is an intriguing narrative that can be applied to just about every time period and setting in history, and i have SO many stories i'd like to tell centering around various fools.

i'm not trying to write an essay here because im honestly kind of low on time at the moment of writing this but i could talk for hours about how fascinating i think the history of Jesterism is. it's just really interesting to me how the point of a jester is to literally make a fool of themself (and of others) but it takes incredible wit and talent to be successful and looking stupid.

if i had more time, i'd go into these topics:

the "Wise Fool" archetype and how shakespeare utilizes fools

the various clowns of commedia dell'arte

beatrice k. otto's book "fools are everywhere"

jesters historical presence in political protest / control

the power of anonymity and the perception of art vs artist

jesters vs clowns compare and contrast, and why i'm often (but not always lol) pretty careful about keeping "clowncore" elements out of my jester designs (i LOVE clowns i just use them as a different thematic symbol than jesters so the distinction between them is important for me to define in my head.........but i still like to mash them together sometimes)

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

This is kinda cheating because I know why people like the characterization, but I hate hate HATE when people write Isshin as a bad father who Ichigo hates being around. I am an absolute sucker for mediocre/outright failfather Isshin angst, but 1) Isshin is literally not that bad a father, especially considering how few tools he's working with, and 2) he KNOWS he fell short in a lot of places while raising Ichigo and is implied to feel terrible about it. And Ichigo doesn't hate Isshin! Despite the slapstick-heavy relationship they have, he loves his dad and there's no textual evidence that his negative feelings about Isshin are anything more than general annoyance. I get why people misunderstand the relationship as abusive/toxic but like - that's what it is. A misunderstanding.

17. there should be more of this type of fic/art

More fics that focus on the juxtaposition between Soul Society and the living world! For a series that's basically made up of souls in different afterlives, there isn't much focus on the living/human side of things, so I'm always a little disappointed that fandom didn't pick up the slack. I want to see cool fanarts depicting characters (metaphorically) crossing borders and sitting on one side of the chasm. I want to see fics with Soul Society residents reminiscing about their old lives or mourning the fact that they'll probably never get to see their loved ones again. I want to see Pluses that Ichigo and the gang interact with in their day-to-day lives, and the inevitable bittersweetness of performing their duty by helping the spirits move on.

18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...

The living world!!! I know the series itself didn't focus much on it, but again, it's disappointing that the fandom never talks about it either. It's only used as a backdrop where characters can be bored between adventures and occasionally freak out their human friends for comedic purposes. I think there's a lot of interesting stuff you can do with the living world, considering the blurry line separating the living humans from the soul beings in the afterlife(s). What about the fact that the majority of soul beings seem to start out in the living world before dying and becoming souls? What about the fact that Hollows and Shinigami, polar opposites and natural enemies, both possess memories of their human lives before they died? What about the fact that Uryu and his family are living Quincies while all the Wandenreich characters are implied to be souls of the dead? Idk I think I'd have to make a whole separate post about it to really explain what I mean, but it's not just "the place where Ichigo waits for the next adventure." There's a lot you could do with it!!

Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living

Devotional Scripture:

Proverbs 6:12-15(KJV): 12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth. 13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers; 14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. 15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. Proverbs 6:12-15(Amplified): 12 A worthless person, a wicked man is he who goes about with a perverse (contrary, wayward) mouth. 13 He winks with his eyes, he speaks by shuffling or tapping his feet, he makes signs (to mislead and deceive)and teaches with his fingers. 14 Willful and contrary in his heart, he devises trouble, vexation, and evil continually; he lets loose discord and sows it. 15 Therefore upon him shall the crushing weight of calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken and that without remedy.

Thought for the Day

Verse 12 - Today's verses characterize the charlatan. A "perverse mouth" belongs to a "slick talker." Many slick talkers lie convincingly to cheat others out of their money through scams and dishonest operations. Many evil people prey on Christians because they are good-hearted. I have even heard wicked men say that Christians are gullible and believe anything. We should ask the Lord to help us discern when someone is trying to cheat us so that we will not be taken advantage of. We should not allow ourselves to be pressured into giving or buying something without first asking the Holy Spirit to guide us.

The Bible warns of charlatans; false prophets that pretend to be Christians. Just because one comes in Jesus' name does not guarantee that he is truly His. "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits, ye shall know them" (Matthew 7:15-20). The Lord instructs us to examine someone's fruit to discern who he is serving. Some good questions are: Would Jesus act this way? Would He do this? If he does not behave in a godly manner, he is, at best, not walking in the Spirit; at worst, he is an emissary of the devil.

Verse 13 - A charlatan might use a lot of body language to express himself. He will often work with partners whom he signals by certain actions to cheat people. This is seen many times in gambling halls and casinos. Christians should not go to these places unless called there by God to share the Gospel. Gambling is a sin that can lead to an addiction that brings much loss and destruction. The Bible tells us we are to live by faith, not by chance or luck.

Verses 14-15 - Wicked men sow discord and mischief among their acquaintances. They will, in the end, be overtaken and broken by calamity. Calamity will come suddenly and unexpectedly; there will be no way out of it or any remedy for it. We must ask the Lord to keep us from getting involved with people of this sort, and from falling into gambling or any other trap that would allow the enemy to rob us. Do you know of anyone like this?

Prayer Devotional for the Day

Dear heavenly Father, we thank you today for keeping us from evil people who would be set on destroying us or our families. Lord, we need Your discernment to help us to know when we should give, and when we should not give to people. We want to be generous, but we do not want the enemy fooling us and causing us to waste our money on the wrong things. Lead us by Your Spirit to know the things we should do, and the things we should not do. Lord, we pray today for our Christian brothers and sisters who are addicted to gambling. Help them to get free and deliver them from all forms of gambling. Lord, show them that Lotto, bitcoin, stocks, etc. are not the answer to their financial problems. Teach them how to manage their monetary affairs according to the Word of God. When we do that, we are promised a blessing from You. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen. From: Steven P.
