doing research on power rangers to see if theres any series that catch my interest other than the ones I watched as a kid and I have a lot of thoughts from just reading the plot synopsis

You Honest Opinion: Power Ranger Seasons that were AWESOME, were bland as oatmeal, and deserve to be run through the wood chipper from Fargo. Speak and be recognized.

Awesome Seasons

-Jungle Fury: Overall solid season, great characters and development, awesome choreography and villains. Only thing that could’ve been better was if the show was given more episodes. A side effect of ranger seasons as they probes on was the reduce in episode amounts, Jungle Fury could’ve definitely benefited from having at least 10 or 12 more episode…AND THE CROSSOVERS OF OO AND RPM.

-Dino Thunder: See this is how you do a season where you incorporate the core theme of the 90s classic trope with high schoolers/heroes, cast is likable, show flowed well along with the story and villain and Trent was adorable(actor still hot…don’t judge me). My gripes is Zeltrax not getting an actual ending, or PR not giving Ethan’s actor a chance to come back even though he definitely wants to.

-Lost Galaxy: Breath of fresh air into the new era after Zordon, cool concept and I love that cast as well. We all need a boyfriend like Leo, also the idea of what they did for Kendrix was both bold and entertaining when watching for the first time…only thing that could’ve gone better was them being able to do the lost galaxy arc a bit earlier to actually show off more ideas there.

Bland as Oatmeal(spicing this up, category for seasons I enjoy but their issues need to be addressed to gain peace for the better)

-SPD: Now this season honestly was ambitious with the ideas of having all these alien designs and being based in the future on earth. Cast is cool and so far I’m pretty much enjoying it…I do however don’t appreciate the focus being mainly on Jack, Sky and Cruger, they are nice characters but the others get thrown in the dark. Not to mention Sky in the beginning being an asshole about not getting red (also for you to be raised by a single mom yet get offended at the idea of a woman being a leader is clown behavior, glad he grew out of that shit fast). Syd and Z’s treatment was pretty poor, we should’ve had Taylor and Jen complaining to SPD and making shit right for them👌🏾🩷💛

-Time Force: This was an interesting season but I have some overall issues with the way half of the team was handled. For a season based on time travels they didn’t really utilize that much and outside of Wes, Jen and Eric the other three barely got anything, I would’ve loved to see perspectives of Katie, Xybrian lore on Trip(have a few posts of that I made if you wanna give it a look👀💚) and…Lucas I guess, but tbh Nadira should be the blue Ranger from now on after…certain things about his actor(if you know you know) but yea overall season could’ve had more of that stuff.

Wood Chipper

-Ninja Steel: Dogshit season, outside of the many things I don’t like about this season I will say some things to say with from the little grace it has. I love the idea of Madame Odios being the antagonist as one I love fox themed characters and also her design is peak, the suits for the rangers are pretty stylish and the effects or their attacks are rather stunning when used well….now onto where we dive into the deep end. Victor and Monty need to not exist, no no that’s rude, they needed better writing. For one the fart jokes were disgusting and whoever thought that was funny in the writing room is just ugh, you could’ve made them actually engaging characters, heck paired them together as boyfriends like ANYTHING INTERESTING. Now onto Hayley, the way Calvin handled their relationship was so terrible and Sarah is a bad friend for telling Hayley to just deal with it, and had HER apologizing for Calvin being terrible??? Also the idea they originally had for the black girl to lose her boyfriend so he can hook up with the other girl on the team…oh my god I’m glad the actresses said no to that, goddamit what was this writing.

YOU HAD A NINJA SEASON THAT SAID OTHER SCHOOLS EXISTED, LORE BUILT UP BUT NO REFERENCE THERE???? Oh my god, I’m just imagining how good of a season it could’ve been incorporating ninja Storm and samurai together cause like just picture how fire it would’ve been(luckily I’m going to make a Ninja Steel AU rewrite eventually in ao3 if anyone wants to read it👌🏾. Also allow me to use the green ranger we never got form the Sentai 👀)

Let’s leave it at the fact that fans can take the characters and show and make better backgrounds and settings for them, anytime canon fails we have everyone here to do the good work👍🏾

Two sides of my brain are duking it out over this, because I am a contrary little thing that can never stick to one favorite for very long.

HOWEVER, I can absolutely post recommendations for the long haul.

My standing favorites from the live action series over the last 30 years are very rarely Rangers proper. I have affection pointed towards their aids and comedy holders more often than not.

In MMPR it was Bulk and Skull, but I had affection in spades for Billy. In Turbo and In Space, I still prefer the duo, but T.J., Zhane, and the Psycho Rangers all hold my interest for prolonged periods due to giving off bi, gay, and monster vibes. Interestingly, Lost Galaxy provided a lot of references to the human form, given how many times Leo ripped off his shirt. I still liked Kai more, but I think that was just because Archie Kao is a better actor.

Lightspeed Rescue was a fun time to exhaust yourself with conventionally attractive people that were largely bland as paint; though Kelsey did awaken a lot of sapphics.

If you watch Time Force, do it for no other reason than to watch Eric pine for Wes from a distance while Wes throws puppy eyes at Jen the entire time--and Wes and Eric still basically end up together.

Wild Force is for the Jindrax/Toxica, Danny/Max, and laughing as hard as you can watching the writers push SO HARD for the Princess Shayla and Merrick, only for her to fuck off back into sleep and Merrick ending up with a wolf furry he was stuck inside for the better part of a century.

Ninja Storm is...a sausage fest, but I stood firm and pleased with every interaction between Marah and Kapri with literally everyone else. Also Cam is basically perfect for his role.

Dino Thunder was is...interesting. I think my favorite Ranger is temporarily evil Trent, but only because it's fun to watch him suffer. Also Devin and Cassidy and the writers TEASING ABOUT THEM for half the season.

I think we can all agree that SPD really hasn't aged well, but that's okay, because I still really like Piggy and Kat; the borderline mafia adjacent and the team mom.

Mystic Force is interesting in so many different ways, as mentioned above about Nick, but also because the adult mentors here weren't entirely worthless. Udonna was very much doing her best with what she had, Daggeron was a little off putting, but a good teacher; Koragg was fucking awesome as an antagonist--but again, my favorites are the non-rangers in Clare, Leelee, and Phineas.

I still don't like Overdrive. I put in the discs to play them and the theme song turns on and everything after that irritates me. But Spencer and Rose are nice.

Jungle Fury might have the most well balanced team, which is why I actually liked the Red Ranger Casey Rhodes. But Fran has all of my heart; especially since she's left holding the bag SO MUCH. Also Camille and Jarrod *kisses them on their dumb little heads*

RPM is not a competition, because everyone here (that isn't Colonel Truman) has a reason for being what they are and doing what they do and growing from that. And because I am a basic bitch, Dillon and Ziggy are my favorites.

Samurai had...complicated bullshit. Like, do I really have to bring this up? They gave a purely Japanese history to a pair of blond, blue eyed, white teens, the only Asian on the team was the Pink Ranger and had a running gag of being a terrible cook, the Yellow Ranger was picked on for being a girl WAY too much, the Green Ranger is the culmination of obnoxious stereotypes reaching backwards from previous Green Rangers, the Blue Ranger's only endearing quality is probably being very gay underneath the obvious trauma of growing up in one of the most controlling environments that espouses loyalty as obedience... But Antonio is fine. We LIKE Antonio. (And Spike~)

Dino Charge has Shelby and Kendall, Ivan and Koda, Tyler and Riley and Chase. This was basically a perfect season.

Ninja Steel was so boring. It had potential, but they NEVER got into the human trafficking, the slavery, the childhood trauma, or veered away from the fart jokes with Victor and Monty. But Hayley is gorgeous?

Beast Morpers had Devon Daniels 💖💖 and Betty and Ben Burke. Also the Blaze and Roxy avatars look good in leather.

Dino Fury/Cosmic Fury. Go in for the Javelia and Ollaiyon, stay for the Fizzy. Ignore canon, but relax when Ollie goes evil and Fern is assigned as first canon live action Orange.

And if you don't want any of that: READ THE COMICS!!! Read Go Go Power Rangers, read Shattered Grid, read the Annuals, read Beyond the Grid, read Necessary Evil, read Return of the Ranger Slayer, read the Eltarian War!!! Do it for the ACTUAL character development, the art, the writing, the new characters, the lore, the branching of timelines and alternative history!! Everyone is a winner at least ONCE.

hi there! thank you so much! hope you don’t mind if i publish this but i’ve gotten a lot of new followers lately so i think this might be helpful to more people :)

my friend @erniesbrainfreeze​ has actually written a wonderful spoiler-free guide to all the seasons of power rangers (i helped a little) right here: beginner’s guide to pr! it goes through the premise for each season, highlights, pros, and cons, it’s very well thought-out.

aside from that here are my personal jumping off points to get people into power rangers:

power rangers rpm (2009): post-apocalyptic, standalone, 32 episodes, widely hailed as one of the best-written, best-acted seasons. opinions may vary but it’s super interesting.

power rangers ninja storm (2003): california extreme sports meets secret ninja academies, standalone, 38 episodes, features evil rangers and imo one of the best sixth ranger reveals

power rangers spd (2005): space cops at a police academy in the near future (takes place in 2025), standalone, 38 episodes, features a really unique premise and time-travel

power rangers jungle fury (2008): kung fu students working at a pizza parlor, standalone, 32 episodes, very self-contained, small cast, super cute and just a solid season to start with

a few things to remember: just because mighty morphin’ is the most well-remembered does not mean it’s the best place to start. it has almost 200 episodes over 3 seasons, most of them are filler, and honestly... it’s not as good as some later seasons. i wouldn’t recommend starting with zordon era (mmpr-space) unless you REALLY liked it from your childhood because those seasons were all connected and it’s a lot to watch all at once. the standalone seasons imo provide a better, easier grasp of what power rangers is about, and then, depending on which ones you liked, you can move onto seasons with similar themes (for example, if you liked ninja storm, you’ll probably like dino thunder next because it was written by the same people; if you liked rpm i would go back to lost galaxy or lightspeed rescue for more of the same tone)

also power rangers dino thunder (2004) is a standalone season but it features tommy oliver (from mmpr) as the mentor (but don’t worry, you don’t need to know anything about mmpr to watch it), and it also has a really nice episode called legacy of power which summarizes all of the past seasons of power rangers, so i would check that out and see which ones catch your interest!

finally, i would suggest watching power rangers ninja steel because it’s the currently airing season and it only has eight episodes so far and it’s super cute! and you don’t need to know anything about past seasons to watch it and it has a built-in fandom of active bloggers right here on tumblr :) it’s gonna be on hiatus till probably august so you have time to catch up~
