Something that always annoys me is the idea only 1 language learning method works. Which is not true. While it may be possible that, for a particular individual, only a few out of many study methods may work well enough for That Individual to make progress and stay motivated... that doesn't mean all the other study methods won't work for anyone else out there, or that those few methods will work for every other given person.
Obviously if you've been studying a while, then you already figured out what kinds of things work for you and don't. If you're a beginner, just wading into studying?
I would suggest you simply look for study methods that: 1. Teach you new things regularly, 2. Review and practice things you've learned, 3. Include studying things you need for your particular goals (for example if your goal is to read X book then the study materials at some point should involve reading practice and some words the book contains, if your goal is to talk about Y then the study materials should include some information about pronunciation and words you'll need to be able to say).
As you can imagine, a TON of study materials will meet these requirements. And you can study a given skill in a LOT of ways.
(Reading is my focus lol so just for reading, a beginner might: do vocabulary study with lists or conversations with native speakers or watching shows and looking words up or listening to dialogues with a transcript like in a textbook or graded readers or a picture book with word labels in the target language or a video game with labelled objects in target language, all of those things as long as your vocabulary is improving or reading practice is happening would help you make progress). So to improve reading skill as a beginner: you could study with a textbook, a podcast with transcript, a classroom or tutor with words written down in target language (like TPRS), a video game, a TV show and a translate app on your phone, a friend you talk with (who either writes words down or you look up words you hear with a translate app), a friend you text with, srs flashcards like anki (provided there's text) etc. As long as there's new words, and/or you're practicing reading, the study method may work. If it works will come down to if you can stay motivated doing it regularly, and make sure you regularly learn some new things and review/practice things you've already studied.
So consider those things when you see people selling a study method as a product (especially when it's costing you money). Consider if it teaches you NEW things, and are those new things related to your goals, and how MUCH new stuff will it teach you before you finish it? Consider if it provides review or practice, or if you can use it's materials to review on your own making up your own method, or if you'll need to do separate review/practice.
So examples:
LingQ. Can it teach you many new words? Yes, thousands, since you can import any texts you want when you get done with their provided material (I have no idea how much their beginner material covers though in terms of words... I would hope 1000-3000 words but that can be researched). Is your goal reading? It's suited to reading, so you will practice and review often with it. Cost? I think it was $12 a month when I last had it, and the price may have increased. Is it worth it? Depends on a learner's needs. I found it was wasting my money, so I chose to use free tools like Pleco and Readibu apps - since those apps are suited for Chinese learners and have better translations, Pleco has better paid graded reader material if I was going to spend money, and both Pleco and Readibu let me import texts so I can learn thousands of new words just like LingQ but free. Now that I'm not a beginner, I often use Microsoft Edge to read chinese... since I can still click-translate words easily (all my web browsers have that tool free), and Edge's TTS voice is helpful for pronunciation and sounds quite good. I read webnovels online so Edge works well. But it's translations aren't as good as Pleco or Readibu, so if I still needed translations more I would use them. So... is LingQ a good study method? Its certainly a study method marketed to buy. Well... the method is suited to improving reading skill, at least. It costs money, which is a negative, but it does offer a lot. However: everything it does regarding reading can be done free with other apps or sites or web browsers on their own. So if paying money motivates you to read... sure. LingQ does have a few word tracking features a learner may find worth the money, keeping in mind the actual read-to-learn method can be done free without lingq. (Also... while LingQ is a valid option for improving reading, if the learners goal is speaking then it would be important to think of what study activities the learner will do OUTSIDE of LingQ to improve speaking... because I've seen how LingQ is marketed as "how to learn a language" but it's only focused on some skills. It has vocabulary and grammar in some sense, since you'll read a lot and encounter new words and structures. But it doesnt have speaking or writing practice at least last time I was on it. Those activities would need to be worked on, on your own).
You can do that kind of cost/benefit contemplating with any study method material you see being sold. Amother example: there's a beginner Mandarin course called Mandarin Blueprint. It teaches like 800 words. Thats all. It may be worthwhile for a beginner... who still needs to learn 800 common words. But if you already know a few hundred words, the benefit of the course is less, you'll need to find a new material to teach you more new stuff soon. And the price was like a few hundred for the course... which for me personally was too much to spend, when I had already learned 800 hanzi from a book that cost me 12 dollars and 2000 words from a free user made memrise deck. The course claimed to get a person speaking, competent, but anyone not a beginner would say speaking basically with 800 words is nowhere near the level of working in Chinese or just doing a lot of daily life stuff, or reading/listening to media. (Although for the motivated beginner if you're learning 800 words on your own like I was, its definitely close to the point of jumping to learn more words and start reading kids and teenager books, and watching easier shows if you're willing to look new words up). So to me... Mandarin Blueprint felt like overselling some basic beginner materials. (Again when I know several other things that teach beginner stuff either more in depth so HSK test prep classes, and college courses, or that teach beginner stuff to the same depth as Mandarin Blueprint but free).
Some study materials aren't going to act like they teach everything. I've seen chinese courses just for learning to speak tones better and general pronunciation - probably worthwhile if your goal is to improve speaking and a teacher could help improve the issues your having. But a learner needs to be aware for that course that they'll need to study vocabulary on their own, its JUST a pronunciation improvement course.
#rant#i saw a lot of comments on forums yesterday thinking automatic language growth alg was like snake oil#aka a scam. but it can be done for free (free lessons online) and for people who#learn well from visual context and guessing (i learn well that way) the lesson style DOES result in learning new words and grammar#so provided you can find ALG type free lessons that teach 1000+ words (ideally 3000+ words) then you will learn#enough grammar and words to then move onto native speaker content to continue studying. so all free#i have not seen yet how ALG helps students with speaking or writing yet though. so i can only say it for sure improves passive skills#specifically listening with new words and grammar. and listening translates to reading if you practice that on your own#even just with subtitles or podcast transcripts.#the issue for me is can i find alg courses that teach a thousand words in a timely manner (and free if thats my personal requirement)#i think Dreaming Spanish and Comprehensible Thai do have enough free courses to teach 1000+ words#so those ones would get you to possibly intermediate b1 level in passive listening skill#and then its up to you on if 1 that meets your goal 2 you learn well with that lesson type 3 you are motivated to do the lessons#like... duolingo itself is not completely useless... it teaches 3000 words on most courses (and maybe 1500 common words). the big issue for#me with duolingo is it takes me AGES to complete a lesson and complete a course (years). cause i cant focus on it#whereas with duolingos content... its beginner content. at best it will get Reading skill to A2 or low B1#and maybe other skills if you practice OUTSIDE duolingo with the words and grammar u learned.#so getting to A2 vocab shouldnt take me more than a year to learn (based on how i study). i can learn it in 6 months if i#just study a wordlist on paper and a grammar guide online. so since duolingo takes me 4 times LONGER to study than the other methods i use?#duolingo is a waste of my time. not worth it (and it markets itself as if it will get a learner to B2 when it wont. and it markets#as if 1 lesson a day is all you need. to make progress in 6 months in duolingo like my wordlist study...#you'd need to be doing duolingo 1-3 hours a day... which duolingo does not tell u to do. and most learners dont

talking about naughty word censorship, theres this game, DJMAX, which i played a lot. it has a small chat where you and friends could decide on songs to play
and ofc as its a chat it has a banned wordlist and banned word combinations
one of them was -ngr-
thus, banning the word "Ingredients" and its spanish ver, "Ingredientes"
ofc that only made my friends and I try to find more of those banned words lmao

9/100 days of productivity (March 20 2019)
Today I: - Handed in an assignment for Spanish - Completed my summary of a case of the ECHR - I voted :D - I finished my Spanish homework and set up a wordlist - I did my laundry - I wrote a review for Wildcat by JP Harker - I read two chapters of La Tinieblas de Salamanca - I sent a letter to my penpal - I sent out three emails to possible work placement locations - Went over some theory for my resits - Took a walk whilst listening to an audiobook to clear my head and relax - I uploaded the reading vlog I edited yesterday
I am shaking from emailing those three work placement locations. I’ve sent emails to three bookstores and I’m actually really hoping one of them has a spot for me because I really want to spend my work placement at a bookstore.
Also, I managed to write a spoiler-free review for Wildcat. At least, it’s spoiler free up to a point where I don’t give away too much. I hope to film it either tomorrow or Friday so that I can upload it on Wednesday.
Soundtrack of the day: Día de los Muertos Suite - Michael Giacchino

Be delighted with free items and giveaways for your games and challenge yourself by accumulating points that can be cashed in for epic rewards. This application supports English.
New Features Include:
Gis For Mac
Support for Mac & Windows
New target curve adjustment options, including deep bass and high frequencies
Save, stop, start, resume measurements, and remeasure individual speakers
Improved user interface
Improved algorithms
Set unique maximum correction frequencies for each set of speakers
Automatic speaker/subwoofer phase alignment for Anthem STR Series products
How does ARC work?
An audio system’s performance is always negatively affected by a room’s unique characteristics. The size and shape of the room, its construction, the furnishings, and other factors cause standing waves, resonances, and reflections that can color the sound played by loudspeakers. Utilizing proprietary algorithms developed by Anthem engineers, ARC Genesis creates custom correction curves that retain the favorable acoustic signature of speakers and remove negative room contributions. These custom filters are then used to program high-quality digital signal processing (DSP) technology embedded within compatible audio products.
Click the button below to download Arq Backup: Download Arq 6 for Windows or Get Arq 6 for Mac; Double-click Arq6.msi in your Downloads folder to install Arq. When Arq launches, enter your email address and click Start Trial (or click Enter License Code if you already have a license code). Click 'Create a new backup plan'.
Advanced REST Client comes with 3 preinstalled themes: light, dark and Anypoint. Thanks to open standards and ARC's open architecure you can create your own theme and distribute it within your organization.

ARC Genesis Key Features
Demo Mode: Experience the software first hand. Demo mode offers access to the full suite of tools without having an Anthem, MartinLogan, or Paradigm compatible product connected.
Tumblr media
Assign Amp Channels: For products such as Anthem’s MRX audio/video receivers and AVM home theater processors, ARC Genesis allows you to configure the assignable amp channels from within the software, making quick work of setting up your receiver for zone 2 or height effects channels.
Set Up Bass Management: For products such as Anthem’s MRX audio/video receivers, AVM home theater processors, and STR preamplifier and integrated amplifiers, ARC Genesis not only optimizes the performance of your system, it also lets you set up bass management from within the software. To redirect bass to a subwoofer (below a speaker’s Crossover frequency), set the Send Bass to Subwoofer (or Low-Frequency Extension Slope) control to “Send bass to the sub.”
Customize Target Curves: With ARC Genesis’ Professional Mode, the target curves for the system as a whole, are adjustable using room gain, deep bass boost, and tilt controls. Individual sets of speakers allow for the adjustment of high-frequency roll-off and crossover frequencies and slopes. Subwoofers allow for the adjustment of high-frequency extension, low-frequency extension, and low-frequency extension slope.
20 Hz to 20,000 Hz Full-Range Room Correction for Each Set of Speakers: For products such as Anthem’s MRX audio/video receivers, AVM home theater processors, and STR preamplifier and integrated amplifiers, ARC Genesis allows you to set a different maximum correction frequency for each set of speakers, up to 20,000 Hz. For example, you may want to use room correction on your dipole electrostatic front speakers up to 400 Hz and your small in-ceiling height effect speakers up to ARC’s default of 5,000 Hz.
Multiple Measurements: Some devices allow you to create multiple measurement sets (up to four, depending on the device). We recommend more than one if some significant transformation predictably takes place within the room that can alter the room’s acoustic response. For example, take one set of measurements with a drop-down video screen deployed and another with the screen hidden, drapes up or down, doors open or closed, and so on.
Multiple Profiles: Alone in the dark mac download. Some devices allow you to create multiple system profiles (up to four, depending on the device). For example, one profile can optimize your system as a multi-channel home theater with sub and another as a 2-channel music system without a sub. Can't transfer photos from iPhone to … - Apple Community.
Remeasure: If you’ve spent time working with ARC to dial in the performance of your system and later decide to upgrade your center channel or another speaker, ARC Genesis allows you to open a saved configuration file, remeasure only your new speaker, and update your target curves without needing to start over from scratch.
Pan and Zoom: ARC Genesis allows you to examine graphs in great detail. To zoom on a computer, place your cursor over the graph and spin your mouse wheel or choose Zoom In or Zoom Out. To pan on a computer, left-click on a graph and drag it to change position. On a touch screen enabled device, you press the Zoom In or Zoom Out controls or press and drag to pan.
Multiple Languages: Support for several languages is available under ARC > Preferences > Languages. To switch to a different language, select your preferred language from the Preferences panel, close the application, and restart it. At the time of launch, ARC supports Chinese, English, French, German, and Spanish.
Free Download Arcgis 9.3 Software
Quick Measure and Snapshots: Quick Measure allows you to experiment with speaker and subwoofer positioning and settings outside of ARC while monitoring the resulting acoustic response in real time. The snapshot feature allows you to freeze a curve to compare against subsequent changes that affect the acoustic response.

hey!! first of all i want to say that your blog is so beautiful!!! ...well now i have some questions that i think u could help me with..... the thing is that me and my sister, we both want to study and live in china, we recently started Chinese clases and we are both fluent in English (spanish is our mother tounge) the thing is that shes 15 and im 19, so we are not very sure if its possible? can u help us telling me your story?? thank u so much!!! 💕
Tumblr media
Thank-you so much for the compliment, so nice to hear that you like my blog!  🙈 ❤️
I totally believe you and your sister could apply to study abroad at a university in China! People can apply until age 30 for the scholarship I applied for, but I think your sister might have to wait a couple years till she can start (at least graduating from high school; my friend came to China on this scholarship when she was 17) applying for the scholarship!
I made a post about what my scholarship exactly entails and included the link you need to start applying for the scholarship on there, so please feel free to check it out after too!
My Story (Extended Edition):
I applied when I was 19, and waiting for the results was so hard! They sent the news late into the summer, maybe late July(?), so until then I had no idea what I would be doing in the fall. It was a bit scary when I found out, almost bittersweet! I knew I would be delving into a completely new world and culture, and leaving my friends and family behind for a little while. But the good far outweighed the scariness of the new experience for me, so before long I was studying at Nanjing Normal University to ensure that my Chinese skill level could get me through a whole degree!  My post about my scholarship and how I went about applying for it! - here
That first year of language training was also covered by my scholarship, and while I wouldn’t be staying in Nanjing for my degree, I loved that city very much. NNU’s campus used to be a garden of a very rich man, and there were beautiful ponds and trees all around campus, with the ‘traditional’ Chinese architecture I had come to imagine would only remain at places like the Imperial Palace. Around the school was so convenient as well, life in general in China can be so much more convenient than life back home. That first year they gave us oral Chinese, grammar and vocabulary class, as well as a listening class. As was required by my scholarship, I had to pass HSK 4 that year, or pay for an additional year of Chinese language learning. I ended up taking, and passing, HSK 5 in March of that year, so I had a couple months to spare, and a great mark in a test of a higher level. End of the year came, and I sent all of my things via delivery to someone I knew in the city where I currently live and went home to Canada for the summer.
A new year, a new University, a new city, a new everything. So then came the time when I had to actually begin studying for my major. This was even scarier than my first year was because my classes would be with Chinese students and no other foreigners. Some of my classmates from Nanjing got to stay in foreigner-only courses their first year as a sort of transition year, but not me! I was so worried my Chinese wasn’t going to be good enough, and to be honest, sometimes even now my Chinese isn’t good enough and this is my 3rd year in China. But you start to pick up on the language so quickly, and you learn what you need to get through every day. Guess what! I passed all of my courses, and even got top marks in a couple of my classes!
Year two has seen nothing new. In my university, students are together for all 4 years, so I have all the same classmates which is nice because I’m pretty self-conscious about my Chinese haha; I’ve settled in with a classmate named Yingjie, he and I are good friends and we sit together nearly every day. Sometimes people outside of my class stare and point at me, I’ve had people on campus take pictures of me without asking, but you learn to deal with it, sometimes it’s flattering and sometimes it just seems rude.
Overall, despite the overwhelming homesickness I sometimes feel for my old life, I’m glad I’ve come here, and typing out this for you has made me realize how grateful I am for the opportunity of studying abroad in China. So thank-you, Anon. ❤️

11/100 days of productivity (March 25 2019)
You might’ve noticed that there are a couple days between day 10 and day 11.... I took a little break over the weekend to see my family and relax a little overall.
Today I: - Went back to Maastricht because the train I took to travel back yesterday hit a car and we were evacuated. - I went to English class - Submitted my summary of the ECHR for English - Updated my wordlist - Put away all the stuff I brought home - Bought myself breakfast for tomorrow - Studied for a small Spanish quiz - Made a big part of my English homework - Changed my bedding - Did a facemask (yes I’m counting that as productive)
Honestly can’t wait for the weekend already. Exams are fast approaching and I’m spending most of my time studying.
