How The Mighty Fall In Love.

Anon asked: I was wondering if you could help me with something about my character. She is very powerful and loves her powers so much. But at the end she falls in love with a mortal and I had people suggesting it would be good if she gave up her powers to be with him but I think it's out of character... What do you think?

You have to do what you feel is best for you story. It sounds like giving up her powers would be a good point of character development, which is probably why people are suggesting it. Forcing her to choose between keeping her powers or being with this mortal (via the plot, not through the mortal giving her an ultimatum) is one possible way she could demonstrate that she loves this mortal more than she loves her powers. But it’s not the only option. 

Maybe...

She doesn’t learn to put aside her power, and ends up sliding into a clear path toward destruction.

She doesn’t learn to put aside her power, and her love is hurt, but chooses to stay with her anyway.

She’s willing to put aside her power for the mortal if she absolutely has to, but she believes that her power is also important (either to her identity or because it allows her to do important things, etc) and she grows as a person by learning that sometimes you have to fight for everything you love, and through this finds a way to keep both her power and the mortal.

Her powers and her love for them is just a seamless part of her that isn’t shown to be good or bad, and her character development involves an entirely different trait.

Leaving love.

Anon asked: Can I ask if you know what conditions people are likely to leave in? I'm writing a mystery sort of novel and after the main issue is resolved, I want one of the two partners to leave (not die) the other. But I need a reason for them to because they're pretty in love with their SO, I feel like it would be too abrupt? I'm thinking corruption from a higher up could be plausible but I'm unsure,,,

Honestly, there are too many conditions to even begin to count. Try brainstorming the reasons you might leave someone you love, reasons people you know have left someone, reasons your favorite fictional characters have left someone, etc, and once you have a nice long list, see how you can alter each of those reasons to fit with your mystery novel’s plot and characters.

You can make anything plausible if you weave it into the plot well enough. Give signs early on the The Reason might be an issue, or that one of the characters is secretly struggling with it.

Writing Characters with Trust issues.

Anon asked: hi, i love your blog! not sure if you have answered this already, but if you have time i was wondering if you have any tips towards writing a character with severe trust issues? i want them to have a backstory that makes sense (why they have trust issues to begin with/what caused it) but i'm worried i'll make it too cliche or over-the-top. any thoughts or suggestions? i understand if youre busy! have a nice day

In my personal opinion, a character shouldn’t have to have some tragic explanation for their problems. Real people often have things like trust issues simply because their trust was betrayed in little ways over a long period of time, or because they never learned to work through the issue the first time it happened and have created for themselves a self-fulfilling prophecy.

However, many readers are accustomed to having negative emotions and traits supported by some incredibly tragic piece of backstory, so without it, it might be a bit harder to convince everyone your character’s trust issues are warranted. 

Try to show these trust issues front and center in the character’s life. What emotions does it bring up? How does it effect little, everyday choices? What does the character think about their own trust issues; (do they realize they have them, or do they justify them, or are they oblivious?)

Don’t rely on internal monologue (“wahhh everyone betrays me”) if you can demonstrate it through unreliable narration (��I can’t meet with Pam for lunch, she’s just trying to sell me her art”) or action (over-reminding the barista that it’s the blueberry scone because they were given a lemon one once three years ago and don’t trust this coffee shop anymore.)

I've been working with someone as their beta, and while they've requested that I help them with their blind spots, I've been having difficulty explaining to them not only what their blind spots are but also how to develop them into strengths - they flatly don't believe they're actually as inexperienced as they are in those given areas. Do you have any ideas on how to explain things, please? I don't feel like I'm doing a very good job as a beta.

If you haven’t already, you should check out this post on giving good critique! Some other things to keep in mind:

Some writers don’t actually want to face their flaws (even if they say they do.) There’s nothing we can do about that, and in those cases sometimes it’s just best to quietly step away.

Many writers need time to process through the fact that the thing they thought they’d done well is actually not great after all. (I can’t count how many times I’ve wanted to snap at someone for daring to point out something that obviously wasn’t an issue in my writing, only to come back a few hours or days later and realize what they said was right, and I can see the signs of it clear as day.)

Sometimes writers who are very far beneath your skill level in a certain area need to be giving simpler things to fix. Make sure the things you point out are manageable for their skill level in that area. Even if they can’t see the whole picture of how much they have to grow, small movement in the right direction will get them closer to where they eventually need to be.

AHHH yeah more questions!!! I’m always up for ask memes or any questions. I loved your blog, and I’m happy that you followed me!!

Galra empire (Who is your favorite Galra character?) Oooohhh that’s a tough one. Can I cheat and say Keith? I like Kolivan, he’s pretty cool, but I think I actually like Fanon Kolivan as opposed to canon Kolivan, cause people write awesome fics where he’s protective of the paladins once he realizes how young they are, and just flips on the “Protective Dad” Switch. I REALLY like Thace though, cause he deactivated the barrier so Voltron could escape even though he knew he’d probably get caught for it. And then he went through fudging TORTURE and still went to shut down the ship, and he fought along side Keith, and then he DIED SO THAT KEITH COULD ESCAPE AND VOLTRON COULD DEFEAT THE EMPIRE AND just *sniff sniff* he was such a good character and he’s gone now…    But then there’s the new galra ladies, who seem pretty bada$$ and they’re cool. Zethrid (the big one) is really growing on me, cause she’s just so straight forward about blowing stuff up and taking down the enemy. There’s no secret twisted plans coming from her, which I greatly appreciate. Cause Ezor (the one that can be invisible) is also fairly straight forward, but the fact that she can be invisible and you never know where she’s at is a little suspicious/nerve-raking to me. then there’s Nati/Nadi (idk how you spell it, the blind one with the cat) is just super mysterious and can control people which is cool, but also creepy and evil. And then there’s Acxa (space azula/weblum galra) who I’m pretty sure is a deep uncover spy. So who knows what her motives are.     

But in all honesty pre-evil Zarkon is my favorite, cause he was such a crushing mess over Honerva and gets scared by cats, and willing to risk his life to save his wife, and was a good friend that got Alfor out of messes, and he got baby allura that helmet which is just too cute, and he was all nervous about it too, and just, uggghh pre-evil Zarkon is the best.

Weblum (What is your favorite Voltron episode?) Omg you’re asking all the really hard ones lol!! I really like Space Mall cause it’s just a lot of good fun. Some Assembly Required is also good. I like the beginning of Greening the Cube, cause of the squishy asteroid fight. Blade of Marmora is also amazing because of the way Keith is drawn in that episode (his hair is so beautiful, I cry everytime), and the fact that we see that Keith really wants to be part of a family. Just every episode is amazing and I like parts from each of them.  But from the new season I really like Hole in the Sky, cause Sven and Slav. Just- Sven and Slav were amazing and adorable, and good lord Sven you are not allowed to fudging die jfosiehfljbvjhsoeihf. Also the last episode where we finally learn about the old paladins is great.

Slav (What are your ships? No discourse allowed) OOooh boy. Alright. First of all I’m just going to say that these are my personal preferences for ships, and that this blog does not post any ships as this is a platonic blog (unless it could be viewed as platonic or just really super cute and sweet* *but that’s still rare for me to post a ship), but that it is also does not put down any other ships. :)

Alright!! For me my OTP is Kidge. It could also be just a Brotp and I’d be totally fine with that, but I feel that they would work so well together and it’s just and adorable ship that I love (but they need more on-screen interaction that’s not them just talking through the comms in their lions!) If Klance were to happen in canon I’d be cool with it, but I much more prefer them as BROTP. and fanon klance/hardcore klance shippers get on my nerves sometimes, and make me not like the ship at all. I also really like the irony of plance/pidgance, cause Lance “mister I flirt with pretty much every girl I meet” ending up with the person who he no idea was a girl, is hilarious to me, and I think they also get along very well. When I first joined the fandom and I saw that shallura was a top ship, I thought it was weird, but then it grew on me, and now I love it with all my heart screw all the age discourse. I don’t really like the shaladin ships, but sometimes the art and fics are really cute, so I don’t mind too much. (I see shiro as too much of a brother/father figure to the rest of the paladins for me to properly ship him with any of them) Shidge is my personal Notp, but I know the people who do ship it are respectful with it and do not make it pedophilia (for the large majority, there could be some gross people out there, but I haven’t run across anything so far) and I usually just ignore it if I come across it (cause that’s what ya should do when there is a ship you don’t like!). But mostly everything is space family and brotps between all the paladins. Coran is permanent space uncle. And pre-evil Zarkon and Honerva are adorable.

(if you want to know how I view anyother ship in perticular you can ask or message me, and I’ll tell you what I think about it!! :) cause I’m open to a lot of the ships)

Paladin (When did you start watching Voltron?) I started watching shortly after season 2 came out. Like Jan 22?? or 24th?? Anyway I saw that the How to Train Your Dragon page that I followed on facebook shared a trailer or add promoting season 2, and once I realized that the show was made by Dreamworks, I wanted to watch it, and once I did I became OBSESSED. 

Bonus: when I watched the season 1 finale I was like “thank goodness I didn’t have to wait to see what happened.”  Watching season 2 finale “well what the fudge that’s even worse.” 

Thank goodness this season didn’t have a cliff hanger ending, but still a lot of unanswered questions and weird going ons *side eyes “shiro”*

I've been writing shorter stories for a while now and I plan on stepping up to the challenge and writing something novella to novel length soon enough. As such, I just want to ask you... How much outlining and worldbuilding/character notes do you personally need before the actual writing? Is there any urge to edit your first draft while still writing it down? Do you have some miscellaneous tips? Sorry for these questions, it's just overwhelming to tackle bigger projects right now, so I need help

How much outlining and worldbuilding/character notes do you personally need before the actual writing?

It depends on the story and the writer! I suggest having a basic outline, even if you think you’ll change most of it (and change it you probably will), but unless you have a lot of little complex pieces all working together, it doesn’t matter if your outline still has gaps in it. The point of an outline is to provide a foundation to work with, not a step by step guide.

Personally, I don’t use any worldbuilding or character notes. I do suggest paying attention to the areas your characters need to develop in so you can outline the character arcs ahead of time, or at least track them as you go. 

If you choose to bypass outlines and notes, it’s always a good idea to write them as you go, because it’ll save a lot of headache during the editing stages. (I still forget to do this with my characters. I’m thankful for all my beta readers who’ve been paying more attention than I am, and have pointed out inconsistencies in character’s favorite foods and wardrobe colors and things x_x)

Is there any urge to edit your first draft while still writing it down? 

A lot of writers, especially writers who are just starting on longer works, do get this urge. (I did too, during the original version of Iron From Fire; which is why it stayed “the original version” and after four years of rewriting the first 60k words five separate times, I scrapped the entire thing and decided to write the full rough draft without rereading more than one paragraph every time I wrote. After that, I finished it in three months.)

If you feel like you want to edit, don’t. Train yourself with better, time saving habits upfront, and then you can be more lax for later books after you know you can actually finish long projects in the first place.

Do you have some miscellaneous tips?

Don’t worry too much during the rough draft. As long as you have your foundation set, there’s nothing you can’t fix during the editing stage. Just breathe, and have fun. If you want to add something, add it. If you’re not liking something, skip it. If you don’t know if something would be realistic, run with it.
