Hollywood’s New Blood (1988)

You could easily be forgiven for assuming that Hollywood’s New Blood, with its title and box art, takes place on a Hollywood film set, or any film set, or just somewhere in Hollywood. But what it actually is, is a group of actors on a retreat in a lakefront cabin, getting killed by… I think the survivors of an accident on a film set. It seems like they’re supposed to be ghosts at first, but then they’re just dudes. Like really slow moving dudes. From there it’s basically what you’d expect, people get killed off one by one until the tides get tuned on the killers. In terms of slashers, it’s certainly not the worst, but also a far step from okayest.

One such filmmaker is Simon Gamulla, who at one time was on the cusp of underground media notoriety. The serial frustration of debilitating creative setbacks have since ground him down, and now Simon Gamulla finds himself employed as a content moderator for a tech upstart.

The onslaught exposure to a relentless barrage of disturbing information and gruesome imagery awakens something deep within Simon Gamulla… and it ain’t no fucking film.

Phantom Brother (1988)

A movie that almost has a point. There are good elements, but none of them are ever explored in any meaningful way. However, the worst part is an incredibly inconsistent tone throughout. It seems like it wasn’t intended to be a comedy, but partway through they realized the movie wasn’t very good and switched gears to try and make it a comedy. The comedic elements shot at the main location get progressively more over the top as the movie progresses, but then wherever it cuts to another location you’re immediately hit with a style of overacting that makes Scary Movie 5 look subtle and restrained by comparison. I will admit, there is one funny joke, but even the setup for that joke makes little to no sense.
