A Wish Before Midnight . . . . . Across an amethystine night sky, the fleeting arcs of shooting stars form incandescent traces. Their distorted echoes mirrored by our thoughts, influence our desire to make a wish. [] The Doomsday Clock was originally intended to show how close we are to nuclear catastrophe. Nowadays it is also used to show how close we are to a climate catastrophe. It is currently set at one hundred seconds before midnight. Many believe we’ve already past that point. [] Biodiversity is essential for the processes that support all life on Earth. However, in a list of threats to biodiversity, climate change ranks fifth. The change in our use of land and the oceans is ranked number one. It is followed by species overexploitation, the global spread of invasive species and disease, and pollution. These threats are a consequence of how we treat the world. Their impact can be reduced by changing how we consume resources, produce food, by genuinly restricting urban sprawl, and improving how we interact with Nature [] Each and every one of us can make a difference by confronting complacency, acting locally, and going beyond good intentions and wishes. Windshift Unnaturally forced by technique Leaves move, seemingly in unison Beautiful abstract patterns emerge Be still and wait for the shifting wind How happily they dance Frenetic free spirits 🍁🎨 I was drawn to ICM images and was impressed by how photographer‘s create beauty from, in many cases, everyday items or scenes. Their subtle softened hues, sense of motion and sometimes extraordinary blends of intense colour are amazing. I am still learning and exploring the possibilities. 🍁🎨 I find my intentional movement has its limits. I can move the camera in only so many ways and I found the patterns were similar and, I’ll be honest, some of my images are repetitive. The subject matter could differ, but the results were anthropogenically constrained. Like an artist’s brushstroke across a canvas, I was controlling the outcome. 🍁🎨 Placing my camera aside, I watched the trees and watched each branch and leaf moving individually or together, but differently. Swaying, fluttering and going still, The variability in direction and intensity of each breeze or gust, and the angle, shape and orientation of each leaf and branch, meant that their movement was random and wonderful to behold. 🍁🎨 I am sure there’s a mathematical formula showing how even this is controlled, but to me it is nature’s beautifully choreographed chaos. Maple Trees . . . . . Leaves dance in the wind, to echoes of autumns past Colours fade with time [] In my previous post I mentioned that those of us living in North America are blessed to witness Mother Natures annual fiery tapestry. The stars of the show are the Maples dressed in there finest Autumnal hues. [] It got me thinking, how long have Maple trees been around. It turns out just over 60 million years! [] Then I wondered what those ancient maple-filled forests must have looked like. Were the Paleogene fall colours as vibrant as today’s or more-so? [] I found the posted link (see my comment) and I have to say it’s a long read for someone who isn’t a dendrologist. However, it’s still worth it, as it provides us with some important thoughts on whether maples, that have survived millions of years of adverse climate change will adapt, survive and still be around for our kids, our grandchildren and beyond. A deciduous dream Fall’s explosion of colours A feast for your eyes Nature’s autumnal show is an incredible feast of colour. A mind-blowing kaleidoscope of all the shades of yellow, red and orange. The tundra (if you ever been there in August) is ignited by the fiery show, and the south’s deciduous woods and forests become a glowing tapestry. Our tree-lined streets and garden shrubs radiate a fire-hearth warmth before the onset of winter that we know will follow. As the season comes to a close, those vivd colours fade to feuille-morte’s yellows and browns and those trees that provided summer shade stand as dark dormant sentinels waiting for the warmth and lengthening days of spring. As a geologist, I can’t help but find fall’s colours reminding me of limonite, copper, wulfenite, and of course gold. We are lucky to witness this annual event and hopefully realize that trees enrich our lives, and the towns and cities we live in. In Ontario and elsewhere in North America, our urban forests are threatened by invasive species (e.g., Gypsy Moth, Emerald Ash Borer and Asian Longhorn Beetle), agriculture and continued urban sprawl. Gold over Blue [] The sun at days end touches the rising mountain A vibrant blue gem [] . . . . . While it’s not a sapphire, this gem is a multifaceted natural treasure. [] Rising from the southern shore of Georgian Bay, Blue Mountain is part of the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO 1990). [] With its economy reliant on tourism, most of its visitors are attracted by the all-season outdoor activities the region provides. [] However, its beauty lies in its forest-covered slopes and valleys, its streams, ponds and marshes, and the fields and orchards interwoven with them. Wetland A treed palisade Protecting yet protected Its waters shine bright . . . . . [🌎🌍🌏] This photo was taken as the golden glow of the early evening sun lit up the ten-acre Lighthouse Point Conservation area on Georgian Bay. The shrubs and trees growing along the edge act as a partial protective barrier but invasive species like Phragmites are a reminder of how we impact wetland ecosystems. However, continued development, in this case along Georgian Bay‘s south shore, is a greater threat. [🌎🌍🌏] Less than 17% of the Earth’s surface falls within areas of protected and conserved land and inland water ecosystems. [🌎🌍🌏] In Ontario, urban sprawl, new highways, and the building of recreational homes and complexes threatens protected lands and waters. This unsustainable process threatens the 450-acre Silver Creek Wetland, west of Lighthouse Point. Home to diverse fauna and flora, it is considered the last intact coastal wetland in the region. A petition has been set up to save the Silver Creek Wetland. [🌎🌍🌏] We can’t just hope our wetland waters shine bright for years to come, we have to become active in their preservation wherever we live.
