Wednesday, February 28: Probot, "Centuries of Sin"

Within the context of Probot, Dave Grohl and Conrad Lant were perfect for each other.  For as much as Grohl loves to tout his underground bonafides (and is sincere in his love for punk and metal), he can’t help but write and play shiny rock songs; by the same token, while Cronos has always aspired to some level of professionalism, he is constitutionally incapable of not shambling and stumbling with a cacophonous belch.  So on that level, “Centuries of Sin” found the two meeting in the middle: this was far more competent than anything Venom ever recorded, but Cronos sounded just as ravenous as ever.  Grohl couldn’t resist a certain slickness in his writing and playing, even as he tried to make a down and dirty metal record, so having an actual degenerate on hand to croak out some dimestore sacrilege went a long way towards dirtying things up.  “Centuries of Sin” was basically what Venom (or at least Cronos) always wished they sounded like, and even if Probot was ultimately nothing more than a fun one-off, at least it gave everyone the chance to hear disparate players mix it up and bring out the best in each other.
