Invasive Species and Xenophobia
Invasive species are complicated! People have a lot of feelings about them, positive and negative. Are plants that move "invaders" "colonizing", "immigrants", "citizens"? What does it mean to kill species that are from somewhere else? What if that species legitimately makes a poor neighbor and causes extinctions in other, native species? This complex, culturally-loaded issue is a foundational issue behind a lot of plant conservation and restoration.
This is a juicy and still actively disputed topic! The Guardian recently had a big article on colonialism in Botany, (tbh her views are dated and reductive, imo) and it’s come up again this week, to much hostility (cw: reddit). Yes, my region's native plant restoration came from literal nazis, but also, the impacts of some invasive species are real, not figments of a racist imagination. How do we balance these issues? What does ethical invasive management look like?
Since it’s such a juicy topic, I wanted to offer a few fun readings to share:
The Native Plant Enthusiasm: Ecological Panacea or Xenophobia?, Gert Gröning and Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn, 2004, Arnoldia.
THE CLASSIC 20th century German nazis and native plants paper. Made a huge splash when it came out, and you will still encounter people who paint all native plant stuff with this brush. Summary: yeah the nazis loved their native plants and used them as part of their conquering process. Also, the first prairie plantings ever, located in Chicago, were done by a racist probable-nazi for racist reasons, full stop. I’ll let him speak for himself: “The gardens that I created myself shall… be in harmony with their landscape environment and the racial characteristics of its inhabitants. They shall express the spirit of America and therefore shall be free of foreign character as far as possible… the Latin and the Oriental crept and creeps more and more over our land, coming from the South, which is settled by Latin people, and also from other centers of mixed masses of immigrants. The Germanic character of our race, of our cities and settlements was overgrown by foreign character. The Latin spirit has spoiled a lot and still spoils things every day.” - Jens Jensen
Botanical decolonization: rethinking native plants, Tomaz Mastnak, 2014, Environment and Planning D: Society and Space
Rather than viewing native plant plantings as an act of racially-pure occupation, Mastnak positions native plants in California as a decolonization of the sub/urban lawn. Uses a lot of quotations from 16th century English philosopher Francis Bacon, and is heavy on the philosophical musings.
From killing lists to healthy country: Aboriginal approaches to weed control in the Kimberley, Western Australia by Bach et al., 2019, Journal of Environmental Management.
This paper talks through some of the native vs invasive debate, and offers a different perspective on how to approach to plant invasive management based on cultural relations, rather than country of origin or behavior.
Beyond ‘Native V. Alien’: Critiques of the Native/alien Paradigm in the Anthropocene, and Their Implications, Charles R. Warren, 2021, Ethics, Policy, & Environment
DENSE but thorough, if you want to follow the entire history of the native/invasive debate, this has you covered. The most interesting stuff, in my opinion, is the discussion of invasive denialism, IE: the impasse of “You’re just being racist!” Vs “You know nothing about ecology!” I recommend the Discussion, which starts on page 13.

Wednesday 1st May 2024
We are fast closing in now to the end of our trip with the flight home scheduled for Friday arriving home on Saturday. So today is the penultimate day on the train. Overnight we slipped secretly into Beibridge, a frontier town minutes away from the border with South Africa. A more scruffy station would be hard to find. The immigration man was tidied away in an office behind piles of cardboard boxes and files full of long undiscovered, lost documents. His occupation spelled out on a handwritten sign hanging skewed from the platform ceiling. Another lopsided sign encouraged 3rd and 4th class passengers to use a rather dubious waiting room. In preparation for the next leg of our journey, the two Rovos diesel tractor units would need to be disconnected and replaced by a single South African unit piloted by a South African driver. We were eating our breakfast of Eggs Benedict as the train moved slowly out and we were warned that we would have something less than ten minutes before we would cross the Limpopo River and leave Zimbabwe behind us. The Limpopo of course made famous by Rudyard Kipling's Just So story, Elephant's Child. It was good to see, but an unreliable straw poll might suggest that all had expected the river to be just a little wider!!
Our train has 20 carriages in all, eleven of them being the sleeper side of the business, then two dining carriages with two kitchen carriages, four lounges, one carriage for staff accommodation. In total there are 53 fee paying guests on board. In all the train is likely to be about 500 meters in length; probably half the length of the train that carried us across Australia.
Lunch was served at one. It seemed odd that we had had no excursions today. Instead we sat in the lounge, or in the sunny but hot observation platform at the very back of the train. Passing through stations or across road junctions small children would appear from nowhere and run behind the train squealing excitedly. The heat would beat down mercilessly and force us eventually to move into the cool of the air-conditioned carriage. Conversation flows and you talk to people of all walks of life and nationality. The South African is worried about the outcome of the forthcoming May elections. In particular, nationalisation, poor management and yet more restrictions on their way of life. Many talk of leaving the country if all goes badly, including the Americans. We have met many nice and interesting people on the train. Especially Linda and Pam; sister's but one from the UK and the other from Canada. A pair of farmers from UK, Julie and Andrew who want to retire but a farm is a huge responsibility and difficult to hand on, let alone sell.
The evening meal had a real end of term feel to it. The fillet steak was so tender it virtually walked into our mouths. The wines flowed superceded by liqueurs and to finish the perfect evening we retreated to the observation car for cocktails. The ladies in their finery and the gents making the most of a tie and collar. I think all 53 guests on board had most likely had conversations with eachother. I'm not sure if our Christmas card list has increased much in size but friendship's have certainly been made.
Tomorrow after breakfast we all go our separate ways. The Rovos train gets washed down and prepared for it's next journey. We go to Pretoria for the night and then forwarded to Johannesburg for our flight home on Friday.
Then Kolokolo Bird said, with a mournful cry, 'Go to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, and find out.' Rudyard Kipling

Anyone protesting Western colonialism, occupation, and terror is, apparently, a terrorist. Who calls Hamas terrorists?
Israel
USA (except South America)
England (the Irish certainly don't, so I refused to say the United Kingdom)
Australia (the white part)
EU (and we know that is not agreed to by several of the countries, too)
Japan
The rest of the world - yeah, imagine that the world is more than the colonizing West - don't.
Israel’s role as a perpetrator of state-sponsored terrorism or state terrorism is condemned by Bolivia, Iran, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Spain, and Yemen. Dozens of countries around the world have called on Israel to show more restraint in the war in Gaza, while a smaller number have gone a step further by severing relations or making other official diplomatic protests. The list of countries that condemn Israel for its violations of international law in Gaza includes the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Morocco, Bahrain, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Belize, Chile, Honduras, Colombia, Bolivia, and counting.
Even the Pope says Israel's war on Gaza is terrorism.
Nelson Mandela was in USA's terror watchlist until 2018. The guy who fought against apartheid state of South Africa, won a Nobel peace prize, became a president, a beloved character across the globe was in the terror watchlist of USA. So I wouldn't actually take murica's opinion about labeling a person or group of people as terrorists. Chances are they're actually fighting for the freedom of their country.
That's why they call Hamas terrorists instead of freedom fighters. In their eyes The Nelson Mandela was a terrorist.
Anyways as Nelson Mandela said

A Comprehensive Guide to Growing Bone Morphogenetic Protein Market
The global bone morphogenetic protein market size is expected to reach USD 459.9 million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 4.93% from 2025 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Increasing incidence of spinal fusion, trauma, and small bone surgeries coupled with demand for faster bone recovery are the key drivers affirming growth of BMP market.
Low back pain and spinal disc dislocation are some of the most common occupational hazards. Over 75% of such disorders require spinal surgery after noninvasive treatment options are unable to provide any relief. Minimally invasive surgery, shorter hospital stays, and fast recovery are common demands observed among patients. BMP has gained high acceptance among orthopedic surgeons in recent years owing to its ability to cater above mentioned benefits
Sport-related injuries, growing geriatric population, and increasing awareness about osteoinduction products as an alternative to bone grafting are other drivers accentuating  market growth. BMP has reported outstanding results over bone graft, such as lack of donor morbidity, extensive surgical procedure, higher recovery time, pain & numbness, and high cost.
Gather more insights about the market drivers, restrains and growth of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein Market
Bone Morphogenetic Protein Market Report Highlights
• rhBMP-2 and rhBMP-7 are the commercially available recombinant BMPs. rhBMP-2 is widely known for its high osteoinductive property for faster formation of bone and cartilage in bone fusion procedures.
• The rhBMP-2 segment held the largest market share of 73.9% in 2024 and is anticipated to grow at the higher CAGR from 2025 to 2030.
• rhBMP-7 segment is expected to grow at a moderate CAGR from 2025 to 2030. As healthcare professionals increasingly look for alternatives to autografts for bone repair, rhBMP-7's ability to promote healing without the complications associated with harvesting grafts could drive its adoption in clinical practice.
• The spinal fusion segment held the largest market share of 50.3% in 2024. The growth is attributed to the development of effective and efficient solutions, the increasing acceptance of these proteins over conventional treatments, and the ongoing research initiatives that strengthen their position in the market.
• North America held the largest market share of 49.6% in the global bone morphogenetic protein market in 2024. High number of orthopedic surgical procedures, and availability of favorable reimbursement policies are drivers that can be attributed to for largest share.

How to Find an Employer Willing to Sponsor Your Migration
Tumblr media
Securing an employer sponsorship for migration to Australia is a significant step towards achieving your career and life goals. Whether you're seeking opportunities in South Australia or across the country, understanding how to find an employer willing to sponsor your migration is crucial. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate this process effectively.
Research Your Industry and Occupation Demand Start by researching industries and occupations in Australia that are experiencing skill shortages. This information is pivotal as employers in these sectors are more likely to consider sponsoring skilled migrants to fill critical roles. Websites like the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs and industry-specific job boards provide insights into demand for skilled workers.
Build a Targeted Resume and Cover Letter Craft a resume and cover letter tailored to Australian employers. Highlight your skills, qualifications, and relevant experience that align with the needs of your target industry. Emphasize any international experience, language proficiency, or specialized skills that set you apart as an attractive candidate for sponsorship.
Network Effectively Networking is essential in finding employers willing to sponsor your migration. Attend industry conferences, seminars, and networking events both in person and online. Join professional associations and groups related to your field of expertise. Establish connections with professionals who may have insights or direct contacts with employers seeking skilled migrants.
Utilize Online Job Portals Explore online job portals and recruitment websites that specialize in connecting skilled migrants with Australian employers offering sponsorship opportunities. Websites such as SEEK, LinkedIn, and Indeed often feature job listings that explicitly mention sponsorship or visa support for eligible candidates.
Contact Migration Agencies and Consultants Engage with reputable migration agencies and consultants who specialize in employer sponsored migration. These professionals have extensive networks and insights into employers actively seeking skilled migrants. They can assist you in identifying suitable opportunities, preparing visa applications, and navigating the sponsorship process effectively.
Directly Approach Potential Employers Take a proactive approach by directly contacting potential employers that match your skills and qualifications. Research companies that have a history of sponsoring skilled migrants or express a commitment to diversity and international talent. Tailor your approach by demonstrating how your skills can meet their specific business needs and contribute to their growth.
Stay Informed About Visa Options and Requirements Stay updated on the latest visa options, requirements, and changes in Australian immigration policies. Familiarize yourself with visa subclasses such as the Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa and the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa. Understanding these options will help you articulate your eligibility and value to potential sponsors.
Be Patient and Persistent Securing employer sponsorship for migration can be a competitive and time-consuming process. Be patient and persistent in your efforts. Continue to refine your approach, expand your network, and enhance your skills while maintaining a positive attitude throughout your job search.
Prepare for Interviews and Assessments If you receive interest from potential employers, be prepared for interviews and skills assessments. Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role, your understanding of the employer's business, and how your expertise aligns with their needs. Showcase your adaptability and commitment to integrating into the Australian workplace.
Follow Up and Maintain Relationships After interviews or initial contacts, follow up with employers to express your continued interest and gratitude. Maintain professional relationships with contacts you've made throughout your job search, as they may provide valuable insights or future opportunities.
Conclusion Finding an employer willing to sponsor your migration requires a strategic approach, persistence, and leveraging the right resources. By conducting thorough research, networking effectively, utilizing professional assistance, and demonstrating your value to potential sponsors, you can increase your chances of securing employer sponsorship for migration to Australia.

Exploring the top 10 countries with the best healthcare system
Tumblr media
Healthcare refers to various systems that help humans maintain their health by treating or preventing illnesses, injuries, and diseases. These systems include physicians, hospitals, dental offices, psychological services, nursing homes, physical and occupational therapy facilities. Access to healthcare varies across nations, communities, and people, with economic and social factors being the main determinants.
Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, and countries with a stable, accessible healthcare and affordable healthcare system tend to live longer and have a higher quality of life. Health outcomes are better in nations with well-functioning healthcare systems. Factors determining healthcare quality include the care process, administrative efficiency, equity in healthcare, and healthcare outcomes, such as population health, mortality amenable to healthcare, and disease-specific health outcomes.
Identifying a top-tier healthcare system is not easy due to the complexity of healthcare systems and the disagreement on what makes a flawless system. However, health-focused organizations continue to search for the perfect system, despite the elusive nature of such systems, as healthcare is crucial and requires continuous improvement.
Taiwan
Taiwan's healthcare system is ranked highly in the world because of its extensive coverage, excellent medical care, and reasonable prices.
With a single-payer system that is funded by a combination of taxes and premiums, the nation has achieved universal health coverage, guaranteeing that all citizens and legal residents have access to healthcare services without encountering financial obstacles.
Doctors, nurses, and pharmacists are just a few of the many highly qualified healthcare professionals who support Taiwan's healthcare system.
South Korea
One of the top on the list is South Korea, which has an advanced, effective healthcare system with highly skilled medical personnel, well-equipped hospitals, and other amenities.
The National Health Insurance (NHI) is the name of the public healthcare system in South Korea. Preventative healthcare in South Korea emphasizes routine examinations and illness detection. In order to increase citizen access to healthcare services, it has also made significant investments in healthcare infrastructure and technological advancements, including telemedicine and electronic health records.
Australia
Australia, which offers both public and private healthcare, ranks well among the nations with the greatest healthcare systems worldwide. With readily available and reasonably priced healthcare, it also boasts one of the longest life expectancies in the world.
The Medicare public healthcare program, which covers treatment in public hospitals and all or part of the cost of doctor consultations, is supported by the Australian government. Though there are alternatives for private medical insurance, not all medical treatments are covered under this program.
Canada
Medicare is Canada's national health care program, providing universal healthcare coverage to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The government oversees and finances the system, with each province and territory responsible for providing public health initiatives to its citizens.
The Canada Health Act ensures equitable access to healthcare through social assistance, providing comprehensive care, including medical treatments, prescription medications, and preventive measures at no cost. Family doctors serve as gatekeepers for specialist consultations and hospital referrals, prioritizing primary care services. This strategy promotes early intervention and reduces unnecessary hospital stays, resulting in cost-effective resource use.
Sweden
In Scandinavia, it's a three-way tie as Sweden is included among the nations with the greatest healthcare systems worldwide. Sweden's 83-year average life expectancy is comparable to that of Iceland and Norway. At just 5.4 days, it also has one of the shortest hospital stays in all of Europe, and the infant mortality rate is less than 2.6 per 1,000 births.
Sweden boasts more than 100 hospitals for its 10 million inhabitants, so even those living in rural areas can receive top-notch medical care. But mental health is where the Swedish truly shine; in fact, many lists have named Sweden the top nation in the world for mental healthcare this year.
Ireland
Aside from these delightful features of the nation, another advantage of relocating to the Emerald Isle is Ireland's healthcare reform system. For those who intend to remain in the nation for a minimum of one year, the public system is reasonably priced and accessible. In Ireland, everyone has access to high-quality, universal public healthcare. The system is available to new residents without any waiting time. About 30% of people have free access to the public system. To keep healthcare cheap for everyone else, the government subsidizes costs.
Netherlands
The Netherlands completes the top 10 countries for healthcare in 2024. The Netherlands boasts an amazing universal healthcare system that is the envy of the world, and their system routinely ranks highly in many important categories.
Even though it is a small nation, the Netherlands has more than 586 hospitals, more than 53,000 hospital beds, and more than 500,000 individuals working in the medical field. The Netherlands boasts one of the lowest obesity rates in Europe (partly because of its strong emphasis on encouraging healthy lives), as well as one of the shortest average hospital stays (5.2 days).
The Netherlands is home to many of Europe's leading pharmaceutical companies and is the epicenter of pharmaceutical research and development, which may account for why the Dutch are among the lowest spenders of pharmaceuticals.
Germany
The government provides the majority of the funding for the universal, multi-payer healthcare system in Germany. It is among the world's most prosperous healthcare systems. Nevertheless, Germany has the eighth-highest percentage of practicing physicians worldwide and the 13th-highest life expectancy. Germany has the greatest amount of spending in Europe, which is not surprising.
In the German healthcare system, freedom and choice are highly valued. This extends beyond picking a Krankenkassen and deciding between public and private insurance plans. Germans are not constrained by geography and are not required to select a local doctor.
Norway
Norway boasts one of the greatest healthcare systems in the world in addition to ranking eighth in the world for expat living. Norway is a powerhouse in the global arena, spending the fourth most on healthcare in the OECD and ranking 10th in the world with an 83.1-year life expectancy, second only to Spain in Europe.
Furthermore, Norway is setting the standard for accessibility to healthcare. Less than 1% of Norwegian adults did not receive the appropriate treatment in 2019, and new telecommunications methods that were implemented during the epidemic have subsequently become standard. Norway is able to brag of having the second highest amount of money spent on mental health care globally, which is likely why it is frequently included in lists of the happiest nations on the planet.
Israel
The cutting-edge procedures and therapies available in the globe can be obtained through Israeli medical care. Israeli clinics, hospitals, and dentists are sought after by medical tourists. However, the services provided to foreign visitors and Israeli citizens differ.
Israel's National Health Insurance Law applies to all citizens and lawful permanent residents. Citizens and residents of Israel are legally entitled to obtain healthcare within a reasonable distance and within a reasonable period from their place of residence. Israeli people pay taxes ranging from 3% to 5% of their income to support this system; the government provides the remaining funding. For six months to a year, many newly naturalized Americans are eligible for free healthcare.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the exploration of the top 10 countries with the best healthcare underscores the multifaceted nature of healthcare excellence. Each nation demonstrates a unique blend of factors contributing to its ranking, including accessibility, quality of care, healthcare infrastructure, and healthcare innovation. While countries like Switzerland, Japan, and Germany consistently rank high, it's essential to recognize that healthcare systems are dynamic and subject to change. Moreover, this analysis highlights the importance of continuous improvement and collaboration in advancing global healthcare standards. By learning from the successes of top-ranking countries, nations can strive towards achieving equitable, efficient, and high-quality healthcare for all.
