MOTHERS, SONS, DAUGHTERS
Opening this weekend...
Evil Dead Rise--This fifth feature in the beloved horror series that began in 1981 moves most of the action out of the woods and into the city. An earthquake uncovers a copy of the "Book of the Dead" in the bowels of a decaying L.A. apartment building. Near the tome are a couple of vinyl records on which a priest has recorded the incantations necessary to invoke the evil spirits that re-animate dead bodies to torment the living. The kid who finds all this is an aspiring DJ, so he has turntables, so...
Through this laborious set-up, the lissome tattoo-artist single mother (Alyssa Sutherland) ends up possessed by a malevolent force. It's up to her guitar-tech sister (Lily Sullivan) to defend her nephew and two nieces. Gruesome mayhem ensues, hitting on the obligatory tropes of the series--grinning, leering, levitating corpses, oceanic amounts of gore, hurtling demonic POV, the repeated phrase "dead by dawn!"--as well as nods to Kubrick's The Shining and to Fargo.
I'm afraid I've run out of patience with this style of horror flick. Watching a woman's corpse terrorize and murder her children probably wouldn't be my idea of entertainment in any case, but here it's not only unpleasant but tedious. I've grown weary of films in which characters stand transfixed as something ghastly happens in front of them. After a while one begins to suspect that all the interminable gasping and whimpering and slowly backing away may not even really be about generating terror or heightening suspense, but rather about padding a thin script out to feature length.
Sam Raimi's original Evil Dead trilogy was not inconsequential cinema. The "shaky cam" techniques that Raimi and his cronies developed on those indies, out of economic necessity, were highly influential on the Coen Brothers and Barry Sonnenfeld and others. But beyond the realm of technical innovation, Raimi's movies, especially the marvelous Evil Dead II of 1987, had a low-tech vigor, a whimsical sense of macabre comedy and a guileless campfire-story gusto that, combined with the one-of-kind slapstick acting of star Bruce Campbell, made them classics.
Raimi and Campbell are listed as executive producers on Evil Dead Rise, but almost none of the twisted magic of their early work can be felt here. There's some elegance to the production design, and leading ladies Sutherland and Sullivan are stunning, Bukowski-style L.A. goddesses. There's a sweet line in which the youngest niece tells her aunt why she thinks she'll be a good mom someday. And the Hieronymus Bosch-like horror into which the demon's victims conglomerate themselves is a decent Raimi-ish idea, though the CGI renders it soulless.
I'm told that this film, directed by the Irish Lee Cronin, was originally slated to open on cable TV but got a theatrical release after test audiences took to it. So it may be that I've just aged out of this sort of thing, and the movie will truly please audiences. If so, even though it's not for me, I nonetheless find it cheering that people still want to scream in company.
Somewhere in Queens--Less than a month after opening the Phoenix Film Festival, Ray Romano's feature directorial debut opens theatrically here in the Valley. Romano, who co-wrote the script, also stars as Leo Russo, a bedraggled hangdog sad sack who works for his family's contracting business in the title borough. Leo isn't the favorite son, however. His father (Tony LoBianco) shows more respect to Leo's slick brother Frank (Sebastian Maniscalco). Maybe everybody loves Raymond, but nobody loves Leo.
Well, that's not true. His siblings and his wife Angela (Laurie Metcalf) love him well enough, but they don't take him seriously, or listen to him. A sultry widower (Jennifer Esposito) on a jobsite seems to take a shine to him, but he's not the adulterous type. Leo does have a source of pride, however: his quiet son "Sticks" (Jacob Ward) is a high school basketball star. One night at a big game, Leo and Angela are surprised to learn that Sticks has a girlfriend (Sadie Stanley) they didn't know about. The same night, they learn that he may be good enough for a college scholarship.
Though it's often funny, a forlorn atmosphere hangs over the early scenes of this movie that had me bracing for some sort of wretched tragedy that would leave the characters standing around emergency rooms or something like that. But the story, though it stings, doesn't drag us through the mud; it takes off in unexpected and painful yet believable and sometimes exhilarating directions.
The feel for the setting is convincing, and so is the large cast. The ensemble scenes are well-executed, especially the girlfriend's debut at a big family dinner, where she both irks and impresses the relations with her nerviness. Romano plays Leo as a toned-down version of his stage and sitcom persona, cowed and slow-witted, and his tentative, apologetic boyishness is poignant, even when you can see how his family could find it irritating.
For a while it seems like the film is underutilizing the mighty Metcalf, but finally Angela gets her big moment. Romano lets her articulate the theme of the movie, admitting probably the most frequent emotion of the parenting experience: Fear.
Also opening this weekend, at Harkins Chandler Fashion 20 and Harkins Arrowhead, is Tom Huang's fine comedy-drama Dealing with Dad...
It's slated to play at Harkins Shea and at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre in Sedona starting April 28.
I reviewed it last year, after it made the rounds of several festivals including Phoenix Film Festival. It's very much worth checking out.

‘The Big Bang Theory’ Offshoot In Works At Max From Chuck Lorre
The Big Bang Theory universe is expanding. Max, the combined HBO Max-Discovery+ service, and Big Bang co-creator/executive producer Chuck Lorre are developing a new comedy series in The Big Bang Theory universe. The project, from Warner Bros. Television and studio-based Chuck Lorre Prods., was revealed during Max’s presentation Wednesday. No further details were disclosed, with sources indicating that the project is very early in the development process, and it has not been determined yet what character(s) it would center on.
Tapping into the world of The Big Bang Theory makes sense for Max as reruns of the original series are among the streamer’s top draws.
The new project makes the second collaboration between Max, Lorre, and WBTV. Lorre and Nick Bakay are currently in production on the new Max Original comedy series How to Be a Bookie, starring Sebastian Maniscalco. This also would mark the second Big Bang offshoot following the prequel Young Sheldon, which is in its sixth season on CBS and ranks as the #1 comedy on TV among total viewers. All episodes of The Big Bang Theory and the first five seasons of Young Sheldon are available to stream on Max in the U.S. (via Deadline)

What makes this project even more thrilling is its promise of multiple sequels, each exploring fictionalized wars inspired by real-world conflicts, creating an expansive universe with endless possibilities. ChatGPT Answer:
The franchise potential of this military-themed film, based on the Ukraine war, is substantial. Let’s break this down point by point to fully understand how it can develop into a successful multi-installment franchise:
1. Relevance of the Ukraine War as a Source Material
Global Significance: The ongoing Ukraine war has captured the attention of global audiences due to its geopolitical impact, emotional stakes, and real-world implications. The war is not just a military conflict; it’s a humanitarian crisis with international ramifications. Using this conflict as the backdrop for the first installment gives the film immediate relevance, aligning it with real-world events.
Narrative Depth: The complexities and moral questions surrounding war, as seen in Ukraine, allow for deep storytelling. The real-world setting provides a rich foundation for a dramatic and action-packed narrative, offering the opportunity to explore the personal and political consequences of war.
2. Star-Studded Ensemble Cast
Proven Actors: The involvement of well-established actors like Mark Wahlberg, Jon Bernthal, Jeremy Renner, and Kevin Bacon brings immediate recognition and credibility to the film. These actors have diverse acting skills and a strong track record in action and drama, which will attract large audiences. Their presence in the film ensures that the movie will have a built-in fanbase, contributing to its commercial success.
Collective Star Power: The ensemble nature of the cast not only ensures variety in character dynamics but also increases the film’s visibility. Each actor brings their own fanbase, amplifying the movie's reach and appeal.
3. Military-Themed Genre
Appeal of Action Movies: Military-themed films have always enjoyed wide popularity due to their action-packed sequences, high stakes, and exploration of heroism and sacrifice. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, American Sniper, and Black Hawk Down have proven that audiences are deeply interested in films that depict real or fictional wars, especially when they are well-executed and emotionally resonant.
Potential for Explosive Action: The military genre lends itself well to high-octane action scenes—something that appeals to a broad demographic. From large-scale battles to personal hero moments, the film can provide a range of action-packed sequences that keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
4. Franchise Structure and Sequels
Expansive Storytelling: The first film, focusing on the Ukraine war, lays the foundation for multiple sequels exploring other fictionalized wars. This model, similar to successful franchises like Mission: Impossible or Fast & Furious, can provide a continuous flow of content while maintaining audience interest.
World-Building: Like other franchise models, the potential to expand into a fictional universe of wars allows for diverse storytelling opportunities. Each sequel can tackle different geopolitical issues, different characters, and new challenges. This keeps the narrative fresh while building on established themes and characters.
Character Development: The recurring appearances of the main cast members in each sequel allow for deep character development. Audiences will become attached to these characters, following them through different wars and conflicts, which strengthens long-term investment in the franchise.
5. Billion-Dollar Box Office Potential
Global Appeal: The war in Ukraine is a subject that resonates internationally, and military-themed films have universal appeal. By incorporating action, drama, and political intrigue, the film will attract audiences not just in the U.S., but globally, especially in countries with a vested interest in military history or current events.
High Demand for Content: The demand for action-packed content, especially when it aligns with real-world events, is a major driver for box office success. The current global geopolitical climate also means that films about military conflict and heroism can draw large crowds, making this reboot a prime candidate to exceed the billion-dollar mark at the box office.
Cross-Platform Potential: Beyond the box office, this franchise can expand into television, video games, and merchandise. The military genre has proven successful in adapting to various platforms. For instance, the Call of Duty video game franchise has consistently been a billion-dollar enterprise. Expanding the Top Secret franchise into multiple media formats will further enhance its earning potential.
6. Strategic Timing and Cultural Impact
Cultural Sensitivity: By drawing inspiration from current events, the film taps into a collective consciousness that is already primed for stories of resistance, resilience, and global conflict. Audiences may feel a stronger connection to the film due to the ongoing nature of the real-world conflict in Ukraine.
Timing of Release: If released at the right time, when interest in the Ukraine conflict remains high or the movie offers a timely commentary on the war, it can generate strong word-of-mouth and sustained box office revenue, positioning it as a film that resonates with audiences on a deeper level.
7. Commercial Viability Through Merchandise and Spin-offs
Merchandising: Military films often perform well in terms of merchandising opportunities, such as action figures, clothing, posters, and replicas of military equipment seen in the movie. The success of merchandising can add a significant revenue stream to the overall financial success of the franchise.
Spin-offs and Related Media: Beyond sequels, the success of the franchise could give rise to spin-off films or series that explore side characters or new military conflicts. A successful franchise like Top Secret could easily branch into several different projects, broadening its reach even further.
8. Conclusion: A Billion-Dollar Franchise in the Making
With its combination of high-profile actors, military action, a relevant real-world backdrop, and potential for numerous sequels and spin-offs, this reimagined Top Secret reboot has all the hallmarks of a successful, long-lasting franchise. By tapping into both real-world events and the broad appeal of military action films, it holds the potential to bring in massive box office returns and extend well beyond the first film.
In summary, the potential for this military-themed Top Secret reboot is extraordinary. Its relevance to contemporary events, broad appeal across international markets, and the opportunity to develop a rich, multi-installment story makes it a prime candidate for becoming a billion-dollar franchise.

Stephen, telling a bored Ancient One about his weekend: So we pull up to the house. We get out of the car, now we don’t go right in right away because Tony’s gotta coach me before we go into any kind of social event. He’s like:
Tony: Just smile :)
Stephen: So I tell him, “don’t worry about it, it’s just Sam and Bucky, we’re gonna have fun.”
Stephen: So, come up to the door, I ring the bell. They answer the door as a couple. That bothered me!

Enjoy watching Blake Shelton's Lake House video for a peak inside Blake's Oklahoma lifestyle across both his Lake Texoma House and his 1,300 acre ranch property.
Watch Blake Shelton’s Lake House video to see why Oklahoma living is the perfect escape from city life for Gwen Stefani and her three sons. Blake and Gwen, have been dating over 4 years as the couple started dating in 2015 after splitting from their former spouses. Blake and Gwen’s relationship appears to just get stronger every year and Gwen’s family has made frequent trips to visit Blake’s two Oklahoma properties. Watch the video to discover why Gwen’s family loves visiting Blake in Oklahoma and see additional details about each Oklahoma property below.
Blake and Gwen’s Oklahoma Lifestyle
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani will continue to split their time between Oklahoma and Los Angeles, which seems to be working out just fine. Gwen’s entire family has visited Oklahoma including her parents, brother and kids. The Lake House is where Blake wrote and recorded his album “Lake Texohma Shore” and the house has a built in recording studio. This is also where Blake recently recorded his “Hell Right” song that features Trace Adkins. Gwen Stefani and her kids enjoy plenty of adventures at Blake’s two Oklahoma properties including: shooting hoops on the outdoor basketball court, riding ATVs, riding around on Blake’s big tractor, fishing, making bon fires, and swimming. If you don’t want to cook, the family can always take a trip to Blake’s Ole Red restaurant venue in nearby Tishomingo. In a prior interview with Marie Claire, Gwen stated, “It’s very tribal,” she said. “Blake has a sister, she comes with her kids. We cook and get muddy and dirty. There are ATVs. Being a mother of three boys, it’s kind of the perfect place…”
In Oklahoma, the family eats down home cooking and there is not a Starbucks in sight. The entire family can relax not be chased around by the Paparazzi.
Blake Shelton’s Lake House (Texoma Shores)
The backyard of the Lake House is the center point of the property with a giant swimming pool and an attached swim-up tiki bar. There are also three hut-style guest quarters complete with grass roofs. The master bedroom features a balcony that overlooks the pool and lake. The tropical-themed home has it’s own private beach shoreline of Lake Texoma as the largest lake in the state of Oklahoma. Blake was born in Ada, Oklahoma that is not far from Lake Texoma. Blake enjoys the tropical feel of vacationing, he decided to bring a bit of that to the heartland and added several palm trees on the property. The all-white tropical home features aqua blue doors and shutters and a great view of the pool and lake.
Next, we take a look at Blake’s Oklahoma ranch property that is just a 1 hour drive from the Lake House and 5 minutes from Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
Blake Shelton’s Oklahoma Ranch Property (Ten Point Ranch)
The ranch is just outside of the small town of Tishomingo, Oklahoma with a reported population of less than 4,000 residents. Blake has called Tishomingo his home for over a decade (after moving from Nashville), and his ranch is an impressive 1,382-acres acre property with a house, horse barn and shed to store his tractor. Blake is an avid outdoors-man and enjoys hunting, fishing, planting crops, and riding horses. The ranch provides plenty of space do be outdoors and do everything he loves. Gwen Stefani has grown to love the area and enjoys riding horses and escaping the Los Angeles Paparazzi. Blake even planted Gwen her very own wildflower patch, which Shelton prepared for her with his tractor.
Blake’s restaurant and attached “Dog House” music/dance venue is located 214 W. Main in Tishomingo, OK. The small town is close to both the Lake House and the Ten Point Ranch. The Ten Point ranch is currently listed for sale since around 2017, for $4.7M. This appears to be a sign that Blake plans on spending more time at the Texoma shore Lake House. The house on the ranch has 4 bedrooms and 2 baths and is more of a hunting property versus Blake’s Texoma Shore lake property that has plenty of housing for over 20 guests.
Here is a description of the Ten Point ranch from the Property Real Estate listing:
Description of Ten Point Ranch Listed for $4.7M
“This spectacular 1382 +/- acre sporting ranch is one of the best in Oklahoma, only 2.5 hrs. from Dallas, Texas and Oklahoma City, Okla. This ranch is outfitted for the serious hunters and has been managed for years for hunting. This world class ranch offers a spacious 2,150 +/- sq. ft. four bedroom, 2 bath barndominium home, a two-stall horse barn, and a 1,440 sq. ft metal implement shed. The Ranch has over 30/- acres of established plots for waterfowl hunting. There is an additional 100 acres of high fence, all strategically placed on the Ranch.
The ranch provides great hunting for deer, hogs and turkey. Additional regional recreational opportunities include excellent trout fishing on scenic Blue River and striper fishing on Lake Texoma. Lake Texoma is less than a mile from the ranch and has tremendous crappie, bass and striper fishing. The Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge is across Highway 22 from the Ranch. The Refuge has fabulous birding and hiking opportunities. For the boating enthusiast Lake Texoma is a spectacular lake for water skiing and boating”.
Blake an Gwen’s Kids
Blake Shelton’s music video for “I’ll Name the Dogs” has cameo appearances from Gwen’s kids including Kingston, Zuma, and their cousin, Stella all dancing around. In the music video, Blake plays a wedding singer at the marriage ceremony of an elderly couple. Zuma and Kingston are the cousin are briefly shown all dressed up, and dancing at the wedding celebration.
Family Life in Los Angeles
Gwen finally sold her prior Los Angeles home she once shared with ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale. Gwen purchased the home in 2006; with 15,000 square feet, seven beds, and seven and a half baths. Her prior house featured a pool, fitness center, guest house, and tennis court. Gwen Stefani house had been on the market for quite some time, initially listed for $45 million. In early October 2019, Variety reported that comedian Sebastian Maniscalco had purchased the home for $21.65 million.
Gwen’s Former House
Blake Shelton spends plenty of time in Los Angeles every year. When he is in the city, Shelton and Stefani spend time with the three boys: Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo. They often attend Stefani’s church in Los Angeles as well as taking trips to visit her parents. With no children of his own, Blake seems to enjoy playing the role of step-dad Several news sources have published that Blake and Gwen have purchased a Los Angeles property and are renting a Los Angeles home until their property is ready to move in. Our research has not found any photos or confirmation of the Los Angeles properties. We look forward to the next chapter of Gwen and Blake’s adventures with her three sons.
Watch this quick Instagram clip where Blake professes his Love for Gwen Stefani:
Remember to share this video update with other Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani fans.

Hi. I'm hoping you can help me understand. This is my first year going through the draft and trades and its about to kill me. There are so many rumors I don't know what to believe. My biggest concern right now is Aho. I keep seeing different things. It seems that according to Don Waddell that everything with Aho is moving along but I keep seeing reports that the Canes offered 6 million a year for 8 years. I have read that isn't very good for a player like Aho. How reliable are these rumors?
I’m glad you came to me for help thank you ❤️
It can get crazy!! A lot of people like to spread rumors or talk about the worst case scenario or they talk about what they think is going to happen and it’s just a big mess! Don’t listen to them!!!!
Your biggest, most reliable source is honestly going to be the Canes news page. They’ve wrote several times about what is actually going on behind the scenes or what they think is going to happen.
On Twitter, the main people you need to follow is Sara Civian, Michael Smith and Mike Maniscalco. They won’t blow things out of proportion and they actually know what’s going on. Obviously there is other people and writers you can follow but I find these the most helpful and reliable.
As for Sebastian, don’t sweat it, don’t worry about it, we’re going to sign him. They’re just negotiating and people are impatient so they’re making it seem more dramatic than what it needs to be I promise. As for the price, Waddell said they’re not far off from what he’s asking and what they’re offering so I’m positive what ever he gets is close to what he’s asking for.
