Thirteen Untranslatable Words

I’ve been doing some research […] and I’ve found some of the most amazing untranslatable words in the non-American speaking world. Here they are, in no spectacular order.

1. Mamihlapinatapei

This is one of the first words I learned about as an untranslatable word. It’s spoken by using an ancient and primitive language from Chile, in Tierra del Fuego. (Tierra del Fuego, by the way, means “Fire, Having Land/Earth/Dirt, Which Land/Earth/Dirt Is Being This Land/Earth/Dirt”.) The word, mamihlapinatapei, is unfortunately untranslatable.

2. Toska

This is a Russian word. It means… uhhh… it’s sort of like… hm. Well it’s a cool meaning, but you have to know Russian to understand it.

3. Iktsuarpok

The Inuits only have one word for this, and therefore although we can’t know what this word means, we do know that iktsuarpok is neither important nor familiar to the Inuits, otherwise they would have 231 words for it.

4. Shlimazl

This Yiddish word is often used next to schlemiel, both of them meaning something related to each other. The meaning is something close to… uhhhh… dammit this article is hard to write.

5. Friolero

No idea. Looks Spanish.

6. The

You might recognize this word, but there is no English translation of it. It is similar to a and an but it has a nuanced meaning that those two words just don’t quite capture.

7. Tartle

Scots talk funny, don’t they?

8. Torschlusspanik

Germans use this word. You might notice it has the word panik in it which is close to English panic but those other parts mean some other sorts of things.

9. Wabi-Sabi

In Japanese culture, you have… there are these… ummm… It rhymes with itself. Like that other untranslatable word Oingo Boingo.

10. Hwæt

This Old English word used to be English when English wasn’t yet old. Once it became old, hwæt became impossible to use.

11. Cafuné

Not even speakers of Portuguese from Portugal can understand this word. Only speakers of Portuguese from Brazil know what it means.

12. L’appel du vide

There’s no single English word that captures the full meaning of this French phrase. The French have one translation of it that they have shared with us (the call of the void), but they have recently given it another more interesting meaning that they are keeping from us.

13. Schadenfreude

This weird German word roughly translates into the English word, schadenfreude.

Hey so I don't want to be the one to break this new on here, but it isnt doing much good on my conciousness rn and I really need to let this out.

TW: Sexual Harassment

This article was just published by rolling stone, and I wanted to gently put my thoughts on the matter down.

I am very very shocked and quite upset by this story. This is awful, and it has immeasurably soured my day.

Firstly, I am not going to, nor can I in any capacity, speak to the validity of any of this story. In truth, no one can until a court decision has been reached.

That said, I would like to voice my thoughts on this (very delicate) situation.

1. This situation, and the story told by this article, has a lot of moving parts and unknown variables.

2. I don't think this case can be treated the same way that many similar ones are, if we are to consider the individuals involved. This seems very out of character for Elfman, and while that's no excuse, everything I know of his history and previous behavior makes me question the extent of the allegations. Additionally, his apparent cooperation with the investigation/article is something to further question.

3. This article, while very factual and information-driven, is substantiated mostly by personal sources on the side of Abadi. Not to judge for or against, just something I noted.

4. I am shocked and it feels like my world is crashing down. The closest thing I've ever had to an idol is now embroiled in this and may in fact be guilty. This is tough. Danny Elfman marks, for me, my first moments of self acceptance and celebration of my neurodivergency as well as a plethora of other things. I feel an incredibly close connection to him and to Oingo Boingo, much more than any other band.

5. Again, I can't say if any of this is true or not based on the contents of this article. I am not going on a witch hunt, nor will I aggressively defend a celebrity. I am not choosing a side definitively, and I encourage others to reserve judgement as well.

My immediate bias is on the side of Danny, and amittedly, a part of me can rationalize the allegations if I try. HOWEVER, I SHOULDN'T DO THIS.

I, and we as a fandom, have to remember that this is a real situation, with a real victim. This fandom romanticises and sexualizes this man very much, and I do worry that with that bias it will be difficult to see both sides of the situation.

I am not looking to discuss or deliberate the merits of either side's stories. None of us were in that room, and without moderation I do not want to see this space turn into a 4chan forum.

I am so sorry if you found out this way. As a fan, this breaks my heart.

The story here is that Medea was giving a day off to see her favorite baseball team; the San Francisco Giants, play professionally in Egypt for the first time, and is taking the Oingo Boingo bros. with her.

Unfortunately the game got cancelled on the day it was supposed to start due to pressures of the Cold War(it's the late 1980s), this caused Medea throw a bit of a hissy fit until Vanilla Ice kicked her out, telling her to do something else with her day off.

Medea tried to find something to do in Cairo, only to find that most places close on Fridays(it's a holy day), leaving her with literally nothing to do in the city except visiting historical monuments.

When she went to the Pyramids, she finds that a Giza cafe is still opened and uses it as an excuse to binge drink, while getting plastered, Medea sees a couple of customers playing poker and decides to join in, believing she had nothing to lose since her exile, only to end up winning a few rounds before returning home with lots of cash, a smile, and a filled void.

She returns to the cafe the next day to play more poker, having to skip work for it, Medea finally got the hang of gambling and the rush of winning, it was all going well until she caught the attention of a certain gambler who owns the bar.

Intrigued by her, he invited her to play a few rounds with him, she was skeptical as to why he looked familiar, but decides to play with him, under the condition that she bet her soul for his money, surprisingly she lost and ends up giving up her money, but was met with refusal.

The man reminds her that she had bet her soul, and now she will pay the price for it with his Stand. In horror, Medea realizes too late that the man in question is T. D'Arby's older brother while his Stand, [Osiris], takes her soul and puts it into his coin collection.

While this was happening, T. D'Arby followed Medea to the cafe after hearing about the money she earned and had the sneaking suspicion about where she got it, that suspicion was confirmed when he sees her empty husk at the table and proceeds to kick his brother's butt until he gave up her soul.

Afterwards, she thanked the younger brother for saving her life, asking why he'd bother doing it, he simply replied: "I don't wanna do your chores."

Okay, I'm posting this in SLIGHT defense of Danny Elfman (And not about the harassment accusation).

I am very annoyed when people use the song "Little Girls" as proof of his wrong doing.

"Little Girls" is a call-out song to shame sexual predators in Hollywood. The character is caught at the end of the song. The music video makes this more blatant. The character is NOT supposed to be sympathetic or likable.

Danny Elfman has repeatedly said that this is what the song is about, calling out and shaming sexual predators in positions of Hollywood. I can provide many interviews and documented sources where he said this.

Danny Elfman went through an experimental phase while in Oingo Boingo where he wrote about awful and terrifying people.

Here's "Helpless" which is from the point of view of a serial killer on death row, who murdered several people, including his own mother.

I am PRETTY certain Danny Elfman did not kill his own mother, just like I don't think Freddie Mercury shot anyone (He has three different songs where he talks about pulling a trigger and someone dying, which could be a metaphor for accidentally spreading AIDS but the songs were written before Freddie was diagnosed so likely not.)

Disclaimer: I don't actually like the song "Little Girls." In fact it's the one Oingo Boingo song I kind of hate. Yes, the creep gets caught at the end of the song but it triggers a bit of a squick in me.

David Bowie did similar (playing a killer) in the song "Please, Mr. Gravedigger" where he kills the gravedigger because he tells him what he did and he's there to get rid of some left over evidence.

I am pretty sure twenty-something David Bowie didn't murder a little girl and a grave digger...
