today's song: 13th july, 2024 - 'New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down' by LCD Soundsytem (2007)

'genius' description: According to Paste Magazine’s Bo Moore: The close to 2007’s Sound of Silver, ‘New York I Love You’ is Murphy’s love letter to his home. At once a ballad of love and hatred, the slow build exhibits the same faltering-but-beautiful vocality observed on ‘I Can Change’. Gradually developing momentum into a tumultuous climax, just like the city, the song isn’t perfect, but it’s better that way. The hook, also the title of the song, summarizes Murphy’s love-hate relationship with New York, which is where we imagine he spent a lot of time since he was raised in New Jersey. Murphy admits that NY may still have the appeal of opportunity and endless new people to meet, but for him it’s hard to see the good in NY anymore. This song is his message on what’s wrong with NY, though he reminds us that it’s a personal one.

personal thoughts: nothing quite beats the build up in this song, it is so special, and filled to the brim with passion, and disillusionment. this was the song that got me into LCD soundsystem, and thank god for that. really a highlight on the whole record (next to Us v Them!).

Sound at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013)

A little collection of sounding things I encountered...

Epic sound installation at the Polish pavilion in Giardini by Konrad Smoleński, titled Everything Was Forever, Until it Was No More. A huge bell, a stacked soundsytem. Some performances too!

The SS Hangover - I was lucky to catch this gorgeous fishing boat sailing off from Arsenale with a melancholic brass band on board. A project by Ragnar Kjartansson.

Ok, this is very video, but I loved this - moving, haunting, affecting sound in Richard Mosse's The Enclave, in the Irish Pavillion in town.

My best friend's rescheduled birthday party was this weekend. It was great. A few people were not able to make it, but it was the perfect amount of people tbh. I didn't get overwhelmed, and I actually got to talk to everyone. It was 10 people + Aries and I. And it only took me an hour to clean up afterward.

There was a woman my friend and I met at a queer event, and she was a bit of a wild card. We didn't know her that well, but my interactions with her have all been sunshiney and she's ridiculously cute, so I felt confident we'd get along.

Anyway, I had my playlist going and she said "wait wait wait is this LCD Soundsytem? Whoever's playlist this is is amazing btw...New Order, the Cure...." and I was like "Yes. Hello. 👀👀👀👀 Let us discuss."

She loves New Romantic fashion and New Order and oh god, oh hell yeah. She is the only person around my age that I have met that I have been able to drop the term 'New Romantic' and have them instantaneously know what I mean.

She's going to come to goth night with me!! Not the soonest one, but another in the future. I am so happy. Having someone to talk to about your weird fixations is really nice.

I thought I’d be ok missing out on the Verboten festival but it turns out, I wasn’t. FOMO got me because of Light Asylum. I am so glad I went.

I was at the rail for Light Asylum and got to dance with the singer of Creux Lies. Also discovered Hallows!

The ending act wasn’t my fav, but hey, whatever. Everyone has their own tastes, and 3 out of 4 is pretty rad.

I REALLY can’t justify the other days considering I’m going to the most expensive show of my life next Friday. LCD Soundsytem better blow my tits right off.
