Happy Monday y’all! Have you ever watched the movie Sound of Music? I watched this movie as a kid and when I found out that I was in the same country that the Hill scene was filmed, I HAD to ride there. Isn’t this cool? The hill has a cute picnic area where you can hang out, as well as a looking glass where the Trapp family escaped the Nazi’s. This is one of the first nostalgic places from my childhood I visited on this expedition. I don’t typically visit places from movies, but this was pretty cool to me. Have you been to this Basilica before? Have you seen this Basilica before? Well, maybe you have and don't recognize it (seen it that is). After all the movie came out about 55 years ago and though you may have seen this scene, it wasn't a major feature of the movie - despite the beauty of it and the wedding that took place. Where is this? The Basilica of St Michael, Mondsee, Austria (about 1/2 hour east of Salzburg). And when would you have seen it? In the movie: The Sound of Music. Of course, movie locations rarely track logically to the story of the movie. After all, why would the VonTrapps have gone to Mondsee when they lived in Salzburg? But I speculate on this. Instead, I'm sure this basilica was chosen because it looked good on film. And I will say that it makes for a nice trip out of Salzburg to see some of the Austrian countryside as part of The Sound of Music Tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. . Oct 2018 . I found these two as the most impressive sculptures during my visit to Mirabell Palace. These are located actually at Mirabell Gardens, located behind the Palace in downtown Salzburg. There isn’t much to say about the gardens, but they are rather delightful. All geometric and full of statues of obscure figures from Greek or Roman mythology. I’m sure they are even more lovely when it isn’t pouring rain and when it isn’t freezing outside. The gardens were used in scenes during the “Do Re Mi” song sequence in the Sound of Music–so if you are a huge Sound of Music buff, make sure you stop by here!
