hi copper!!! this is a fantastic question!

so obviously typical irl rats have far shorter lifespans than the average irl tortoise. according to google (yes, be awed by my spectacularly in-depth wealth of research) the average pet rat lives between 2-4 years ish, and the oldest on record lived to be about 7. meanwhile, an African spurred tortoise (Splinter's species) averages more around a 50ish year lifespan in captivity, tho is suspected to possibly exceed 75 or more in the wild.

Now, the mutation does give us a lot of wiggle room for playing with these numbers. For the rat sons boys, id say their natural lifespan probably clocks in at about 45-55 years old? definitely not old by human standards, but not young young either. (though, its also important to note that the boys were exposed to the mutagen just days after being born.)

For Splinter, meanwhile, aging is slightly more complicated. He lived the vast majority of his life as a regular normal African spurred tortoise (well, non-mutated at least. there were perhaps some shenanigans of a more mystical variety going on before he was mutated, but thats a separate matter) He was about 70ish i think? when the boys were born and they were all exposed to the mutagen. so he is already distinctly an old man turtle papa. id guess he'd probably still have another eh lets say 25-30 years after his mutation. he could probably push it a little farther even with some mystic nonsense, but when push comes to shove id say his 'natural' post-mutation lifespan would put his death like a solid decade or two before his sons.

of course, the tricky part of the matter is that theres no way for Splinter to know any of this. theres no way for him to know how the mutation affected them all, or if it even affected them all in the same way. especially since the boys dont show many physical signs of mutation for the first few years, and just kinda look like normal rats, (albeit with a more human sort of intelligence) — what sort of health standard do you hold them to? what if they simply dont show external signs of sickness or old age anymore? how do you actually know if something is wrong?

for a while there Splinter is very worried that one of his babies will just essentially reach the end of their normal rat lifespan, fall and not get up again.

so mostly, he just tries to live in the moment, enjoying whatever time he does have with his little ones, taking each day as a gift <3

...that some things have changed (including some marigold ventures?) and Atlas May is like uh oh both lackadaisy & i are doomed, but if i set up my own death maybe only i'll be doomed and lackadaisy might have to shutter but perhaps more so on involved people's terms, such as mitzi being fine financially, but also if she thinks it's her fault that'll be good for maintaining my posthumous Image to her, perhaps she did some defrauding again? and i'll have mordecai, my trusted & effective gunman, be the one to fatally shoot me, & of course he doesn't want to, but it's Mere Work Ethic time, what's he gonna do besides argue at all maybe, ultimately refuse? (no) and he may hate it but he's not going to want to fully turn on mitzi or anything after because then what would have been the point

If my computer hadn't bested me in a battle of wits over whether I'm allowed to record internal audio, I'd love to have shared the process of making sound effects for The Dark Queen of Mortholme. Not because it's particularly good, but because there's perhaps a certain charm in how audio gets made by a person who doesn't understand it whatsoever.

Still, we can make do with a graph and some text. The best way to convey the audio medium. Here's the bits that make up the Queen' defeat sound:

I typically record & tweak my SFX in Audacity, but for effects with a lot of layering on precise timings I go into GarageBand. It has a nifty feature where you can import a movie (or a screen recording of gameplay) into the timeline.

For the Queen's phase two form to sound inhuman, I slap a lot of effects on the recordings. I don't know what any of them do so it's pure experimentation.

For an even more otherworldly quality I made two signature synths for her (the green tracks on the image). Layered under most of her attack SFX, "Mortholme Monster" is a horrendous shrill screeching I've probably damaged my ears over while listening it on repeat in an attempt to make it more horrendous. "Queen Move" is a comparatively boring looping tone that plays when her body floats around, to signify movement now that she no longer has feet to make footsteps with.

I use Tunefish as a synthetiser; I don't know if there's synth software that's better suited for sound effects over music making. Playing with synths in GarageBand has certainly been adding a certain melodic quality to my SFX. I quite like it, although it's possible they'll clash with the game's music once that's done... (If so, I could always redo them using frequencies that match the scale, I guess?)

Finally, when the sound effect is later put into the game engine, it'll gain added reverb to feel more like it echoes in the large throne room.

genuinely want to physically attack youtubers who put the loud woody pencil scratching sound effects over videos of them drawing with a fucking electronic tablet, i hate the sound it makes my skin crawl and it was also completely unnecessary
