At first, I only wanted to design a character who could save people from a distance, so I thought of three potential options: a professional soul guide, a linker, and an embalmer. After careful consideration, I chose the embalmer. In order to break people's stereotyped image of the middle-aged and old, gloomy and weird, the image of young people is adopted. In order to highlight the characteristics of the character, a braid is added. Two versions of clothing (black suit and white overalls) embody professional dignity. Considering that the overalls are inconvenient for running, the previous version was finally selected. Due to being in contact with the dead for a long time, he was not good at communicating with the living, and had a mild social phobia.

this is gonna take some time and context to explain, because reki kawahara has no chill and im unironically working with over 60 novels here (because yes sao and aw are the same setting a couple decades apart)

so first off: the accel world anime, unlike the sword art online one, is actually good. that being said, it also barely covers anything of the novels

like if you only ever watched the accel world anime, you do in fact have no way of knowing what the story is actually about, and crucially how it all works

so here goes, spoilers ahead

so acceleration is weird right? how could you possibly speed up a brain that much?

answer: you can't!

and yet, they seem to do it regardless

now there's actually a precedent for this exact kind of acceleration in-universe: alicization; the underworld's half-millenium worth of history in the span of mere months irl

it's soul translation

neurolinkers are tiny portable soul translators. and how do they accelerate?

by making a fluctlight copy, of the "photons in carbon nanotubes"-kind, which can think much faster than any mere meat-brain. every time someone accelerates, what actually happens is that their fluctlight copy gets accelerated, and then afterwards their meat brain gets resynchronised with it

now here's the funny thing

those copies are saved externally

they're basically there permanently, in fact, regardless of what happens to the meat-original

and the sheer inherent advantage of just always having *time*

like this setting is deceptive in how normal it seems on the surface

it's deeply unsettling scifi underneath it
