What a shame… you always had such beautiful hair
#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#seeds of the red lotus#original character#sotrl haya#found this about 90% finished in one of my Procreate folders and decided to finish it off#apparently we’re on a RL siblings roll lately#oh Haya. Haya Haya Haya…#what can I even say about her?#she’s very high on the list of the worst OCs we have ever created. she’s truly a vile human being with 0 redeeming qualities#and yet.. here she’s just fourteen. lost and confused and grieving#a little brother on her hands and no one to turn to. to lean on. no one to take care of her#she’s a child. she isn’t supposed to have to be the adult because there’s no one else to take up the mantle#she’s a victim of awful circumstances who nevertheless had the CHOICE not to perpetuate them. but she did#and that’s why what she did is unforgivable#but that’s a talk for future Haya. how about we focus on this Haya for now?#I imagine this takes place at some point not long after her parents die#she looks more like Siamak than Afarin but she did inherit Afarin’s hair. it reminds her of her every time she looks in the mirror#and after a while she can’t take it any longer#so she stumbles into the kitchen late at night. pulls scissors out of the drawer and goes wild#but it doesn’t bring any relief. she looks at her curls scattered all over the floor and she just feels worse#the scissors fall out of her hand and it takes everything in her not to cry because Ghazan might wake up and hear her#so she just stands there in the dark kitchen. feeling utterly alone in the world#and she truly. truly is. isn’t she? she’s alone. an orphaned girl no one will ever care about again. how awfully sad is that?#anyway. moving in before I start crying. you know what I just noticed?#the way I drew this implies the scissors fell out of her left hand. meaning likely she was using her left hand. meaning she’s left handed#just like Suiren is. does that mean Suiren inherited that FROM Haya? that it’s yet another similarity they share? well it wasn’t intentional#but now that I’ve though of it… yes. yes that is exactly the case. and I’m close to biting into a wall because of it#did I ever mention that Suiren is left handed before? I can’t remember. but I decided she was +- five years ago. so it’s always been canon

oooh cruel and painful hair cutting scene?
Okay, so this one requires some context (actually, all of them do, because everything I write is very far removed from canon and is OC-centric. Not my fault LoK canon sucks for the most part and my own characters are much more fun to play around with). In my main AU, Seeds of the Red Lotus, my Mingzan child OCs were left with Haya, Ghazan's older sister, when their parents left for the South Pole to kidnap Korra 13 years prior to the show's events. But what they didn't account for is that Haya was still fucking pissed at Ghazan for leaving her when he ran away as a teenager, so she began seeing his kids as proof of him abandoning her for the RL and for that swamp rat (a.k.a Ming-Hua), and started taking out that unprocessed anger, grief and prejudice on these poor innocent children :(
Suiren, Mingzan's eldest, was generally extremely sensitive to a lot of things even before due to her autism, but obviously it was only exacerbated by Haya's abuse. One of Haya's methods to get Suiren to maintain eye contact was to pull at her hair, which led to her realising hair pulling got Suiren to behave, and eventually it was done so much that it developed into a full on trigger and a foolproof way to get Suiren to dissociate as a defence mechanism :/ And that's bad enough on its own, but a side effect is that now even the smallest tug at Suiren's hair triggers her, even the ones that occur during hair brushing, so now she neglects it which only makes Haya even more mad at her for her hair being all messy and tangled. She said that if Suiren didn't pull herself together and sort it out, she'd just chop all her hair off, which Suiren can't allow because it's one of the last connections she has to her mother.
Now, in actual canon, said haircut never happened, but almost a year ago now I was feeling particularly evil and decided to write a small AU about what would happen if it did (yep. A whole separate AU to torture an 8 year old child more than I already do. Idk what that says about me as a person but it can't be good). I then never finished it because my mental health is a little bitch that won't let me write, but I really want to delve into the aftermath of said event so hopefully sharing a part now will give me the push I need to continue once things stabilise a little. So now, after that obnoxiously long explanation, a snippet of the fic itself (under the cut, because this is already long enough):
(TW for child abuse, dissociation and general awfulness)
Suiren kept fighting even as Haya pinned her in place. She didn’t care if it would result in more punishment later on, nothing could be as bad as what Haya was about to do if Suiren didn’t manage to get away. At one point, she almost managed to bite at Haya’s hand, which earned her a slap to the face.
“It’s like you’re trying to make this harder for yourself, Girl. We could have been done already if you just stayed fucking still!”
She moved her hand from Suiren’s shoulder to grab a strand of hair next to her face, pulling slightly. Suiren despised the involuntary freeze of her entire body. Haya brought up the scissors, slowly, and measured out the length, stopping at just above Suiren’s chin.
Suiren forced herself to meet Haya’s eyes, trying one last time to get through to her, get her to show mercy just this once. She wanted to say something but her tongue wouldn’t obey.
For just a moment, it almost seemed like it worked. Haya’s eyes widened, she stared down at Suiren with an almost horrified expression, her hand, the one holding the scissors, shook.
Then, she blinked and it was gone.
She drew her eyebrows together in focus as she made the first cut.
Suiren watched the hair fall onto her chest in what felt like slow motion. She didn’t want to look at it, to be reminded that this was all real and not yet another nightmare, but couldn’t force herself to turn away,
Haya grabbed another strand.
‘Please,’ Suiren wanted to scream, ‘You’ve made your point. I’ll behave now, I’ll be good, you don’t need to do this. Please let me go.’
But Haya would never listen to her, she’d only be wasting her breath. Tears burned at her eyes and she struggled to breathe around the lump in her throat as Haya kept cutting, more and more of her hair falling to the floor. Having gained confidence in her actions, Haya increased her speed.
Something inside Suiren, some persistent sense of spite that somehow hadn’t died off yet, urged her to keep fighting. Haya had her securely pinned down, ensuring the wouldn’t move, but when had that even been enough to stop her?
As Haya, with her guard seemingly down, moved to the hair on the other side of Suiren’s face, Suiren gathered all her strength to try and push her off again.
All she succeeded at was getting her right cheekbone nicked by the blade, a result of turning her head too suddenly at precisely the wrong time.
However small, the spot where the scissors broke her skin hurt more than most bruises. A single drop of blood tickled her cheek as it rolled down it. Haya stopped and grabbed her by the chin to inspect the damage.
“Now look what you’ve done,” she hissed, then forcibly turned Suiren’s face to grab more of her hair and pull harder than she ever had before.
The last thing Suiren registered was Haya struggling to cut through a thick, knotted, matted clump.
She faintly heard the non-stop snipping, too quick to ensure the cuts would be even, felt the fallen strands against her skin, but the welcoming blankness of her mind pushed it all away. She shut her eyes tight and tried with everything left in her to imagine a place far away from Haya’s house, where she would be safe, where no one would ever touch her again.
She didn’t know how much time passed, but eventually, Haya let her go.

You ever have your narrative haunted by a character who isn’t even yours
#I’ve been thinking about lien-hua non-stop for the past two days send help#like… it’s true. she does haunt the sotrl and everything sotrl-adjacent narratives#the pair of tragic sisters. the grief. her death is both the catalyst and the butterfly effect for all following events#P’Li would be a different person. Suiren and Midori wouldn’t be left with Haya. the RL might not have even gone after Korra#because Lien-Hua went through the same thing as P’Li and the two of them would rationalise better together#I don’t think Lien would trust Unalaq at all. and her distrust is different from. for example. Ming-Hua’s natural snark#they might’ve payed more attention#and even if they didn’t and still left. again sotrl wouldn’t happen#Lien would be left with the girls and she’d seek out Zhi for help so it’d be closer to UtOS#and Midori would be a slightly different person too for a… different reason#I love Lien. she’s my beloved child but that’s why this story is a tragedy. she has to die. nothing would happen as it did if she hadn’t#she died and now she haunts the narrative#and it’s not even intentional bc when I came up with Suiren and Midori’s characters or sotrl’s storyline I hadn’t read LaF yet#well. I had. I read what was there before Kat continued it#but I didn’t really pay attention to Lien-Hua’s existence. like yeah. she was there and then she died and now P’Li’s the way she is#back then she didn’t influence the way I thought about my girls in any way#compared to now#now the way P’Li sees her nieces is forever shadowed by the loss of her sister#both as kids and adults. whether they’re happy or fighting#the first makes her remember her childhood before it was so abruptly ended#the latter makes her wonder if she and Lien-Hua would’ve ended up the same way#there is a tinge of resentment there. she wants to see her nieces as they are. not as what they parallel#she knows her sister is long gone. she’ll never see her again unless she wants to go into the fog of lost souls again#but the spirits can be as merciful as they are cruel#once. a girl was powerless to stop her sister’s death. 11 years later. the girl grew up and holds her newborn niece. filled with deja vu#because yes. Midori is Lien-Hua’s reincarnation#she was always so unexplainably drawn to her auntie. much more than Suiren was#so fond of the sun on her skin and spices in her food and the glow of a fire that it’s hard to believe she has no FN blood in her#she gets strange dreams of people she can’t know but feels like she does. of an oddly familiar red eyed girl. of a long time in a dark cell#losing her parents. Haya’s cruelty. her sister’s protection fill her with dread she swears she felt before. Why did it all happen again???

First posted piece of 2024 featuring Ghazan’s older sister Haya, take 2!!
#a.k.a the og version was bothering me so I completely redrew her eyes and added more shadows to make her facial features more pronounced#gonna just copy over my og tags bc I can’t be bothered to come up with new ones#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original character#seeds of the red lotus#sotrl haya#god... like on one hand yes. she's an awful person. she abused her brother's kids for 16 years#left lasting mental and emotional scars on them to the point that even years after they last see her they're still recovering#even after all the bruises have healed her voice is still in their heads. fear of her still dictates so many of their actions#someone like her doesn't deserve any amount of sympathy. nor after everything she's done#but on the other... the person who did all that is haya in her 30s and 40s. here she's just 14#she just had her whole world shattered in a matter of weeks. she's left with nothing and no one but an empty house and her 5yo brother#she has no one to turn to. no shoulder to cry on. apart from losing her parents she had to quit school and stop hanging out with her friend#sh ehad to abandon any hobbies she might have had. I imagine she was quite like suiren and midori used to be. curious and intelligent#and very keen on trying new things. she had to leave all that behind to work day and night while earning only barely enough to scrape by on#just enough for them to survive. to keep the house. to be clothed and fed. there was no room for treats or luxuries of any kind#how many dresses did she cut up to use as material for ghazan's clothes? how many nights did she go hungry just so he could eat?#and she can't even cry about it. not while he's around anyway because she's supposed to be strong for him.#I imagine she often cried after putting ghazan to bed. just out of sheer helplessness. from how exhausted she was#she cried herself to sleep every night and pulled herself back together every morning#tied her hair back with her mother's kerchief and went straight to work anywhere that would hire her. working until she could barely stand#all for him. I'm not excusing her actions in any way but I understand why she was overcome with resentment after he left her#running away without as much as a goodbye. after everything she had done for him. spitting in her face would have hurt less#so when he resurfaced over a decade later to dump his bastard children on her it didn't take long for all that resentment to find an outlet#and the rest is history... fuck. thinking about her teenage and ya self always makes me cry. she was so much like suiren it's heartbreaking#well. the only reason suiren is like this now is bc of her. but yk what they say. the history book on the shelf is always repeating itself#anyway. I'm really glad I took the time to redraw this. I'm so much happier with it now. she actually looks like a young girl now#this really hits different considering that I straight up killed her in my latest au... granted she was in her 40s there. but still

In another world, fate was just a little bit kinder
#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original characters#sotrl midori#sotrl haya#seeds of the red lotus#look I was feeling extremely emotional recently. and thought about how different life would be for my OCs if Haya was good#and I'm a sucker for AUs like that. it's spiritually healing. so of course I had to draw something for it#I originally wanted to draw a companion piece for suiren too but then thought it was just rehashing the idea#and I draw Suiren a lot already anyways so decided to just take the excuse to draw adorable little Midori and run with it#I have quite a few thoughts about an AU like this too. it starts out like sotrl does. haya gives them the cold shoulder and is kinda mean#but then the news of the rl's imprisonment reach gaoling. haya is shellshocked at first. distances herself and sends the girls to their room#pretends she can't hear the crying. but really she wants to cry too because as estranged as they are. ghazan is still her little brother#she indulges late that night after she think the girls are asleep. deep buried trauma from losing her parents resurfaces#but then she hears footsteps behind her. Midori is awake. haya wants to be angry at first but finds she has no energy to#they talk a little. the warm glow of candlelight catches midori's eyes and their grey shade turns gold. she looks so much like him#haya realises Midori is even younger than ghazan was when they lost their parents. suiren is half the age haya herself was#no one cared for her and ghazan back then. she won't let history repeat itself#so she reaches for midori. heart skipping a beat when she lights up slightly. and takes her into her arms#holds her close as midori hugs her back. if she closes her eyes it almost feels like she’s 14 again. holding her brother#she swears then that she’ll be as good of a guardian to these girls as she can so they don’t end up like their parents did. like haya did#it’s a long road to unlearn her bitterness but she tries her best. it’s easier with midori who soaks in affection like a sponge#Midori’s happiness is infectious. with suiren it’s much more difficult bc the prejudice Haya holds against the swamp are still there#as is the hatred for their mother. it isn’t until the townspeople start calling Suiren a swamp rat does haya snap#she no longer cares about getting alienated from the community that barely welcomed her anyway. she will defend her niece from them all#it’s the first time she calls suiren her niece. they talk too and Haya apologises for favouring Midori and starts working on fixing it#their life together isn’t perfect. the townspeople side eye them. they can’t afford bending teachers. Haya still has to bite her tongue#but it’s so much better than what could have been had Haya let her pain consume her and started to take it out on the girls. they’re happy#I have so much more to say and theorise about when it comes to this au but alas. tag limits are a thing. so I’m leaving this here

Rough concept of 14-year-old Haya, which I’d call a quick sketch if I hadn’t spent almost two hours on it
Alternatively: Photos taken moments before disaster (read as: a few months before her parents died)

Young Haya WIP ft. backstory rambles in the tags
#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original character#seeds of the red lotus#sotrl haya#she’s actually really fun to draw#both young and at her age in sotrl/utos#which is very ironic considering who she is as a person#well. who she will become as a person#she hasn’t yet. not at this point#knowing what she did makes it very hard to feel anything but hatred for her#but once upon a time she was a fourteen year old girl left with nothing but an empty house and a little brother on her hands#with no idea where to go from here#she dropped out of school so she could look after and provide for her brother#not like she could afford it on her own anyway#people who knew their parents talk a lot but say nothing at all. they offer condolences but no help#she works until her previously tender hands are now numb and rough with callouses#picking up any odd job she can get just to scrape together enough money to pay for the house and for food#her brother is barely five. she wants to let him mess around and play and have fun but can’t keep an eye on him if she does#he doesn’t see her as authority. she’s his big sister who’d ruffle his hair and buy him snacks on the way home from school#she’s not his mother but she tries desperately to fill that role. he doesn’t listen. she gets harsher#she hates herself for it but doesn’t know of another way. she just wants to keep him safe#the townspeople talk. they say the disease came from the swamp. their house is on the very edge. she’s wary of the far end of the backyard#her brother isn’t. the big trees lining the border of the swamp make for a superb playground. she knows. it was once her playground too#‘don’t go there’ she says. he doesn’t listen. he keeps going. one day he brings back the most sickly looking girl she’d ever seen#she has no compassion in her heart for the girl. only worry and graphic images in her mind of her brother wasting away from the disease#she can tell him to stop talking to the girl all she wants. it’s been four years and he’s grown immune to her attempts at parenting#that’s when she starts to yell. how else is she supposed to make him hear her? if he doesn’t listen he’ll get sick too. she can’t lose him#she doesn’t have anyone else

Here *throws random and actually much more important than I realised at first OC redesign at you after two and a half years since the OG*
Tumblr media
Meifeng, Ming-Hua’s cousin! I just randomly remembered that she exists while putting together my OC family tree and since the only art I have of her is… nearly 3 years old and mediocre at best, and Kat and I have recently spent so much time focusing on Red Lotus siblings, I thought “Hey, why not redraw her? Just because she’s a cousin and not a sister doesn’t make her any less special than Lien-Hua, Summiya, Aiza or Haya!” (On that note… Nia give someone a brother challenge. The only one that counts is Aiza and she’s only a brother half the time)
Some headcanons about her, both new and old (the old copy-pasted over and slightly edited to save everyone the second hand embarrassment of going to look at my old art), which will go under the cut because this has gotten LONG:
Old:
Older than Ming-Hua by around 10 years
Her dad is the older half-brother of Ming-Hua's mom who’s… not the most fond of their side of the family
Has never left her home in the Foggy Swamp Water Tribe
Master healer, specialises in children. Can't have any of her own because of the high pollution levels in the swamp which is why she puts all those motherly instincts into teaching and caring for kids
Got a scar on her leg while saving Ming-Hua from some wild swamp creature when the latter was a child who was absolutely convinced she could handle everything herself and never listened to anyone. Ming-Hua still insists she had everything under control that day
She tried to understand Ming-Hua's perspective on things, she really did, but ultimately tribe mentality and fear for her cousin’s safety, believing her not to be nearly as capable as she claims to be, won over
Attempted to stop Ming-Hua from running away but was, obviously, unsuccessful
Was the one consoling Nuying after Ming-Hua left
Helped Suiren learn waterbending and held genuine affection for the girl, although she ultimately refused when Suiren begged for the chance for her and Midori to escape from Haya and live with the tribe. She thought that while Suiren would most likely adjust well, Midori was simply too Gaoling to survive in a place as dark, damp and isolated as the Swamp. She regrets that decision every day since she found out Suiren became an assassin
Mourned Ming-Hua more than anyone else in the tribe when informed of her death
New:
Was the one who babysat Ming-Hua a lot when Nuying was going through one of her depressive episodes after Cadeo left, and Ming-Hua actually enjoyed spending time with her because she was a lot less overbearing and protective than her mother. Was the first person to start calling her Ming. Sometimes Ming-Ming, but Ming-Hua had a tendency to deliver a very hard kick to the shins every time she tried that
Never left Nuying’s side when she got sick in the years following Ming-Hua’s disappearance, no matter how much everyone, including her own father, told her to stay away, there’s nothing she can do to help her. In her final moments, Nuying was delirious with fever and called out for Ming-Hua. Meifeng didn’t have the heart to remind her that her daughter left so instead let her hair down, covered her own hand in water and told Nuying that she was “right here, mom. I’m right here” and stayed like that until Nuying passed
When Ming-Hua returned, Meifeng was the one to break the news to her. Later, when Ming-Hua asked how and when it happened, she couldn’t quite stop herself from snapping at her because she should have been there, Meifeng shouldn’t have had to pretend to be her so her mother could die without worrying about where her daughter was. Their relationship never really fully recovered after that fight
Still, she had met Suiren when she was little on the rare occasions when the Red Lotus passed through the Swamp and Ming-Hua chose to take her daughter to visit the tribe. She never met Midori, but she did see Ming-Hua pregnant with her once
Didn’t know about Ming-Hua’s imprisonment until an 11-year-old Suiren told her because world news don’t reach into the heart of the Swamp. She just thought they had decided to stop visiting. The news crushed her but… a part of her couldn’t help but go “you should have fucking listened to me when I told you to stay, then this wouldn’t have happened”
Her teaching Suiren waterbending involved mostly the basics of combat (she herself doesn’t know much of it since she’s a healer), plantbending and healing. Suiren reached her level of mastery and proficiency as well as figured out icebending on her own through sheer determination and spite (she’s so much like her mama 🥹🥹🥹)
Is the only one from the tribe Suiren had ever confessed to about being an assassin. That knowledge broke her heart and she spent all those years absolutely terrified that Suiren would meet Ming-Hua’s fate. When Suiren stopped visiting at one point (when she left for her mission to kill Kuvira, got injured, recovered at ATI, reunited with her parents, broke Kuvira out and started living with her, etc etc) she had assumed that it really did happen, until Suiren randomly showed up one day with Kuvira in tow (Meifeng did not approve bc of the whole spirit vine thing 😅)
Absolutely reunited with Ming-Hua at some point and it was an extremely emotional moment
Ripped Cadeo a new one when he suddenly appeared looking for his daughter after 45+ years after it became common knowledge that the RL are all alive and no longer wanted by the law
All in all… quite an interesting character that I really should do something with at some point, bc how come Ming-Hua’s family is the only one to get 0 attention in our discussions?? #justiceformeifeng2024
#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original character#seeds of the red lotus#sotrl meifeng#she doesn’t actually appear in any of my works. let alone sotrl. but she exists in that verse#and it’s the verse in which she plays the most major role so… that’s what her tag is now#anyway#it doesn’t seem that way but she really is a very emotionally conflicting character for me#because she was in the position to get Suiren and Midori away from Haya only four years after they were left with her#which would have left them with 75% less trauma#but she didn’t. coming up with quite a bullshit excuse#yes Midori would have missed the sun and everything but the swamp is still miles better than Haya#meifeng must have seen his skittish Suiren is. how skinny. how bruised#and yet she did nothing. yet another adult whose inaction led to tragedy#ugh. imagine a UtOS-style au where she does take them in and while the biggest obstacle is the trauma#Midori does have an insanely hard time adjusting#she’d probably spend most of her time by the giant tree because the sun gets through there#and maybe one day.. she’d run into one cranky old earthbender#who takes her up as a protege for old times’ sake#(and later hooks her up with her granddaughter– WHO SAID THAT??)#and Suiren would grow up to be a swamp warrior who decides to go after Kuvira when she harvests the spirit vines#I’m a fucking genius#Kat if you’re reading this. look at what fun new branch of the multiverse my brain just spat out!! come yell about it with me!!!#but okay. that is currently besides the point. back to meifeng#you know…#‘oh my art has really stagnated I feel like I haven’t improved in years’#BITCH THIS YOU?? look at the OG version and look at this and TELL ME you haven’t improved#my self hatred may be intense but even I can admit that I’ve gotten much better at drawing. in the character design department at least

Honestly, one of the main reasons I’m still dead set on finishing AIDIB is because once the AU progresses, we’ll eventually get to see badass bloodbender Suiren
Tumblr media
Bonus, Live Kuvira Reaction:
Tumblr media
#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original character#under the oak’s shade#sotrl suiren#technically the tag should be utos suiren but that’s make the tagging system difficult#so it’s staying under sotrl#and yeah yeah I know bloodbending isn’t quite so literal but I don’t have the skill to draw her using it on someone#it’s probably more bending the water inside a person and not actually their blood but shh. don’t ruin my fun#design notes time:#I’ve had this particular version of suiren in my head for maybe a year and a half now?#I wanted to really show the difference her happier upbringing in this AU made#she normally has no reason to have fur on her clothes bc she’s a swampbender. but I think she’d be inspired by ikiaq#somewhat of a parallel to midori wearing red bc of zhi. and her hair is braided bc it’s not such a sensitive spot anymore#haya did manage to turn it into a trigger but since it didn’t compound over 16 years it’s much easier for her to recover from it#I like to think zhi does it for her :) kat never gave me info about Zhi’s braiding abilities so I can do what I want#and it’s tied off with red ribbons bc red lotus rep. and also a bit of zhi’s influence#of course. a huge reason why I chose braids in particular is because young p’li has them in my design#and I’m very evil. apparently. but also I like how Suiren and midori both parallel both p’li and lien-hua#each of them has traits of both. but that’s something I’ve screamed about plenty of times already. so I will refrain#and yes she is wearing black fingerless gloves bc I think she should be allowed to act like the edgy 17 year old she is in this AU#essentially. Suiren in this au is a much healthier and happier version of herself#the trauma of losing her parents and those 6 months with haya still weigh on her. she still has very bad days#but she has adults who care about her and help her through it. here her child self isn’t dead by her own hand#she’s alive and often shines through because suiren got to remain a child for much much longer#she did lose her innocence. she did grow up quickly in some ways. but living with zhi and ikiaq and healing from all that#gave her her childhood back. she’s still a bit too overprotective over midori. still rather jumpy in her sleep#but her smiles and laughter aren’t fake. she lets people touch her hair. she acts much more her age#she’s happy with her life. and eventually. she becomes strong enough to bring their whole family back together again. she’s amazing

Best sisters, in any universe
(A.k.a: ever wonder what happens when a mermaid and a human have kids together?)

#Suiren looks bigger than a normal kid bc mermaids grow faster. also she gets the insane upper body strength to pull herself up from ghazan#my art#the legend of korra#original characters#seeds of the red lotus#sotrl suiren#sotrl midori#nia’s mermaid au#don’t ask how the biology of it all works idk and honestly idc#but yeah basic concept is that ming-hua’s a mermaid and ghazan’s a human and they fell in love and these two are the product of that#but since suiren in sotrl takes much more after her mom. in this au she was born basically indistinguishable from a normal mermaid#while midori is closer to her dad so she was born without a tail BUT with scales and gills and weird half-human half-fin ears and also fangs#the two were completely inseparable at children. always playing and swimming around together under their parents’ watchful eyes#they probably had a small shack in a secluded cavern near the water where ghazan and midori lived so that they’d be always close to-#ming-hua and suiren who can’t be too far away from the ocean. and so that the girls would get equal love and attention from both parents#of course that all changed once… something happened to ghazan and ming-hua#idrk what bc the avatar doesn’t exist and even if it did ming-hua can’t really go after her can she#well SOMETHING HAPPENS and the girls are left alone. Midori is presumed to be human and placed with haya. no one knows about suiren#Haya knows full well of her brother’s… endeavours and forces midori to hide everything she got from her mother. scaring her with stories-#-of scientists who’d wanna dissect her or smth. she knows about renny but chooses not to acknowledge her existence#midori spends all her free time at the abandoned pier talking to her sister but she doesn’t swim anymore#suiren is taken in by the other merpeople but they don’t like her bc she ‘carries the poisonous song in her throat like her serpent mother’#as my good friend said. basically she’s a siren and everyone thinks she’s a monster born for murder and destruction so she’s an outcast#‘that wretched halfling is an omen of death and will doom us all’ that wretched halfling is currently singing to her sister to calm her down#but as the years go by Suiren and Midori talk less and less bc they think it’d be better for the other that way#look no one said aus I make have to be happy#oh also I find it hilarious how suiren insults kuvira by calling her a biped bc… renny darling#bold words from someone who’s half biped#yeah she hasn’t seen her father in 16 years and she and midori have long since drifted apart but she’s still half human lmao#we all know renny is bad at insults but come on. at least pick something that doesn’t also technically apply to you too

What if Suiren and Midori inherited their paternal grandmother’s curlier hair?
#or maybe someone just needed an excuse to draw these two in their underwear. who’s to say??#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#original characters#seeds of the red lotus#sotrl suiren#sotrl midori#last art piece of the year :) feeling kinda emotional over it#idk what my obsession with hair as a storytelling device is but here we are#it seems like such a small change but it really carries a lot of weight#for starters curlier hair is harder to care for. which means Suiren’s issues with brushing will be even more pronounced#but also.. Haya inherited Afarin’s hair#both of them already share some resemblance with Haya in certain regards. this would just make it worse#Midori wears it at a similar length to Haya. Suiren’s is much longer but it might just serve to remind Haya of her mom#and of Suiren still decides to cut it as part of her recovery.. then the resemblance will show even more#basically fun times all around#anyway. I love their designs as they are but also they both look so pretty with curlier hair#and yes i did just need an excuse to draw them in their underwear#because why not? they’re both legal adults and also attractive as fuck#I am well within my right thank you very much#also yeah I decided that I was gonna draw Midori with tattoos because it’s a crime I’ve only done it once so far#my new year’s resolution is to draw Midori in ways that would make any girl question her sexuality#because she’s just as gorgeous and incredible as her sister and I need to show it more often#Midori with tattoos like her dad>>>>>>>>>#genuinely. I always talk about how Kuvira is one lucky fucker for getting to be with Suiren but let’s be real. so is Opal#imagine having a girlfriend who looks like THAT. the dream. really#I’d be okay with having a gf who looks like either of them tbh. who wouldn’t#and maybe I decided to draw them in their underwear as a reaction to SOMEONE leaving me all hot and bothered yesterday. just a thought#(I’m kidding Kat I love you. this isn’t meant to pressure you I’m just messing around. promise <3)

Naming OCs actually sucks so much sometimes, especially when the creators of the source material have no fucking idea which culture they’re drawing from
#I’m trying to name Ghazan’s parents okay. cause if I continue my Haya fic it’ll come up#and the process just made me realise how much of a mish mash of cultures the avatar world is#and how hard it is to pick a name that would be appropriate#sometimes I wish I was 12 years old again and just picked stuff that sounded good#like there’s literally no reason for Suiren and Midori to have Japanese names considering ming-hua’s is Chinese and Ghazan’s is afghani#but again I was 12 and it’s been way too long and way too many connotations to their names have been formed for me to change them#just assume that since they’re in the red lotus their parents wanted to pick names separate from their respective nations/cultures. ok? ok#anyway back to my main point#I started with looking up origins for names I knew. particularly Ghazan’s bc I picked Haya’s on a whim#literally writing the first chapter of SotRL and typing up the first name that came to mind#which accidentally ended up being my actual distant aunt’s name oops#point is. it’s apparently hebrew. which really just throws everything off#so I looked up ghazan’s and it’s from an afghani dialect I believe. don’t take my word for it though blame google if I’m wrong#I checked multiple sources so I’m 80% sure if it#so I’m like. okay. and opened a list of afghani names on the side#then I remembered my recently adopted headcanon of Ghazan’s parents being originally from si wong desert#so I looked the sandbender tribes up and that’s when I started losing my mind#known names range from mongolian to chinese to thai#the sandbenders themselves are clearly inspired by arabs and north africans#so there’s a bajillion sources and o have no idea where to start#currently just scrolling through lists and writing out ones I like#I also want to avoid names with meanings that are too religious or ones that end in -aya or -an#so it’s a struggle lmao#there was a point when I thought it’d be funny if I named the mom Niloofar or Nilüfer cause it also means water lily like Suiren#but then decided it might be a bit too on the nose. I’m not really too into the whole ‘name your kids after family’ thing#even if it’s tangential#idk. it’s a cute idea but probably not the right call#writing woes#kind of

Sometimes I wish I wasn’t 12 when I came up with Suiren and Midori cause why the fuck do both of them have Japanese names
#no but seriously. neither of their parents have japanese names. none of their relatives have japanese names#they aren’t from the fire nation which would make a bit more sense#12 yo Nia why were you so dumb. why was there 0 thought put into their names#okay tbf I did take my time picking suiren’s. I googled flower names in different asian languages until I found one I liked#I knew I wanted her name to be water related so I mostly looked at lilies and lotuses#and suiren is a gorgeous name. don’t get me wrong#I don’t really have any qualms about it. I like it well enough and I think it suits her#my in-universe explanation is that her parents were 20 and 21 when they had her and handy grown out of teen rebellion just yet#so picked a name removed from their respective cultures#though if I had to pick a different name I’d choose Niloufer. it also means water lily but matches ghazan haya and afarin a bit better#I have no excuses for midori#every 2000s baby had an indie video game they were obsessed with in 2015-2019. mine was yandere simulator#so I named her after midori gurin#particularly because of that one fan song that I had playing on repeat that summer#the vibes of it matched my original midori concept so… here we are.#I regret it now bc 1) it’s incredibly lazy. holds no deep meaning nor is connected to her parents’ cultures#2) yanderedev is… yanderedev. would rather not have anything associated with him tbh#but I can’t really change it now because it’s been 5 years. I can’t imagine midori with any other name anymore#I don’t even know what I’d change it to. probably something chinese to match ming-hua#and even if I were to change it it would involve editing so much#posts. tags. fics. everything. it’s way too late now even if I had a good replacement name lined up#oh well. Midori it is I suppose. brb gonna go build a time machine to yell at my 12yo self to use her brain#sotrl suiren#sotrl midori#seeds of the red lotus

Last week I was given the choice of whether to spend the last month of summer with my mom or go with my dad’s SIL to Uzbekistan, and I picked my mom for obvious reasons: a) I haven’t seen her in almost a year and I miss her, b) Uzbekistan means either my overbearing grandparents or dad’s SIL’s relatives who I’ve never met, and c) it’ll actually be a chance to relax rather than be subjected to my grandma’s clean freak tendencies
HOWEVER, an extra bonus point to why I’m happy to not be going to Uzbekistan is that after all the writing and headcanons I’ve created, I don’t think I would be able to look my actual, real life Aunt Haya in the eyes

I have. SO MANY THOUGHTS about toxic codependent sibling relationships and the parallels between Haya & Ghazan and Suiren & Midori, and I really want to write a meta analysis digging deep into the depths of it all but it’s half past 4 a.m and my brain barely functions, so for now here have a Haya-related meme I made:
Tumblr media
#no you don’t understand I’m actually starting to feel for and sympathise with Haya what the fuck have I done#no a shitty childhood doesn’t excuse her actions but still. I can’t stop thinking about angsty gutpunchy concepts about her#but she’s on the receiving end instead of the other way round#it’s like that asoue quote#‘you must understand. he had a bad childhood’#‘I do understand. I’m having a bad childhood right now’#just… the development journey I took with Haya was so completely unexpected#originally she just existed as a fill in for the Ghazan’s older sister role that’s 66% canon#barely characterised. vague mentions of her being slightly apathetic but not bad#then I wrote the flashback in chapter 3 of sotrl which featured Suiren remembering how Haya taunted her about her parents’ imprisonment#not in detail or with any dialogue. just a statement that it happened#that’s when things took a turn for the worse#I don’t really remember when I decided Haya was downright abusive not only emotionally but physically too#I think I just realised that suiren wouldn’t be the way she is if her guardian was even halfway decent#and this Haya the way she is now was born#and I always knew that she had a less than ideal life starting since again. she raised ghazan so smth must have happened to their parents#but it was pretty vague up until recently when I decided I wanted to write or draw something from her POV#and everything took shape and I started coming up with more and more angsty ideas#and somehow ended up humanising her. making her more than just an abuser who hurts for the fun of it#she’s a deeply broken woman whose obsession with protecting her brother drove her to a lonely and bitter existence once her brother left her#who takes all those feelings of hurt and anger and betrayal out on the living proof of what said brother abandoned her for#she’s a prime example of what happens when one person doesn’t realise that their codependency became one sided#and when that same codependency is cut off with no prep or warning#in a way… she’s a haunting mirror to who Suiren might’ve become#and that just adds to the tragedy of it all#okay it is nearly 5 a.m now so o shall be going to bed lest I end up dead inside at my grandma’s tomorrow#i’ll expand on this later#byeeeeee good night))
