Blizzard - what book has influenced you the most?

Hmmmm, this is a hard one because I absolutely devoured books as a kid so there’s a lot to pick from and I like to think that I’ve taken little bits and pieces from everything I’ve ever read. That being said, I think the whole Anne of Green Gables series is up there; my mom bought the books for me when I was maybe 8 or so and I read them all multiple times over and I think they really set off my imagination (an important skill for an only child...) They’re also definitely where I learned about the idea of kindred spirits, which is something I still think about in relation to my friends etc. As an adult I also still think back on them and the idea of finding little joys and excitements everywhere. I’ve also always been a history nerd and I loved the Dear Canada/Dear America/Royal Diaries books and the Canadian Girl books and even though stuff like that honestly only taught me teeny tidbits of history, every so often I’ll remember a detail or something when reading more ~grown-up~ books on the same topics and I find that cool. 

Hailstone - what’s your favorite quote from a TV show or movie?

Haha I could make this sappy and introspective, but I absolutely love that moment in Gilmore Girls when Lorelai finds out that Rory started a fight between Dean and Jess and just pauses and looks at her and then starts singing “Did you ever know that you’re my heroooo?” ...makes me laugh every time haha. 

Reindeer - how many pillows do you sleep with?

I have four on my bed but I only sleep on one to keep my neck as aligned with my spine as I can cause I have neck issues (old lady problems...)

Choosing just one is impossible! you make me dream (and dreams are better than reality) was the first fic of your’s I fell in love with, so perhaps we’ll say that! Although both the Wedding Planner and Classical Musician AUs are a close second ❤️

Ahhh thank you! Writing (and eventually finishing, haha) Dreams AU taught me that what I could dream I could write, and I’m so thankful for everyone who’s loved that ‘verse as much as I did.

You know how much I love my AUs, so thank you for loving wedding planners AU and classical musician AU as well!! I love finding all these universes where my versions of TS can fall in love over and over again :’)

In Wild Horses, the scene in the hall before they go in to meet Katie, but also when she hugs Tessa and then Scott and their subsequent reactions! I’m not sure I could pick a specific scene from Redemption - the whole universe is so well formed in my mind that I see a lot of it very vividly!

I am a fan of Declarations of Love, haha. And hugs! I think it was really vivid to us when writing too!

Last song: uhhh I don’t listen to music that much since life is already so loud but probably something from the “Jeannette” musical album that dropped a couple weeks ago? They did a preview of it at a fundraiser for my state senator so I went and listened to the whole thing. It’s good, I hope the show can make it when shows are a thing again.

Last movie: oof I also have no idea about this one. Might’ve been when we did a LOTR marathon a couple months back, or maybe when I watched Athlete A?

Currently watching: Re-watching Gilmore Girls (again) because it makes my heart happy and very little in the world makes my heart happy right now. Also watched the first ep of Schitt’s Creek and want to watch the rest but my mom wants to watch it with me so it might be a bit.

Currently reading: Anne’s House of Dreams by L. M. Montgomery; I’ve been (re-)reading the Anne books for the same reason I’m rewatching Gilmore Girls. They make my heart happy and are some A+ escapism.

Currently craving: Can I answer companionship? I had a lovely dream last night where I was traveling with friends and we were at this fun amusement park and just enjoying being together. I had a crush on one of them and we were going to go on a date that night and I was happy and content. But then my alarm went off and I promptly remembered the state of the world. There are better ways to wake up.

1. how many works do you have on ao3?

62 as epigraphs

2. what's your total ao3 word count?

i do not actually know! i wrote single chapters in a fic collection years ago, so that messes with my stats and i don't know how long what i wrote was anymore, so i can't do the math. but 2023 was 54,372 words, and 2022 was 113,431!

3. what fandoms do you write for?

currently: the gilded age, technically still svu but uh, let's not talk about that one fic i fully abandoned (at least until that question comes up lolol).

past lives: madam secretary, the west wing, the newsroom, scrubs, sound of music (i'm as confused as you are, don't worry), the good wife, grey's, stranger things, bones, fleabag.

4. what are your top five fics by kudos?

as epigraphs:

the stillness of remembering, svu the legend of how you disappeared, svu come and untangle me (one of these days), svu let it all unfurl, into broken remnants, svu rather be sad with you (than anywhere away from you), svu

5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?

i do! i like the concept of having a conversation with readers (though i rarely get into an actual multi-comment convo). also i'm very type-a and pro-inbox zero, so i clear it out in batches to do replies.

6. what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

for you i'd bleed myself dry, for the good wife. it's a post-5.16 fix-it fakeout, and every comment on it is just yelling at me hahaha

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

i think most of mine have a happy ending, even if it's not a true hea. my friend and i coined the term "milk and cookies ending," because even if we throw angst at you, we will give you your milk and cookies as a treat lol

8. do you get hate on fics?

thankfully, no.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

incredibly rarely, and if so, very vaguely and (if you ask anyone who knows me), fairly "limb-free."

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

i've written exactly one (1), imagining what a friendship between cam saroyan from bones and olivia benson from svu would look like!

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

sort of. i never called them out on it, so i shan't be doing that here.

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

nope!

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

yep! for two fandoms. for one, we split up the povs and alternated, which was very fun. for the other one, i (see the answer to 9. lol) handed off the smut.

14. what's your all-time favourite ship?

elizabeth/henry from madam secretary was my first real ship and the first fandom i ever participated in and wrote fic for, so they're the ride-or-dies forever.

15. what's the wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

looking at you, eo talks about god fic.

16. what are your writing strengths?

clarity and economy of words? i think? if you know me irl, this makes sense considering my day job. also, keeping things in-character, when it comes to dialogue and internal monologue.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

getting away from vignette structure, writing plot. i hate plot. i suck at plot.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for fic?

hoo boy, as a bilingual person (german and english) i have very strong feelings about this, but generally: okay if done incredibly sparingly, and in a way that sounds natural. harder to pull off than you'd think!

VM get to know me

I stole this from twitter (credit to ohvirtuemoir again), but I don’t really use twitter, and I’ve been wanting to do a VM one of these and instead of making it up I’ll use this one!

What does your @ mean?

It’s a reference to the show Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip by Aaron Sorkin. I’ve had the same blog name since 2009 and I will never change it.

Any nicknames you go by?

Sometimes Ash but rarely.

Favorite VM program?

Farrucas. Carmen. Great Gig. Mahler. (Did anyone really expect me to pick only one?)

Least favorite VM program?

I have an irrational hatred for Funny Face. Honorable mention to Won’t You Charleston.

Which VM program has made you cry the most?

I’m not a crier. The only program I have actually cried during was the first time I saw Fix You, at the first show in Abbotsford so no one had any idea what was coming.

Favorite VM costumes?

Oooooh so many. The Sway dress!, Farrucas dress, Great Gig world’s costumes, Valse Triste!, Seasons green dress and Olympic IE dress, that dress she wore for compulsories in 2007 with the space buns where it spun out so pretty, the compulsory golden waltz dress, I’m quite sure I’m missing a ton.

Least favorite VM costumes?

Ooooh interesting. Charleston dress, I don’t love the team event SD dress from 2018, really any of the ones she wore in ~2006 I don’t love.

Favorite off ice moment?

Obviously there’s too many to count. I love watching them practice off ice. And I will always have a place in my heart for the Newlyweds video. Also the scene in their show where he’s ordering their dinner on the phone.

A song that you wish VM had skated to?

From the moment I saw them I wanted them to skate to Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman. We got Never Enough.

Which program would you most like to see VM skate to again?

I would give pretty much anything to see them do Great Gig or Jack and Diane or I Want to Hold Your Hand.

3. Do you miss anyone?

Yessss! I was supposed to see my parents in April and didn’t get to go home as planned, so I haven’t seen them since early January and miss them a lot (esp. cause I wish I could be doing groceries and stuff for them). Also was supposed to be seeing friends who are all dispersed around the world right about now and I miss them so so so much cause I haven’t seen some of them since 2018 :(

12. What is something you want right now?

At the most basic level I wish I could just stroll around in the nice weather, go downtown, enjoy the city I’m in before I move away. I’d like to be able to hang out with friends and see my family and browse bookstores. I also want a cat haha. A job would be nice too ;P

33. something you want to learn

I really want to take some adult skating lessons! I was going to this year but the spots at the rink near me filled up before I got around to signing up. I tried out tap instead (and loved it!). I also really want to learn how to sew clothes and bigger projects.

That ONE scene for ‘in all the ways i love you (i cannot tell you with words)’ and also ‘write these words on my skin’

For the classical musicians AU, that one scene I wanted to write was when S realises he’s in love with T when she’s playing his violin. In-love realisations are hands-down my favourite things to write and I was in love with the idea of the resolution to the tonic note feeling like coming home, and linking that feeling of coming home to the feeling of realising you’ve fallen in love.

For ‘write these words on my skin’...that one scene was where T was having trouble writing a scene and S helps her, uh, get inspired? Close second was when T accidentally calls him sir and everything that unfolds after that.

Real name? Sorry, I don’t use it online.

Zodiac? Aries, though IRL people tend to be a little surprised by that. Favorite musicians or groups? None, in particular - I love music so I play a wide range. Movie scores have been a long time enjoyment for me. Right now I have Hozier in my car (or his music, rather - not Hozier himself.)

Favorite sports teams? I don’t sport, generally speaking, but enjoying seeing something live if I have the chance. Figure skating, of course.

Do I get asks? Yes.

How many blogs do I follow? Almost none. Like… seven, maybe? Which is an all time high for me and a result of a glitchy experience a year or two ago. Mostly I prefer to, and do, visit blogs than to have them on my dash. Tumblr crushes? No, I like my tumblrs well-rounded. ;)

Lucky numbers? 7, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t feel the same way about me.

What am I wearing? PJs right now.

Dream vacation? I love travelling and seeing new things, and so it’s always hard to narrow that down. Asking me right now, some place warm and sunny and with a beautiful beach.
