I feel bad for listening (and enjoying) Liam's music only now he has gone :/ I listened to a few songs (strip that down and polaroid) but not really the rest of his music. I was a huge 1d fan and I know it doesn't make any difference but I keep wishing I had supported his solo career. I guess I just stopped following them as closely once they went on hiatus.

I’m sorry, love. I didn’t enjoy the solo music he put out, either. And I stopped paying attention to him because even though I liked him as a person, I wasn’t a “fan” of his anymore. I honestly think that’s a very healthy, “normal” way to relate to a celebrity. Even one who brought you a lot of joy at one time.

I get what you’re saying, though. To be honest, what I wish I had done more of was speak out loudly against the bullying. I talked about it a lot to friends, but it kind of felt it was going on in a separate dimension and there was nothing I could do about it. I realize now how much the bullying he faced was a systemic issue within the world of celebrity worship/social media etc. and I’m as much a part of that as anyone. i'm sorry i don't have anything new hl fics for you :( it's been a while since i've written fics in general and even longer since i've written 1d stuff. i guess the inspiration hasn't been there lately... on the plus side, i've finally got a new job (yayy) and i'm knee deep in research for a novel i'm so so so excited about. after suffering from writer's block for like 4 years, it's good to get into that creative spirit again haha.

this is a little random but seeing how the contract negotiations for bp members went and that some of them are establishing their individual agencies made me realize something. for bp members, we know that they’ll likely have group endeavors that are few and far between, but we know that in the case of bts that is a risk that hybe cannot take by any means.

we’ve already unpacked a lot of the reasons why hybe was so intentional on providing jk with every possible tool and then some. i think an additional layer to that was likely related to them retaining the rights to the members solo endeavors. even if they failed to keep all of the members in-house for their solo gigs then at least they got to maintain their “biggest asset” which would calm investors’ concerns if any of the members decided to dip in the solo aspect. this also worked as a way to coerce the other members to continue their solo careers with hybe since it was very intentional that when the company is interested in investing in you there are “incredible” results. hence, their absolute lack of effort for any of the other members bc that would prove that the true determinant of success is the company’s full support.

i think manipulation is an inevitable part of any contract negotiation so it seems logical that the company, in order to mantain control over the members, would want to assert dominance/power over them. even if they’re not being manipulated they are in a relatively volatile position right now. all of them are used to a level of success and not many people would give that up for integrity 🥶. i don’t know if any of the other members would or wouldn’t go that route but im sure at least some of them would. i don’t know if i’d blame them either, it’s just business after all.

as we’ve established before, jimin did ruin a lot of their plans to show a stark difference between jk and the rest of the members, so they had to get heavy-handed with the mediaplay and imo they succeeded. jimin had as good a year as jk, new jeans, stray kids, seventeen, all of these kpop acts being super pushed in the media as the “next big thing” but for some reason he’s not getting half the press they are. 🤔

Yea I saw what went down with bp and it’s the best of both worlds for them because I feel like they’ve always been more interested in their solo endeavors than their work as a group. For BTS it’s trickier like you said because even the smallest hint of that something is afoot that would lead to them finding different labels for solo work would be be blown up by the media. Which in turn, cause investors to get skittish. Even that 2 month hiatus they first took back in 2019 had people claiming that they were disbanding and would follow 1D’s foot steps.

The lack of effort in the other members is ,like you said, because they wanted jk specifically to stand out since he’s the canidate those chose to do so. But Hybe’s main goal is to show investors that they can make a star through their resources. Bang even said along the lines of this in an interview because that’s what the music industry abides by at large. Billboard’s most recent rule change after like crazy hit #1 also came about this way because they said fans had too much power and it was the labels job to tell GP what the “next big thing” was gonna be. It’s why you see other kpop groups, even though they’ve possibly made a name for themselves, you still know the company they hail from first because the company is the driving force behind their rise to fame. Hybe wants to be a dominant force in the industry by their own name and not just because they’re known as the label that houses BTS. Still think if they wanted to show this they should’ve started with an up and coming and not a member of bts since that just defeats the purpose and is already showing people your dependent on that member’s pre existing fanbase but whatever.

Bang PD is a bastard, but I don’t think he’s trying to “control” BTS. At least not in the way SM does to his groups. I’m not giving him the benefit the doubt in this scenario, but I still fully believe BTS knows their worth and know that hybe is nothing without them. I’m sure there have been multiple instances where they probably had to compromise (the english trilogy for one) and they’ll probably be more in the future. I do agree with some of them being accustomed to a level of success, but it’s not that it’s because hybe is responsible for it. It’s off their own talent and armys backing them. So I doubt in the case if one of them was given an ultimatum of loosing that artistic integrity or going the route jk has (if offered) they’d get shelved, cause hybe still needs them. I know there’s always the possibility of that happening though. It’d be real annoying but I don’t think I’d be as irritated as I was with jk because I’ve seen and know what they’re capable of on their own. In contrast to jk where he just threw in the towel without trying (which is where 60% of my frustration at him comes from). As long as it’s still their print of music quality with their work ethic behind it. I could deal.

Jimin’s not getting as much press as those groups and jk, because hybe has made it so on their end. lol. That’s the entire act of suppression. They gave jimin the barest amount of congrats after FACE era as to not seem completely neglectful, but beyond that they didn’t go out their way to give him his flowers. So it’s not that the mediaplay was successful, hybe is just doing their best to ensure jk is the only one who’s talked about. But even that isn’t working because Jimin’s just too much of a talk point. You see these people on twitter with blue ticks constantly mention him for engagement money and whatever move he makes generates interest because he’s just a natural draw. Literally the worst member for hybe to try that tactic on tbh lmao.

I think that people who get pissy about RPF are generally new to fandom, or have never delved deeper past surface level fan spaces, because the way a lot of modern fandoms are are because of RPF. A lot of online references are RPF (eg: my mom sold me to 1D jokes). Quite a bit of vocabulary that some ppl still used were coined from RPF spaces. In my opinion, RPF is a very natural thing: all of us have imagined scenarios with or about another person, what’s the difference between imagining it and writing it out? I’m sure if the people they’re writing about said harshly and explicitly that they don’t want it that a lot of people would stop posting, delete posts or resort to private conversations about them, but if they haven’t then what’s the harm?? Even more so if they are very explicit and sexual and generally don’t care about how people perceive them. Idk, it’s just so weird seeing ppl get huffy and grossed out and weird with it bc it’s so evident that they’re new to the internet lolol sorry for the rant

yeah very well said!! from my personal experience, every single person that i've seen get weird about rpf (especially joost related stuff) was very young, so most likely not really experienced in fandom. like i've been in the kä fandom for a year now and you can tell that it's predominantly adults in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties bc people are just normal about things. and if something is not for them they just block and/or move on

st*rfucker - a bit too saccharine on first listen but it has better replay value as time goes on. the beginning of the shoehorned jesus lyrics and the continuation of limo imagery to represent fame which is actually fitting admittedly bc just like a limo that is supposed to represent glamour and celebrity living, they are just as widespread and accessible as him and aren't really that glamorous at all. also this is me saying again wow he complains a lot about fame for someone who isn't really that famous. i still hate the cutoff at the end bc. cmon man. 7/10

real super dark - ok i did like the gilbert gottfried inspired melody i think that's fun actually. the song lyrics? uhhhhhh. just more complaining. if you have listened to any of the albums since fandom you are not missing much there other than the otto serial killer jokes he has inserted here? which is a choice i guess. instrumental is great tho. i feel incredibly stupid listening to a lot of the other parts of the song tho. 7/10

funeral grey - god i can't bear listening to this one on my own i'm sorry. live it's fine, but the studio recording i would rather kill myself than listen to again. IT'S SO ANNOYING. the terrible overenunciated vocals. awsten's attempt at humor by writing these wattpad fic lyrics that make me cringe to my core because i know there's a part of him being genuine. the one direction ripoff hook because he managed to get one of 1d's actual songwriters to help write the track. the only saving grace is the ending but at that point it's too late for any redemption. 2/10

brainwashed - ironically this was written with the 1d guy again and. i'm actually fine with this one LOL. it's simple and lowkey so it's considerably less annoying than funeral grey. considering awsten said the lyrics on this album were hypersexual, but it's 2023 so this is fairly tame, it just makes me wonder how much he has repressed in his psyche. 6/10

2 best friends - ok now we're back to simple annoying. if you tune out the lyrics enough, it sounds like disney channel filler music. but it's actually about ~~sExxxx~~ hahahahaha everything about this album so far is like reading fanfics clearly written by middle schoolers. awsten's sad about his situationship so he goes out with his 2 best friends to forget but it doesn't work :( but he could just fuck his friends bc it wouldn't hurt to try at this point. hey what if this was what the song was actually about that because in travis' insane songfic he made jawn and awsten hook up during this chapter #neverforget #riptravisficeventhoughmebitchingontumblrmadehimkillit 4/10

end of the water (feel) - hearing awsten try to hit those high notes reminded me of people saying brendon straining on his high notes on the last panic tour was like hearing a dog that needed to be shot out back for its own good. this is very obviously a charlie puth ripoff to the t because not only does he hit high notes that no man should ever reach, but i'm pretty sure the verse instrumentals rip off "light switch" by charlie. anyways more of "ughhhhh i'm not getting a text backkkkkk" that makes me want to throw awsten's phone into the pacific. i still don't know why kurtis conner is here and how this is supposed to relate to any of this at all. also actually now that i'm crossing checking the genius pages for these, the descriptions for these songs make them sound much better than they actually are lol. 3/10

self-sabotage - this one is mid on it's own but funny because i remember the amount of twitter discourse this song has spawned. "awsten's being toxic and misogynistic" did we not listen to some of the songs off fandom "awsten has bpd" what if he just sucks sometimes. the memories of this are more memorable than the song itself. 5/10

ritual - remember when i found out the soundbyte at the beginning was from an aids psa. good times. fine song other than the shoehorned soundbyte. the entire song is just a repetition of the verses and chorus like a ~~ritual~~ spooky! i like the flair vincente void adds with his screams i feel like this feature makes more sense because it's a song about protecting yourself from the doctrines of religion that harmed you when you were growing up and apparently vincente has known awsten since he was 13???? only thing i hate is the corpse ripoff ending so much so that i have a personal version where i edited that out. 8/10

fuck about it - BORINGGGGGG OH MY GODD. if you've heard one blackbear feature, congrats you've heard them all because they all sound the same and blackbear adds no energy whatsoever. he made a bayside instrumental sound boring you really can't underestimate him. anyways back to the song itself; the situationship has dissolved into pure sex and disinterest and annoyance outside of that and with the way awsten sounds like he plans having hate sex, i don't think he's ever had hate sex before. there's the ending synth i think is fun and that's the only reason this gets a point at all. 1/10

closer - it's a sweet song but um. haven't we heard this in a way before? *cough cough 21 questions* i think this is the closest (lol) parx comes to at a return to pre-fandom form, but when i listen to the chords too much i'm just like "did he lowkey rip off that one smashing pumpkins song". anyways it's just about needing to be closer to someone or ending the relationship completely. simple but effective but not nearly as effective as 21 questions for me sorry. 7/10

a night out on earth - ok i had physical tickets to the last tour bc i won them on idobi so i was like "THIS SONG BETTER BE AT LEAST DECENT BC I STILL HANG UP THE TICKET WITH THIS NAME" and it was at the least. it's like. a good waterparks song, but i feel like i've heard it already? my mind goes back to see you in the future but for these i can't tell who's ripping off who more lol. yeah i feel like other than some interesting production here and there it's a rehash of shit we already heard before. shoehorned religious lyric. fake ass band guys. "i turn my agony into songs and people only like when i'm hurt". "i've been dead since 2016" (part two). "i'm evil now. idgaf. wat ever."

and then i think the part that makes me go awwww but also confuses me is the im a natural blue radio interview snippet? like why does this all tie in together now. geoff's not even here bro how is this the only release where otto's the only one namedropped when awsten hasn't even named dropped him until last album. 80% the album is about some random relationship how is this supposed to tie into all of these.

idk i feel like i've just had this on my mind when when of my mutuals made their own analysis on awsten's mindsets towards life and said how he uses fear as motivation but his perfectionism keeps him from using failure as an editor and how this song was the peak example of this; the rehash of the same ideas over and over because despite his stubbornness, despite "ultimately -not- giving in to the perception that you’re worth ‘Demonizing'", he never confronts the problem for real, just compartmentalizes the problem away and doesn't truly overcome the root of his problems. that's what i feel like manifests in this album for me to be put off by it at its core. nothing ever changes, he just finds a new situation to complain at. maybe that's also why his fans never change even as new ones come though. maybe that's why we also stay stagnant in this with him.

again i get it, he's a public figure; if he did dive too deep into this and didn't choose to generalize the lyrics for his own sake, he would probably end up incriminating himself way too much and have a hard time performing some of these songs. but i can't help but wonder. if he's truly getting over a mental obstacle like that, or keeps himself so set on the future that he ignores the problems he never solved. like he always does. like he always seems to be doomed to. anyways, 7/10 song.

all in all, it's an album that tries to reach a concept of coming to terms with your sexuality and religious trauma all entwined in fame but in reality it's mostly just about a sucky situationship and awsten complaining again while putting in random religious references sometimes and the beginning and ending are about fame. my hot takes are: tennis imagery = gay sex, there's not enough of a distinction between "soulsucker" and awsten to make "album lore" when the overarching concept of parx's discography is "awsten's life sucks", and darth vader is luke's father. - iz

Hi anon. I will put my answer below because is too long and I'm unable to explain it short.

The idea of you is a book that now is having a screen adaptation on prime, here is the trailer. Acording to the author Robinne Lee she was inspired by a guy in a boyband, here is her quote:

A few years ago, my husband was away on business and I was up late surfing music videos on YouTube when I came across the face of a boy I’d never seen in a band I’d never paid attention to, and it was so aesthetically perfect it took me by surprise. It was like…art. I spent a good hour or so Googling and trying to figure out who this kid was and in doing so I discovered that he often dated older women, and so the seed was planted. When my husband returned a couple of days later, I joked with him that I’d found the perfect guy and I was leaving him and our two kids, “oh, and by the way, he’s half my age.”

So basically initially she was inspired by Harry Styles, here are some tweets of her talking about the character. Then in other interview mentions that is a combination of different guys:

I made him into my dream guy,” she told me, “like Prince Harry, meets Harry [Styles],” plus a couple of ex-boyfriends, a little of her husband, and a dash of Eddie Redmayne.

I think the movie is being controversial because first is inspired by Harry dating older women since he was younger, according to the author the character is 20, but the womaniser image that Harry had and that likes and dates older women and this image started when he was 17, a minor.

This idea of Harry liking older women, just reduce him as an artist just to that image that has been know for the general public is just frustrating. And also in the articles and social media talking about the movie they had been making the comparison between photos of Nicholas and Harry.

Nicholas said this quote about if the character is inspired by Harry Styles:

“We tried to create a character that felt, you know, a kin to Harry in a sense that he’s a younger man dating older women. It was important to create someone who felt new and original and not a shoddy impersonation of this person.”

Anything that mentions Harry Styles will always bring attention and clicks so the promo of the movie know what they are doing, and this is nothing against Nicholas, the book is just inspired by Harry and the movie is promoted with that idea.

Now the second problem is that the songwriter and producer of the album of the movie of this fictional boyband is Savan Kotecha. If you are not aware he is a producer and songwriter and was involved with One Direction since The X Factor and work for the first two albums of the band. Savan is a person not liked in the fandom, because he basically never wanted the boys to be part of the songwriting, he saw the band as this machine, never saw the boys as artists and said awful things about Louis. He is one of the persons responsable that Louis didn't get that much solos, read this transcript for more info.

Savan also in that interview explains that couldn't see the boys as this grown young adults that wanted to write songs, because he knew them since they started and didn't think they would have the ability to do so (he was wrong as we know). So Savan left after the second album, now his association with this movie that is related to Harry and 1D is his way of trying to stay relevant again in the fandom.

This is my perspective, but anyone can have a different POV of what the movie is hated and probably they would explain better than me. Sorry for the long response as you can't see I can't write short answers.

I always find it kind of funny when you and your anons (please don’t take this in an offensive way) say that Louis’ speeches is the same every night and the same setlist.

When Harry toured I almost knew his speeches better than my own name, if it wasn’t for the breaks where he read signs, he said the exact same thing every night, you could even hear the people who was live for his shows saying them together with him. His thank you speeches didn’t change, just like Louis’ didn’t do and just like most artists probably don’t so.

His setlist was also almost identical during the whole tour, only with a couple surprises at Wembley and Harryween. Louis gave us a new cover when LATAM leg started and at the festival two months ago he played Just hold on.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry and Louis equally, I just sometimes feel we want more from Louis, just because he doesn’t have the “funny” stage performance like Harry.

Just a little comment regarding Dylan. I think it was her own choice to not sing the song, I’m sure she don’t even know Louis good enough to know if Larry is real or not, and therefore she didn’t want to take the chance in making anyone unhappy. Louis sure didn’t tell her if he dates Harry or not, if he had a problem with the song he would have never hired her to the job.

In order not to offend anyone i think it's important to distinguish between what i say and what my anons say. My anons say loads of different things. Some i agree with and some i don't.

I have said that his speeches are the same every night, but i have not said that his setlist is the same. I have said the opposite. I would have preferred a fixed setlist so you know what songs you're going to get and make it easier for Louis to know the setlist and make it easier for him to learn the lyrics of the songs. He could switch out one song per night if he wanted to and make that a surprise (like TS does) or do one song as a treat every other show like H does with Medicine. H also invited legends on stage a couple of times to join him (Harry and Daryl Braithwaite singing the Horses as an example. The aussie crowd LOVED that).

I was pretty bored with H's thank you speech at the end of tour, you're right. But H's interactions with fans, his banana song, his impromptu snippets of 1D songs, the gender reveals and coming outs etc. all made each show different and memorable. We were able to distinguish between each show and look forward to what would happen at the next show. It was exciting and unpredictable.

I do think we expect more of Louis because he isn't showing us his charming and funny personality and entertaining us in the same way that other artists do. I think it's absolutely fine to not want to do stand up between songs like H does, but you need to find something that's memorable, engages fans and make it a good experience to compensate for the lack of entertainment.

I see everyone on twitter talking about Sabrina Carpenter's lyric changes for "Nonsense". She changes the lyrics of the outro on the fly. Sometimes she’s paying tribute to the city in which she’s performing and, other times, she’s testing how far she can push the limits of sexually suggestive lyrics. Everyone is talking about it across fandoms and it's making people pay attention to her and put her on people's radars. I think it's pretty brilliant. I would love for Louis to do something like that.

About Dylan. I think it wasn't her own choice, because it's an obviously wrong choice to make for her and her career. It's her biggest hit, it's about a 1D member and she’s at a festival full of directioners. She couldn’t have played a more relatable song than that song, and it would have made the crowd go ballistic. And what artist doesn’t play their most famous song? What small scale artist does that? What a missed opportunity! She wants louies/larries as fans? Cater to them? Louis wants harries and directioners to come to the festival? Cater to them! I'm sorry, but i don't see one good reason why she would skip that song to that audience at that festival. The song isn't a larry song, it's a harrie song. Nobody in the crowd would have a problem with it being played. So somebody behind the stage must have.

Hello! I'm wanting to start writing 1D fanfictions, do you have any tips or tricks? Love your writing. :P

okay this has been sitting there a while but i wanted to answer this PROPERLY, anon, so please forgive me.

Here is Things To Do When Writing 1D Fanfiction (Ellis' Cohesive List of Important Stuff) 1. Before you start writing, always decide if this is canon universe & timeline or not. Even if it's an AU, is it still canon timeline? Where does it diverge from canon? If it diverges before the XFactor, then how did the boys meet? How do they know each other? If it diverges after or during the band, then how do they exist in relation to each other? What are their friendships like? How do they communicate? Do they communicate?

2. Research Research Research! Its so much easier to write a fic if you understand their relationships with the people around them and their families; for example, Niall and his older brother Greg are estranged. Is this part of the fic? How is it relevant? Does it add to the story? Is this something you're keeping as part of the story? Or Liam has two older sisters; how has this shaped his worldview? There's so much to unpack with their families and how it would hypothetically impact them in fanfiction.

3. Think of their personal expression. Are they still musicians? Are they in the band? If not, how do their personalities reflect in other aspects? How do they express themselves? What do they do as a job? How is this reflected in the way they are as a musician? 4. PLANNING. Do not start writing without at least some dot points. know where your story starts, know how it ends. Have a vague idea of how it gets from A to B. Write down any questions you have about their life/relations, and make sure you find out the answer before you start writing. 5. Pacing: How long is the timespan of the fic? How many words are you going to use to show that? Hours? Days? Just a few minutes? You wouldn't write 100k for an hours worth of story. Are there time jumps? Is it two separate times? Is the timeline straightforward, or does it jump back and forth between the beginning and end? 6. External media; this is probably one of my favourite things. Before you write, create another form or collection of media; a playlist, a moodboard, a collection of fanart/photos that are similar, a drawing. Anything you think that exaggerates and assists the story; this helps you visualise and create. 7. this isnt strictly 1d, but. THESAURUS DOT COM my BELOVED. use it. if a sentence isn't interesting in content, it has to be interesting in execution; exacerbate appearance and behaviour with intruiging adjectives, the kinds of words that people read and then google to understand better. 8. And lastly; whatever you do, do it consciously. Don't just write "Harry did x on stage," why did he do x? What consequentially happened because he did x? What emotions did he do x out of? And how is it relevant to the story? Everything has a reason. Write purposefully.

I think it should be a law you have to play WMYB at a wedding. My bff that I go to all my 1D related events with and send all my 1D related tiktoks to have discussed that i would simply play all their albums as a band and solo at my wedding and everyone would just have to enjoy. Nothing new here. I went for walks this week and just relaxed a lot. I'm hoping to not stress myself out too much this summer. Other than that 🤷‍♀️ nothing much here. I firmly believe this. this wall to wall slaps. there was one point in "one thing" where I thought he was gonna say youve got... pussy. anyway he didn't say that. there are some PROFOUNDLY 2011 synth moments in this. best lyric: all of what makes you beautiful. I DO want to stay up all night!!!! 4.5/5

take me home: getting a little more risqué -- we are "[taking] it all the way". whoa! in addition to expressing lust there's more themes of jealousy, as well as genuine tenderness. aurally more diverse than their debut. best lyric: I can't compete with your boyfriend cuz he's got 27 TATTOOOOOS. so specific... 3.7/5

midnight memories: my favorite 1d song is on this album which is the story of my life which is genuinely so beautiful and moving. just a really lovely timeless song. best lyric is actually the concept of best song ever, which is not in fact the best song ever, but merely a description of the experience of listening to the best song ever. 4/5

4: as mc pointed out this album shares a title with beyonces best album. I will say that I was confused because there are five members of one direction, until I realized 4 is in fact about the number that the album is and not the number of lads present. anyway. this is genuinely a fantastic album. steal my girl is the platonic ideal of a pop song. girl almighty is just fucking GOOD. i fucking love it. its dynamic and genuine and fucking bops above all. night changes. night changes. night changes. night changes. the nostalgia it conjures, and I never even ate spaghetti with Zayn. no control is WONDERFUL vibe wise. and the whole album SOUNDS so 2014. this album really is freshman year of college. act my age is just fucking wonderful, an anthem (and sorry but the comparison must be made -- better than when I'm 64). 6/5. boy bands at their peak. pop at its peak. you don't get better than this album

made in the am: I was GUTTED to see Zayn is not on this album, but good for him. I wish he'd make more solo music bc his first album slapped but I understand that hes busy being a dilf these days. still. I said you don't get better than 4, but you do, and it's made in the am. its still got that boy band pep but it's branching out into actual vibes. I am so sad retroactively that they broke up bc 4 and made in the am are IT. 10/5. pop album of all time

overall rating: 28.2/25. A+

reflections: 1d is so unpretentious. obviously that's the point of a boyband in a lot of ways, but it's just refreshing to hear something uncomplicated and there's no bad words and nothing but these curated, shimmering performances of emotion. and each one of these emotions lasts about 3 minutes and 35 seconds. its perfectly contained! I love these songs also because by the second chorus you already know all the words and the tune which is PRIME sing along material. I do think its interesting how curated the album covers are. they are having such an insanely good time in them because if they don't have a good time they're not going to get to get their daily ration of tesco brand digestive cookies. its so easy to be a hater on this cold bitch of an earth but one of my fave concert experiences really was in the year 2021 screaming the lyrics to what makes you beautiful with harry "its like a movie that's a movie" styles. I loved this experience and all the new bops I found. I foresee them to be the perfect antidote for dissociating on my morning commute.

It has come to my attention that I am letting people down because we are “severely lacking in content” and prompt updates. I am so sorry to have failed you all at this completely voluntary, unpaid, unrecognized job of running this update account. 

I’ve been running DNN by myself for 3 years at this point. Two of my friends help when they can if I’m completely unavailable. I have a full time job, other interests, and a life outside of fandom and Niall. Not a single person from the original group of owners is an active stan anymore. 

When there are important updates, they are ALWAYS prompt. All his instagram posts, all his tweets and announcements. Anything related to music is immediately posted. Everything exciting (like his thing with Lewis the other day) was posted. Sorry we’re not posting every single FAN picture that barely anyone reblogs, from yet another golf tournament! No one cares that much about those anyways and even then, we’re posting the HQs that we have and worthwhile content. Every sighting throughout the weeks is also posted, and sometimes that includes his girlfriend! The same way we do with Deo, Mully, Martin, every person who’s a constant presence in his life. Sorry we don’t treat her like she’s a disease! 

It IS hard work running an update account, people have gotten burnt out from it all the time. When he releases music, it takes hours and hours of work to post content in a well organized and formatted way. It takes a long time to find content because we always source where we got it from. There is no “credits to owner” or posting without the original link. And every other account everywhere posts without credit so of course it’s faster?? I spend HOURS trying to find things for DNN just to make sure it’s sourced?? 

To act like we owe anyone anything, to answer multiple asks specifically targeting and attacking me, to talk like I work for the fandom and i’m failing at my job is disheartening. IT’S HERE. AND IT’S HUGE.

Dear many anons, I’ve kept you waiting there way too long my love. Also thank you @larrysballetslippers​​ in particular for bullying me into releasing this thing hahahah. I’m SORRY. This has been sitting in my drafts unfinished for so so so so SO long because I wanted to do it right and I still don’t know if I did but enough is enough. This is a big big long big post about the song Kiwi. Lyric breakdown, time of writing, many possible meanings, song parallels, music video, you name it. I know Kiwi has been analysed a lot a lot and this is not an alternate reading to anything, this is putting many possible interpretations together at once. Really I’m gonna bring a whole lot into this. Maybe read it in a couple of sittings. It’s a lot to digest. Let's go! Kiwi Kiwi Kiwi wooo

All this should be obvious but with other analyses where I didn’t state these things I got a couple of responses that show I should have so blabla incoming: 

Not trying to convince you of anything, don’t take things too literal, things can have multiple meanings, there are nuances to things even though I might fail to bring it in a nuanced matter sometimes. I’m nowhere trying to claim these interpretations are what he meant when he wrote this because how would I know (and people claiming other things don’t know either). Just decide for each thing if it makes sense to you, stay skeptical, crunch that brain and welp with this analysis you kinda have no choice this time because I’m giving a ton of different interpretations and they definitely don’t all fit together. 

All that said this is coming from someone who is convinced Harry & Louis are together and the lyrics at the very very least are incorporating babygate so just get ready to have that in here loads. It’s also written with the assumption whoever reads this knows all about that. If not have this. 

Song parallels disclaimer: with pointing out song parallels I’m not implying whichever song was written later is referencing the other one. I’m simply pointing out there parallels can be drawn and you can interpret it whichever way you like. Especially those between Harry’s and Louis’ lyrics it’s dare I say a realistic conclusion to draw that they are and will continue to have loads and loads of parallels in their work not because they’re doing it on purpose to relate to each other but because they’re going through the same stages together, hardships, and being exposed to the same shit over and over again, oh I don’t know maybe because they’re sharing a life. Although I do think some of the times they do purposefully leave lil nods to other songs because they are somehow related to the song they’re writing, and that sometimes those are each other’s songs, just know that when I point out a parallel that’s not because I’m thinking Louis’ music is based on Harry’s and vice versa or something. Ok got that out of the way.

Things known about the writing process

It was one of the first songs he worked on after 1D. We got footage of him singing it with long hair (gif above, credits here), so it was before may 2016, and this pic of I’m assuming the same moment:

He's said this about Kiwi:

"It started out as a joke, now it's one of my favorite songs. It's one of the first ones I wrote for the album, when I was getting out a lot of energy. I hadn't written in a long time and this is what came out of it." - here

There really isn't any other option to explain this song except for resorting to “haha jk lol” now is there?

“Getting out a lot of energy” I have trouble interpreting more than one way. I almost want to state it as a fact that it was him getting out a lot of frustration. Almost as if there was sOmEtHiNg really fueling this thing. I think the stuff he chose to get out there first as he went solo is very telling, with Kiwi being the 2nd released music video after Sign of the Times. He came out of 1D, went on a 6 minute strugglerant about being sad and stuck (in the industry/closet/his image) in a defeatist (but not entirely devoid of hope) kinda way and then followed it up with another 3 minute rant about losing it, shit happening around him driving him crazy, this is frustrating the fuck out of me I'm just gonna release that energy by yelling about the thing that frustrates me the most among all this bullshit over and over again let's go SHE'S HAVING HIS BABY AND IT'S OUT OF OUR HANDS yes this is how I cope. I don’t know if this needs to be said really but I do think it’s about that, about babygate. (also there’s this idea it’s written by louis and I think that doesn’t make much sense) It’s really in your face, it’s so obvious it somehow becomes hard to believe he really did that but I do think he really did. That said, it could be that it’s not just about that, that it’s about all stunts, stunts in general, or even the whole (media/industry) circus, and that it includes details of both of the messes he as well as the people he cares about were/are involved in with the main one, the most frustrating one, being babygate. Still there are bbg-free alternate interpretations that I’ll get to as well.

Kiwi lyric breakdown:

She worked her way through a cheap pack of cigarettes

One line in and the scene has already been set: there’s a girl and she got no class.

There’s a lot of play on words in Harry’s songwriting and this song is no exception. So I already want to highlight the choice of the word “cheap” here and how it might be deliberate as later on there’s also a “business”, an “I paid for it/I’m gonna pay for this”, even the “cha-ching!”. He’s leaving a trace of a theme: money 

Parallel: Night out and it's ten grand, headlines that I can't stand - Just Like You

Who is "She"? Let’s list a whole bunch of possible interpretations (and with that, that of the whole song): 

It’s one specific girl the entire time as I’ve seen some not very deep interpretations of it being about ~certain girls he has been associated with~. And I’m not going into this whatsoever because NO

Still on that one girl, and the song is exactly what it looks like: a girl in da club every boy has got his eyes on, maybe not even anyone specific but a nice concept for a song with not much behind it (again, no.)

Still one specific girl the entire time, but yaknow babygate and first girl in line by a mile is definitely Briana, now we’re getting somewhere

an accumulation of girls he or those close to him have encountered that have had alterior motives (like stunts). That some lines include details of one of them and others being inspired by others.

the industry / fame / behavior of those in that world as a whole. The not-so-glamorous side of it that the insider, Harry, is seeing. Something looking great but it being a facade. Rock and roll, living fast, no real glory, hard liquor mixed with a bit of intellect

Harry is She, Harry is always all the She’s (I’m not going into this but really you can kinda make it work)

Yeah so whoever she is, she's just smoking something and drinking something  and she's not very smart either, he’s really not trying to paint her in a good light here.

I'm setting myself up here for another parallel: "Now we're saying goodbye, Waving to the hard times, Smoke something, drink something" in We Made It

And all the boys, they were saying they were into it

This of course is a way of describing this girl’s appearance/behavior is generally considered to be desirable. But! The ambiguity in this line I love so much. You can easily accept this as him insinuating he’s into it like everyone else and he’s one of the boys if you want it to. Orrr iiisssiiittttt?? He’s not saying he’s one of those boys. (Later on there is that “but I’m into it”, I’ll get to it.) All the boys, ya know the boys who like the girls, are saying that's what they're into. I'm not into girls, I have no clue, but look all the boys were saying they were so apparently this is of interest.

Parallels: 

"The boys and the girls are in, I mess around with him/them, And I'm OK with it, I'm coming down, I figured out I kinda like it" - Medicine. I do think this is deliberate, although it doesn’t have to have the same meaning. But they seem to be written around the same time. It could be to weave songs (that were probably intended to be on the same album) together, just for the fun of it, or maybe even to use the same concepts for opposite meanings which I believe he’s done multiple times since (or all of the above, or none, who knows but the mermaid).

"told myself I kind of liked her" - Home. I know this line doesn’t look like much without context, but I think this line is vital to Home and its story, and that Home means a great deal to H, so, possible intentional parallel I’d say yes [please ask me about H vs home parallels] (this will come back)

And then another interpretation can be that “it” isn’t a woman at all, but a situation, a mindset, fame, this kinda lifestyle, *coughs* some “it” that has to end *coughs*, you name it.

Such a pretty face, on a pretty neck

Extension of the previous 2 lines, there's only a little bit of intellect up in that head on that neck there but at least it's something good to look at, or so I've been told.

Also it's really petty. To me this reads as ridiculously passive aggressive (not to mention the tone of this whole song, he's just aggressively screaming all of it), like he’s just focusing on the neck like he just wants to slit that throat.

She's driving me crazy, but I'm into it, but I'm into it

On surface level he's one of the boys that's into this girl right? That's the obvious. That's what the song seems to allude to, the thing you conclude as a casual listener: there's a girl he finds attractive, as does everyone else, she's driving him crazy with it and he's into it. So in part I think some of these lines are written with that concept in mind, in such a way that it supports both that idea and what the song is really about. Here we got a very easy line saying he’s finding her attractive basically, orrrrr iiisss ittttttt

First tho: more parallels on HS1 with this with in Only Angel & Carolina, we got more girls driving him crazy by just being and he's oh so extremely into it. (not including Woman as he doesn't really seem to be much into it there) And I totally interpret these songs in different ways, I’m just saying, casual-listener’s (or aggressive het harrie making everything about girls would count as well I guess) level it’s these themes again and again.

But then there's that second layer, that’s the driving me crazy maybe isn't a positive kind of crazy. And the part where he’s into it could mean many many many things

I’ve also seen yet another interpretation that being into it means that he’s stuck in the situation that’s frustrating the fk out of him, he’s part of it, whatever it is. And then lemme just add Golden: when it ends, don’t wanna let you know. SOTT: they told me that the end is near, he just wants to *** **

Another interpretation could be that he’s just going along with the boys, because they were just now saying they were into it, but then he’s backtracking with adding a kind of:

I'm kind of into it

Oop there it is again, the same parallels as mentioned above but it’s getting worse with 

“[all the boys said they were into her] I’m kind of into it” - Kiwi

"told myself I kind of liked her" - Home

kind of. In the context of liking girls. Reminds me of them answering interview questions with shit like "I guess you could say that yeah" like.. Yeah KiNdA. But, not really maybe.

I think songwriters sometimes are inspired by situations/events that don't really have a positive side to them but they add something positive to the song anyway ("but I like it" or they end on a twist where "but you came back to me" or someshit) otherwise the song isn't... fun... isn't attractive. The same goes for Stockholm Syndrome. So here it could be that this shit's just driving him off a cliff and he's losing it and that's just it, like he’s not into anything he’s just going insane but that won't do for a song, so he adds that he’s into that craziness.

Oh, I think she said "I'm having your baby, it's none of your business"

Here of course we need to talk about the main message of the song, the elephant in the room, considering he wrote this song in the same months his enemy and other half of the horrible conspiracy that ruined their friendship had a "baby" that was also a huge target of another horrible disrespectful conspiracy and it really does seem none of his business doesn't it? Sorry but if this song is about anything but that and the having a baby is an analogy of literally anything else, that's one hell of a poor word choice then isn't it? There must have been someone, just at any point any point at all in this whole songwriting process going don't you think this is gonna come off as .. ya know.. that? Don't you think there was someone, anyone, at any point going like, hey, so, you know the only baby born in your near vicinity as far as fans know recently is that kiddo from that dude people think is secretly actually dating you like you're not being the most considerate of that baby and that family there maybe like but idunno it’s your choice. ?????

Aaaanyway, lyrically it's smart again: he goes "oh I think she said" as it's a double-triple-down on the I got nothing to do with it: “I think", like I don't even know, "she said”, so it's a woman saying something to someone, not even necessarily to him, it's like a telephone game indirect uh I guess that's what's going on. And then literally "it's none of your business", the 3rd indicator that the "you" (person “she” is telling she’s having his baby to) as well as the "I" (singer), whether that's the same person or not, got very little to do with the endeavour.

And not just that, but the way he decided to describe it's got nothing to do with him / he's got no say in the matter is interesting too: “it's none of your business”. That's it. It's business, it's a business, it's money. Someone is having someone's baby and it's another person’s business. It's a moneymaker. That's what it's for. Case closed.

Now okay let's just consider alternate explanations, let's just consider he doesn't give a poopy about babygate, this got nothing to do with that, then what is it? (also always consider it can be multiple of these things, really why not both, why not all) "having your baby" could also be a way to describe things being said about him in the media, as it’s just one of those celebrity rumors that fly around. (How many times has Jennifer Aniston been pregnant again?) I tried. And it even makes sense. I can try again: it could also be that “your baby” is the records he makes, and that “the suits” or whatever you wanna call it then take it and turn it into their business, take something he “birthed” to make a profit. And very successfully I might add. Both of these are entirely valid explanations and do make a lot of sense to me but also both of these could have been described in many other ways, yet he chose this. As I said above, if he meant either of these and definitely not bbg, that I’m wrong about everything and whatever narrative was being pushed about Louis’ life at the time (and still) is actually real (but I don’t think it is) then what an orrible orrible word choice this is.

Ok imma bring so many interpretations into this it’s a mess and imma pretend turning it into a list is somehow fixing that here you go:

First and easiest is that it’s just a coincidence and H is just totally awkward random, is that NY’s the place where you go when you want to make it big, where you got aspirations to be somebody, where you go on your chase for fame. I rarely think name-dropping people and places are to be taken literal, especially not in Harry's vague mess so I don't really consider "He was in New York with a girl and that girl told him that she's having his baby" as an option here.

“Jacked up” is just a way to say someone’s full on drugs, so this person or lifestyle is never sober, so yeah themes here are money, drugs, and alcohol, which I think would describe the musician/hollywood lifestyle. There have been and are many many many many musicians out there writing about that life in this way.

Did I say she’s always full of drugs yet? Lemme just emphasize: nose always backed up

He really didn't back down with the the cokesniffing sniff right there in the song either, in case it wasn’t clear what that nose was doing.

He keeps describing this woman who is claiming to be pregnant as taking substances you shouldn’t be taking when pregnant. Possibly helping to describe she actually isn’t.

A person’s chase for fame (NY mention) just consisting of partying, just doing coke basically all the time (always jacked up / nose always backed up).

There's some HS1 song-linking going on here:

Ever Since New York. Same as in ESNY, he drops “New York”, then drops a more specific well-known part of NY (Brooklyn/Holland Tunnel). He only uses NY twice in his songwriting, here and ESNY, which are snuggling on the tracklist. Got a couple of theories here. (disclaimer again, if you think ESNY is about his stepfather and don’t feel like it’s up for debate, that’s fine, stay there and just skip this bit. If you’re open to alternate interpretations read this) So he's going insane in Kiwi and then he hits his lowest low right after in ESNY. I think first of all using the same keywords across songs on an album just helps create a whole, he weaves these songs together. Or it’s worse and the NY in ESNY = the NY in Kiwi, again again that sounds like ridiculous farfetched bs if you think ESNY must be about dealing with bad news about a family member and kiwi is definitely not that and yep here’s that link again but I don’t think it is, I think that in both songs “New York” describes either fame or is a nudge to another stunt.

Ok now for the next line

When she's alone, she goes home to a cactus

Imma drag so many things into this just... like take a break, get some water, this is a mess. HAVE FUN. Anyway so. many. interpretations:

This girl when alone goes home to a dry prickly ornament. Like she's got nothing there, really only just a plant and not even one that requires love and attention either.

This is pretty much telling that she's not going home with him / he's not going home with her right? If this song is about some attractive femme fatale that Harry's into and has had interactions with to the point where she could be telling him she's having his baby, then, what's this sentence doing here? Like what's the point of this sentence if it's about that.

Song parallels:

It's kind of the opposite of Home. You'll never feel like you're alone, I make this feel like home.

She’s alone <> Harry’s never to be felt like he’s alone She goes home to a cactus [her home’s empty] <> Harry has someone making whatever *this* is feel like home [his home’s not empty] (and yes that’s a blatant assumption Home is directed at Harry, to me that was already clear and then he just piled on Canyon Moon on top of that so eh)

Harry seems to thrive in wet, just, at all times throughout all his work. He's consistently putting himself or things he cares about in water, there's this just e x c e s s i ve need to put water everywhere, to be just a nautical anchor holding looking for his sailorman diving into deep ends, plunging in, seemingly preferring to drown over any other type of hurt, not to mention the only depiction of his uh mate in his work is a fish, it just goes on, everything is wet wet wet. So yeah cactus? Not his thing. Not his place, not his home, he got nothing to do with a cactus. Harry is kelp. Seagrass. A water lily. A lotus. The opposite of a cactus.

But I got another interpretation. Soooo cacti are associated with... how do I say this, dry desert-typey landscapes... otherwise barren lands right?. That, how would you say, don’t need much fertile grounds. That don’t .. eh... Barren.

The black dress can also refer to a lyric (I’m aware little black dress exists but not sure if I can do anything with that info; also might as well state here that any lyric may refer to another lyric anyway) or a specific person / situation

Then I do have to mention there has been someone parading around with baby bumps in black dresses not that long before this was written... But I am very weary of these kinda pretty literal interpretations, he does seem petty af here so wouldn’t put it past him.

“she’s such an actress” is a good way to say she’s faking it, tying in with the previous line, how many ways is that now you can interpret things here as him saying someone’s saying she’s pregnant but she isn’t actually? So just a little recap:

When she’s alone she goes home to a cactus, in a black dress, she’s such an actress = She’s faking it in a black dress and when there’s nobody around she’s clearly not pregnant. hmm.

Moving on, 3rd verse:

She sits beside me like a silhouette

Some girl-im-associated-with-but-idk-her vibes. This makes me think of photos of public figures supposedly having whatever type of relations and photos of them are placed side by side in articles and such.

It’s also pretty much in line with the “she’s driving me crazy but I’m into it” interpretation of not being able to escape this situation he’s in, he’s into it, part of it, she’s always there like a shadow (silhouette beside me) and it’s frustrating the fk out of him.

BUT I GOT ANOTHER INTERPRETATION AND THIS IS GONNA GET A BIT WILD and nasty:

Silhouette/shadow/synonyms of these can also be analogies of public images vs their true selves, they’re two dimensional mirrors/reflections, not them but look like them etc. But I don’t see how that makes all too much sense in the context of the rest of the song unless this verse and this verse only is doing something else entirely. Which is possible? It’s a mess, but here we go:

Then with that said I can bring in some more parallels: this kinda somewhat mirrors “Who’s that shadow holding me hostage” - Stockholm Syndrome (it’s only shadow vs silhouette really) and even “beside you I’m a loaded gun” - No Control which.. I mean only works if you view those songs as being related (which I do) and also become a bit less of a joke when you get to the next line:

Hard candy dripping on me 'til my feet are wet

Oh so Hard like the loaded gun and then candy like the sweet treat that is “Sweet where you lay / Sweet and Sour, I devour” - No Control?

and it’s also.... dripping things... onto his feet.. Yaknow.. the ... medicinecandy that’s dripping out of.. something..hard... throw in a foot fetish while we’re at it

With the amount of lyrics (and what he’s said in interviews, and just done, just behavior in general) that can double as something dirty I wouldn’t be suprised. But does it fit the song? I guess it could. It could be like Stockholm Syndrome / No Control and even Kill My Mind and Back To You, which you can all read as having that double meaning of being stuck / not having control over the difficult and frustrating situation they’re in (being the in the crazy music industry / PR shit / fame / you name it) but also about a uh..? ~not boring~? let’s put it like that? relationship, or even both simulaneously: Like this shit is killing me but ~the things we do behind closed doors~ serve as an antidote and help me feel better. Maybe, maybe not. None of these lines are all too convincingly alluding to that on their own but there seems to be a bit of a pattern here right? she says while trying to ignore the 6 years worth of footage of them being nasty right in front of our salads.

Also “till my feet are wet”, they were dry but the hard candy is making them wet. Like I said before harry’s thing is wet, which helps the idea this is a positive bit right? Possibly? I need this distraction from this situation until my feet are wet, till im comfortably put back in my element which is water. 

Harry’s somewhere out there laughing, literally meaning some random girl just dropped some candy on his toe and here I’m coming in with 28 diffferent interpretations....

Aaaaaanyway stepping away from that wild stuff, back to Kiwi alone. Since there’s such a big theme of substance (ab)use, I didn’t even go over the more obvious “candy” definitely at the very least doubling as a synonym for drugs again (and with that “hard candy” being hard drugs).

It’s also a movie and a whole different meaning there I don’t wanna get into

Also I think it’s funny that he mentions a cactus and then wet feet because that’s what it’s called when you overwater your plants and killing them that way, the fast route to killing a cactus via rootrot.

Casual’s listener interpretation I’m not even sure is worth mentioning, that a girl is literally on top of him.

And of course it just fits with that concept that she’s driving him insane, that she’s just all over his mind, that the situation is consuming him.

Another interpretation could be that her name is linked to his everywhere he goes (thinking about 1D times where interviewers kept bringing up girls he was associated with over and over again).

Or another clever wordplay, because while prostitute means “to offer for sexual intercourse in exchange for pay”, it also means “to put oneself to an unworthy or corrupt use for personal or financial gain“, for the 28th time insinuating that this girl is doing classless shady shit. (I hope it’s clear I’m not saying sexwork is something negative, it’s definitely not)

The wordplays are coming out of my pores by now, so here he flips the words around, going from “as if I was paying for it” to “I’m going to be paying for this”. This could be “You thought I was already suffering the consequences for this no no that’s nothing, I’m still going to” Or it’s even literal and he means he’s going to have to be putting money into something. Or you know totally awkward random who nows.

I personally choose to interpret this line as I'm gonna have to face some kinda backlash with this song, people are gonna be talking about this in a way others are not gonna like, yep is gonna have some effect oopsie but I'm gonna do it anyway.

Possible meanings:

Kiwi, the bird:

Bird is a word for “girl”, I don’t recall if he has addressed girls as birds before but Louis definitely does (it’s a common way to say girl in northern england if I’m not mistaken).

It’s also more specifically a bird from New Zealand, so there’s some interpretations that he’s talking about certain people that are from NZ, like Dan Wattpad, but I’m not that set on that idea.

A Kiwi’s a flightless bird and he has used (not) flying/being in the sky, being birds, and bird(cage) tats, so it could signify once again not being able to fly away and stuck in this mess ('but I'm into it')

This kind of “weirdness” makes me think of one of his favorite songs, Flowers in the Window, which has a very particular music video (with pregnant women no less) that just descends into an almost psychedelic weirdness (thanks @wishingicouldfly​​ for talking about this hah) and doesn’t seem to have much to do with the song itsself, or does it? 

Maybe first the buildup to the MV, the teasers on social media, in order:

Interpretation, I guess. Although, it isn’t much, not compared to the lyric insanity above:

I’d like to think he just went fuck it I want a cakefight and puppies and so it shall be. Lighten the mood of what has fueled Kiwi into existence, turning it into something cute, innocent, sweet, etc.

But ok I’m calling this the big talk so I gotta go places with this, one clear theme is kids, human kids and puppies. They were only kids trying to work it out WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME STOP (do have a parallels post about this tho) with a very obvious younger version of him, the little long haired girl, made extra double triple clear by wearing the same suit as him, this is long-haired harry. Another clear theme is fighting, half of the MV is spent preparing for battle and then it descends into chaos. So this could be the most lighthearted analogy you’ll ever see of well.. his/their ongoing battle with *all the bullshit*.

I also want to share this post about his live performance of Kiwi. I do think he pours out a certain type of energy that isn’t comparable to anything else, something that doesn’t happen with any other song. But I haven’t had the opportunity just yet to experience this myself, of course there are tons of videos, but I’m sure it’s different, so I’ll let that post tell it all. 

Anyway, last point, about him singing it live, is how he decided to end HSLOT on July 14, 2018 (July 14 you say, end on July 14? really? you wanna end the tour, end it, on july 14? okay. okay. no. that’s fine. yeah this is fine too. oh yeah just bzz again in 2020 why don’t you. It’s fiiiine), and end it on singing Kiwi 3x. His entire god damn tour he ends it on screaming the “I’m having your baby it’s none of your business” song three times in a row on the three year “anniversary” of the start of babygate?

1D Media Ltd: Contingent Liability

So, @towlersnow shared this update about 1D media’s financial statements which included information about the clearing of a contingent liability of £24,7M that has been on the financial statements since 2015.

One of my mutuals who’s an insurance defense attorney messaged me with some detailed explanation of what this means. This is long, but really interesting (IMO) in how it pertains to the band. I’ve bolded the section that’s specifically about 1D, the rest is essentially explanation about what a contingent liability is, and what the clearing means.

Contingent liabilities are defined as "existing conditions, situations, or circumstances involving uncertainty about possible future liabilities. These uncertainties will be resolved in the future when one or more event occurs or fails to occur." Essentially, a contingent liability is a potential future loss that a company is facing. The contingent liability will not become a present, payable loss until some triggering event happens (or fails to happen).

A really common example of this is a car accident. Driver A and Driver B get into a car accident. Driver A is at fault. Driver B is injured. Driver B's injuries represent a contingent liability to Driver A's insurance company, as under the insurance policy they issued to Driver A, if Driver B makes a claim or brings a lawsuit, the insurance company will be responsible for paying the damages owed to Driver B, and for paying the legal fees Driver A incurs resolving the issue.

Contingent liabilities are categorized as probable, reasonably possible, or remote. A remote contingent liability is one with no more than a slight likelihood of becoming a loss payable. A probable remote contingency is one that is likely to become a loss payable. Reasonably possible contingent possibilities have a likelihood somewhere in between. If a company has a contingent liability that is probable and that the amount of which can be reasonably estimated, the company has to disclose that contingent liability in their financial statements.

The idea is that probable contingent liabilities pose a threat to the company's assets, and without them reflected in the financial statement, the asserted financial stability of the company will be misleading. So in the context of our car accident, at the point Driver A calls their insurance company and says "hey, I got into an accident, the other driver was hurt, we exchanged insurance information but I don't know anything else," that contingent liability is remote and the value of it is not able to be estimated. But if Driver B makes a formal claim, or files a lawsuit, the contingent liability is probable, and the insurance company has to figure out a way to estimate the potential amount and, in most cases, set that money aside so that it is available for payment when the time comes.

Construction contracts are another area where this is common. A general contractor will hire a subcontractor with an agreement to pay the sub a certain amount of money at the end of the job, but with the understanding that construction is unpredictable and prone to problems, so it is likely that the subcontractor will end up incurring costs over and above their contract amount. The general contractor will set aside an additional amount they think is reasonably likely to cover the subcontractor's additional costs. Big companies usually have reserve accounts where they just keep money set aside to cover any and all contingent liabilities that may arise, as opposed to setting aside money for each contingent liability as it comes up.

So in the context of 1D, their financial statement reads "a contingent liability which has been provided and reported for since 2015 continues to exist in relation to a matter in dispute which is the subject of litigation by the company. If the company is unsuccessful in the proposed litigation, the maximum obligation is estimated to be approximately 24.7m including interest. However, the company has indemnity against third parties in relation to such an event and the amount which should be reimbursed to the company is estimated to be approximately 18.4m."

There are a few things that I think are important to note here. (1) the contingent liability definitely involves a lawsuit, but we don't know if someone sued 1D media, or if they sued someone else, their disclosure only vaguely references a matter in dispute which is in litigation. (2) this is a long term contingent liability - 2015 was the first financial statement it appeared on, and it wasn't gone until 2020. That plus the amount (24.7m or $29,174,405 according to the converters I use) tells me this was a big deal, it likely wasn't an issue where a songwriter felt they didn't get their due or something similar.

It's likely this was an ugly, knock down drag out fight (and the timing coinciding with the hiatus raises a few questions for me but that's all speculation so I won't go into it). And (3) the fact that indemnity in the amount of 18.4m exists implicates a third party. It may be an insurance company, but I doubt it. My gut instinct is that there was another industry party involved who has liability to 1D media. God only knows what this third party is, or why they're being dragged into this. But they exist. And that's a pretty significant amount of liability for the third party - it ends up being about 75% of the estimated total. That's a deeply, deeply involved third party.

(my instinct is that this isn't insurance because of the amounts. 18.4m is a pretty specific number, if it was an insurance issue it (a) wouldn't have taken so long to resolve, as an insurance defense attorney I can tell you we never let cases drag that long, because the insurance companies hate it, and (b) the company would likely cover it all, or they'd cover up to a more round number (i.e. a 20m limit of liability). 18.4m is a number that suggests another party exists, has been implicated via potential bad acts, and is under a contract that monetizes their actions in some way with a formula that spit out 18.4m as their share of the liability. All of that, taken together, makes me think that whatever happened was personal and ugly.

On a practical level, the clearance of that liability from the financial statement likely doesn't indicate any real life losses or gains for shareholders of 1D media. The 24.7m has been "provided and reported for since 2015," meaning that money is sitting in reserves somewhere, and if it has to get paid out, the eventual 18.4m they recoup will go back into the reserves account or, if they didn't end up having to pay, the money stays in the account for the next liability that arises. There's no way to know for sure what happened, but I hope you enjoyed this (ridiculously long, god I'm SO SORRY I really wrote you an entire novel) lesson on contingent liabilities.

The end result is that it was resolved somehow. Whether that resolution was 1DM paying some or all of the 24.7m we don’t have any way of knowing. But it kind of doesn’t matter (except that I really want to know) because it doesn’t have THAT big of an impact on the overall financial well-being of the company or the likely payouts or stock values to holders.

The fact that the liability is noted as having been provided for since 2015 means somewhere 1DM had an account that held at least 24.7m, so that money wasn’t really anything they were missing or trying to figure out how to cover. If 1DM ended up paying out some or all of it, they’d turn around and get the 18.4m from the indemnity party and just toss that back into the reserves account, and if the 18.4m wasn’t enough to cover all that they paid they’d just write off the excess and be done. And if the situation resolved in a manner that means 1DM didn’t pay a cent, the money stays in reserves. It still doesn’t become part of their operating capital or anything. When the company is liquidated someday that money will come into play, but for now the fact that this resolved and the fact that we don’t know how it resolved doesn’t actually change the financial landscape of the company much.

hello! the amazing @callouiee tagged me in their post spelling their url with songs they like for me to do the same if i wanted and i thought it would be fun! they made theirs l&h/larrie related but i have such a long url that i think I’m going to use my favorite songs as well! this will also give me an excuse to gush about some of my fav songs

so i wrote the above paragraph and then tried to find and narrow down songs which proved to be very difficult lol. i probably made it harder on myself than needed bc i wanted to choose best and most perfect songs but there are just too many. this is the best list i could come up with, but i feel pretty good with it! if anyone ever wants to talk music, i’m so down i have so many favorites.

p.s. i really truly did gush about every song i’m so sorry for how long this is

s- Satellite (Harry Styles) this song is my baby. i love her with every fiber of my being. i have dance parties by myself in my apartment when this song comes on i literally can’t get enough of it. i honestly thought matilda would be my fav song off harry’s house cause like... it’s matilda, but this is the song i come back to most often from that album.

u- U.N.I (Ed Sheeran) okay so i have so many distinct memories listening to this song on the bus to/from middle school. anything from ed’s + album was my favorite. his stuff from that time used to be my favorite music along with 1D. i thought i was so cool when i memorized the rap part lol

n- No Children (The Mountain Goats) i will admit i did find this song through the tiktok trend but i absolutely loved that trend, i thought it was so cute. i listened to the full song shortly after discovering the song and it shortly became my second most listened to song of last year. w/o getting into too much detail, this song holds a special place in my therapy journey lol 

f- Fine Line (Harry Styles) what is there to say about her? she probably holds the biggest spot in music related to my healing journey. i fully annotated her once through the lens of my own therapy and healing journey. she means a lot a lot to me

l- Like Real People Do (Hozier) i am a hozier slut and i’m not afraid to admit it. i love anything this man puts out. sometimes i listen to his music like i’m a thirsty begger and his music is the only water that’s been offered to me in weeks. i could have put any of his songs on this list and you would have gotten the same reaction out of me. he makes me feel feral and ethereal at the same time.

o- Outer Space/Carry on (5SOS) god this song will never not get me. this song was my fine line of my middle school/high school years. if i ever see this song live i’m pretty sure i’ll die on the spot. i have a half-ish sleeve tattoo planned around this song. there’s like five songs on this list that i have tattoos planned around but none of them as big as this one. everything about this song is just perfect.

w- Written All Over Your Face (Louis Tomlinson) do i even need to say anything about this one? it’s been on repeat since the album came out. it’s literally so good and i know it’s everyone’s favorite but it’s for a damn good reason. have you heard louis’ voice?????? literally perfection absolute bop and i can’t stop listening to it. this is louis’ sound and i’m so proud of him

e- Emotions (5SOS) any time i make a new playlist of things i’m currently listening to to have one shuffle/repeat, i put this entire album on there. i feel like the more i listen to it, the more addicted i get. also, Liz told me this song was very me codded and i feel like that’s so true. i’m always in my emotions lol. also also, that little clap/slap that happens every so often in this song gives me an unnecessary amount of serotonin. 

r- Right Now (1D) i also could have put any one direction song on this list but there’s something about this song that has always had a grip on my brain. immediate performance mode whenever this song comes on. they’re my boys. my babies. i’ve been a fan for a decade now which is absolutely wild. i miss them

s- Spaces (1D) this might have to be in my top 5 favorite one d songs. i don’t know if i even have an actual top 5 but if i did, this song would be in it. i feel like i’m ascending whenever i listen to this song; it’s similar vibes to satellite in dance party mode for me if that makes sense lol i can’t help but move whenever i hear this song

o- Only the Brave (Louis Tomlinson) again, does this need any explanation? there was a while when i couldn’t listen to this song bc it hurt my closeted heart too much. it still makes me sad but also very optimistic. i hope i can hear this song live one day surrounded by fellows queers who’ve also found their family through the boys. it doesn’t make it a solo song anymore then does it? we’re a family; more of a family than any church i’ve been a part of. 

m- Mum (Luke Hemmings) another album where i could put literally any song on this list bc i love them all so much. this song, however, beats the others out ever so slightly as being my favorite. i’m noticing a pattern with my favorite songs: satellite, spaces, mum. they all have a really big build up to an absolute cathartic release later on in the song. mum does give me church song vibes but in the least song ruining way possible. this song actually inspired me to make a playlist of songs that make me feel like im ascending whenever i listen to them

e- Egg and Soldier (Cosmo Sheldrake) okay okay okay i know you’re thinking that this song came super duper out of left field and is really weird and i definitely agree but here me out. all of his songs are super fun and kinda weird but so so cool and unique and unpredictable. i have yet to come across a song of his i don’t love. they all make me feel so connected to my inner child/the creativity i pushed away for so long.

t- To Be Alone (Hozier) again, i’m a hozier slut. this might be my favorite song of his but i’m unsure if i can even pick a favorite hozier song. that slide on ‘feeeeeels good’ gets me every single time. i’m weak in the knees i’m obsessed. the grungy, dirty electric guitar???? i can’t it’s too much 

i- If I Could Fly (One Direction) i couldn’t not add this one. it’s iconic and makes me cry maybe half of the time i listen. who let them write, record, and release this song? it’s literally so raw and vulnerable and i know i’ve written some pretty raw poetry but i don’t think i’ve ever written anything on this level. like ?????? i forget this song is a real song they released and not something a fanfic writer made up

m- Matter of Time (Ashton Irwin) god this album destroys me in the best way possible. and this song???? literally speaks to me and my soul. this is another one i want to get a tattoo of. it’s just like a warm hug from an older sibling/older friend. everything’s gonna be okay bud

e- evermore (Taylor Swift) I do love me some good taylor swift, especially folklore and evermore. i don’t think this one is my favorite, that’s probably the lakes, but i do remember hearing it for the first time and absolutely loosing it at the word switch at the end of the song. it still holds a special place in my heart for the hopefulness it’s able to give me whenever i don’t have a lot of it.

s- Sunflower Vol. 6 (Harry Styles) and we’re ending on the song that i wish i could be. if i could have the vibes of any song it would be this one. i’m one of those obnoxious people that make sunflowers their whole personality and whenever harry released this song i went feral for it. i love her so much and i hope i grow up and make her proud.

this is random but I think it’s funny, so I was lurking some Harry blogs that are literally dedicated to disproving his relationship with Olivia is fake, and it’s just so hilarious to me, like they literally think every relationship that Harrys been in that was high profile is PR, like for one blog I asked a general question on anonymous that was like “do you guys think haylor was PR purely based off the Central Park and NYE stuff or is there something else” and someone responded and linked a video off tik tok from some girl that had a third eye view ig from the Central Park thing and they were like, yeah Harry was away somewhere and Taylor was taking pictures with fans and they were only at the zoo for 10 minutes and said the paparazzi were strategically placed, and they were like “if you were in a relationship why were the paps there and why were you only there for only 10 minutes? PR?!!!” And I’m like……uh probably bc theyre high profile celebrities in a public place in one of the most well known cities in America and ppl recognized who they were, followed them around and somebody tipped off the paparazzi??? Like are y’all dumb?? 1+1=2. Like I’m not ignorant or blind to the fact celebrities do enter pr relationships for attention and financial gain, or that they call the paparazzi on themselves for set up scenarios to push a narrative to the media. But considering what WE know (we meaning the ones that know the tea) it’s literally not rocket science why they were photographed and their logic is so stupid it’s funny, like most of their logic is purely them looking way too into stuff and trying to play detective gadget, like one of them even had “degree in journalism” as if that automatically makes them an expert in PR and relations with celebrities like girl….

Oh and also they all love to push this idea that Harry just gets dragged by the collar in to PR relationships, and it’s always one sided, and he always looks miserable and the girl is the only one benefiting and Harry never acknowledges them and my thing is Harry is grown, yall are treating this man like he doesn’t have bodily and mental autonomy as if he doesn’t choose to be in these relationships with ppl, not saying any of them are fake or not, but my thing is y’all stan Harry based of his authenticity correct? So why’re you stanning somebody that you wholeheartedly believe consciously chooses to be in supposed fake relationships (apparently since he was 18), and when he gets negative attention for it wanna be like “aw poor baby, that fake relationship really took a toll on him” and I’m like that’s HIS own fault, like y’all constantly demonize every woman he’s with, calling them derogatory names under the guise of “she’s actually a terrible person so it’s justified” when most of the time it’s just misogyny. Like with haylor they’ll be like well Taylor benefitted bc she got material to make an album and I’m like you bitches must be dumb and have selective memory, like she was relentlessly degraded and harassed by not only 1D stans but the media and her peers to the point where she felt like she had to be single for a yeah so she didn’t get called a slut, like they really don’t know how bad that mentally fucked with her resulting in her having an eating disorder and her constantly being self conscious about her current relationship and thinks every person that enters a relationship with her doesn’t want to be with her, but yeah it’s poor Harry cus he supposedly looks miserable standing next to someone he chose to be with and chose to be public with. Sorry for the rant but uh whew 😅

THE POINTS YOU MADE. Whew. You stole most of what I had to say right out of the orifices of my brain, but I so agree. It’s such a ridiculous concept that every move celebrities make relationship-wise is somehow related to PR, as well as sad/disturbing and extremely insulting. I’ve seen people who are fans of Harry and/or Taylor say this shit too, and I’m like

1) Do you realize these two celebrities have always been very famous? They do not NEED PR, paparazzi were following them everywhere anyway

2) You’re attacking their integrity and saying they would sell themselves like this for albums. You’re cheapening their artistry by saying it comes down to PR.

3) I have to wonder what these people think is “real” if what they consider fake is just...two people on a date trying to be normal despite of the high-profile nature of their lives. Part of me questions the integrity of their own relationships, if they even have any (majority of the scrutiny comes from jealous or disillusioned “fans” projecting their own fucked up sexual fantasies involving themselves or someone else with Harry/Taylor. It’s very hard for them to come to terms with the fact that these people have real lives & that their disturbing fantasies are fictional, so they...just don’t. They find pseudo-truths in everything to cater to their fanatical lies. I once had someone say their PR class in university used Haylor as an example (the fuck kind of university they were going to I never got to know)...They scream “fake news” and go running in the opposite direction).

I totally agree with you when you say they probably left places in 10 minutes because there was a shit ton of paparazzi and they were two very young people in the spotlight trying to mediate in that grey area between “I really like this person, and I don’t want to hide because it makes me feel like I’m doing something incriminating and wrong,” but also “the relationship is fragile and we have to protect it from ruthless people who think our stardom gives them monopoly over our lives.”

Celebrities! They’re just like us.
