no wait i need to tell you guys something funny. so me and my partner moved into a new apartment like...half a year ago. all has been well etc etc but two days ago there was a letter left at our door (literally just. resting against the door). it was a noise complaint (!!) from our neighbours. i won't put a picture here, but let me tell you - the contents of it? hilarious. they wrote things like "noise from your property" and "preventing us from enjoying out home" and "we hope you do not wish us to be unhappy" and so on. but here's the kicker (or multiple): they outlined examples of the "noise" we've been making - one being a 'motor like' sound, which, first of all, could be appliances and just something that…happens, however, they specifically mentioned hearing this at 6am on the day of the letter when we were both, guess what? very much asleep! the second example they gave was screaming children. you must be able to guess by this point, but we don't have kids. did they try to talk to us before this even once, you might be asking. no! we're home pretty consistently as only one of my jobs requires me to be there in person and it's mostly when my partner has days off. oh, but that's not all! they then threatened us to take legal action if we did not "cooperate". and the cherry on top? they didn't tell us who they were. no flat number, no email, no phone number - nothing. we have an idea of who it is just based on proximity and we've tried to get a hold of them, but they haven't been around (…or just haven't answered the door). and yet….this is not the end….because they left another letter, the same one, but in our post box this time. i'm sorry. did you expect us to "cooperate"? did you expect an answer? because….perhaps….just maybe….you didn't give us any information to work with beyond threats.

I am always willing and bless you for giving me a chance to talk about it.

While I love their dynamic in general, my favorite way to think about them is in a semi-canon “adults navigating genuine feelings and their lives” kind of way. It’s after the War, they’re both living their lives and putting it all back together again in a world that is rapidly changing around them.

Lee has always worn his heart on his sleeve and has loved before, but it lead him nowhere. He’s moved on from his past crushes, but they still stay with him. He is working as a bodyguard to the Konoha representative of the Shinobi Union, and is just trying to find his place as a shinobi in a world that increasingly has no use for him.

Omoi, meanwhile, has never really been in love in a way he hasn’t talked himself out of, and is not handling his new life as a representative well at all. The War very much lives with him every minute of his life and combined with the stress of holding the Shinobi Union together in its infancy, it’s driving him to madness.

The two run into each other (almost literally — Lee was out for a morning run and Omoi was lost in his own head) and sort of hit it off. The two have mutual friends and end up in each others’ company more and more often. Lee invites Omoi out to do his favorite activities (exercising and eating well) more and more often, and encourages Omoi to persevere even in the face of things that overwhelm him. Meanwhile, Omoi presents Lee with fanatic possibilities and Lee finds himself pondering the politics going on around him, and gives more thought to what use he could have in the world.

Eventually, the two decide to date and that comes with its own set of challenges when Omoi is promoted to Darui’s aide and is taken off his duties as Shinobi Union representative. The two have to navigate being from different villages and having responsibilities while also trying to make it work, because they’ve realized they have something special and it was worth going the extra mile for.

And then magically Metal comes along and they lived happily ever after, the end.

He didn't want to do this in front of someone else. Didn't want to show this...this vulnerability. Weakness. He loved Steven and Jake, really, he did, but he'd never switched in front of anyone that wasn't Layla, and even then, never because he'd been triggered. Bristling with Jack so close, watching him, he almost said something biting. Almost. The other man moved away before he got the chance. Good. It was bad enough that Jack was here, in the first place (Marc would have left if he could, holed himself away to do this in private, but he could scarcely move, all of his energy being put into breathing and trying to stay present). Marc really didn't need him hovering, as well.

Eventually, he drifted back, let go of the control he held so dear because he couldn't... He just couldn't anymore. As he sank back into their headspace (where it was safe), Steven stepped forward to take his place. For a long few moments, he didn't move, just blinked slowly at the floor as he adjusted. When he did finally lift his head, he looked around, brow furrowed, to try to figure out where he was and what exactly was going on. What'd sent Marc into such a spiral. The tension his body held eased a bit when he spotted a somewhat familiar face.

He didn't know the other man very well, but Jake trusted him. Considering Jake rarely trusted anyone—and that he'd trusted him enough to tell him about their disorder—that said a lot about Jack's character. That was good enough for Steven. There didn't seem to be anyone else nearby, at the moment, so Steven didn't bother trying to mask, when he spoke.

"Hello, Jack."

Yes, it was...uncomfortable, embarrassing, knowing Jack had seen them in such a state, and perhaps impersonating Marc would have allowed him to pretend the switch hadn't happened at all, but something had upset Marc. Steven wanted to know what.

Holy shit I love your Dirk interpretations, it's so true and I could talk about this shit forever. I feel like another part of his character that people seem to forget (along with Roxy for some reason) is that he's from the future in solitude in an apocalyptic wasteland. I just see that part of his character always removed which is disappointing because I feel like that's a pretty big part, especially regarding his themes around technology, his brother's theme of Time, his own isolation, and how he plays in the vastness of the universe and spacetime.

But absolutely. I certainly understand where the lack of discussion over his isolation + upbringing comes from, considering a majority of the fanbase that I have seen builds their ideas based on their own version of postcanon. I’m not entirely sure how that would be fixed, but certainly even in the somewhat recent past I would see a lot more content regarding his upbringing both literally and symbolically. I don’t have much to add regarding the things you’ve mentioned, because they just are what they are. Dirk being confined to a singular room left to him by a father figure he never met, in a future where the only other person left on the planet is someone he cannot pursue a relationship of because of himself, with purely 3 robots to keep him companion, one being an exact replica of his own brain who is *also* trapped inside a pair of glasses, is about as literal as it gets to me.

The contrast to me involving the flooded, organic world in comparison to the little speckle of Dirk’s apartment packed with the dude and his technics is not only a representation of his isolation and entrapment within himself, but also of his lack of control. I think his obsession with & themes of control are a direct product in the case of Dirk specifically *of* this kind of upbringing. His themes of technology are also related to his themes around control. So much of his character is actually revolved around this to me like so much. Dirk is so deeply disconnected from humanity in every way and so much of his character + symbolism is based around that.

It doesn’t even have to be about the symbolism or anything though. It’s just pretty *interesting* in the literal sense that he lives in the middle of the ocean in the future. There’s not only a lot to theorise on to do with his young life there, but on how it might affect him in the way he acts for the rest of his life. The latter part is probably what I see mentioned the most by people talking about Dirk regarding this, I’m surprised I don’t see more discussion on the former too though. I really ought to actually talk more about Homestuck stuff on here. I will do it myself.

Roxy & Dirk’s relationship is largely ignored though because there is a narrative a certain demographic spreads that Dirk resented and blamed Roxy for her interest in him, and thus too many people believe that their relationship was or would continue to be an abusive one. Realistically, I believe it’s important to acknowledge that the way Roxy treated Dirk regarding his homosexuality wasn’t right while still acknowledging the obvious amount of respect and admiration Dirk had for Roxy. I mean we have a huge piece of dialogue from their post trickster mode conversations on the quest beds from Dirk purely stating how he feels about Roxy that people completely ignore somehow. I think this usually happens to characters that are women though. I know everyone says it, but it is true. Jane gets the exact same treatment of boiling her down to solely her negative aspects. The things I see completely mischaracterising both of them are horrific.

I mean how much more explicit can it get that their relationship is obviously very important to Dirk? But I digress. I think the best or I should say “most interesting” interpretations of their relationship usually come from DirkRoxy shippers actually.

I would be interested to hear about Dirk’s relation to his brother’s theme of time though. I don’t have any thoughts on this and I don’t recall ever hearing anyone talk about it before. If you or anyone else would be willing to enlighten me I’d be thrilled.

my favorite thing about the ranchers will forever be that their entire relationship was built on Trust. they failed 2/3 of scotts couples games but they objectively did the best out of all the pairs because they never got mad or annoyed when the other failed

tango couldve gotten mad at jimmy for getting hit by the goat but he just laughed it off. jimmy couldve gotten mad at tango for not catching him with the water at the fall but they both just joked about it instead. tango even WILLINGLY let them both get down to half a heart in the powdered snow but jimmy never picked the snow up with the bucket, and even asked tango if he was proud of him for that which he WAS. ("did you appreciate that i didnt pick it up?" "i appreciate that trust! that says a lot, my friend!")

i feel like theyre genuinely one of if not THE healthiest relationship in the entirety of the life series cause they never got mad at eachother for any of their faults. tango lost their green life episode one in a stupid way; out of everyone on the server jimmy had the most reason to leave his soulmate but he DIDNT. jimmy forgave him for dying the second tango explained what happened (he even made digs at himself??? ("i feel like im gonna die in the future and youre gonna have to take the punishment of it")) and they recovered the best they couldve in that situation

jimmy even trusted tango enough to let him go into the Exact Same Cave he JUST died in to recover his stuff and later let him go down to the deep dark alone to Intentionally Summon A Warden when if it was anyone else they wouldve not let tango out of their sight for the whole season. hell, tango held it against himself for dying more than jimmy did. they basically just met after being strangers for two seasons yet they already trust eachother more than some season-long alliances

long story short, the ranchers are everything to me and i love them very much

Got nothing to post this week so here's some old mspaint stuff.

First one is from back from when I was trying to figure out my future MK and DDD designs. There's been a few changes, MK no longer has that star charm, and DDD's design has an added cape too. Also DMK's there too, no SDDD though.

The reason I can't post this week is because I'm busy 💔 My remaining free days will be spend working on my next actual art post.

The exasperation I feel about this is so real, because I got to college and was like, "hey, I think I have, like, serious depression and anxiety," but it was 2014. The majority of my understanding of the two problems was from tumblr, and I was seeing equal amounts of "hey, if you experience [thing], you might have depression" and "not everything is depression, you're just feeling sad, stop self dx a terrible disorder." But somehow I managed to get an appointment with one of the two psychiatrists in town, who then was like, "lemme schedule you some neuropsych testing and also ask you a few questions to see where you land on the continuum of mental problems." She ended up being like, "yeah, you definitely have major depression and anxiety to the point of panic attacks, also I suspect there might be something else at play so your neuropsych testing is on [date and time]."

Then I went to the testing, did word searches and multiple choice tests and connect-the-dots pages and coloring book pages? And I was so focused on doing the tests and being able to go back to campus to do classwork, so when the tester had finished grading my stuff, she was like, "yeah, you have depression and anxiety, and scored moderately on the cluster b personality disorder stuff, but not enough to worry about." And I was like, "did I score anywhere about, like, add/adhd, ocd, or autism?" because I had always had a sneaking suspicious that I had some or all of those. But she was like, "nope, you do not have add/ahdh, ocd, or autism."

Because I was able to focus on taking the tests. That was the explanation she gave. I was able to focus and finish the various pages of stuff she had given me, and I was able to complete each exercise exactly as the instructions had said to complete them. She didnt stop to consider that I--at the time, an 18 years old female college student--might have developed coping mechanisms from the American public school system to be able to complete tests. That I had literally spent 12 years learning to complete various exams and stuff, and learning to focus in bursts to follow directions.

Anyway, this is all to say that sometimes, when you're reading peoples' stories about how they experience a certain mental thing, and it starts to sound like your life experiences, it's okay to think that you might have a specific mental disorder. It's okay to use that self-diagnosis to seek out resources to help you live life a little easier. There is no such thing as "using up resources" for stuff like this, but also it is infinitely better to have a resource available to everyone than available to only some people, especially when the qualifying condition requires jumping through ridiculous hoops like neuropsych testing and doctors visits and shit.

For me, it turned out that I am very likely 2 for 3 up there, with add/adhd and autism, and that my suspicion of having ocd was actually probably me mis-categorizing my compulsion to organize everything I come across (to my own detriment sometimes) as ocd instead of the autism is likely is. I now have a definitive diagnosis of add/adhd (docs cant decide which one fits best) and am being treated for it and can actually exist as a competent human being now. I can feed myself and clean myself and everything.

I never would have gotten to this point if I had not come across some of these tumblr posts of people talking about their experiences with depression, anxiety, adhd, and autism; and I never would have gotten to this point if I had listened to those people saying you're not allowed to self diagnose.

See heres the thing 2 years ago it was valid to self dx autism and now its not because "too many people think they're autistic" and theyre "using it for clout"

This is exactly like 2012 tumblr where you couldnt even self diagnose DEPRESSION. Yknow how you officially diagnose depression? They ask if youre suicidal and how long youve been suicidal and congrats! You're depressed! Yknow how they diagnose autism? Based on how much of a BOTHER you are to the NT doctors. If you can make eye contact, if you can talk? Noooo there's no WAY you're autistic (they told my friend's son, who literally has a textbook presentation of male autism).

Why the hell are we infighting about "resources" and "clout" instead of being happy that a huge swath of people are finding coping tools that are WORKING for them. If youre not "autistic enough" to have an official diagnosis, what "resources" are you taking? What "clout" could you be gaining considering NTs LITERALLY hate us and can pick us out of a crowd unconsciously.

I genuinely think some of you need to get offline and find other RL autistic friends. Jeeeeesus
