Working with Sool King

It was another exciting, exhilirating and interesting working with an Algerian, French ,Arab celebrity, “Sool King” i was hired to be the wardrobe stylist for this music video and as always the energy, camaraderie and electrifying environment is felt every minute of the shoot. PROLOGUE 1. THAT BOY

Fourteen years earlier. First met when the boy that Ameryn - your grandmother started watching this summer was sitting outside of her house. There no way you could let him see you soolking the way you did right now. Peaking through the curtains of your bedroom window, you wanted to Jay watch him without him knowing you was there. There was little you knew about him. His name was Jay.

He was about 10 years old like you maybe 11. He’d just moved from Seattle, in the middle of the city. His parents had money, they had to have if they could afford the large victorian house they bought neat doer to Amoryn’s. They both worked in downtown Providence and paid Ameryn to watch Jay after school you finally see what he looked like.

He had shaggy was dark hair and apparently trying to teach himself how to play the guitar you stood the at the window for almost an hour watching him strumming the strings out of nowhere, a sneeze escaped from you, his head whipped upward toward the window the eyes met for a few seconds before you immediately ducked. Your heart was pounding now because you know you'd been watching him.

“Hey. Where did you go?” you could hear him ask. You stayed crouched down and silent.

“Y/n, i know you're there.” Wondering how he knows your name.

“Why are you hiding from me?”

Slowly standing up with your back facing the window, you finally answered, "I have a lazy eye.”

“A lazy eye? Is that a wandering eye?”

“I’m not sure. My mom always says my dad has a wandering eye.”

“What’s a wandering eye? Like cock-eyed?” He laughed.

“No way. That’s so cool. Lemme see.”

“You think it’s cool to have an eyeball that goes inward?”

“Yeah. I would love that. Like, you could look at people, and they wouldn’t even know you were staring at them.”

He was starting to make you giggle. “Well, mine is not that bad…yet.”

“Come on. Turn around. I want to see it.”

“No.”

“Please?”

Unsure of what came over you, you decided to let him see you. You ouldn’t avoid it forever. When you turned around, he flinched.

“What happened to your other eye?”

“It’s still there.” You pointed to your right eye. “This is just a patch over it.”

“Why do they make it the same color as your skin? From here, it looked like you had no eye. Scared the cr*p out of me for a second.”

“It’s under the patch. My eye doctor is going to make me wear this four days a week. Today is the first day. Now you see why I didn’t want you to see me!”

“It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It just startled me at first because I didn’t know what was coming. So, your cockeye is under there? I want to see it.”

“No, actually, the covered eye is my good one. The doctor says that if I don’t use my good eye, the lazy eye will strengthen and straighten out over time.”

“Oh, I get it. So, can you come outside now? Since you don’t have to hide from me anymore?”

“No. I don’t want anyone else to see me.”

“What are you gonna do when you have to go back to school tomorrow?”

“I don’t know.”

“So, you’re just gonna stay inside all day?”

“Yes.”

Jay didn’t say anything. He just dropped his guitar, stood up and ran over to his house. Maybe you did really scare him off after all. Three minutes later, he came running back toward his spot in front of Ameryn's. When he looked up into your window again you could hardly believe your eyes, covering his own right eye was a gigantic black patch. Jay looked like a pirate.

He sat down, lifted his guitar and started strumming. You're just surprise, he then began to sing a song. It was a take on Brown Eyed Girl, except he’d switched the lyrics to One Eyed Girl. That was when you figured out that Jay was equal parts insane and adorable. After he finished singing, he took a black Sharpie marker out of his pocket.

“I’ll color yours in, too. Will you come outside now?”

A feeling warmer than you’d ever known filled your heart. Thinking back, that was probably the exact moment that Jay became your bestfriend. That was also the same day he first graced you with a nickname, patch.

From North Africa to the Persian Gulf, from Rai to dance-pop to romantic ballads BY DANNY HAJJAR APRIL 26, 2024

ENCOMPASSING DOZENS OF countries inhabited by close to 500 million people, the Arab world is enormously diverse, and its music reflects that. Our list of the 50 best Arabic pop songs of the 21st century includes everything from Algerian rai to Egyptian dance-pop to romantic ballads from Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The songs here can have traditional roots that go back many decades, but they can also reflect today’s pop trends — many do both at once.  At the end of the last century and early in this one, the music industry in the Middle East and North Africa was dominated by artists from Egypt and Lebanon, two countries that had long been cultural hubs with large commercial markets. But in the past 15 years artists from North African and the Persian Gulf have found more crossover success, though both regions had long had their own blossoming music scenes —and in the case of North Africa had produced many artists with audiences in Europe. We made the list by consulting a panel of academics, music journalists, industry professionals, historians, and artists. Sounds naturally change over time, and representing as many countries and communities as possible remained a priority as we compiled the list. The final ranking takes into account the quality of the song, its popularity, and its cultural impact. To be considered for the list, a song had to fit the traditional mold of the Arabic pop genre, or be a song by an Arabic artist in another genre that crossed over to have wide success with audiences in the region. Additionally, at least 50 percent of the song’s lyrics had to be sung in an Arabic language. Had that not been part of the criteria, this list would’ve included music from global artists like Shakira, French Montana, and Soolking.
