There's nothing quite as satisfying as drinking pure water from an ice cold mountain stream 💦💦 . . After two non-stop weeks of @transcapemtb Shooting & Media, what a pleasure to gear life down a notch or two. To us, slowing down goes hand in hand with nature and #naturalmovement, often with a healthy dose of exploration on the side. . . This weekend's mission was #Duiwelskloof in @banhoek (dankie @hanliebooyens vir die inligting). We managed to dodge the NISSAN #TrailSeeker mountain bikers and headed into the shaded gorge while temperatures on the lower trails apparently boomed into the 40s. . . While they battled the heat, we chilled out in mountain pools, under waterfalls and within the verdant embrace of the dense Indigenous trees lining the kloof. Grace clocked a solid 8km of gnarly & challenging terrain over 4hrs; let's just say we're super impressed! Excellent #trail map at the @trailforks App! . . Great to test the @mizunoeurope trail shoes & @100percent_bike_za sunnies from @dawidrunvisser ... it's been a while since the #outdoors has looked this colourful! Roman Rock Lighthouse is an iconic #falsebay beacon for regular paddlers on this breathtaking stretch of ocean. It is also the only lighthouse in SA built on a single rock, where a wild surge runs amok along this deep ocean reef. The powerful light has been guiding ships to #simonstown harbour since 1861 ⚓ 🚢 . . Sometimes you need to soar like an eagle in order to get a bird's eye view of the expansive natural grandeur of an event like @ecobound_adventures' #tohellandback #mtb Challenge. The gruelling route passes through ever- changing ecosystems, from thorny savanna and arid #Karoo scrubland plains, to stands of mountain fynbos 🌿🍃🌸 Along the way, the huge field of riders had to cope with approximately 30 Degrees of temperature variation as they cranked SA's longest gravel pass into #DieHel (and back again). Day 1 peaked in the mid-thirties, while the return ride ascended into 5 Degrees Celsius at Die Top, the zenith of this 2-day, 2-way #mountainbike Stage Race. The predicted massive downpour for the #swartberg mountains never materialized, but I was pleased to have the @isuzusa #isuzuMUX to take on those roads! 👌💪👍 As always, it proved to be an amazing mountain mission with #ECOBOUND & the kickass #Media Crew, including @zaneschmahl, @andrehugomedia, @tonycookadventures, @tribaltourist and a whole load of amazing MTB peeps. From tempestuous Indian Ocean traverses along steepening cliffs, to windswept and contorted coastal forests: from the baking heat of thornveldt savanna to the humid heart of rainforest trails; from palm-lined and deserted beach crossings, to the vibrant streets of tropical island villages ... these are just some of the glorious scenes which created the backdrop for the @rodriguesisland #TrailDeRodrigues #trailrun 💚🏝️💙 There were Grannies and Grandpa's, and toddlers galore. There were octogenarians. There were incredibly brave paraplegics in wheelchairs, and kids with disabilities. And literally people of all shapes and sizes. The annual Rodrigues Island Extreme trail run brought the whole of the island to a standstill, with an incredible 1400x competitors over the four distances 👏👏👏 Of course, there were thoroughbred trail runners from all over the world, mostly French-speaking nations, with a seriously competitive field. @christiaangrey (4th) and @landiegreyling (2nd) had to work hard to claim their podium spots, mostly along typical island terrain where the free kilometers are few and far between. Sandy beaches, craggy volcanic ridgelines, humid forest sections, coastal forest and slippery tree roots: these were just some of the natural obstacles faced en route... Great to see @laurent_valette73, @yandema__, @clo.harper and the athletes of @reuniontrailacademy hammering home! Trails, trails, trails & more #trails ... Sometimes those 3AM wake-ups really pay off, and this was certainly one of those mornings. The light at T6 went all Cecil B. de Mille about an hour before dawn, with a gunmetal grey sea, a dozen drifting pirogues, tired team members wading into the icy maw of the ocean, and the dawn light leaking out from the serried ranks of monochrome clouds scudding in on the horizon. It truly unfolded like the paraphrased remake of 'All Quiet on the Eastern Front. Racers were strewn around the transition like wounded soldiers, patching up scars, heating coffee water on their tiny stoves, sharing war stories and #SleepMonster incidents, or just in pause mode as they slip into the 1000-yard stare. This is what the #AR BattleFront looks like, and you cannot begin to imagine the ecstasy and agony until you have walked a thousand kilometers in their shoes. About 1am here on 'The Island', and fokkit, what a day it has been. The @expafrica Adventure Race kicked off with a spectacular regatta, where traditional pirogues and a few very wayward sailors teamed up with 60-odd teams in order to tame the Indian Ocean off this most easterly Mascarene island. Let's just say the ocean won... Right from the word go, our boats were blasted by a searing tradewind as we tracked the racers onto the Big Blue. Near collisions and a few capsized ships - plus a broken mast - saw a handful of teams limping back to shore... After the colorful chaos of the sailing leg, everyone piled into the ocean - more than a kilometre off-shore - to set off in search of three CPs. Easier said than done, with tempestuous tides and the wind whipping up the water, with spray flying everywhere. Nobody ever said this was going to be a picnic, did they!? A high-speed trek into the volcanic coastal ridges morphed into a whoop-it-up zip-line across a yawning gorge, followed by a gritty descent back onto the coast to pick up their bikes. When we left the teams to head back to the editing salt mines, they were toiling into the steepening and dark hills above Port Mathurin, the capital of #Rodrigues. Currently, #greeneradventures (Sweden), #Nevarest (SA) and #Jabberwock (SA) are in the lead, but this 320km race has barely started.
