hi Merc! I’m curious if you know anything about the canvas/duffel bags we see the boys carrying when they’re heading to the planes for missions in MOTA? what kind of stuff might they have inside them? no worries if you don’t know/it’s not your lane, but you seem like the kind of person who might have background knowledge like that :)

It just so happens I *do* know what it is! A freind of mine is an 8th Air Force reenactor and we were talking about these bags recently at an event. It is an AN 6505-1 AVIATOR KIT BAG.

The bag was meant to carry your parachute, but could also be used to stash your jacket once you landed the plane safely. You can read more at The Rigger Depot, a movie and reenactor supplier. (My friend uses his to bring his WWII gear to events. They're really roomy.)

Several places online sell repros of this bag - Eastman Leather, and At The Front are two, but there are also a number of originals on ebay as well.

I hope it's not weird to be sending you this message out of the blue, but I'm best friends with athenasdragon and she recently recommended I read Heart Says Go, which led to me binging the whole thing in a day (instead of doing my stage management paperwork ahhhh it was a bad rehearsal but it was so worth it). 2: Would you prefer to live in the country or the city?

City. Definitely city. I’ve been living in a more rural area for the last three years, and I’m thrilled that I’m moving to my favorite city in the US in the morning!

4: Do you drink your tea or coffee with sugar?

Coffee, yes. Tea, only if it’s black. And, since I don’t drink black tea anymore–I’m a rooibos or ginger tea person–the answer is usually no.

5:  What was your favourite book as a child?

It depends on the age. As a baby, I LOVED Pat the Bunny. As a kid, I loved the first book in the Dark is Riding series, Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, A String in the Harp by Nancy Bond, Redwall by Brian Jacques, the Ramona books by Berverly Cleary, and Matilda by Roald Dahl. There are probably more, but those were some of my favorites. 

11: Who is a mentor to you?

I have some good mentors for my former career and a few in the career I’m about to join. In terms of mentors for life itself, I’m still working on it.

20: What can you see outside your bedroom window? 

A pretty stone wall and our neighbor’s/landlord’s house. Sometimes I can see two groundhogs!

24: Do you keep a diary or journal?

Nope! I’ve never been able to keep that up, sadly.

28: What would you want your legacy to be?

Hmm. I guess to be a good friend and mentor and to have written some good stories that make people’s lives better?

34: Do you address older people by their first or last name?

Usually first name.

40: If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it?

Either a compass or a musical note, and probably on the top of my foot.
