different anon but I like to imagine that sonoko is the last to actually realize. like she has the memo, but it takes until like late middle school before she realizes that the reason she's had so much material of gin and sumi lately is because they are dating for real and she didn't notice
leave it to Sonocchi, Spotter of Yuri except for when it involves herself,

Dear Wasshi/Washio Sumi (YuYuYu/Yuki Yuna is a Hero), I really do miss you. I think about you a lot, and I'm really glad that we were able to become friends. Even if you don't remember who I am or what I did, I hope that you're doing well. Love, Sonocchi/Sonoko Nogi

Dust Watched: Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru: Dai Mankai no Shou
Genres: (Dark) Magical Girls// 12 episodes // S01 (x) | S02 (x) | S03 (x)
If you’re not a YuYuYu historian, this is gonna be an extremely confusing ride.
✧  story  ✧
Alright, so, here’s the thing. While I was a Casual Enjoyer of the previous seasons, I never actually delved further into the franchise and I don’t remember much of the details of the original anime either so “Dai Mankai no Shou“ was one of the most confusing anime I’ve ever watched up until episode 3 or 4 where I spent like half an hour looking into the franchise so I can actually understand what’s happening. The timeline and the characters the story focuses is on is constantly shifting.
We start out with the main gang of YuYuYu doing SoL stuff and then we go back in time completely to the selection of a new Hero which ends up being Karin (as we know) and for a few episodes we only focus on the Sentinels; a group of failed Hero candidates who do the scouting missions and mind-numbingly boring stuff like that. This part was actually so boring, I almost had a heart attack fearing that this is going to be the focus of the entire season but it wasn’t.
After a few episodes with the Sentinels, we go back to the YuYuYu squad where Sonocchi reveals that her family has passed down a recording/diary from the first Heroes and we yet again jump back in time to see their story. Back then, Heroes were public figures and we see how this affects them. This is the most fitting part for the “Dark MG” genre with a lot of blood and drama.
Then we yet again jump back to the “present” where the YuYuYu squad and the Sentinels are sent out on their “final mission” for the Divine Tree.
There are random moments from previous seasons put in here or there for a few seconds, I’m guessing to show where we’re in the overall timeline.
I’m going to be honest, reading the LNs is probably going to be a better experience than this. While the story can be somewhat understood from the anime, it always felt like there were parts missing.
✧  characters  ✧
I’m going to skip the YuYuYu squad cause I’ve talked about them in my previous reviews (and they don’t do much until the finale). To me, the Sentinel squad was a complete mixed bag. Their missions were very boring, they don’t have Hero Powers so there’re no flashy fight scenes but the main girls seemed like a funny bunch. Unfortunately, YuYuYu doesn’t have a good track record with interesting SoL BUT the Sentinel squad’s personalities and struggles could’ve easily been its own season.
The first Hero’s is really just about 2 of the characters. Even though Yuuna’s... original reincarnation (???) is featured here, she isn’t the leader and mostly stays out of things due to an injury until the end of the arc. The main focus of this is Koori Chikage’s reaction to the public’s treatment of the Heroes and the conflict between her and Nogi Wakaba, the leader. Their story was generally very dark but YuYuYu has done 6 episode seasons before and I think this could’ve worked for that perfectly.
✧  art  ✧
Now this is very odd because the art seems to actually improve with each episode instead of regress like normally. I don’t have too many complaints except for the Sentinel arc in the beginning; they not only use ugly as hell CGI models but because everyone wears the same outfit and the colours are muted, the only way you can tell apart the characters is based on their voices. Visually, this part was just a headache to watch.
✧  sound ✧
Good. I don’t have anything else to say really. No complaints here.
✧  overview ✧
I think for anyone who wants to get into the YuYuYu universe, read the LNs (first) instead. This whole season was just very... chaotic and confusing to watch even though there are some great stories buried in it.
My Rating: 5/10

- Daigo gets told that at hall of hell you can hear something like a heartbeat.
- Hyakkimaru has a large red spot where his heart should be.
- After defeating the Nue monster, Hyakki doesn't get any body part back.
- Tahomaru, Hyogo and Mitsu witness a purple aura going from a cracked figure of one demon into the biggest statue exactly at the moment when Hyakki defeats the monster.
...you mean that technically, Hyakkimaru was living the whole time LITERALLY without heart?! And he was supposed to get one after defeating the fox demon but the giant demon figure stole it?!
The last person who could live so long without a heart was YuYuYu Sonocchi...though in her case, it was a fate worse than death thanks to the Taisha.

TAISHA PRIEST IS A WHEAT FIELD
The sky cleared. The world was reborn. Peace had at long last returned to Shikoku. In the wake of the Shinju's sacrifice to save what was left of humanity, the people started to rebuild.
But that is a story for another time. Today we focus on a strange field of wheat that suddenly appeared during the chaos of that final battle. This wheat field was surrounded by clothes and masks of the Taisha. For this field was the Taisha, reborn through the aborted Shinkon as a field of wheat. This is the story of the Taisha Wheat FIeld.
"So, what do we do now?" thought one of the former priests. "The Shinju-sama is gone, and even though we are its people, we now have no god."
Thankfully, the previous humans were not completely wheatified, they could still converse with each other at the very least.
"I suppose we wait. Maybe someone will find us and know what to do." thought another.
And so they waited. Days passed, but eventually a lone figure arrived on the hilltop.
"Aki-san!" the Taisha exclaimed in thought, but she could not hear them.
"So this is what would have become of us all if the Shinkon was successful," said Aki-sensei. "Those girls were truly in the right to do what they did." She felt the eyepatch covering her wheatified eye. "I suppose we got what we deserved."
Aki-sensei began to slowly walk through the Taisha field, removing the now useless masks and robes along the way. "I don't know if you can hear me, but you surely don't need these anymore." Aki-sensei thought for a moment. "We will need more food if we are going to survive without the Shinju-sama's blessings. Hmm..."
Aki-sensei eventually gathered the remaining robes and masks, and left in silence.
"What will become of us?" thought the Taisha wheat.
The next day, two middle schoolers arrived.
"Aki-sensei was right! There is a lot of wheat here! We could make a lot of udon with all this! The Shinju-sama must have left us one last blessing before it died, right Wasshi?"
"Yes, Sonocchi! We can use this to help keep our nation strong while we rebuild! Let's go tell the others so we can harvest this wheat."
"Noooooooo!!" thought the Taisha wheat.
And so the Taisha Wheat Field became udon to fill the stomachs of the hungry remnants of humanity.
THE END

Having friends over was something which Sonoko had become quite accustomed to in the last few years. Her house was, by far, the most affluent of her social group. Plenty could be done at her place to keep all her friends entertained and have fun. However, today Sonoko had two very special and unusual guests to show around her house. Her ancestor from 300 years ago, Wakaba, and her past self from her elementary school days.
The civil war going on within the Shinju gave some opportunities which sounded straight out of a dream. Thankfully, in part because of her family being more or less the most influential of the Taisha, they were well aware of the situation, so of course Sonoko was going to take the chance to show her ancestor how the Nogi family was now, and her past self how it’d changed in 2 years.
Tumblr media
“Ancestor-sama, Little Sonocchi, it’s just up ahead~. We’ll be there in a minute~.” The older Sonoko said, currently sitting comfortably in the extravagant limo she’d picked up the other Nogis in.
Tumblr media
“Yaaaay~!” The younger Sonoko cheered, an eager and happy smile on her face. “I wonder what my room looks like now...”
