my take on an older tails design!

random things:

- the right side of his body is pretty fucked up due to being caught in an explosion while fighting eggman

- got benched for a bit due to sonic going protective big brother mode but he went behind his back several times to help out with things. he is no longer benched

- in his preteen years, he acted more like sonic but once his teen years hit, he crashed (saving the world and being in constant danger since you were a toddler does crazy things to your mental health)

- still helps out with the restoration from time to time, but prefers to do his own thing

- a little more on the morally gray side of things. he still follows a lot of sonic’s principles but will go against them if necessary (does not always follow that “everyone deserves a chance to change” mentality….)

- still gets treated like the baby of the group. hates it

- inherited sonic’s stubbornness when it comes to injuries and will push past his body’s limits (rip his leg)

- facial expressions and explaining how he feels are both hard for him (im projecting)

- also inherited sonic’s need to bottle everything up

Wholesome Sonic and Tails Once Again!

I have testing today! I'm scared! Anyway, fic time! It ends very abruptly because I had no idea what else to write lol. Hope you enjoy it!

After everything that happened on Starfall Islands, one would think Sonic could deal with anything that was thrown his way. Sonic himself was confident in that statement. Which is why he hates how he doesn’t know how to deal with one thing, his feelings. Feelings were never his thing and honestly he never really knew what to do when negative ones came out. 

He has felt negative emotions before. He would be lying if he said he hasn’t. He’s been scared, nervous, upset, the whole lot but he never let any of them keep him down long. So, it made him confused on why his heart ached watching Tails pack away some of his most important equipment in a large case.

“Hey, Sonic, you mind grabbing me that contraption behind ya? I wanna work on it while I’m gone.”

“Alright, I gotcha.”

Sonic picked up the contraption and handed it to Tails with a small smile on his face. He lied earlier when he said he didn’t know what he was feeling. He knows damn well what it is but he doesn’t feel like admitting it. 

Tails is going out on his own and Sonic won’t be there. 

It wouldn’t be the first time Tails went out on his own adventure but something just felt different this time. This time Sonic won’t be near when Tails is exploring the world on his own. This time Tails won’t be gone for a week but months instead.

This time, Sonic is watching instead of acting. Watching as Tails grows up. Sonic remembers back when he first found Tails. The fox stuck to his side like glue and Sonic allowed him to stick. He taught the fox everything he knows and now…

Now Tails is taking a big, humongous step in his life.

And Sonic will only be able to witness it.

Sonic let out a light sigh as Tails zipped his suitcase shut. He stretched a bit before turning and facing Sonic.

Sonic raised a brow, “Got everything?”

“Almost.” Was Tails simple answer as he “dusted off” his hand despite the workshop being as clean as it could possibly be.

“Almost? What else could there be? You’re taking half the workshop!”

Tails puffed his cheeks, “No I’m not! I’m taking, like, ten things!”

Sonic chuckled, “You sure? This place feels barren to me!”

Tails let out a groan as Sonic chuckled some more, “You’re so dramatic.”

“It’s part of my charm!”

“What charm?”

Sonic sent Tails a glare, “I’ll have you know I have a ton of charm.”

“Mmm, nah don’t see it.”

“Why you-”

Sonic pulled Tails over to him and immediately trapped him in a light headlock and began giving him a light noogie.

“Gah! Sonic!”

Tails broke from his hold with ease before trying to fix his fur, “...Meanie.”

“Hey, you’re leaving! I feel like I deserve to noogie you at least one more time.”

“You can noogie me when I come back!”

Sonic simply rolled his eyes in response, “Yyyeah, but that won’t be for a while and my patience to noogie you is non-existent.”

Tails let out a huff, “Not my fault you don’t have patience in general.”

Sonic let out a fake dramatic gasp, “I do too have good patience in general!”

“Do not!”

“How would ya know?”

“Sonic, I’ve lived with you for years. You think I wouldn’t know how far your patience can stretch?”

Sonic rolled his eyes again, “Can’t be that bad.”

Tails simply sent Sonic a look that spoke for him. Sonic sighed and shook his head before Tails and him both broke out into laughter. Once they calmed down Sonic’s brain remembered what started the conversation in the first place.

“So, what else do you need before you leave?”

Tails paused before letting out a sigh, “It ain’t much, I can grab it before I leave.”

“Sure you won’t forget it?”

“It’s kinda hard to forget.”

“What, is it, like, the Miles Electric?”

“Sonic, I packed that up first. I would be a fool not to.” 

“Well, geez! How am I supposed to know that!”

Tails raised a brow, “Cause you’ve been watching me pack this entire time?”

“You put way too much trust in my memory.”

At that Tails let out a sigh, “Chaos, what will you do without me?”

“...I don’t know.”

Sonic leaned his back against the table he was near and Tails gave him a confused look wondering why the mood in the room seemed to lower. 

“Gee, I don’t think I've ever seen you this upset before.”

“I’m not upset! Just…I don’t know. You know me and my feelings, bro, I ain’t good at them.”

Tails sighed, “It’s just going to be a few months. And even then I’m going to be calling almost every weekend.”

“I know! That’s why I am so confused about things! Gah, emotions are weird! Why can’t they, I don’t know, be like running!”

“I agree, emotions suck. Why can’t they simply be normal? Why must feelings be, gasp, feelings!?”

“Feelings need to learn how to read the room…and my brain.”

Both brothers laughed at that.

“I’d fistfight my feelings if they were a person,” Tails admitted like it was his darkest secret.

“Feelings is, like, that one annoying guy that comes and bothers you during either really big events or the smallest thing.”

“Big events are understandable but then sometimes it’s just- Why am I suddenly sad while making myself a snack! Did the snack personally send an encoded message to my brain or something?” Tails broke down laughing at the end of his sentence and Sonic joined him.

“The snack wants your tears because all of the snacks you eat are always dry.”

“No, they’re not!”

“Yes, they are!”

The mood in the room went back to normal as Tails and Sonic proceeded to continue talking about how awful each other’s snack tastes were. Everything had to calm down, however, when Tails picked up the suitcase and proceeded to pack it into the Tornado. The sun was high in the air as Tails did a quick check-up on the Tornado to make sure it was alright to go.

“Got everything? Did everything?” Sonic asked, tilting his head ever so slightly.

“Almost, I need to do one more thing,” Tails answered.

“Well, what is it-”

Sonic was cut off as Tails ran right at him, wrapping his arms around the hedgehog in a tight squeeze. Sonic immediately returned the hug and the brothers stood their ground for a solid minute before Tails spoke up.

“I love you bro.”

Silence only lasted a few seconds before Sonic chuckled, “Ew, sentimental words.”

Tails immediately pulled himself away, “Nevermind.”

“I was joking! I love ya, bro!” Sonic quickly responded as Tails let out a laugh.

“I know, I know.”

Silence made a comeback as Sonic and Tails stared the other down with smiles on their faces.

“Well, this is goodbye partner,” Sonic sighed.

“Yep. Once again, I’ll be calling on the weekends!” Tails shouted as he sat himself down in the pilot seat.

“If you don’t I’ll find you! That’s a threat!” Sonic shouted back.

“I’ll beat you up! Don’t test me!”

“Try me, air boy!”

“That insult doesn’t make sense!”

“You don’t make sense!”

Tails grinned a cocky smirk before promptly shouting, “At least I am a cryptic on purpose!”

“What does that mean?!”

“You know what it means!”

“No!? I don’t!?”

“Byeee~!”

With those words Tails turned the plane on as Sonic kept shouting at him.

“What!? I can’t hear you over the plane!”

“I hate-love you!”

“I hate-love you as well!”

“I hope your trip is safe and satisfactory!”

“Thanks! I’ll call ya later!”

“Bye!”

“Bye!”

With those words the plane made its take-off and Sonic stood where he was until the plane was out of sight. Once it was, Sonic let out a groan as he felt like a weight was added to his body.

“Well this sucks, I’m going to crash on the couch.”

And then he did.

Ok, so I had some thoughts while looking through your au.

Are their personalities different due to how their pasts are different?

And, I’m pretty sure, there were like ancient depictions of a form looking like Sonic saving the world and stuff so I wonder if like sonic was “destined” to be the hero but in this case that isn’t the role he had. Meaning Tails has to prove to himself and others that despite what destiny tried to say, he is a hero.

These are very good thoughts and there are a quite few differences in personality so I’m just gonna do this in sections:

Sonic:

Sonic’s not too different to how he is in canon, I think swap sonic still has like the same demeanour and attitude, like they’re not that different in terms of being pretty chill, too cool for school and generally being a little shit

He leans more into the piloting thing and he likes to fly fast. Do not insult his piloting skills unless you wanna annoy him

no one really expects him to be a super genius they’re always caught off guard by it when says something really scientific just casually (except the people who are just used to it)

He tends a danger to himself most of the time, being sent to the hospital every couple of weeks cuz of of his experiments, inventions or just straight up forgetting he fit the blowtorch on the floor. (A lot of the times is a some dumb stuff that he does for ‘science’)

Zero sense of self preservation and a tendency to just casually play off injuries (“Relax shadow, all the bleeding was internal, that’s where the blood’s supposed to be-“)

filled with lots of energy and from the lack of usage of his speed to let some of it out, always constantly moving. Constant leg bouncing disease and rambling at record speeds (only tails can understand him the most when he’s in ramble mode). He’s also a really fast thinker

When his speed is brought up he gets a bit visibly uncomfortable and changes the subject, pretending that it never happened

Hes bad at taking compliments, he just brushes it off and tries to either discredit himself or awkwardly change the subject. When he was younger he was even worse

The boy would not see sun in days if allowed to hyperfocus on inventing, tails often has to drag his ass outside when that happens

The tornado is his baby

He’s more confident & independent from doing hero stuff and travelling

He’s a huge history nerd, whenever they go to angel island he ignores sonic & knuckles he goes straight for the ruins.

He knows random trivia facts

He owns many notebooks and has about 6 in total so far

In his travels he loves to learn about different cultures and traditions

Tails’s 8 year old brain at some point just comes to the conclusion that he straight up can't die cuz after everything he's been through he's still alive and so Tails slowly becomes more reckless with his well-being because of it much to sonic’s chagrin

This kid is really curious, you would be surprised how many of his adventures started out as innocent curiosity. He gets side tracked a lot because of it. (Once Sonic asked him to go get some groceries from the supermarket, returned in gold armor with a sword and a country. He forgot the groceries)

He reads a lot of comic books for catchphrase and megamind voice presentation.

People often underestimate him due to his age and adorable appearance and he uses it to his advantage

Cusses frequently

Does not hold back on insults. Someone could be debating whether or not to fight this eight year old but then he opens his mouth and they’re like “nah, the kid deserves it.” And squares up

Destined hero thingy

Tail’s definitely did have to prove to others and himself that he was a hero despite it not being destiny, and sonic had to prove that just because he was ‘destined’ to be a hero doesn’t mean that has to do it it in a way that’s foretold of be a hero at all

But despite this Tails does have a bit of imposter syndrome and feels like, despite all that he’s achieved, he doesn’t deserve to be called the ‘hero of mobius’.

He was just a little kid who wanted to help

But sonic called bullshit on that and told him that’s exactly why deserves to be called a hero, a little kid standing up against seemingly impossible odds and challenges over and over again just because it’s the right thing to do.

I’m thinking that maybe the prophecy will come into play later down the line but I’m still deciding

On one routine day at Gust Planet, Milly and Errorverse Amy were having a chat whilst walking to let off some steam.

Milly: It sure is a lovely day today.

EV!Amy: Heh, absolutely!

Milly: So... you're not angry with me flirting with your boyfriend earlier? I mean, I understand if that made you uncomfortable when you first saw it.

EV!Amy: Nah, don't worry. I gave up any feelings of jealousy on my end a long time ago.

Milly: You did? Ah, sorry. I haven't been here very long. Since it's my second week here, I've not been too familiar with how different iterations of people I know are like. And to think we've got over a hundred members here already since the group's initial inception.

EV!Amy: Well, I'm one of many Amy Roses that crushed on Sonic for a time, but I had since matured after meeting Nitro and shifted my feelings to him instead. Me and my Sonic are simply on a sibling bond nowadays thanks to that.

Milly: I see.

EV!Amy: So I noticed from when Nitro showed his EXE eye to you that you've got a bit of a thing for entities under that criteria, right?

She nodded in agreement.

MLB AU x SONADOW

What's the result?

A chaotic AU with the most unbearable slow burn of all ages.

Yep, we're doing this. Or at least we will talk about it, because I need to share it with someone. Anyone.

Warning: contains spoilers of MLB movie

So ever since the new movie of MLB came out -btw you should go see it, it's pretty light-hearted and adorable- my head is spinning and thinking what would happen if our two hedgehogs had been instead on the main characters' place, but with their own personalities.

Sonic would take Marinette's role, I haven't thought of a backstory yet, -and no he is not shy and without confidence, he is sly and cocky as ever- but he lives with Tails -when he isn't on one of his trips- and together they attend Chaos High on Green Hill -I'm still planning the settings and the names in my head-

On the other hand, Shadow takes Adrien's role, but unlike him, he's actually moving from his home in Station Square to go live with his best friend, Rouge, for a while, who miraculously lives in Green Hill as the others. And surprise, surprise, Gerald is alive! Does that mean that he is Hawk Moth and that Maria is Emily? To be honest, I'm still debating if Gerald is the real villain, because I want to include GUN in the game as well, but oh man, stuff like that takes time.

For sure though Maria takes Emily's place.

There's a high possibility though that she isn't dead. Just pretty sick. For now at least ;) *cough* I meant, she will be fine!

Tikal is the guardian so she takes the place of Master Fu and there are no kwamies. Yes, that's right. Instead of kwamies -do I even spell that right?- we have chaos, thus and why Tikal is the guardian of them. And instead of having a plethora of them there are only seven of them, each of them bearing a chaos emerald.

So skipping into the plot we have first day of a new year with everyone knowing everyone and Shadow being the new transfer student, who clings to Rouge's side and his personal robotic assistant Omega -yeah we're bringing him because we stan Team Dark!-

Introductions are made and oops, the two hedgies make a brief eye contact while at class. Neither of them shows any interest. Ouch I know, but wait, we have track. That's right. And where Sonic believes that his only rival is Jet here comes Shadow to steal the spotlight with his AIR SHOES, even if Sonic deems them rocket shoes. And just like that the blue blur finally pays attention to the stoic new student. Not as if he's fallen in love, but he is intrigued by him! I mean, have you seen any other running as fast as him?

Note; there are no super powers in this world, but Tails still is the smartest of the group, lol. That's just his nature. However he doesn't know that he can fly with his second tail. That's something that he'll discover later.

Anyways moving on, Hawk Moth -or however I'll remain the character later, because I'm not keeping those names for copyright issues- suddenly awakens the purple emerald, thus and the chao with it that have been lost in the fight that have broke between the echidna race and Tikal is forced to call upon the chaos of the dark blue and red chaos emeralds, named -that's actually a good question, I'm debating on Azul and Shade, but that's just basic? Or nah- Anyways, both chaos don't go well with each other and decide like in the movie to select on their own their champions.

Long story short, because there's no way I'm revealing everything, Azul ends up with Sonic and Shade with Shadow and they both activate their powers -after a lot of convincing by both ends, I know surprise for a specific blue hedgehog but sus- I was thinking that the could say, “Chaos Activate” with their respective chao on the start of the sentence, but working on it. Oh they are on their super forms, when powers activated, because I couldn't think of something better and thus their original abilities are unlocked, a.k.a Sonic's speed and Shadow's manipulation over chaos energy.

So the heroes meet while trying to discover where the corrupted with dark chaos energy is -yep, no akumas either- and they do not get along. Shadow having thought of it more, had already picked a name for his secret identity, named -I'm bad at names, but I was thinking something to do with Chaos, like Chaos Controller, but that's just too big so I'll think of something better-. Sonic soon realises that he still haven't thought of his own name, but then the corrupted arrives and interrupts them.

So they fight, they banter, Sonic haves a panic attack, Shadow almost loses his emerald, but they work it out. But like in the series they forget to cleanse the dark chaos energy something that BOTH Sonic and Shadow are able to do with the power of the chaos emerald.

They both find their way after that, working together, learning from their mistakes. Surprisingly, it is Shadow that finds a name for Sonic. Without even thinking of it too hard. He just calls him something and Sonic likes it so he keeps it.

And here's the moment that you all waited for.

The love matter.

Which takes a LOT OF TIME to finally come.

So to put it simple.

Sonic loves Shadow.

Shadow loves Super Sonic.

There I said it. You can all just toy with the idea now, if you haven't thought of this already. And oh they both get refused by the other like the movie. But first is Shadow who declines Sonic and then Super Sonic who declines Super Shadow. Why? Because one thing led to another and Sonic accidentally reveals his like to the other hedgehog. Shadow of course is taken aback, because he didn't expect Sonic to like him. Not that Sonic would like to change anything in their current relationship, because it's perfect as it is. He just wishes to know if Shadow would like to keep it like that and after graduation. Shadow, however, likes Super Sonic and thus declines Sonic. Of course he doesn't express this in a harsh manner. He is considerate of the other's feelings. But Sonic of course is hurting. So imagine the SAME time in the evening to getting asked by Super Shadow, if he would like for their relationship to grow into something more. Sonic just can't and he leaves immediately like he'd done a prior hours ago.

Of course I'm not telling you how they get together or how they overcome this, because where's the fun in that? Don't know, if I'll make it into a fic this idea yet, but feel free to send me asks, if you have any questions.

In regards to how little Sonic's friends know about him... how much do you think it would affect Tails specifically? By all counts he's the single closest person to Sonic, so the idea that there are some things Sonic won't confide in him about, or struggles that he won't even consider breaching would at the very least stir some sort of reaction. On the flipside, there's also a very likely possibility that Sonic has a lot of POSITIVE things he thinks about Tails that he might keep close to his chest, too. There's no doubt in my mind Sonic downplaying his emotions happens with even the positive side of himself.

Now that I think on the positive side of it, he probably has a lot of thoughts of how much he appreciates Knuckles and Amy, too!

oh yeah all of that is full of the pasta i'd love to explore further in some form! i mean tails is bright kid so he would know that there are things sonic doesn't share with him, but i don't imagine that he's aware of the sheer scope of those things, no one probably is (except metal sonic? but that's a different topic). he obviously knows sonic isn't doing well during frontiers, but im not sure if he's aware just how much of sonic has been consumed by the corruption, even at rhea island. i feel like if he had known he wouldn't have let sonic go ahead so easily

and sonic does keep more positive things to himself too, im pretty sure he hasn't fully expressed just how much he cares about his friends to them despite everything. he comes off as someone who acts instead of using his words, not that he isn't capable of the latter but it's just so much FASTER and EASIER to show your feelings through what you do for and to others (and can make it easier to mask away things you Want to keep to yourself). and while sonic may think he makes himself clear, the full extend of his intentions might not always carry across

I’m a bit scared to ask this, mainly because of weird this might sound, but have you heard of borrowers? The tiny people that live under the floorboards and “borrow” things? I’m asking this because I recently read you story on where Sonic shrinks himself due to Nines invention, and I wondered ‘what if Sonic was always tiny’ and it eventually came to a story idea on ‘what if Sonic was a borrower in Nines hermit cave’. He’s quick and fast so he hasn’t gotten spotted for years. During those years though, he’s been watching Nine suffer from being bullied, so he tries to help, in his own anonymous way, through notes of encouragement or something like that. Then one day he gets caught. I’m just wondering how Nine would react to finding a tiny person in his home, and their first meeting as bean and borrower.

Don’t be scared! This is such a cute ask!

Weird things have been happening to Nine for little over a year now. Some of his belongings are vanishing, or moving somewhere else in his workshop. Some even disappear when he turns his head for ONE SECOND! Whenever he opens his cooler he finds a snack missing.

What’s even weirder is the notes that are showing up. Little sticky notes with messy handwriting saying praises like “I think your tails are cool!” And “you’re really smart!” These sticky notes pop up in all sorts of places. One time Nine lifted up his blanket to turn in for the night, and there was a sticky note on his pillow along with an interestingly shaped rock.

It’s confusing to say the least. Nine initially thought that someone was stealing from him, but he was still very confident that nobody could possibly get into his lair!

Nine decided he was gonna catch this secret admirer and thief.

First he set some bait: a tiny little trinket he made out of scraps. He fixes a bunch of cameras pointing at that spot, and gave them motion sensors so they can take pictures.

At first the only thing the pictures were showing were him whenever he passed by. But during the night, the cameras all went off. Inspecting the pictures, Nine discovered that not only is the trinket gone, but there’s no evidence that someone even took it in the first place… aside from one picture with a small blue blur in the focus.

Nine realizes that in order to catch this thing, he needs to think smaller. He places a fly trap under the next trinket.

He is successful. Nine comes home from wandering about and finds a very tiny blue hedgehog struggling in the middle of the trap. The hedgehog never thought he’d ever get caught, so he is not prepared for this. He wiggles and struggles trying to get away while Nine approaches and pulls up a chair to examine him.

Nine looks at him with a confused expression “what…are you?”

The hedgehog crosses his arms to appear offended. “I’m a hedgehog! I think that’s obvious!”

Nine’s eyes widen in shock “you can talk?!”

The hedgehog nods “so are you gonna let me out or what?”

“And let you steal more of my stuff? No way. You’re stuck there, so face the music, hedgehog.”

“You’re a rude fox bean. After all those nice notes I’ve left!”

“Those were you?”

The hedgehog nods and resumes trying to free himself more, but gets exhausted so he leans on the trinket. Nine has so many questions, but he’s gonna start with “why?”

The hedgehog doesn’t lift his head from where he’s resting, “cause I think you’re cool. I’ve been watchin you for a little while, and it looked like you needed the encouragement, especially after hearing those nasty things the other beans were saying to you just cause of your tails. I think having two tails is cool! I wish I had two tails.” He wiggles his own little tail. Nine is taken off guard with what he said. Nah, he’s just saying those things to get out.. but then why would he leave those notes around before getting caught?

Nine sighs and removes the hedgehog from the trap and cleans off his little sneakers. The hedgehog happily runs around in circles, shocking Nine with how fast he is. Nine taps his finger on his lip “ah.. so that’s why I never see you. You’re too fast!” He mumbles. “Do you have a name? A family? Where did you come from??” Nine asks. The hedgehog points two thumbs at himself “I’m Sonic! And you’re Nine! I know that! My family? Our burrow was flooded and I was the only one who got out alive..” Sonics words make Nines jaw drops with how casually he mentioned being a sole survivor of something so traumatic. He really expected him to just say he had no family and to move on. Sonic sweats “sorry! I shouldn’t have said nothing… and also sorry for stealing your stuff n your snacks. It’s how I’ve been able to survive.”

Nine feels a sense of pity, or is it sympathy? He also feels a little annoyed that this little shit felt like he could just keep taking, but he also understands that Sonics circumstances meant he had to steal to survive. Nine pokes Sonic making him fall over “stop stealing my stuff. I need that. But if you need food or whatever, you can take a granola bar or something. I don’t want to come home and have the place stinking of rotting hedgehog.” Sonic nods enthusiastically and runs off somewhere.

Nine holds his head. What just happened? He just found a tiny hedgehog! He’s met hedgehogs before, and none of them are that tiny! Is there some sort of subspecies? Whatever. Doesn’t matter to him. Nothing matters to him.

art vs artist 2023

In my personal life, it doesn't feel like I've achieved much, you know what, nah, I've been putting myself out there a bit more and have made some new friends. I got team member of the month that one time, and am currently in the process of trying to quit some bad habits (I'm trying to quit drinking Coke, and haven't brought any fast food since I got back from holiday in November).

Creatively, there's been a lot of progress. I like to think a lot of that has come from the confidence that a server I joined earlier this year gave me.

The consistents I've noticed this year are side profiles and SW OCs, lol. There's also been a few pieces based on famous paintings that I really enjoyed.

I'm currently trying to decide what I want to achieve with my art next year. I want to do at least one Leyendecker-inspired piece. Try and do reference sheets more often (it will make ordering commissions SO much easier). I want to do more art for non Star Wars OCs, so hopefully, Doctor Who, Pokemon or Sonic the Hedgehog.

Shadow grinned proudly. "Well, I suppose that is true-HEY. Stop doing that, you're not going to change the subject. Besides, I don't want one of those things. They rot your mind. One moment you're doing functional and rational things, and in the next, you're just staring blankly at some-"

"Sonic's on tv?"

"WHAT," Shadow sat down beside his brother. "That fool isn't competent nor important enough for this."

"What, like you could do so much better, Mr. Social Anxiety?"

SONIC FRONTIERS REVIEW, 11/15/2022

WARNING: This review may contain spoilers for the game.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a rough transition int--

Actually, you know what? Nah. Fuck all that noise.

Sonic Frontiers, the much-anticipated latest outing from Sonic Team and company, has finally hit the market on everybody's favorite day (hint: not Election Day). Although previous games have tended to streak -- that is to say, many consecutive mainline titles released within only a few years of one another -- Frontiers is the first major outing for the blue hedgehog since 2017's Forces, which polarized critics and users alike.

But gone are the days of Twitter arguments over whether the "original character" gimmick had gone too far. Gone are the days of hearty debates over whether Infinite was a legitimately formidable villain or a poor excuse for one. Gone are the days of the Sonic franchise being content on settling for simple mediocrity or spirit-crushing averageness.

Frontiers' arguably marquee selling point is its stylistic shift from past installments. Rather than rehashing the platforming route that has yielded out-of-step results more often than not, Sonic Team took a bold risk by steering the game into a semi-open world direction. It's here where players first begin to recognize that this Sonic game is going to be different. It's the breath of fresh air that the franchise sorely needed in one way or another after over a decade of relatively lackluster efforts. But fret not, platforming enthusiasts; platforming levels, called Cyberspace levels in the game, are integrated into the game's story to ease you into what Frontiers has to offer.

Speaking of the story, it takes a darker but much more genuine direction. After ten years of Ken Pontac and Warren Graff writing inoffensive and frankly awful storylines, renowned Sonic comics writer Ian Flynn takes the helm for Frontiers. In short, Dr. Eggman creates an AI named Sage for his new plans of world domination. After the software goes awry, Sonic and his friends are suddenly forced to deal with a new problem: they have been trapped on the Starfall Islands, with Amy, Tails & Knuckles becoming trapped between the physical world and a digital dimension. Sonic must race against the clock to save his friends from being corrupted by cyber energy, but he too has a nasty run-in with the unexplained power and jeopardizes his own life as a result.

Unlike the serious tone Forces had attempted (and failed at miserably), Frontiers comes damn near close to shooting a bullseye on this go-around. The game takes a deep dive into the characters in a way that hasn't been explored in a Sonic title since the Adventure era. Whether showcasing Amy's gradual transformation from just being a self-proclaimed love interest of Sonic to a valued de facto fourth member of Team Sonic, Tails' growth from being confined to Sonic's shadow to being formidable as a hero in his own right while maintaining his brotherly bond, or Knuckles' wisdom and insight into his role as guardian of the Master Emerald and his own insecurities and jealousies, Frontiers fleshes out the characters and gives them new life. Even Sonic, who looked to be little more than a one-trick pony in the 2010s, has found his groove again as the confident-yet-caring hero he was always meant to be. There are loads of character development within this game, and it is an absolute delight to witness. But what this game perhaps best accomplishes is the ability to make the player feel a wide range of emotions that appear all over the spectrum, from glimmering hope to crushing pity. This story has the majority of everything you'd want in a Sonic story.

The voice acting in this game ages the characters a tad bit. Although it didn't work out for Cindy Robinson's rendition of Amy, it played out fine for the rest. Roger Craig Smith's outing as Sonic might not be his very best, but is certainly solid. Colleen O'Shaughnessy continues to prove herself as the definitive Tails voice while Dave Mitchell sounds to have found his niche playing Knuckles. Mike Pollock continues his Eggman dominance as per usual, and newcomer Sage is given a fittingly artificial but humanoid-sounding set of pipes by voice actress Ryan Bartley, perhaps best known for her role as Hanako Kamado / Makomo in Demon Slayer.

Gameplay also takes a step forward into the limelight. As part of Frontiers' step back from platforming, a new combat system fortifies Sonic's skill set. Players will encounter countless enemies that will take more than a simple homing attack to take care of. Sonic is provided a myriad of moves and combos, with certain skills only becoming available after progressing through certain parts of the story. Stats can be upgraded by collecting special seeds for power and defense, and by finding lost creatures called Koco for speed and ring capacity. Pulling off crazy combos and mowing down enemies is super satisfying here, especially as Sonic levels up and becomes stronger. As the player progresses through the five main islands of the game, Sonic can complete puzzles to map different parts of the island and discover portals, mini-bosses and story collectibles called "Memory Tokens" as a result. Combined with the semi-open world environment that encourages and even rewards players for being curious and exploring their surroundings, the gameplay is a total blast that will almost certainly satisfy those with a taste for exploration.

As for the Cyberspace levels, they remained consistent to the feel of Sonic's earlier platforming titles but utilizes a somewhat stale and repetitive level design by constantly having the player revisit Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Sky Sanctuary, to name a few. Nonetheless, these stages can sometimes be pretty fun to play through (given you aren't grinding out attempts to complete some of these levels in S-rank time like I needed to). Thankfully, there's also Big's fishing minigame that's very simple and soothing. It's arguably even better than some of the Cyberspace levels.

The music has always been one of the Sonic franchise's strongest suits and it keeps up with the trend here. Buoyed by a handful of pummeling metalcore numbers courtesy of Sleeping With Sirens' Kellin Quinn, Merry Kirk-Holmes' cinematic "I'm Here" serving as the main theme, and the buzz of One OK Rock's "Vandalize" as the credits closer, Frontiers embraces the abrasive and turns in a spectacular soundtrack as a result.

The environments, particularly the five main islands, are visually stunning and are perhaps the best-looking lands Sonic has seen in years. Although colorful and vibrant, Frontiers simultaneously manages to capture the bleakness associated with stumbling upon massive ruins of a once-great civilization that fell abruptly to some larger foe. There are signs of former life all over the Starfall Islands and the game lets you know it upfront.

In all, Frontiers is a chief calling card for Sonic's renaissance. Though a bit rough around the edges, it's a valiant first attempt at a new direction for the blue blur that manages to hit many of its spots and take its players on a journey that they won't soon forget.

Nah, you're biased towards the 2000's period of the Sonic games because Chronicles, a Sonic game from your precious "CONFIDENCE & SINCERITY™" era apparently doesn't count as being "meta" purely because you happen to not like it.

The recent titles we've gotten are about as "meta" as literally every game in the series. Literally the only real exception is Boom, but even that was a side-series that only lasted two years.
