I went from being like neutrally aware of the Sonic franchise characters' existence to totally obsessed practically overnight with Shadow and Sonadow. Went full speed ahead brainrot on them because of a freaking dream where cartoon (unspecified) Sonic & co accidentally entered the dimension of live action Sonic. Shenanigans ensued, most notably a dreambrain-hatched live action Shadow fighting his cartoon version because of his attitude toward Sonic & co.

A few nights ago I had a random as hell dream about Sonic the hedgehog and I am now here I have watched freaking Sonic Prime on Netflix because the mental images wouldn't leave me alone so I treated it like a weird message from the universe e send Help

My only previous interactions with sonic stuff was some person I followed on twitter for something else posting art of it (mega long time ago), watching the sonic live action movies why I have no idea (super long time ago), and that joke game that went surprisingly hard The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog which I completed even though the minigames to progress got hard AF for me (pretty long time ago) and like even before all that I knew of Sonic from ads, memes, and various posts on social medias. But I didn't fully engage with it.

Side note: the twitter posting was mostly sonadow and I would look it over like uh-huh ok the vibes check out and just keep scrolling like lsdfkjdskl but that is pretty much the main reason I knew Sonic/Shadow existed but at the time I didn't actively seek it out or try to learn more.

Onward...

My brain is so so so weird and the dream was somewhat vivid like watching a movie omg where the live action sonic and pals met the cartoon versions of the characters?? even though I never watched any of the cartoons before??? as such it wasn't a specific series, I just knew it in the dream they were from a generalized cartoon universe

Specifically it was Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the movie group, while the cartoon group had Amy and Rouge instead of the other two alongside Sonic, who I only even really knew about because of the April Fool's game. And Shadow was also there in both groups because why not I guess and they (the Shadows) fought each other because the movie one thought the cartoon one was a jerk lmao idk? Yeah my subconscious decided it couldn't wait for Sonic 3 and made up its own version of movie Shadow.

Early in the dream there was also a little kid clone of Sonic who belonged with the cartoon group. There were some cute interactions but in nonsensical dream fashion that character just disappeared later like he was never there lol

…There was some plot about the cartoon group needing to get back to their dimension because Sonic accidentally got them blasted into the movie one somehow... after watching Sonic Prime I'm like my dream was so FREAKISHLY similar to that show's plot, but I SWEAR I knew nothing about the premise of SP before the dream. Although, in the dream they were like... multidimensional travellers doing hero stuff and had met other variants before, just this time it wasn't intentional and it messed something up.

Uh getting off track... (which the dream itself did a lot tbf)

Anyway, what I remember is the movie dimension made the cartoon group look in the more realistic style so at first Shadow thought the actual movie group were the ones from his dimension (Shadow & Amy got separated from Sonic & Rouge) and was rude to them because he was so ticked off blaming Sonic for being a dumbass and yelling at Tails for not preventing whatever happened or something, so actual movie Shadow appeared like. don't talk to my friends that way asshole and beat the absolute shit out of him. There was an explanation Tails gave that the movie Shadow was more powerful for some reason I don't remember and Amy told cartoon Shadow to stop trying to beat him. But yeah bro was so pissed movie Sonic had to step in and physically stop him because he wouldn't listen to and/or overpowered anyone else. He reminded Shadow that the other Shadow was still him, in a sense.

Cartoon Sonic and Rouge appeared and Sonic started bickering with cartoon Shadow. but the movie versions were best friends so they were watching them like wtf is wrong with y'all. Movie Shadow got fed up quickly and punched cartoon Shadow again and stood protectively in front of both Sonic versions bristling and wouldn't take his eyes off his counterpart. Cartoon Shadow was so goddamn confused by Shadow's protectiveness and asked how Sonic had made movie Shadow his loyal bodyguard (derogatory) Amy and Rouge like explained the backstory to the movie crew, which is fuzzy to me but it was something along the lines of, Shadow had been brainwashed to rival Sonic, tricked to think that Sonic was evil (unbeknownst to that Sonic who in his pov had this random edgy hedgehog start attacking him out of nowhere during a mission) and they had a lot of intense fighting before Shadow found out the truth. But the two of them never quite got over the misunderstanding. Listen I didn't know Shadow's backstory, literally none of it, but I have read the wiki since ok

Meanwhile movie Shadow, in the dream, was made and raised in a lab and similarly believed he was made as Sonic's rival/equal. Behind the scenes some government thing or whatever were afraid of Sonic's power and wanted a backup plan. But some evil guy stole and unleashed Shadow. At first it was basically just a duel, Shadow admired Sonic, but the evil guy had put a chip in his head that when activated made him try to kill Sonic. Eventually he was subdued and the chip deactivated- and despite everything Sonic insisted Shadow come with him to his home and the rest was history. This unfolded in like flashback style.

There was a funny part where Shadow questioned Sonic's home like "What kind of base of operations is this?" In a very unimpressed tone. Sonic said sarcastically "Oh, sorry if you were expecting my own Fortress of Solitude." And I guess Shadow was allowed to watch tv because he got the reference and shot back "Does that make me Lois Lane?" Didn't make a whole lot of sense sdlfkjds but movie Shadow delivered this line very confidently and flirtatious and just walked away leaving Sonic shocked LOL

And then later Shadow complained that the government people would always rewind and loop the villainy parts and he never got to see if Lois and Clark kissed (It's been too long since I watched any Superman movies so I couldn't tell you if this makes sense) and Knuckles teased him for being a romantic, and then the whole team binge watched every Superman movie.

In the "present" at some point movie Sonic and Shadow pulled their alternate versions aside and like told them off for being mean to each other lmao cartoon Sonic was kinda like uwu I didn't know Shadow had feelings he's like a lone wolf and like was surprised by his counterpart's vehemence. Movie Sonic told cartoon Sonic that Shadow can be a great friend if you give him a chance. I don't remember the Shadowses convo much but it was a lot more chill despite the fighting before (though still prickly) because Shadow's reasons were more valid and it was more of a pep talk from movie Shadow that if he opened up more it might give the others around him more opportunity to know and accept him.

I remember there was this one specific heavy emotional line in the dream that stuck with me when I woke up said by cartoon Shadow about Sonic, "He's my best friend but I'm obviously not his" DFKLJDSKJ

Additional small detail that movie Sonic and Shadow had known each other for over 2 years during dream events. And they were quite close and in sync. But still bantery

My brain basically conjured a LITERAL FANFICTION in my sleep and I have been thinking about it a lot What's hilarious is I knew next to fuck all about these characters my brain pulled the plot points of this dream out of its ass

Typed out, this dream probably sounds a lot longer than it was... the "scenes" just felt oddly detailed for how mashed together and quick passing they were.

But yeah I kept thinking about the dream and like daydreaming more scenes and it somehow turned even more into Sonadow (like, I imagined Cartoon Sonic & Shadow finding out in a very abrupt way that the movie versions were an item. <- to my delight I did find a fic with a premise very similar to this just not movie universe related. Also played with the idea of Sonic and/or Shadow accidentally kissing the wrong counterpart in their excitement at being reunited which Awakened Some Things for the receiver of the unexpected passion😂 )

The dream kinda acted as a base that inspired daydreams to spiral out from my brain without permission but I just... mentally jumped into it because ships sometimes grab you like that.

And Sonic Prime made my sprouting interest worse, basically fuel to the fire, so now I am obsessed with them... like what a fucking way to get into a ship

Oh, I've seen the film before, so I already know his backstory. They showed us this movie in kindergarten, and I just felt sp confused and conflicted with how death was like for a kid cause they didn't talk to us about it afterward.

I think timing wise sonic prime coming out, possibly ending before sonic movie 3 is such a smart move because it really highlights how the relationship between sonic and shadow could develop and it builds a really strong foundation for excitement! With the level of success Prime has I’m sure it will translate to the movie.

CHAPTER 4: THE SONIC YOUTH

PREVIOUS CHAPTER

            “Okay! From the top, Chance!” Shout taps the screen of her phone and some zen music drones. “Picture a place where you and Benkei can fight freely. If you like, you may also picture a weather condition, structure, or other outside factor that shapes the area to your advantage.”

      Steam pours out of Chance’s ears as he sits in a meditative squat. His brows furrow like caterpillars dancing on a hot skillet. A place where he’s to his advantage? That’s everywhere! He’s Chance, the invader! The Ultimate Godhand Middle-Schooler!

      Shout places her palms on Chance’s temples, like squeezing open an otamatone. He opens his mouth and exhales, like a pressure release valve. Looks like they’ve done this before.

      “Okay, maybe… hmm. Let’s try this at a different angle,” Shout dotes.

      “Different angle? What angles are even left? I’ve read all those magazines, watched all those weird European movies, listened to those soundscape audios,” Chance counts off on his fingers, “I dunno what angle is left to explore. It’s been two weeks already, and we have like two weeks left!”

      Chance sulks, becoming a yellow and orange puddle.

      “It’s not like it’s your fault, either! It’s just not my thing, I think. Maybe I don’t need an Atmosphere,” he rolls backwards, limbs up like a turtle on its back, and continues, “It’s just like an entry exam, right? Who else would even have an ability like that?”

      “Well, Mr. Otsuka.” Oh great, she drags out the Mr. Otsuka card. “I truly doubt you will come across an amateur or apprentice who would have one other than me, as a special exception. But that’s not the point! Leo assigned me to teach you this so you would have a leg up on the competition. You need to learn this eventually, and both Leo and myself truly believe it well within your ability.”

      “Okay, but—”

      “No buts! You will eventually have to face pros, like Rei. You need to be at the level of a pro if you ever want a chance at being on our team — or beating Leo, for that matter. Sorry if this is coming off as harsh, but if you don’t pass the pro exam…”

      Chance watches her twiddle her fingers, not wanting to say the rest.

      “Fine. You’re right. What’s the new angle?”

      “What if I guide your meditation? You tell me what you want to envision and I could describe it to you! I do this often for my younger siblings to help them go to sleep by bedtime.”

      He picks at the grooves in his shoes for a bit, still in turtle position.

      “Yeah. We can do that.”

      Chance peeks out the window of the band practice room they’ve been training in. It would be weird to do this at the Menko Association, and the band practice room is quiet enough. Helps that it’s soundproofed, too. They can be a loud pair.

      The zen music continues to drift around the room. Shout flips the light switch and the room goes dark except for a ray shining in the door’s thin window. She sits down on a music chair in the corner.

      “Okay Chance, put your limbs down. Unless that’s how you relax.”

      He complies, dropping his arms and legs down on the ground. With his limbs spread like this, he looks like a starfish.

      “Good. Close your eyes. Good. Where would you like to go today? Where would Benkei like?”

      "A bridge. In a forest. Over a stream.”

      A clock ticks outside of the room. Click. Click. Click. Yeah, that’ll do for white noise.

      “Alright,” Shout’s voice takes on the foggy nature of a lullaby. “Your foot crunches on a branch you hadn’t noticed. Some woodland creature skitters away, but you don’t catch what it is. All around you is green, roof and floor, separated by brown pillars wrapped in moss.

      “You wander around this place, shuffling around fallen leaves and grass with your feet. Shuff, shuff. Shuff, shuff. Flowers and tall grasses occasionally decorate the trail you’re on. They all seem to be pointing you forward to a place where the ground splits apart into a trench. You stop at the ledge. It’s steep, and you see a creek cut through at the bottom. The water is clear as glass, and burbles over pretty red and yellow and orange rocks. Bubl, bubl. 

      “The sound is nice, so you follow the edge, until you come across a small, arched bridge. The wood it is made out of is darkened with time, and has specks of green. It’s well-loved. You take one step on it. Creeeeeak. You think that is how it says hello. There’s someone else on the bridge, crossing it at the same time as you. Who is it?”

      Chance snores in response.

      “Chance!” Shout hisses in a whisper. She quietly scrambles and kneels at Chance’s side. His belly moves up and down slowly. “Oh my. Well. I can’t just wake him up. That’d be rude.”

      And as such, Shout waits for the next half hour for Chance to wake up from his nap before a trumpet player boots them both out.

      Two weeks have passed without much fanfare. Plan “Get Chance An Atmosphere Go!!” has long since been abandoned in favor of focusing on getting the rest of his skills up to snuff. If he can’t develop an advanced skill to blow the competition out of the water, Shout figured, he could at least develop his baseline skills to an advanced level. It was a compromise they had to make. Shout wasn’t about to waste two weeks on an unachievable goal when she could do something tangible in that time. She wouldn’t let her student down like that.

      Chance had done well to keep up with his prescribed lesson plan. Hopefully it’ll pay off. Shout returns from a desk with a cheery receptionist with a bob cut. She has a stack of papers; some she hands to Chance, and some she keeps for himself. The events hall is sprinkled with clusters of competitors and some coaches and guardians, but Chance and Shout find seats away from the noise.

      “They have to have this information already right? The Menko Association paperwork was like the same stuff,” Chance groans, “And even if they couldn’t share our info with the venue, surely we could do it digitally.”

      “Oh hush you!” Shout gently chides back, “You will be just fine. What if the power goes out and you get hurt? What if the systems glitch out? How will they get your emergency contact then.”

      “If it means filling out more forms, I’d rather they let me bleed out.”

      “Chance! Don’t be so macabre!”

      The two continue to playfully bicker while on the opposite side of the building, a girl stamps her last form as complete.

      “I don’t see why we couldn’t do this digitally before the event,” Rei gripes under her breath as she hands off the paper to some dopey adult who carries it away.

      Another girl leaning back in her chair, almost looking like she’s in a dead sleep after a big meal, kicks the wall and spins around. The wheels on the chair creak as she does.

      “Tell me about it!” She somehow heard Rei’s whisper, responding snappily as if she was waiting for her moment to strike.

      “Yeah…?” Rei turns to address the girl, not expecting an answer to her question.

      Her hair is green, the green that happens when you don’t wash the chlorine out of your hair after going to a cheap public pool. It doesn’t look like a dye job. When she spoke, the Japanese came out awkwardly and kinda rude, but it was all correct; the grammar wasn’t stilted at all and the accent was there.

      Ms. Green Hair opens one eye to check if Rei is talking in her direction and then clears her throat. “Yeah! Back in Canada, we do everything on our phones ‘n’ stuff. Dunno what’s up with the Menko guys, amirite?”

      “Uh, yeah. I guess. Yeah!” Rei puts on the peppy voice she uses to talk to the girls at school — her people-person voice. It’s distinctly more feminine than her usual tone. She lightly bows in Ms. Green Hair’s direction. “You must be Ms. Persie 4-Dan from Canada! It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

      Persie gets up and her black leather duster audibly flaps. She bows back, but a bit too low and a bit too stiff. “And you’re Rei, yeah? I’ve watched a couple matches of yours. You’re somethin’ else, y’know that?” 

      “Aw, thanks!” Rei says with the sickly sweetness of a girl who has been doing networking since she was the age of 10. 

      Persie smirks, but only in a cool way and not a lame way. Never ever. “Didn’t you just get 3-Dan in your rank-up match against, um,” she thinks, “Daisuke 5-Dan, wasn’t it?”

      “Uh, wow, yeah!” Rei tilts her head to her left the way kids do when dumbfounded, “You really did your homework huh?”

      With the smugness of a house cat, Persie folds her arms, lifting a forearm to tap her temple with two fingers. “Of course, man. Thought it would be good to know for commentating the matches. Y’know, we can bounce off of each other and stuff. Since I know your matches and playstyle generally. Don’t want to bore the audience.”

      “Right.”

      The girls stand there in silence for a few seconds. Persie says nothing while looking at Rei expectancy. Rei waits for anything to happen or at least any excuse to say anything at all to change the topic.

      “Hey, do you have a copy of the match schedule? I forgot to grab one like a dummy, and you know how the Menko Association is about everything being paper,” Rei smiles, swallowing daggers.

      “So true!” Persie yips like a dog wagging it's tail.

      Silence.

      “How bad could it be?” Persie asks in the cool tone of an uninvolved third party who's so, so very cool.

      Once again, on the other side of the building, Chance and Shout hand in their paperwork. The receptionist passes back a rules pamphlet and a schedule with their match times highlighted. They both look at the first match they have. The black text in the neon yellow marker ran as dark as a trench that cut to the core of the earth.

December 27th, 2024 - SDVX EG, PIU 2024 PHOENIX, IIDX 32, DDR WORLD

arcade day!!! couldn't really figure out how to start this post other than saying i had quite a bit more planned today with regards to non-arcade stuff... the day before, i had the amazing idea of binging the first two Sonic movies before going to the theater to watch Sonic 3! so that night, i got started on rewatching the first one, but i never managed to get through the second one as i saw a triggering scene and my head ached too much to really pay attention to the second one... thus, i was unable to fulfill my dream of watching all three movies within the same 24 hours before going to round 1 afterwards . however, i did have another reason to visit round 1 that day anyway... and that was to meet up with an online rhythm gaming friend blowing in from up north!!! he had contacted me about meeting up there during my watch of the first movie, and i happily accepted, so here came the day to show up and game!!! starting with a teensy little sdvx warmup where i may or may not have left him hanging...

but now, for the REAL DEAL!!! this aforementioned rhythm gaming friend was not just any rhythm gaming friend.... he was a huge awesome co-op player!!! and since a new update released recently with new co-op charts, we tried them out together, getting this sweet new S-rank clear on Discord (CO-OP X2), as well as little fun re-clears for him (but new clears for me) on Rage of Fire (CO-OP X2) and Another Truth (CO-OP X2)!!! ...only to get our asses beaten to the ground by the newest and much more menacing Horang Pungryuga chart (CO-OP X2)... but overall, a really fun set, and i'm glad i got to experience co-op again for the first time in quite a while!!!

SWITCH OVER to IIDX!!! i watched the friend play for a bit and even saw him clear SP 5th Dan on complete sightread!!! shortly after that, i had a really strong itch to play it myself, and so i did...! alas, i only ended up playing two sets and taking photos of three songs, but they're not all that bad!!! after all, they include an EXHC on Igaku [SPA-9], an HC on Verflucht [SPH-10], and a sightread random EC on HAPPY ANGEL [SPA-10]!!!

and now, for the DDR portion of this post!!! with first place being meeting up with the friend, the second most exciting thing about this round 1 trip was the new christmas content update to DDR World!!! you may have seen the grand return of full-screen BGAs from a few posts ago(?), but this one was even better... it was the grand addition of other characters (like alice and baby-lon!! wow), other customization stuff, NEW BANGER LICENSES, NEW CONTEST SONGS and even NEW CLASSIC SONG CHALLENGE CHARTS!!! one of which, Hana ranman -Flowers- [CSP-14], i managed to snipe on sightread with a 30p PFC as 14 PFC #21!!! additionally impressive scores include finally getting a GFC AAA (with 995k score, at that!) on 9th Outburst [ESP-15], a sightread 49p PFC (albeit a really bad one) on the absolute banger of a contest song that is Dance and Death [ESP-13], a really damn good upscore (949k -> 978k) on Monkey Business [CSP-16], and even a sightread GFC AAA on Mesmerizer [ESP-15]!!!

quick SDVX interjection between DDR sets when i was sorta gassed out and needed a break... i wasn't really expecting or hoping for much from this set, given i'd already gotten a nice 18 upscore earlier to satisfy my needs, but i got a shocker of an upscore that blew said 18 upscore out of the water... it was a a UC on Juusan futou [EXH-16], a chart I hadn't even S-ranked prior...! and it was my first naturally occuring UC since BBKKBKK NOV, an insane feat by itself!!! with a 999 at that, holyhelll...

back to DDR, however!!! there's not many scores left (only 3 more, actually), so this is gonna be quite the short paragraph to wrap things up... but before i could leave round 1 and finally get to watching the second sonic movie, i Needed to get a PFC on a certain new license whose chart was torturing me all session long... a song and chart none other than Igaku [ESP-13] . but like, i'd already played the chart in IIDX with similar timing windows... why was it so hard to do the same in DDR all of a sudden?? beats me, but along the way i realized just how good i was at BE LOVIN [CSP-15], another one of the new song challenge charts!!! maybe i could even PFC it some other day... but no time to think about that now!!! i kept trying and trying for the PFC on the aforementioned chart, failing time and time again at the stupidest patterns possible... until finally... i got a 30p PFC on Igaku [ESP-13]!!! oh right, and to wrap things up... a PFC (and Flare EX clear) on Warera kanzen muteki no idol!! [ESP-12] (CSP-15 is gonna take me much, much longer...)

BONUS: I GOT A RASIS FIGURE FROM MY SISTER FOR CHRISTMAS!!! YOOOOOOOOOO !!!!! admittedly, it feels a bit degenerate to own this given her clothing (or lack thereof), but having this figure in my possession now is so surreal yet incredible... there's two of em now!!! one fat and stinky, the other tall and beautiful... wwwww

obvi i hate all thr copaganda in the paramount sonic movies (its paramount what do you expect /lh) but them doing the BARE MINIMUM of making sonic not blindly trust G.U.N. after hearing a snippet of shadow's story ?? like telling tails "we're NOT trusting them until we get more answers" Ok Now make your dad and uncle or whatever resign from the police force Sonic! ALL THE SCENES WITH MARIA AND SHADOW BEING SIBLINGS ARE AMAZING I FUCKING LOVE THAT SO MUCH 😭😭AAAEUEURUEUEEURUU theyre so sibling. im so happy and joyous.

i'm kinda sad they got rid of the "shadow's purpose was to help cure maria's terminal illness" plot line. i don't think there's any implication she's chronically ill, even if not terminal? like i LOVE when ppl hc shadow as her emotional support alien or something to help with her illness, going that route more explicitly would've been awesome. like he still has the pain from losing his sister, but a major part of his trauma is the feeling that his only purpose never got fulfilled—Maria was terminally ill but died of completely preventable causes.

robotnik's npd coding really hit home this time; tossing aside the only person whos ever been there for him because he got familial attention, completely cutting off stone because he showed distrust in their plan?? hands in my pockets. god, eggman npd autism. none of you understand how much they mean to me as someone w/ suspected npd, they have a certain npd chosen person connection i canot explain to persotypical ppl

also the opening SA2 sonic line misses its hit when he's not, like..Sonic giving a silly one-liner slightly dissing on how incompetent the military is. 😭 does that make sense??? Like in movie they technically went on the helicopter of their own free will, i would be more down with it if they were blatantly threatened .? like G.U.N. has done before?? Like it misses WHY sonic said it, it's just mindless reference & felt forced as fuck LOL

LIKE the super scene hits because it has the same / similar hit to why SA2 was so impactful! i have a sp/in in sonic so im not immune to "THATS THE THING I KNOW" pointing at the screen with a big smile BUT direct references should be done for story impact rather than "that's the line" like the thing above; Shadow helping to save earth after coming to terms with trauma and such, fighting alongside Sonic after so long of Shadow feeling alone, striking a cool ass pose with him with some lighthearted bickering—THATS IMPACTFUL!! it's not just "THATS THE THING I KNOW THEY DID THE POSE" it's showing shadow's growth :) that goes for the use of live and learn, too! live and learn, you may never find your way 💖

ALSO the next movie is gonna be based on sonic CD it looks like !! im genuinely rlly excited to figure out how they work with that, considering all the future & past time warps being a major part of the game? i think it'd be a good idea to bring sonic '06 into the mix either the next movie or the movie after that, silver coming in during the whole time shenanigans would make sense!! maybe a good time to reveal shadows been alive and formed team dark in his own time bc i doubt they'd make a whole movie or miniseries for that? unless the next movie is gonna b based on sonic CD and sonic heroes...but amy should get her spotlight for a bit

Great movie. fun action sequences, especially the Nessie one at the start of the movie. Mr Link was a fun character 8.5/10

Next ones on my chopping block that I want to go through are kubo & the two strings and paddington 2 at least before the third one comes out
