You know what would be nice? If Sega ever bothered to re-release Knuckles' Chaotix again
You'd think it'd be a no brainer since it is a 2D Sonic game after all, and was made for the 32X which was basically an add-on to the Genesis.
We've had plenty of collection games, some of which even reference Chaotix, but never felt the need to actually put the physical game in there.
Even the release of Sonic Origins had the opportunity to bring it back, but didn't bother. The closet we've got was Chaotix gameplay mechanics being used in Mania (also Mighty as a playable character).
Speaking of which, if the Knuckles series ever gets picked up for another season, I hope we get to actually see Team Chaotix, as well as any other characters who could be associated with Knux like Tikal and Chaos or of course Rouge (who may or may not be in the next movie).

Julie-Su's Only Official Video Game Appearance: Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Twenty Years ago Sega did something unexpected. They openly acknowledged the existence of the (Then current) Sonic the Hedgehog Comic Book Series in one of their video games.
It was in a collection of past Genesis and Game Gear Sonic titles called Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Released for the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox system in 2004.
The comic images can be seen from the menu screen and in the extras section which has covers from the entire Knuckles comic along with the Sonic specials and regular series. It ends at Sonic Issue 139 which was the latest Sonic Issue at the time the game was released.
Fun Fact half of the cover of the Sonic/Image crossover had to be blacked out due to copyright issues.
The Xbox version can also be played on a backwards compatible Xbox 360.

Well, it happened again: Tonight's final SAGE Roulette stream got muted because one of the songs got caught for copyright.
Not because it was actually copyrighted, no. Because some brainless clown took a video game song and used it as the backbeat to rap over. Get a load of this:
youtube
This song, called "Niiintendo", featuring a koopa troopa plush seemingly brandishing what appears to be a heroin needle, is not, in fact, from a game developed by Nintendo. It's the main menu theme from Sonic Mega Collection. Eventually this guy's "remix" pushes the bass boost button and he starts rapping over it, which the song on tonight's stream never gets to, because it's not a rap song. Twitch seems to think it is, though.
When this happens on Youtube, you get a little box to describe what's going on with the claim. So when some huckster rolled up on a Sonic 2006 video of mine and claimed the stage clear jingle was a hip hop beat, I got to tell them "No, this guy just put a drum track over an existing song, and he's using way more than the 6 seconds allowed by sampling laws." Not only was my claim dropped, I'm pretty sure that guy lost his partnership status with the music label he was claiming it through.
Twitch, on the other hand, has a simple drop down with four options:
My video does not contain the audio as identified
I created and performed the music and I own all the rights
I have permission from all applicable rights holders to broadcast it on Twitch
My usage is considered fair use.
Also the official Youtube video for this song is almost two years old and still has under 300 views. Because of course it does. It's yet another song about how much some dude loves to have sex with strangers and smoke drugs. Me talking about it right now is probably the most notoriety it's ever had, and it's because it's a thorn in my side and Twitch might ignore my plea and tell me to eat shit
What a racket

Nintendo Game Cube - Sonic Mega Collection
Title: Sonic Mega Collection / ソニック メガコレクション
Developer/Publisher: Sega (Sonic Team) / VR-1 Japan
Release date: 19 December 2002
Catalogue Code: DOL-GSOJ-JPN
Genre: Compilation / Variety
You know of the first four Sonic games already - good platformers. These are presented in mostly their original form, except for a few graphical modifications. These do not affect the overall experience, and die-hard fans should not be put off. Sonic Spinball is a slightly mediocre game - imagine the pinball areas in the Casino Night levels of Sonic 2, with the difficulty upped and the gameplay quality lowered - this one's an acquired taste (I personally hated it as much as that Dinoland game from Wolfteam).
Mean Bean Machine is excellent - this is just Puyo Puyo with a Western twist, and the Sonic license slapped on to make it sell. Flicky may be off-putting due to the dated graphics (I'm not kidding - I played it 2 times on my Mega CD already) but is an addictive game which originally started back in the arcades in 1984. Ristar is the best game on the disc, but you probably didn't know that this was there. Do you know why? Because in Sega's infinite wisdom, the company has chosen to lock it out until you start every other game 50 times. Personally, I think that the people putting the disc together thought they were funny.
One HUGE scar on the surface of this pretty little optical disc - NO SONIC CD: the best 16-bit Sonic game ever (IMO) has been sadly not included in the compilation due to hardware emulation difficulties (the game was on the Mega CD; a port of the 1996 PC version would be included in Sonic Gems Collection). Knuckles' Chaotix (32X) is also missing, and while I miss it, I don't see this as a huge problem.
Visually, the games still look great. Of course, they have technically aged, with the possible exception of Ristar - its use of the Genesis hardware and its extreme colorfulness make it too hard to criticize. (Make sure you're using the RGB cable, or if you live in North America, the next best thing, is S-Video - or Component if you can afford it!) The audio's also hard to fault. Some of the menu songs on Spinball are so grating you'll wanna put your TV on mute (thanks a lot, GEMS sound driver!). But the catchy songs of the other games (Chemical Plant in Sonic 2, anyone? Starlight Zone in the original?) are still good after all those years.
Oh, and the Japanese disc also includes The Ooze and Comix Zone. I liked Comix Zone's music. Despite using GEMS, the music is strangely awesome.
Along with these classic games, Sonic Mega Collection has some extras up its sleeve. Remember the lovely Sonic CD anime intro which we also got to see in Sonic Jam on the Saturn? Well, you probably would, if that game was on this disc. On the Mega CD, the frame rate was poor, the video size was tiny, and the colors were nasty. But it was a stunning intro. The PC version of Sonic CD lets fans see the intro in its proper colors. Squashed into a tiny window and badly resized (read: pixilated!) Sonic Jam came closer, but Sonic Mega Collection finally lets us see the intro (and ending sequence) in broadcast quality, full screen, full speed. The sequence was animated by Toei Animation, who I believe is also to blame for "Digimon", and is stunning. This version has the American music "Sonic, You Can Do Anything" dubbed over the original Japanese rap song, but in all honesty, I prefer the American version as far as the one in this disc is concerned.
It's not perfect though. A graphical smoothing option on the emulator would have been nice like is available on PC emulators. The rest of the movies are cop-outs. Rather than giving us the selection of TV commercials on Sonic Jam, Sega has decided to give us advertisements for current and upcoming games. Oh, and a really bad "History of Sonic" video, nowhere near as good as Sonic Jam's museum section. There are also lots of comic cover scans, some of which are nice, but because these are the American Archie comics, some are painful too.
Overall, Sonic Mega Collection is worth picking up, considering how many titles you're getting on one disc. The fact that Sonic CD isn't included is a huge kick in the stones, but considering Ristar is here (albeit in a nearly impossible-to-unlock form), as well as other classic Sonic games, movies, and illustrations, it's hard not to recommend.

What do you think is the best sonic game of all time?
Now THIS is an intense question!
The short answer is Sonic 3 & Knuckles because it's my favorite.
Most Sonic fans would probably end the conversation here, but I'm not like most Sonic fans so I'm gonna give a more complicated answer!
While technically Sonic 3K is my favorite of the classic Sonic games, in reality I was first exposed to the game via the Sonic Mega Collection on the Nintendo Gamecube. Not only is it still the main way I prefer playing the game (mostly due to muscle memory for the controls), but the collection itself also allows me to play Sonic 1, 2, the secret version of 2 that lets you play as Knuckles, various spin-off games, and even the more obscure but equally great games Flicky AND Ristar!
With all of that content in one place, plus a truly wonderful collection of bonus content and amazingly atmospheric menu themes that nowadays nearly drive me to tears from the nostalgia of it all, it would really be this collection that I would call my favorite Sonic game.
That being said, it does bring up the interesting question of whether video games that exist to be bundles of older games truly "count" as their own games or not.
For many people like myself who wasn't even born yet when the classic Sonic titles came out, collections such as this one were the only way I could play these games due to not owning a Sega Genesis. This was my introduction to Sonic 3K and the other original games, but the way in which I played them was via a method that wasn't the original intent for them. Frankly 2D Sonic games are pretty simple, so using a Gamecube joystick really didn't restrict any of the movement and physics-based platforming that was originally done with the Genesis D-pad, but it is still a unique way of playing the games.
I for one am for the argument that collection games can count as their own games. At this point in time the vast majority of gamers will never get to experience these games with the original controllers nor on CRT TV's (which even I got to experience!), so I don't see the point of gatekeeping which way of experiencing these games to be the "correct" way. The Mega Collection may be a bit outdated now, and I never liked how you had to unlock nearly half of the collection, but I still cherish it and play it to this day 💙💛❤️
