Sonic Forces Rewritten belong to Garrulous64 (YouTube)

Just rewatched Garrulous’ videos of Sonic Rewrite and decided to draw fan cover art. I still enjoyed it and think their rewrite for the plot of Sonic Forces is better than what we have in the game. I also have more ideas I want to draw, along with Gadget (also known as the Avatar or Rookie) and Infinite/Nil.

That’s What It Takes To Be Infinite

Infinite didn’t care about the Jackal Squad.

“Rise of Infinite”, the last issue of the tie-in prequel comics for the game, reveals that he initially joined Eggman just because he felt bored with the world as it was and wished to “change” it. Furthermore, Infinite’s physical contact with the Phantom Ruby makes it project an illusion of his innermost desire - an entirely desolate world, which implies he already had a few screws loose by the time the squad attacked Eggman’s base, and that he wanted to change the world for the worse regardless of what his squadmates may think about it.

Note that he doesn’t think about them once during his rant - the focus is entirely on how tired he is of going through the motions.

Then there’s Episode Shadow. 

Infinite, who already knew his squadmates are dead by the time he confronts Shadow, reacts to Eggman telling him they were “useless” with an annoyed and dismissive “Yeah, yeah, I got it…” before boasting that he’s “the ultimate mercenary.” This heavily implies he only cared about his squad in terms of how they reflected on him - now that they’ve failed to do their job under his leadership, he feels the need to reassure himself that he’s still the “ultimate” out of insecurity, and he wants to do so by defeating Shadow.

Shadow, predictably enough, is quick to prove him wrong.

In Infinite’s speech about his “rebirth”, he similarly doesn’t mention his squad even once, but does take the time to allude to Shadow calling his face “pathetic”, implying that the personal humiliation he suffered from being defeated by Shadow was more of a priority to him than the lost lives of his squadmates.

Finally, Sonic Forces’ lead character designer Nobuyoshi Tanahashi notes that Infinite was conceptualized as a “fiendish being that stands in the way of the bond between Sonic and his friends”, with refusal to believe in bonds being a key motif of his design. This would track with his disregard of his squad and his insistence that “friends are nothing but a fleeting illusion”, which mirrors Sonic’s unyielding belief in the power of friendship.

In conclusion, it’s safe to say Infinite’s descent into villainy was not caused by grief over his squadmates’ deaths or anything of the sort. He didn’t care about them enough to grieve them, and agreed to become Eggman’s tool for world conquest out of nothing but spite at being bested.

Infinite is my favorite villain because he's MY villain, yknow like- he's not Shadow's villain, not Knuckles', not a personal tormentor like Starline, not a general big bad like Eggman or the deadly six

He was made specifically for YOU 🫵🏽 the player. Sega used him to craft YOUR backstory, to invite you to the world by suggesting "hey, if you were in this world, this would be your character's call to action"

He is a present to me from the writers and I cherish him 🤎

Meet Theo❤️, the Red Wisp. Friend of Gadget and Nil.

I think this would be cute to see scenes of Gadget and Nil having a wholesome relationship with their Wisp, being a great companion to them. It would also make sense for Gadget to have a friend and need a bit of help when he was on his own during the events of “Sonic Forces” and “Let’s SAVE Infinite.” You know, doing missions and helping out the Resistance, and to find Nil/Infinite.
