mdzs headcanon of the day #299 !

bc xxc’s always had bangs/ hair to frame his face, he’s never seen what he looked like without them. so one day out of sheer curiosity he pulled his hair back to expose his forehead and screamed bc it was so bad (according to him, he looked uncanny and unsettling). now he would rather die than have anyone see his forehead exposed. he’s perfected the art of making sure the wind doesn’t blow his hair out of his face and reveal his forehead (it’s not even that bad. he thinks he looks like megamind. his forehead isn’t even that big)

song lan found out the hard way after he tried to push his hair back in a romantic gesture and almost got punched in the head. again, xxc would rather eat glass than have ANYONE see his forehead. the day song lan knows what he looks like without bangs is the day he backflips off a building

What made you ship it?

Half of it is me smashing 3 of my original favorite characters together and half of it is the fact that they met! canonically! At least Xiao Xingchen and Nie Mingjue did, and I'm obsessed with this interaction and I would pay so much money for a little more context of how it went.

On a more serious note, though, It's fantastic how these unrelated characters had their lives forever altered in such similar ways by the Jin sect taking an interest in Xue Yang. The story is full of parallels and the ones between those three are all very tragic and interesting.

From the miscommunication to the shattered souls and the fierce corpses, they feel tangled even if there's just the slightest intersection between their actual lives. And it's nice to look at them like this! c:

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

How compatible they are. I think Nie Mingjue is made of the same idealistic and earnest ambitions Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan are made of, he's just forced into a completely different setting.

SongXiao's entire way of living feels like Nie Mingjue's wildest secret dream. Roaming the world and fighting evil and helping people, no politics or scheming, no shady sect leaders... Is it too far fetched to imagine Mingjue would like something like that?

And, of course, I'm sure neither Xingchen or Song Lan would dream of having Mingjue's life, but I love that little nudge to the book interaction in CQL when they say they admire and trust Sect Leader Nie, despite not wanting to get even more involved with that mess.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

The ship itself is so unpopular! Is it unpopular to say Xiao Xingchen fucks nasty? Or maybe that SongXiao could use the protection of the Nie sect sometimes(?)

Characters:

Lan Wangji. Just. The man at the center of literally all the moments that gradually tipped me from bemused enjoyment of CQL to complete obsession. I love him so much. I want to look at his brain.

Jiang Cheng. The precise character archetype that I love most lol. A character who knows he's inadequate and can't do anything about it? Who knows he's the secondary character in someone else's story? Perfection.
