The melody of the song, "Take My Hand" by JANNABI from Romance is a Bonus Book feels so sad. Though it has a far more uplifting lyrics than "You Remember" by Paul Kim from The Glory, it still makes my heart so heavy and I love to hear You Remember more than Take My Hand on a repeat. It also gave the Romance is a Bonus Book's ending a more gloomy tune than it was supposed to be 🥺. Still a good song though.

I thought Kim Soo Hyun was the king of the cameo but tonight Song Joong Ki appeared in Queen of Tears as Hae-rin's divorce lawyer and set a new standard which will be hard for anyone to match. Who knew we would see Vincenzo again so soon?

And as the OP of the clip pointed out, it was a very meta moment, referencing some of Song Joong Ki's key characters. “He's a terrifying man. There are many rumors about who he is. The youngest heir of a conglomerate family. A former soldier stationed abroad. Someone who came here on a spaceship. Others say he's a werewolf. His name is Vincenzo. And he's from the Mafia.”

For a drama with such a depressing premise, divorce, illness, death they are still managing to include a lot of humour. It's a delicate balance which they have pulled off majestically so far .

In Episode 8, the shit really did hit the fan for Hae-rin's family. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Romance Is A Bonus Book Review/General Thoughts

I’m very vocal about how much I love this drama, so I think I should just go ahead and write a review for it.

I’ve been meaning to for a while, but I’ve just been so busy with school and other stuff. Anyway! Onwards towards the review of one of my favorite comfort dramas!

Synopsis

Cha Eun Ho is a successful and handsome writer who is also the youngest chief editor at a publishing company. He has a calm demeanor and remains reasonable at work. He then becomes involved in the life of his childhood best friend and crush, Kang Dan Yi, who was once a popular copywriter. She is now divorced, a single mother, unemployed, essentially homeless and struggling in life; though she still attempts to find a job, but even with her once good career, she cannot.

However, in a desperate attempt to find a job, she lies about her background and begins to work as a temporary worker in the same company under none other than Cha Eun Ho. As they become involved in each other’s life more than often, a love story begins to unfold.

My Review (Spoiler Free)

I originally watched this drama for Lee Jongsuk (big surprise, not). I had been really reticent about watching it for a number of reasons, but primarily because I hadn’t really watched any Noona Romances before and I wasn’t sure if I’d like them.

This drama was a nice “Baby’s First Noona Romance” due to the friends-to-lovers arc of the relationship as well as the fact that the age gap between the characters isn’t drastically large, with the age gap between Dan-yi and Eun-ho being only 5 years and the age gap between Dan-yi and the other guy being 7 years. Additionally, everyone is an adult and none of the potential love interests for Dan-yi are still in high school.

Anyway, I absolutely adore the relationship between Eun-ho and Dan-yi, he is really supportive of her and never dissuades her from pursuing what she wants to do.

I believe that the romance in this show is really mature, with Eun-ho not wanting to force his feelings on Dan-yi. He gives her space to have freedom and to do what she wants, even if it’s going on dates with someone who isn’t him.

In my opinion, this drama is really heartwarming, sweet, wholesome, cute, endearing, quirky, funny, nostalgic and comforting. It’s really just a wonderful show to watch and I really recommend it!

I will admit, the show feels aimed at a very particular audience (that I’m definitely a part of)- book lovers. However, I’d like to think that you could enjoy this drama even if you aren’t or weren’t a bookworm. Romance Is A Bonus Book is a show that really feels like a love letter to both rom-coms, books (at least to me), and also Lee Jongsuk’s career.

My General Thoughts

This is one of my favorite LJS dramas, right behind W: Two Worlds. This particular drama hits me in a very specific place as a book lover, reader and as a writer.

For those who may not know, this was one of if not the last of Lee Jongsuk’s projects before he did his 2 years of mandatory military service. There’s a few references to his past works and characters sprinkled throughout the show, such as a character named Park Hoon (who shares the same name as LJS’s character in Doctor Stranger), there’s a brief telepathic communication between him and his boss in one episode that it has to be a reference to his powers in the show I Can Hear Your Voice. I won’t swear to it, but I feel like Jung Eugene’s character, Song Hae-rin, having unrequited feelings towards Cha Eun Ho is a nod to W: Two Worlds where her character Yoon So-hui also had unrequited feelings for the male lead played by Lee Jongsuk. Whether it is or not, I still feel this drama was a really good send-off for him because of these references.

I would say that if you’re a fan of Lee Jongsuk, books, reading, writing, and/or noona romances… you’ll probably love or at least enjoy this drama. I know that I did!

If you’ve seen me talk about this drama before, you know that I have said essentially the same thing over and over again about it. It really left me with a sense of nostalgia for when I was younger and used to live in the school library reading books during recess. The vibes of this show are just straight up cozy.

It’s curling up with a good book (or several!), your favorite hot beverage, some blankets, pillows and maybe a favorite plush toy in your favorite reading nook on a lazy day in autumn.

 İnsanı hiç yormayan, üzmeyen bir dizi. Tek kelime ile anlatacak olsam naif bir diziydi diyebilirim. Konusu kitapların etrafında dolaştığı için olabilir, ben izlerken inanılmaz keyif aldım. Kısaca konusundan bahsedeyim. Cha Eun- Ho( Lee Jong-Suk), başarılı bir yazar olmasının yanı sıra Gyeoroo Yayıncılık şirketinde en genç baş editördür. Çok zeki, yakışıklı ve sıcakkanlı olmasına rağmen söz konusu işi olduğunda öfkesini saklamaz. Kang Dan- Yi ( Lee Na- Young) ise Eun-Ho’un 20 yılı aşkın çocukluk arkadaşıdır. Yaşça Eun-Ho’dan büyüktür, arkadaşlıkları abla-kardeş ilişkisi gibi eğlenceli ve sağlamdır. Bir zamanlar çok başarılı ve ünlü metin yazarı olan Dan-Yi evlenip kariyerini bırakmıştır. Ama geçirdiği son bir yıl onun için çöküş olmuştur. Kocası onu aldattığı için boşanmıştır ama kızına bakabilmek için çalışması gerekmektedir. Kariyerine bu kadar uzun ara verdiği için iş bulamamaktadır. Özgeçmişini çöpe atarak yayıncılık şirketlerine sekreter olarak başvurur. Ve sonunda Cha Eun-Ho’nun şirketinde işe girer.

Kitapları çok seven bir insan olarak, nasıl basıldığına, hangi aşamalardan geçip, neler ile karşılaşıldığına şahit olmak bir izleyici olarak bana ayrıca keyif verdi. Çalışanları çok sevdim. Bazı dizilerde olan aç gözlülük, entrika gibi konular hiç işlenmedi. Şirket içinde zorluklar oldu ama bunlar bile naif ele alındı. İlk bölümlerde belki yaş farkından belki oyunculardan kaynaklı çifti yakıştıramadım. Ama bunlar daha önce izlediğim “Do do sol sol la la sol” dizisi kadar itici bir çift değildi. Başlarda beraber olmalarını hiç istemesem de ilerleyen bölümlerde gönlümü fethetmeyi başardılar. Güzel seven bir adamla daha tanışmış olduk.

Dizide evli kadınların ya da çocuk doğuran kadınların, iş hayatının bitmesi üzerine çok duruyordu. Ne kadar donanımlı olurlarsa olsunlar, güncel olmadıkları bahane edilip, değerlendirilmeye dahi alınmayışlarını gözler önüne serdiler. Bir diğer mesele ise dijitalleşen dünyamızda kitapların yeriydi. Bir kitabı elinde tutmak, kokusunu almak, hissetmek gibi kavramlara yer verildi. Kapak tasarımından ön sözüne kadar ne kadar emek verildiğini gösterdiler. Türkiye de ne yapıyorlar bilmiyorum ama satılmayan kitapların parçalandığını izlemek üzücüydü.

Dizi ile ilgili ufak tefek detaylara gelecek olursak, Lee Jong Suk'un askere gitmeden önce oynadığı son dizi bu olmuş. Yani bir nevi bu sene Big Mouth (TV Series) ile ekranlara geri dönüyor. Kendine tekrar yer bulup bulamayacağını göreceğiz. Dizide Gyeoroo Yayıncılık editörleri önemli bir karar alacakları zaman trençkotlarını giyip havalı giriş yapıyorlardı. Bu keyif aldığım sahnelerden biri oldu. Rahatsız eden şey ise, Dan-Yi nin ilk bölümlerde bahsi geçen kızının ilerleyen bölümlerde unutulmasıydı. Kızı için birçok şeye göğüs geren bir kadın imajı yarattıktan sonra kızından hiç bahsetmemesi samimiyetsiz geldi. Öte yandan bölüm sonralarında yazan cümleler, diziye kitap okuyormuşuz gibi bir hava katıp tatlı bir dokunuş olmuştu.

Baş rollerimiz dışında Jung Eugene ve Wi Ha-Joon ‘ın oynadığı rollerde dikkat çekiciydi. Song Hae-Rin (Jung Eugene), uzun süredir erkek başrolümüze uzaktan aşık olan başarılı bir kadındır. Onun bu durumunu bile, en naif şekilde bize aktarmayı başardılar. Ji Seo-Jun ( Wi Ha-Joon) ise başrol kadın oyuncumuzdan hoşlanan, kitap kapakları tasarlayan başaralı bir adamı canlandırıyordu. Sang Hee's story

Eight years.

Sang Hee had her parents for eight years. She laughed, cried, and screamed with them. They were her world. When they brought home her younger sister, she was beyond happy. Those were the best years of her life.

After a tragic car accident, Sang Hee and Ha Rin were forced to live with their aunt. Sun Hee, their dad's sister, cared for them as best as she could with her low income. She cooked for them, made sure they had clothes, drove them to school, and took them to the doctors; everything a guardian should do. While her sister grew to see their aunt as a loving mother figure, Sang Hee continued to grieve their parents intensely.

During her teen years, Sang Hee rebelled. She broke out of the house constantly, hung around the wrong crowd, and her grades started to slip. One night, she got into a heated argument with her aunt. Their screaming match ended with her grabbing a suitcase, packing it, and leaving.

Sang Hee felt like her aunt was trying to replace her parents and she hated it. She started living with her best friend and went no contact with her aunt and sister.

Once she was finished with high school, she went to university. During her college years, she realized she needed to turn her life around and get her shit together if she wanted to become successful. She did and graduated with honors, and proceeded to open her own Salon and record label.

At 32, Sang Hee got a DM on social media. It was her sister. Ha Rin told her the news about Sun Hee's sudden death and that she was invited to the funeral. Her heart sank. 'You never realize what you have until it's gone'. She went to the funeral and to her own surprise, broke down at her casket. The two sisters swore to have each other's back no matter what; they were all they had now (family wise). Their relationship is stronger than ever now.
