i remember the day that i woke up with a splitting headache and some guy’s thoughts in my head. his voice was nice, but damn he thought a lot. i know that at some point this would happen to my soulmate and i. but i didn’t know it would happen so early. 

“i should talk to chihoon about a new collab song.” who’s chihoon? what song? he’s a singer? i took a deep breath because i wanted to say something too. but his thoughts were over taking mine.

“yo! will you stop thinking for a second? i can’t think because of you.” i rolled my eyes walking down the stairs to drink some cold water. he had so many ideas and they never stopped.

“who are you?” his voice. i will never shut up about my soulmate’s voice. i mean his thoughts were loud, but he has the best voice. i could shut my thoughts ip forever just to listen to him. yeah yeah, privacy and all but those privacy boundaries were all gone when we were born in this generation.

“i guess your soulmate?” i giggled then pulled out my phone scrolling through my my instagram. i wanted to know everything about him. so of course for the next few days, we just talked everyday. we got to know each other through our thoughts, and i loved it. he was so sweet. 

“y/n! have you found your soulmate? nevermind. have you heard this song?” my best friend grabbed my hand to sit down. she then put her airpod into my ear giggling. this voice, was really familiar. i pulled the airpod out of my ear then snapped my head over to my best friend. 

“who’s the artist that sang this?” i panted then i grabbed her phone looking at the artist. chan. chan? i stood up and told her that i would be back, then ran around the corner to hide. 

“what’s your name? i realized i never asked.” i looked down at my feet while thinking it to myself, hopefully he wasn’t busy. i smiled when i heard his chuckle. goddamn.

“hey to you too princess. i can’t talk for very long but it’s chan.” his laugh. was i in love with him? yeah probably. wait stop i can’t think like this. 

“why? are you busy?” i kinda hoped that he wasn’t busy, i wanted to talk to him, not because i had no friends but i was having a bad day. i just wanted to hear his voice. 

“i’m going to film something now i’ll talk to you later?” the second his thought finished, i started pouting then ran to the change room. i changed into shorts and sports bra, then taped my hands with boxing tape. i put my gloves on walked into the gym. i hit the punching bag a thousand times even i lost count. while i was going off at the punching bag, he kept thinking of cute things like oh she’s so cute or something totally unrelated.

“fucking asshole.”  i kept punching and repeating that in my head. over and over again. i don’t know why i was so pissed off. it’s not like we were dating. i haven’t even seen him. 

“y/n, you know that i can hear you right?” i rolled my eyes sitting down on the floor. i took my boxing gloves off then untaped my hands. as i sat there zoning out, no thoughts at all. then i got interrupted.  

“guess what!! i got tickets to TOO’s showcase!” my best friend sat next to me and shoved her phone into my face showing me the tickets. i grabbed her hand pulling it away so i could read it. i told her i’d go with her only if she bought me albums. so of course, a day before the show, we went to the store and she bought me a stack of albums.

we got front row seats and i was already so tired. chan and i haven’t talked in a while because we were both in our own thoughts. he was really nervous but i didn’t have the energy to talk to him. when the show had started, there was a really cute guy on the stage. 

“damn.” there was only one guy that stood out to me. he had silver hair, and a tattoo on his right arm, he was so fine. when i made eye contact with him he smirked. i smirked back at him then turned to face my best friend.

“what? did you see a really fine guy or something?” chan’s voice finally spoke to me after a long time. i laughed and said yes to him before staring at the fine ass guy in front of me.

“fair enough, i see a really fine girl in front of me right now.” he laughed in his head and i replied laughing looking down. i was kinda sad about it but at the same time, i didn’t even know where my soulmate was. 

“chan do you want to introduce yourself first?” the mc said and i turned to look at the mc, then turned to look at the boys to see who was going to speak first. chan? isn’t that my soulmate’s name? but there’s a thousand of chan’s. bang chan, heo chan, and kang yuchan. but my soulmate won’t be an idol right?

“hey i’m chan!”

I WENT TO FUCKING KCON YESTERDAY! OH MY GOD IT WAS JUST THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!!

I don't usually listen to slower songs, but I think I may have to stan BTOB now, I'm in love with Eunkwang's voice 😍 and I'm guessing Minhyuk is the guy who looks like Soobin from TXT and Donggeon from TO1 had a child? Peniel is so fucking funny, I love him already. Plus the backgrounds for their songs were soooo pretty, the forest scenery...

StayC! Sieun being a host, loved it. Her English is pretty good! Isa has such a cute smile. My mom said she thought they were 13-16 yo cause of their bright concepts lol. They performed Run 2 U, Stereotype, So Bad, and ASAP, plus a cover of Olivia Rodrigo's Good For You. Of course half the people there were there to see them, their cheers were the LOUDEST of all. StayC: *breathes* everyone: YAYYYYY!!!!

And finally my ult group. TO1. WOW. I am so jealous of the people in the front rows who got to high-five them during Surf. They performed Son of Beast, Surf, No More X, and their cover of OneRepublic's Someday. Chanhyuk with short black hair is everything I ever needed. Kyungho also looked so good with that haircut I'm crying. The only thing I sort of disliked was the LIGHTS. They were SO FLASHY and my eyes were hurting.

Overall: 9/10, minus 0.5 because the lights got WAY too flashy for me at times, which I didn't like, and another 0.5 because the guy in front of me was SO TALL lmao. There were a lot more boys there than I expected.

Best of K-Pop 2021 - 40-31

We're pretty much in flawless tier from this point on...

40. Enhypen - Attention, please! 2000s pop-punk, gimme more! This rocks harder than any actual band release this year. HYBE and rock is turning out to be a great combination. Please tell me this is a real group a la fromis_9 and won't disband next year - if not, at least give their music to TXT then!

39. Twice - Last Waltz. Twice going goth is also not what I expected for 2021, but I absolutely love it. Twice tried a lot of different non-retro sounds on their album, and Last Waltz is the indisputable stand out. The "DUN, DUN DUN, DUN DUN" chant and the breaking noise right before the chorus drops are lovely experimental touches that add to the disorienting feel of the song. Last Waltz sounds like the theme to a horror story about possessed dolls. Also stop saying Twice can't sing - they were hitting all of the right notes.

38. aespa - Savage. My faith in 4th gen girl group music is restored. Why does this song work while others don't? Actual transitions musically connecting song sections. The impeccable bridge. A grower chorus with a catchy hook (yes, zu-zu-zu-zu is catchy). Ningning and Winter are, without competition, the best singers out right now - I knew SM wouldn’t let me down in the vocal department. Also the second verse has the bars of the year I don’t make the rules. Another SM girl group got me, hope aespa can keep up the quality!

37. NCT Dream - Hello Future. Dream has been the best NCT unit since 2018's Go. Hello Future is a fun, anthemic, and hopeful song that brings joy to my life. I adore Dream’s high choral notes, which helps keep their youthful identity even as they age.

36. Itzy - Sorry Not Sorry. Not Shy made me realize how much Itzy can sell a 70s rock concept. Sorry Not Sorry continues that outlaw energy with some trap beats for contemporary bop-ability. MITM may have been disappointing, but the rest of Guess Who more than made up for it.

35. Billlie - flipp!ng a coin. Another step forward for the girl crush sound. These dubstep instrumentals and talk-song vocals work together perfectly. And the prechorus and bridge always get me hyped. Plus the coin roll in the chorus is iconic. Of course the f(x)-cosplay group would have good b-sides...

34. Red Velvet - Pose. SM are hoes for not giving RV a full album this year, and for giving them Queendom to promote when Pose was right there. Pose is the best f(x) song I’ve heard in years. It’s like Rum Pum Pum Pum and Zimzalabim had a baby and made a much better song. Does this make up for the tragedy of their post-2017 discography? Not really but it helps.

33. NU'EST - Drive. I love Nu'est because they feature a low-toned vocalist as their main vocal. Think about it - there's a reason Minhyun was the only Nu'est member in Wanna One - Nu'est without Baekho doesn't sound like Nu'est, and Pledis needed that Nu'est money. Of course, they don't have any slackers in the singing department, which makes Drive a fantastic listen from start to finish. Drive is my no. 1 long drive playlist song. More bright boy synthpop, but that yearning postchorus is why it's up here.

32. TO1 - Prayer. The artists formerly known as TOO should not be slept on. Why this is a b-side is beyond me. I knew this would hit when that guitar started, and the beat came in and I ascended. This is how you do a moody concept fellas. Again, it’s all about the postchorus - please appreciate my good-singing sons Jaeyun and Donggeon. I knew they were made for greatness when they covered the best TVXQ song, don't f*ck them over whatever new company they're under!

31. Woodz - Waiting. I have no idea who Woodz is or where he came from, but Waiting completely f*cks. The beat never lets up and keeps me hitting the repeat button. An energetic swing-rock inspired pop hit.
