I am so so sorry this took so long to write, but I really ended up taking my time thinking about what I love about all the Blue Lions so much. Bonus I also included Rodrigue and Gilbert.

Dimitri -

Oh, geeze, only one thing? Well, since I just posted about his sense of duty and how he doesn't pull the "woe is me for being so privileged" card, I'll talk about his compassion instead. I love how this is both his greatest strength and weakness. How he gets so influenced by other people's hurt and doesn't know how to put healthy barriers up. But it's also that side of him that emphasizes so strongly with Byleth and coaxes the emotions out of her, the side of him that finds it in himself to forgive Edelgard. I also love how amazing his character arc is, and how he loves helping people so much, and I could keep going lol.

Dedue -

He's both the gentle giant who loves gardening and cooking, but utterly terrifying and completely badass in his loyalty to Dimitri. I also love how he handles Duscur. He admits to hating Faerghus for what they did, but that doesn't blind him to total prejudice. When confronted by Ingrid, he doesn't feel the need to personally carry the weight of her prejudice and "teach" her differently, letting her come to her own conclusions. I just think it's neat to see a character who experiences racism that isn't the one pressured to change, it's everyone else who has to do that leg work.

Felix -

I love what his character arc changes say about his character and that he even gets them, but that's too long for this. My favorite thing about Felix is how tragic parts of him are. Felix cares about his friends and family with his entire heart, but has no skill at communicating or processing complex emotions. He hates seeing them all hurting, hates himself for being unable to do anything, and ends up hurting everyone he cares so much about. It's what makes his arc so powerful in AM that he matures out of that.

Ingrid -

I love how she takes a common FE character tick (massive eater), but turns it into something serious. But more than that I love how realistic her struggle is. She has her own dreams and passions and naturally wants to pursue them, but actually addresses and acknowledges the benefits of a political marriage rather than just waxing poetic about wanting "romantic love." Bouns points because her struggle isn't "I want to marry for love", but "I want to be a knight" wayyyyy cooler.

Sylvain -

I'm going with the expected answer here with his complexity. His excessive flirting isn't treated as a joke, but a side-effect of a serious psychological damage and treated as a serious issue too, not as a wish-fulfillment trait. But he's also one of the best and brightest leaders in this game, and is so painfully loyal to his friends and family. It's a crime against his character that he's so easy to recruit.

Mercedes -

She embodies that "I'm a healer, but . . ." meme. Mercedes is incredibly sweet and cares about everyone, but she's not a boring or one-note character and her gentleness doesn't make her a pushover either. She is not afraid to share her mind. I also love how she enjoys trolling everyone with ghost stories. You know Annette and Ashe suffered many a night because of her.

Annette -

I love how determined she is once she sets her mind to something. Whether it's her studies or trying to find her father, Annette goes after what she wants and puts 100% into everything. Not being the best at studying doesn't deter her either, she just admires others who don't have to try as hard and tries to learn from them.

Ashe -

I'm cheating and using something from Hopes. I love how Ashe decided to fight for what he believed in. He worried about and considered what Lonato would do, but ultimately chose to follow his heart and do what he thought was right, and that takes a lot of courage.

Gustave -

How he's able to overcome his immense depression when needed. Gustave is still racked with guilt, still believes himself unworthy of his family and Faerghus, but he's able to work through that and ultimately come through in the end.

Rodrigue -

His ability to balance being himself and an effective duke. He seems to know when it's ok to just be a father or just Rodrigue and never comes across either too married to duty or like he ignores his responsibilities for his own desires. He seems quite mature in his outlook on life.

Book Meet Wall, Wall Meet Book.

Here we go. Let's get something out of the way, I don't hate The Prison Healer. It was great right up until the last chapter, I hate the ending. So like Shusterman's The Toll this gets a low rating. 3 rather than 2 because this is book 1 rather than the last book. I will say I am aware what I am about to say is quite possibly a personal hang up. I promise I will review the book as well.

The Prison Healer feels like another case of a book that should have been written as a stand-alone becoming part of a series. I am aware that is part of a wider issue with the publishing industry, not authors. But why oh why can't we have good quality stand-alone books, especially young adult fantasy books. Will I read The Gilded Cage when it is released? No, well not strictly no just highly, highly unlikely. That plot is set up to cause even more malicious pain to established and liked characters. From where this book ends I can see where the trilogy (?) is going to end but ugh the destruction and pain it will take to get there.

Moving onto the plot. The plot for this book is actually slightly more complicated than I originally expected it to be. Kiva Meridan is 17 and conscripted as a healer in Zalindov Prison the holds the worst of the worst in her country. She is despised by her fellow prisoners after selling her soul to save her life, she is the one that brands people. In the middle of winter, the soldiers bring in two new prisoners in quick succession, Jaren an older woman who is rumoured to be the Rebel Queen. There is also the arrival of a new female guard, a rarity. The Rebel Queen has been sentenced to the Trail of Ordeal, which asks her to face 4 trials one for each of the four elements. It is said to be unsurvivable. Due to the Rebel Queen's physical state, blackmail and her family Kiva volunteers to take the Trial of Ordeal in her place. The trials take place over 6 weeks, during those 6 weeks the prison starts to face a deadly plague as the healer Kiva needs to find the answer. All while dealing the charms of Jaren and all issues faced by being a female prisoner in an awful prison.

It's not simple but it is effective. It means the story is always moving, never the same for too long and shows multiple sides of the characters over time. Kiva's strength, intelligence and occasional weakness, Jaren's complicated side, caring and anger, Naari's well everything and Tipp's childish joy, smarts and love for Kiva. I like the writing. It does suit the characters. There are some charters with different speech patterns, some with language that indicates their lower levels of education or possibly intelligence. I'm guessing it does introduce the important future characters as best it can, particularly Mirryn. It does raise some interesting questions about survival and betrayal if you want to see them. Think about it in Nazi Germany terms (as it seems the most culturally prevalent) both in prisons and in places like Gurnsey that were occupied. The differences between pragmatism and evil. And the impact of psychological impacts of this situation. But you can just read it for enjoyment.

Never forget, little mouse: no two people loof the same, but we are each beautiful in our own ways. The human body is a masterpiece that deserves our respect. Always. — (Faren Meridan) This sort of quote shows up a lot when you are reading books with healers but I always really like them.

Angeldust — There is a highly addictive drug in the book. It's deadly, it does kill at least one person that we see. We do see another set of side effects. Angeldust is a choice name for it. I'm assuming the name choice was deliberate. Angel Dust is the street name for Phencyclidine (PCP) a drug that causes a dissociative state.

"I have a lot of dreams. A lot of nightmares, too. Only time will tell which path my life will take" — (Kiva to Naari)

Because unlike Cresta, Kiva cared whether she lived or died, and she could that being obedient was more likely to keep her on this side of the overworld. She played the game, having chosen long ago to sacrifice her soul in order to save her life. — (Kiva) This is the question that I find the book asks. What would you do in Kva's situation? Comply and even help the guards or resist. (The Collaborator by Margaret Leroy asks similar questions)

"I'm sorry I acted like such a brute. It won't happen again." [...] "And just so you know, I don't see you as some kind of damsel who needs rescuing. I've never met anyone stronger than you — not just because you've survived a decade in this gods-awful place, but because you've sacrificed your own needs over and over again to serve those around you, even—and especially—those who don't want your help. So you're right, you don't need me fighting your battles." [...] "But... if you let me, I'd like to be standing beside you as you fight them." — (Jaren) This is a really strong moment.

"Never apologize for loving someone. Even when it hurts. Especially when it hurts." — (Jaren) There is serious context for this. But it is just a beautiful quote. Jaren is often the humanity to Kiva's pragmatic.

I have two favourite characters in The Prison Healer. The adorable Tipp and Naari a prison guard. Tipp is Kiva's assisstant Kiva describes him as "Tipp looked like a burning candle. He acted like one, too, full of energy and cracking with passion. At eleven years of age, nothing ever seemed to faze him.". Tipp is eleven and acts it, a ray of sunshine and hope in what can be quite a dark setting. While Kiva says she sees him as a brother sometimes she feels more like a mother. She is his guardian after promising to look after him after the death of his mother. The blurb is so misleading when it comes to the reason Kiva works so hard to keep Tilda the Rebel Queen alive. It's not her family, it's Tipp after his life is threatened by the rebels (hence my second quote). That whole thing is a testament to her love for him. My favourite quote Kiva says about him. He was meant for more than this. The world needs people like him out there in it, shining light into the dark places. He's wasted in here.

Naari Arell is the biggest surprise for me in the book. Naari is an extremely competent, compassionate and human character. One of the more unique aspects of her character is that she is an amputee, her disability is not a hindrance if anything it aids in her job. She becomes something of Kiva's protector and source of strength, spending time in the infirmary watching her work, taking her out of the prison as needed and being the nearest to her during the Trial by Ordeal. There are some truly beautiful moments between them one of my favourites is: her amber eyes locked on Kiva's and alight with forceful emotion, as if she were trying to share all her strength, all her confidence that Kiva would still be alive at the end of those ten minutes.. I'm going to be completely honest and say that her chemistry and relationship with Kiva was better than Jaren's. Thinking more than once make it sapphic.

This is called a dark, thrilling ya fantasy and it is that. Some warnings if you are interested in reading this. So some of the things that appear in this, drugs, death, sexual assault, self-harm, abuse, bullying and torture. The torture is both physical and psychological, with the psychological torture shown in the first person. I said in the intro such as it was that I don't hate this. It really is quite the opposite. I do recommend this to people who like fantasy. The micro slice of the world we see is well developed and from the maps (art by Francesca Baerald and they are stunning in their detail) it is clear that there is much more to this world, that Lynette Noni has thought it out. The plot does move at a good pace with the darker elements interwoven not dumped on you all at once. They aren't just there for shock value either, they are there for a reason and all make contextual sense.

The Never Tilting World Review

4/5 stars Recommended for people who like: fantasy, multiple POVs, goddesses, magic, demons, LGBTQ+ romance, strong female leads, kick-ass women, women engineers, disability representation, mental illness representation, characters of color, complex morality I will say that for the most part I really enjoyed this book. The concept is fascinating and the characters and world were splendid. I took off a star because, as nice as it is sometimes to not have every detail of a world explained, with something like magic, it does have to be explained to a certain extent. By-and-large I understand how the 'gates' work, but we're dropped right into the terminology within the first couple of pages without explanation and it was a little confusing and took me a few tries to get at it. Then, I just wasn't a huge fan of Odessa and it does take away from the book a little when you just don't like one of the MCs or narrators, but I'll explain more about Odessa when I get to her. Lan, Tianlan, is the first narrator, so I'm starting with her. She's what's called a Catseye (also something whose we had to figure out figure out ourselves), which means she can heal people or inflict sickness upon them in a form of dual magic. Two sides to every coin, right? I really, really love this idea and think it's a fantastic spin on the typical 'healer' character you see in fantasy. I suppose, theoretically, healers could always turn their magic to use by harming people, in fantasy books healers are relegated to only healing, save for here and in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha and Six of Crows trilogy, where healing and harming are seen as two sides of the same magic, though a person typically has more strength in one than the other, so it doesn't come out quite like it does here. I enjoyed being in Lan's POV because she's caught between wanting to do the right thing by the world that's been plunged into eternal night and also wanting to keep Odessa, her lover, safe. I also thought that Chupeco writing Lan has having PTSD after a pre-book incident was refreshing considering the number of books that just skip over the psychological effects events have on characters. This was also an area where Chupeco turned the 'healer' trope on its head a little, as Catseyes can work with physical illnesses and injuries, but also mental ones, taking on the role of healer and therapist (though obviously not for themselves), so not only do we get to see Lan experiencing PTSD, but we also see her coming to terms with it and seeking therapy-like treatment for it, which is pretty unusual in most novels. Despite being in the 'healer' role and having magic that can infect and destroy if she wishes, Lan is also skilled with a blade and hand-to-hand combat and has something of a quick temper. She's definitely the 'protector' type more than anything else and is striving to make sure everyone comes out alright in the end. Odessa comes next, because I'm grouping the characters based on where they're from and Lan and Odessa are both from Aranth. Odessa is one of the daughter-goddesses in the novel who is unaware her twin is alive. She has some kind of chronic illness that prevents her from being very active without tiring out and that Catseyes have been able to treat but not cure. In the beginning Odessa seems like she'll be a pretty good character, a little too doe-eyed and teary for my tastes, but has plenty of potential. Then she starts to get bratty and doesn't seem to have the ability to logically think things through. From a writing standpoint I really appreciate how complex Chupeco makes Odessa and I think within the plot it's super fascinating. It's even explained to us toward the end why Odessa made the sudden turn from teary-but-okay-princess to brat-with-little-rationale, so I appreciate the cleverness of how the reason was woven throughout Lan and Odessa's chapters for us to find but maybe not pinpoint exactly. However, the great reasoning behind it doesn't stop me from not liking Odessa. The weird power-imbalance Odessa has going on with Lan and their relationship that I'm not a huge favor of. They love each other, great, fantastic, I believe that and I actually think they make a great couple in the beginning of the novel. They certainly have a better set-up for a romance than Arjun and Haidee do, though their 'love' is only marginally slower moving, but I'm just a teeny bit uncomfortable with the power imbalance of Odessa being a goddess/princess and Lan being the person assigned to guard and protect her. It's one thing when Lan is serving the crown in some general 'technical' sense and the two of them are in a relationship and it's another thing entirely when Lan is serving Odessa and her mother directly. It would be better, I think, if Lan wasn't serving directly under Odessa or it was like Lan's previous relationship where both girls were rangers. While Lan has no issues disregarding Odessa's commands, the imbalance is still there and becomes a bit of a problem later, but is never fully addressed, so I'm not sure how I feel about that or about some of the scenes with Lan and dark!Odessa. The relationship has the potential in the beginning and it is, for the most part good, but then once the difference in rank and power becomes clearer and Odessa becomes darker I get just a little uncomfortable with it. Haidee is the other daughter-goddess and she lives in the Golden City on the always-day side of the planet. She's what's called a 'mechanika' in the world, but what we would classify as an engineer. She's quick on her feet, fiery, stubborn, and extremely empathetic. In one of her very first scenes she's crying over a days-dead whale, if that's any indication. As much as I love her determination, smarts, and stubbornness, her ignorance of the world and optimistic attitude do grate on my nerves at times. She's just a bit too happy-go-lucky in some instances, though it largely works out for her. I will be fair, Haidee is one of my favorites, but I feel like Chupeco set things up so that Haidee would always have things work out for her and it seems a bit too obvious at times. Despite my dislike of Odessa, things go wrong for her, sometimes very wrong, and while things do occasionally go wrong for Haidee and seem like they'll be bad, I don't ever really get the full-on sense of dread like I do with Odessa. Arjun and Haidee meet by the whale and their first scene involves them trying to kill each other. Naturally, he becomes her love interest. Arjun is, hands down, the funniest person in the entire book. He has a very dry sense of humor and can be extremely sarcastic. He follows along with the idea of prophecies and with Haidee's ideas a little to mellowly for what I'd been expecting given our introduction to him, which I think says more about the whole 'everything works out for Haidee' but than about him. I also enjoy that Arjun decided to go with a prosthetic magical rifle after he lost his hand (not a spoiler, it happened pre-book). I don't know how they engineer the things they do in the desert, but I just found it amusing that instead of engineering a hand or hook or knife or something they went with a rifle that could channel his fire magic. It really fits his personality, honestly. While Arjun's and Haidee's romance is definitely more power-balanced than Lan's and Odessa's, there are still some holes in it. Mainly that they meet and fall in love within the span of the book, which I'm pretty sure takes place over, like, a month. I love fantasy and dystopian, and sci-fi, but oh my god I am getting sick of the quick romances. Chupeco did a decent job of showing why they fell in love and how they respected each other and became friends before they fell in love, but it's still only been a month. Sorry, but I know 19-year-olds, being one and being in college, and I'm just really not certain that your 'month to love' romance is gonna last. There are different depths to love and you can love more than once, but the insta-true-love, will-survive-anything has just, for some reason, been getting on my nerves lately. Maybe in a couple months or years I'll be fine with it again, but right now I'm just not a fan, even if I do like the characters together. The mythology and general world-building in the book is also something I enjoyed. Chupeco keeps the ideas of duality, sacrifice, and "a demoness is what they call a goddess that men cannot control" going throughout the book. It centers around two young goddesses whose mother(s) are goddesses and a world that somehow stopped spinning and split into only-night and only-day, so there's obviously a lot of mythology and magic going into the base of this book. Since the 'Breaking,' as they call it, neither mother-goddess has really told the twins much about previous generations of goddesses. Odessa gets more of an education about it than Haidee does, but both are still largely left in the dark about their world's mythology, which allows Chupeco to reveal it to the reader in a way that feels natural without info-dumping. There's a lot to do with goddesses, prophecies, and rituals that starts to get unpacked in this one, but which mainly sets up for the sequel. I'm super interested in learning more about the goddesses and rituals in the next book and have plenty of theories regarding them. The duality piece of things is interesting, because you don't necessarily recognize it in the beginning or even halfway through the book. It was more toward the end that I began to see what Chupeco was doing with the night-day, ill-healthy, healer-'plague-giver' sort of balance. The goddesses are twins, as all goddesses before them have been, and that set-up is a fantastic literary device for setting up dualities. You can have the good twin vs. the evil twin, the knowledgeable vs. the ignorant, and so many other varieties, and Chupeco plays with a bit of each in each twin. Odessa knows more about their past from the start, but it's Haidee who learns more about it and their world on the way. Odessa starts out as the chronically-ill sister, but Haidee ends up drained and exhausted. Odessa becomes more and more morally complex and dark but still has soft spots, Haidee is blindingly optimistic but has moments of destructive rage. They're set up to mirror and foil one another, yet each still comes together in the end and finds strength in knowing their twin. The girls are quite similar even though the book sets up a lot of their differences. Without giving too many spoilers I can say that this is 100% reflected in where the plot takes us and the things that are revealed. In terms of world-building I thought Chupeco gave us very distinct settings, creatures, and peoples. The night-side of the world is described as very rainy and cold, with threats of storms, kraken, and icebergs. Though Lan and Odessa are only in the city for a short period of time, I remember the impression I got of it. Old bookstores, tall buildings, dreary because of the rain. This is set against the next setting Lan and Odessa experience, which is the borderlands near the Abyss. While these lands are still dark, there's more foliage described as well as eerie lakes, currents made of air that are strong enough to hold ships, and creatures of darkness and shadow. It is also here where the sky begins to lighten as they move closer to the Abyss and the always-day side of the world. This is even more different from the settings Arjun and Haidee encounter. The desert is vast and deadly, full of dangerous scorpions, an acid sea, and a sea of sand complete with sand-dolphins and sand-sea creatures. The desert is full of raiders and nomadic clans instead of shadow people, but the former can be just as deadly. The Golden City is more steampunk than the night city, Aranth, is described to be. It also seems to be full of snootier people than Aranth does, and all-in-all, despite it being a city run by a twin goddess with a twin goddess daughter, Haidee's city is a very different city from the one Lan and Odessa left. Then there's Inanna's Temple and the Abyss itself, which remind me of dawn and pure darkness, respectively, but still have their own distinct feelings and descriptions. It's very easy to get immersed in the world Chupeco has created here and it's one of those rare world-building experiences that makes me wish I could see it artistically rendered. The Never Tilting World is a good book with unique, distinct characters each with their own strengths and weaknesses that are explored throughout the book. Chupeco writes the characters relatively realistically, meaning they deal with physical and mental trauma as well as tough decisions they sometimes respond to poorly. The Arjun-Haidee romance felt kind of rushed and the Lan-Odessa romance felt like it had a power-imbalance I wasn't 100% comfortable with. Since there is another book, however, and since the Lan-Odessa romance had a lot more promise in the beginning than the middle and end, I'm hoping it'll get itself sorted out. I also dinged the book's score because of terminology that we're left to figure out for ourselves that really would've been better if it had just been explained outright. Definitely think it's a good read, though and would recommend picking it up if you enjoy fantasy.

Immortal Astral Goat Psychology

Welp, if I am not shitposting or RPing I might as well go into some fine astral-goat-psychology right now. I have been awake for what might been close to 40 hours now with that 11 hour flight crossing 9 different timezones and another good six hours to complete the travel and now just having downed some sugary caffeine beverage so I can hold out for maybe three more hours so I can keep my sleep rythm somehow intact.

Best time to make a lenghty in-depht headcanon-post, alright? I will probably collapse after finishing this delirious write-up but then it’s a complete breakdown with a slight hint of feeling accomplished. Gotta take what you can get, right?

For some reason I have always tended towards the “not-exactly-human-immortal” sort of characters. Things that resemble humans and even like them or some aspects of them very much to the point they’d like to be one even though that is a task they’d never accomlish, their timeless nature being part of the reasons. Always wondered why I gravitated towards such designs, now I know it’s my own fucked-up brain so yeah this might also just be me projecting my own mental mess somewhere so take it with a grain of salt.

Soraka meanwhile is a real special case. It is said that she “descended” of some sorts, that she turned into a regular “mortal”, but that’s only true when viewed from a certain distance. OG-Celestial level of distance. Going by visuals one might just consider her being of vastayan heritage, but that’s not what sets her apart from regular mortals. Surpreme regenerative and restorative powers as well as a perspective on the very fabric of existence itself that no other living being could possibly have make sure she will always be the odd one out no matter what she does. This and some other things might have led to certain psychological tics or patterns depending on how you’d want to call it.

1.) Soraka will never, EVER assume the most powerful/top-spot position in the room even if by all means she is the most qualified/strongest/fitting for the job.

There’s a certain reason Soraka prefers mortals over other celestials, and that is mostly their potential. Literally the one reason she came down to this plane of existence was that she knew who was running this reality (other celestial entities), and she apparently was woefully disappointed with what she was seeing. By her logic the celestials are UNFIT for their position to the point where a mere species with a POTENTIAL is worth paying more attention to. I am not sure if you can call this a really weird inferiortiy complex of some sort or if she just really wished that humans and vastaya would realize their potential so the multiverse is finally in better, possibly more qualified hands - and effectively taking the burden of her, even if it is not actual responsibility and only the “burden of knowing”.

2.) Despite her absurdly powerful magic she dislikes using it because that would interfere with her original goal.

Humans and Vastaya (and maybe even the Undead) have a potential to realize, however it is something they must achieve on their own to truly become something new and not become an OG-Celestial-knockoff. So ideally she shouldn’t even get involved, only in the most minimal ways. But she has all this power, yet she can’t really do anything with it. It’s a neverending source of frustration.

Combine this method of “subtle influence” with the previous point, and you might have a very clear basis for a personality that might very easily drift into an passive and lethargic state, who refuses to step forward even at times where they totally should and could. Especially when you combine this with the next point:

3.) The usual immortal-problem: the ones with limited time just become a blur, the other timless ones get stuck in their ways.

This usually goes against her philosophy about individual actions shaping the world and so on - but let’s be real, even in a world where a single person can gain the power to obliberate an entire city with the snap of an finger, how many people TRULY lead lives that actually posess agency and action-potential on a national level even? Especially positive long-term effects? You have a few powerful individuals and then those who’s lives get tangled with them, but everyone else, the “background noise” so to speak? Absolutely irrelevant.

This is already a downer, seeing fruitless yet repeating patterns over the course of centuries - but now imagine it also going against your core philosophy, and it getting shoved into your face again and again. Except Taric. He’s just a fellow with a goal and who has his priorities set and does his job. The gem-man is the one beacon of hope in a bucket of absolute nutjobs that maybe, just maybe, they also can sort things out. You shouldn’t get your hopes up too much tho...

It always irked me when people portray Soraka as this sort of alturistic healer, along with all the cliches that come with it (submissve, cute, weak, naive, you name it) when in reality she must sit on a massive bulk of frustration and some really bad days you better not bother her that she’d rather just spend alone in bed.

As much as I like me some adorable cute-sy Soraka content, I really with people would tap more into this somber, potentially even melanchonic side of her. Sure, her philosophy requires her to have a certain baseline of optimism regarding existence as a whole, but you know how it is - you never have the same optimism levels every day, and after so many years I doubt that the average for Soraka is in the exceptionally high area.

I just hope that in canon lore Soraka finds some actual friends to help her through the “bad” days...

Varg is wolf in swedish. Varg was also originally a nickname given by his friends at the Steppe. It was the only thing he kept after starting his new life in Ishgard and severing his ties with his homeland.

Blacksoul was given by his comrades in the army for being so ruthless towards enemies - both the ones on the battlefield and the ones captured.

Q1 : If you could write your character your way in their own movie, what would it be called, what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about?

A1 : He’s been busy sticking his spoon into so many soups during his life that you could probably make a trilogy of his fooleries feats. The first part would tell about his early life in Azim Steppe and how he was forced to leave from there, the second part about how he found his soulmate and adapted to his new life in Ishgard, and how it all eventually ended up into a shitstorm, and the third one would be the current storyline. No clue about the name, though. The Soulforge would be perfect but too bad it’s taken.

Q2 : What would their soundtrack/score sound like?

A2 : Bloodborne, Dark Souls and Amnesia the Dark Descent OSTs are absolutely the closest ones you could get to Varg. Orchestral, choir, bowed string instruments, both epic and monstrous. Even if there were more peaceful pieces here and there, while listening to them you’d still have that same feeling of dread you used to have while playing the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill games and finding a safe room: you just barely escaped death but can��t stay in the safe haven forever.

Q3 : Why did you start writing this character?

A3 : He’s quite different compared to my Forsaken shadow priestess in WoW, whom I used to RP for... two or three years? Long story short: I wanted something else for a change. I also used to have an old Forsaken death knight, who was a lot more similar to Varg, but he was more evil. He existed pretty much only for occasions when someone needed a true villain for some plot. He was funny however and I always thought it was a pity I didn’t get chances to RP him more often.

Q4 : What first attracted you to this character?

A4 : He’s a mixture of four different OCs of mine, with a bit of his original spice ofc. One of them came into being in, uh, somewhat obscure conditions. Kept seeing him in my dreams when I was a kid, and he became one of my imaginary friends I used to have back then. And not just one of the many, but the closest one. Also generally in entertainment I couldn’t care less about Lukes and Frodos. Villains, tragic heroes and the like are my thing. They’re usually the most multilayered and interesting characters.

Q5 : Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse.

A5 : Perfectionism. I’m similar and it sometimes drives me nuts to watch him neglecting himself while trying to achieve perfection. If I could physically talk to him I would go and slap him and be like “EAT. SLEEP. YES THE THING IS GOOD ENOUGH ALREADY. LEAVE IT.”

Q6 : What do you have in common with your muse?

A6 : Well, already kind of answered this one, but wait, there’s more: insomnia, nightmares, PTSD, misanthropy and cynicism come to mind first. And booze. How could I almost forget booze? I believe I know what misery is so I’m good at RPing miserable characters and make them look as authentic as possible. *lols like Alcyone from Magic Knight Rayearth* We both also have a strong sense of justice and nonexistent sympathy for those who use others as stepping stones. Aye I know, sounds a lot like a self-insert character, but it’s not like that. It’s more like... before meeting him/the OCs he’s based on, I used to be quite a scentless and tasteless kid. Similarities and peer support attract. And I’ve also learned from him.

It’s also a lot like me and Lareine. We became friends because we had 95% of the same interests and problems but perhaps that’s why we get along so well and understand each other.

Q7 : How does your muse feel about you?

A7 : He would probably hate and like me at the same time. Or couldn’t decide. We both like peace and quiet, doing our job well is fundamental and our basic values are pretty much the same. We would get along well if we worked in the same place. However, unlike him, I have some horrid procrastination seasons, crippling self-esteem issues, tend to put other people’s needs and opinions above my own and keep stressing about things for 7 billion souls instead of just myself. I’m suspicious of pretty much everything else except Lareine and our plushie crow Agatha, except that Agatha creeps me out sometimes as well when she takes out a knife and sits next to my bed at night, staring at me, can’t watch Hachiko without bawling my eyes out during the entire movie, love puppies and kittens and danger noodles and I’m addicted to video games. Very likely he’d kick me out as well.

Q8 : What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with?

A8 : Varg would never admit it to himself, but I think he gets best along with people who are a bit silly in some way, and who get on his nerves by being too carefree and doing stupid things. Lareine and Iris, when they’re behaving. Arsene, who’s kind at everyone. Currently Shaura is my favorite. Varg himself is so uptight people like them help breaking his gray routines. Also a bonus: he doesn’t see them as a threat, so that’s probably the closest he’s able to get to relaxing among other people.

Q9 : What gives you inspiration to write your muse?

A9 : I’m a fan of my own characters. It doesn’t feel like I would’ve created them. I saw them with my third eye or something and I’ve just written for others to read what I’ve seen. I don’t plan RPs beforehand. I just let the hound loose and let him do whatever he wants. So far I haven’t got tired of my characters’ antics and could just write more. The only obstacles are limited hours per day, necessary evils like eating and sleeping, procrastination, trying to sort out my life, and the damn FFXIV. SOMEONE PLEASE TAKE IT OUT OF MY HANDS.

“I can’t believe it took me four years to be able to take these classes,” I said to my friend, Claire as we filed into the giant lecture hall. “You’d think that topics as niche as ‘religious deities and ritual practices’ and ‘the psychology of murder and criminology’ would be a bit more available’.

“Well you know, the professors are in demand. They each have been studying their practices for years, just started teaching though,” said Claire, absentmindedly as she claimed the seats in the front row and center of the hall.

“Okay...how do you know all of that?” I asked.

“I grew up with them…. my mom worked with them on some cases… she’s a sheriff. They’re pretty cool people. Came over for dinner a few times… they were present for some… awkward conversations.” Shuddered Claire.

“Do I even wanna know”

“Hell no”

“Fair enough,” I said as a tall man in a suit came in. He had long brown hair and eyes that could stop anyone in their tracks. He was also incredibly tall and had a body chiseled from marble. Immediately he set his suitcase down and started speaking, “Hello class, wow, big crowd. Hi, my name's Samuel Winchester, please for the love of everything call me Professor or Professor Winchester.”

There was immediate buzzing around the room, everything from women humming in approval and men scoffing at the Adonis in front of them.

When he turned around my head snapped to Claire and she smiled at me… that shit eating grin that spilled that she knew he had an effect on me.

“Something wrong, Y/N?” Asked Claire with a toothy grin…

When I went to shush her the professor spoke up, “Claire… do you have something to share?”

“Oh, I have a few things to share” Claire nudged me and my eyes went wide. I’d known Claire since we both enrolled in the same year, both with an odd interest in the supernatural, she became my go-to for everything weird and out of the norm. She always praised me for my prowess in religious studies, I also knew a lot about different abnormal psychology, which is my major. This is also why she didn’t leave me alone until we took these classes together. Finally, with one semester left to go, I was finally able to take the course, purposely leaving some elective credits for this.

“Go for it, since you’re so eager to share that I can’t even get through the ground rules for this class.”

“Well first off, hi, I’m Claire, criminal justice major, just like mom intended but you know this…. I’m excited to see whatcha got Sam… teach me somethin’” she bounced as my face turned white next to her.

“The first lesson for you, Claire…” the professor pointed to himself, “Professor Winchester… not Sam. Okay? That one was free… don’t make me call Jody.”

Claire huffed as she crossed her arms, then I heard his deep voice address me, “You okay there? You look a little pale.”

Why is my mouth not working, his gaze is so intense yet.. gentle? How can a literal giant look so soft and patient…

“Now is the point in the interaction where you talk” chuckled Claire. The rest of the class chuckled as the professor shot a glare towards her.

“She’s just trying to cover the fact that she isn’t getting any special favors and that she’s on thin ice. Mere minutes away from having her mom roll up here in a police car gunning for her ass, actually… don’t worry… you okay?” He turned his attention back to me.

“Y-yes sir,” I replied.

“Professor works just fine,” responded the professor as he turned his back once more.

He wrote the word ‘rules’ on the board.

His voice boomed as he addressed the lecture hall, “first things first some ground rules. I am going to be teaching real religious deities and practices. This means actual runes and witchcraft, which also means that under no circumstances are you to practice these, unless they are a part of your religious beliefs, of course. This means… absolutely no cursing, hexing, summoning, or rune writing in this or any classroom!”

Claire smirked, which the professor caught and didn’t let slide, “and under no circumstances is there any potion or relic making in any way, shape or form… Claire, I’m looking at you…”

Claire rolled her eyes as the class got underway.

After discussing the syllabus and course materials he began the lecture with a simple question, “Who can tell me the major differences in between Wicca and Witchcraft?”

I raised my hand and he picked me.

“That’s a trick question”

“Oh is it, explain.”

“Wicca is also known as Pagan Witchcraft. In Wicca they have no central deity, instead worshipping and giving thanks to the elements and personifications of these elements. Sometimes through prayer, other times through rituals that call upon the personifications of these elements. This is where the classical form of witchcraft comes from. There are light and dark witches, each specializing in their own forms of worship, although dark witches are known to hex and curse others, where as white witches can be seen as healers. Some who practice Wicca don’t even dabble in classical witchcraft at all…”

The professor’s jaw was wide open as I finished my explanation, “therefore...what you asked is a trick question.”

The professor smiled as he said, “I’ve been teaching this class for two years now and no one has gotten that question correct on the first try...except for you...bravo…” he then turned to the rest of the class, “for the rest of you who aren’t walking encyclopedias on Wicca and Witchcraft, read pages 13 to 45 for next class… although you, young lady may just wanna read it for fun” he said with a wink.. “alright...class dismissed, see? Who knew witchcraft isn’t that scary after all? See you on Thursday guys.”

Claire grabbed my hand and dragged me towards the podium, the closer I got to him the larger his frame became.

Finally, we were right in front of him, Claire practically bulldozing all of the other students that crowded the podium…

“Since the class is over, can I call you Sam now, Professor.” Over annunciated Claire.

“Depends on who we’re in front of, and how did it take you two years to get into my class, Claire? .” He said as he closed his briefcase, when he looked up he said, “ahhh my star pupil, knowing that much on the first day, I’m impressed.”

“This is my friend, Y/N Y/L/N… remember I came home raving about her when we first met?”

“Oh yeah… Claire said you had some major knowledge but I wasn’t expecting you to blow everyone out of the water on the first day…good job.”

“Thank you, “ I said shyly.

He looked at his watch and then said: “shoot I’m meeting someone to go over lesson plans, umm it was nice meeting you and Claire don’t get her in trouble.”

As soon as Claire was a few feet away, his hand brushed my arm and he said, “seriously, great work today. Just so you know…” he leaned in closer, “now that I know how smart you are, I’m going to be expecting much, much more out of you...no pressure” he chuckled. The next thing I knew he was out the door.

By the time I met Claire outside I was completely confused. Claire just looked at me as I said, “He is seriously gorgeous.”

“Eww, dude, he’s like my older brother, practically an uncle! Please don’t give me that mental image.” She smiled as she nudged me.

“You knew he would do that to me, didn’t you?” I asked, almost amused.

“Maybe…”

I gave her the stink eye.

“Okay, I did know… What with the way you react to Channing Tatum and Thor, of course I’m not gonna tell you that Sam’s your type… knowing you…. You would’ve run for the hills and you would’ve never gotten to know him!” Said Claire.

“He’s a Professor, Claire… Not a Tinder date…” I scoffed, “Being with him in any way would be unethical.”

“Oh please, I know you... I’ve known you for four years, which means that I know that for Sam, you’d break any law in any and every country if he asked you to. Hell, you even called the man ‘sir’. Who does that?” Snickered Claire.

“Shut up, Claire. It just slipped out. He’s intimidating, he’s the literal size of a skyscraper ” I defended.

“If you think that he’s intimidating, then you’re gonna love the next Professor, come on, class starts in 15!” Said Claire as she walked me down the long corridor of the building.

I stopped mid-stride “Wait here it is, room, 132.” As soon as we walked into the hall it looked like a Halloween store, with different photos and mannequins of horror movie characters.

As we filed into the hall, Claire, once again, immediately pulled me to the front and center of the lecture hall. Not too long after that a man walked in and sat next to me. He had piercing green eyes and a jaw that could cut glass, absolutely stunning. He was also dressed up, my guess was that he is just a curious business student since he had a lollipop and looked as casual as his getup allowed.

I heard constant chatter about the professor, everything from him being a jackass to him being incredibly good looking and flirtatious.

As soon as the lecture hall filled up and it was time for class the man that was sitting next to me nudged me and said, “well, looks like it’s showtime,” and got up.

My jaw dropped as he stood and jumped onto the raised lecture area.

“Murder… It’s messy, most times…” The man said as he opened up a briefcase, already on the podium, he handed papers to the first student he saw. Some students chuckled at his shocking yet honest opening words.

“You are here to learn not just about why people kill, but how, how could this person kill another human being? What were they thinking, if they were thinking at all? What’s their motive, What made them tick….How they kill the way they kill, and who was the person that they killed if that had anything to do with it. You are also going to learn some ties in between these guys,” he pointed to the more prominent horror movie character mannequin,” and the real thing.” He continued.

“My name is Dean Winchester and I am a professor in Abnormal Psychology, specializing in psychological profiling of killers who were dumb enough to get caught.”

He looked around the class as he stated, “This is going to get gruesome if the name of the course didn’t give it away already. You will see dismembered bodies, you will see blood, you will see the worst of humanity in this class… So if you’re squeamish… this isn’t the class for you. You can get up and leave, no one will judge you.”

Immediately 10 to 20 students got up and left, “The remainder of you… you are one of two types of people. You are either a murderer who’s looking to brush up on technique or you’re morbidly curious. That’s the only way you’d be crazy enough to take a class that isn’t even required for a criminal justice major.”

“Now, before I get the influx of questions, yes Professor Sam Winchester is my brother, we are not twins, I am four years older than him, we don’t discuss student’s grades but we do discuss students which means all of the rules for his classroom apply to mine.”

The professor’s face turned hard as steel, “ No potions, no hexing, cursing, rune making, or summoning. If you try, we will trace it back to you, and we will not only report you but reverse it onto you with no way of removing it… I’ve already had many students try to make a voodoo doll, love potions, persuasion spells, the whole nine so don’t think we haven’t seen it and that we won’t do anything about it.”

He then turned to face the board as he said, “don’t believe us, you’re more than welcome to try and find out. Every single shaman, healer, spellcaster, witch, all of them have their special signatures… we will find yours and you will not like what comes next.”

He started writing, “You can all read the syllabus on your own time, since you’re all college students, I assume you can read. If you give me 100% off your efforts, your grades will reflect that.. if you give me shitty work…. you’ll get a shitty grade, simple enough.”

“But we are starting… now.” He turned around to reveal that he wrote ‘serial killers’ on the board…

“Claire, about damn time you’re in my class. Tell me, what do you know about Ted Bundy?” He said as he crossed his arms and leaned on the podium, casually licking and sucking on the lollipop as he waited for an answer.

Claire looked at him and said, “well he’s a serial killer…”

Dean’s eyes narrowed as he said, “well, no shit Sherlock, what else, Claire….give me something!” Said Dean as he motioned in the air… “Anything…”

“Ummm he only killed women…”

He huffed and nodded as he said “Yes but what else, can anyone tell me what else he did? Anything about him?”

I raised my hand and the professor licked his lips and called on me, “C’mon give me something good..”

I started, “Ted Bundy, your classic deranged serial killer. He was active in the 1970’s and admitted to killing 30 women, although his kill count is expected to be much higher. He was most known for kidnapping, raping, and killing women, then dismembering the bodies, he was executed in 1989.”

His eyebrows shot up as he said, “tell me, did he take any souvenirs of his kills?”

“Yes, the heads of the women.”

“THANK YOU!!!” He exclaimed, “You must be Y/N… Heard nothing but good things from Claire and Sammy, I only expect the best out of you… So let’s get a little more challenging here… Tell me, Y/N… What’s the difference in between Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy?”

I replied simply, “John Wayne Gacy, nicknamed ‘the killer clown’ because his day job was being a clown at parties. Active in the 80′s. His victims were teenage boys and young men. His confirmed kill count is 33. He was also known for torturing as well as sexually assaulting and murdering the victims.”

“Very good Y/N… Something tells me you'll be teaching me a few things too.” Dean replied as he licked his lips and looked at me up and down.

After a lengthy class on different serial killers, he assigned us homework and dismissed the class, everyone practically ran out except for Claire and me, as she insisted on personally introducing me to him.

When I turned around to get my bag, I felt someone behind me. Then I heard the professor’s voice loud and clear directly behind me.”

“Hey, Claire… I remember you telling me about Y/N being smart and all, but you didn’t tell me that she had brains and beauty too.” He said, immediately making me blush.

When I turned around he was practically chest to chest with me. Noticing the awkward distance he stepped back a bit.

“Really Dean? You just met her and you’re already hitting on her?” Claire quipped, “it was bad enough that you couldn’t keep your eyes off of her the entire class.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Claire.” Refuted the professor. He then turned his attention towards me, “I just wanted a proper introduction. Hello, My name’s Dean Winchester, it’s a pleasure to meet you and I can’t wait to have you in my class.” He extended his hand as I stood there, dumbfounded.

Claire nudged me and I accepted the handshake saying, “hello, and I can’t wait to get to have your class. This is really interesting stuff.”

Dean smiled, “The human mind is interesting… especially when a few screws are loose… but something tells me you already know that. Judging by the rockstar performance you put on today. I’m assuming that much of my course material as well as Sammy’s is going to be child’s play for you… So I want to offer you an opportunity.”

“Sure!” I exclaimed.

He smiled as he continued, “I know you’re graduating in a semester, and since you’re interested in this… I need a research assistant. I’m working on a book, something that the college is making me do. But I need people like you to help me research some things, it’s a paid position and I don’t mind counting it as an independent study. You’re an abnormal psychology major so I was hoping you’d be interested.”

“I am more than interested.” I immediately replied.

“Great. Then meet me in my office at 3 pm. I’ll have the W-9 paperwork and all of that drawn up by then. I look forward to working with you.”

Claire interrupted with, “hey…. why didn’t you offer me that?”

He just stared at her and said, “really? Claire no offense but you are nowhere near qualified for this.”

“What? I’m qualified!”

“Oh really, where do you get your information from? What website?”

“Wikipedia”

“Exactly… I rest my case…now I need to go and meet my brother for lunch… rub it in his face about how I got the notorious Ms. Y/L/N as my research assistant. I’ll see you both next class.”

DEANS POV:

Room 412: Professor Samuel Winchester.

I scoffed at the nameplate and just opened the door. Sam looked at me almost insulted…

“Dude… knock much?” He commented as he went back to grading papers or whatever he was doing.

“Oh please Sammy, it’s bad enough that we had to retire, now you’re complaining about manners too?”

“Listen Dean… I know this is hard for you.” Said Sam.

“Hard?” I commented. “This… this isn’t hard.. pretending I can do very well Sam. Burying Jack and mom… now that was hard. What’s impossible which somehow you are executing perfectly is acting like neither of them ever existed.”

“Dean, we had to move on and we agreed..”

“I know… we agreed that retirement is the only option. The only way we can save the people that we love.. I know..”

Sam looked at me, with pain in his eyes, “you still having those dreams?”

I looked at him, “every single night. Mom throws herself on a bed of wood and waits for Jack to light it. Jack lights it and then walks into the flames with her… I can’t move… can’t do anything, Sammy.” I huffed as I loosened my tie and collapsed into the chair next to his desk motioning in the air.

“Maybe you should go to see somebody, Dean.” He replied gently.

“Like who? A shrink?” I laughed, “ I will be in the nearest asylum instantaneously, Sammy. How do I explain half of the shit we’ve been through? ‘Well, it all started when a demon nailed my mother to the ceiling and burned her from the inside out in my childhood home when I was 4’.... can’t imagine that going too well.”

“No… but you can talk to me.” He said as he put his pen down and looked at me, “So, listen Dean, I …”

“Not here… and not now, Sammy.” I interrupted, “The only person I’m seeing is the lunch lady for a double bacon cheeseburger with fries… now are you coming with me or are you going to stay up here doing this?” I asked.

“Ok Dean… let’s eat.”

When we got onto the elevator I struck up a new conversation, “so… Y/N Y/L/N…. she’s something else, right?”

“Yeah, she’s crazy smart.”

“One would think she’s a hunter,” I said absentmindedly.

“No way… no scars, not one scrap of flannel on her.”

“Y’know not every hunter wears flannel, Sammy. But you’re right… she isn’t battle hardened. Shame… she’d be one hell of a hunter…” I flashed a smirk and shrugged at Sam.

“Dean…” Sam warned.

“I know I know… keep a low profile… only kill the monsters that come looking for us.”

“And?”

I huffed, “and never bring someone else into the life… I know Sammy.”

When we got off of the elevator Sam said, “I’m actually thinking of asking her to be my research assistant.”

“Too late” I replied.

“You didn’t.” Said Sam as he stopped me.

“What? Try and find someone willing to look at gruesome crime scene photos all day and actually like it… I dare you…” I said as I continued walking, “by the way most people think that your field is mostly lore based… remember, and who doesn’t like to read fiction all day? I’m sure you’ll find someone.”

“Not someone like her…” Said Sam.

“Why do you think I asked first? You snooze you lose Sammy Boy.” I said as I play punched him on the shoulder.

“Oh please dean, you only hired her because she’s hot.”

“You know I’m almost insulted that you’d think that… she’s a student, Sammy”

“But she won’t be in three months… I know how you think Dean. She’s truly intelligent… she has a future… one that doesn’t involve your bed.”

“Listen the fact that she’s hot is beside the point, Sammy. She has the brains and the ability to digest information that others would go crazy doing. She’s perfect for the job.”

“Well, she’s perfect for my job too…”

“Sammy, this is a student, not a competition… by the way, I already won…”

“Did she sign the papers?”

My eyes went wide.

“Exactly”

The symbolism of changing clothes: Hualian and color schematics. (Spoilers up to Tian Guan Ci Fu Chapter 109).

In the most recent chapter, Xie Lian, Hua Cheng, Wind Master, and Earth Master all go to a small town where their flamboyant attire stands out. Everyone changes except for Xie Lian, who dresses casually because he has spent most of his immortal life wandering the mortal realms and therefore he is better equipped to handle them. During the protagonist's backstory, author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu states that Xie Lian has always like to wear white clothes, and reminds the reader of this fact throughout the previous two cases Xie Lian handles. In this case, Xie Lian's choice of clothing remains pretty static.

He had gotten wiser throughout the years, and grown to see (perhaps) the folly of his younger ways. He had grown resigned to misfortune to the point that he scared away Venerable demons because they couldn't feed off of his broken dreams. This is some serious depression right here. Even though his consistent choice of clothing paralleled his consistent personality traits, Xie Lian's clothing choice is perhaps symbolic of more meanings.

Taoism is the cultural paradigm pervading Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's cultivation novels (or probably cultivation novels in general, but I have only read hers thus far), and some of the things it emcompasses are the concepts of yin and yang energy. White, or Xie Lian's chosen color of dress, represents the masculine yin energy. It is, as Mo Xiang Tong Xiu states many times in Mo Dao Zu Shi, the energy of life, an active energy, and a force for good. This "force for good" was shown as Xie Lian modeled the perfect cultivation student as a Crown Prince, and it became his driving motivation when he reneged against the divine rules of interfering with mortal matters.

This active energy means he is by nature a proactive person. He created a sign saying "renovation needed" by his latest tiny temple, he didn't wait for reinforcements when he learned his idiot cousin was kidnapped by the rebels but left to rescue him anyways, he volunteered to help the noble family when they threw out a doctor to gain a chance at feeding the two kids. From the time he was mortal until Xie Lian's present day, he has seen a need and strived to meet it. Giving rain, saving the child Hong, helping the merchants in their caravan. He has a desire to provide for and protect others -whether from royal duty to the people or compassion matters not- which has become innate over 800 years. It's instinctive. He has become the model of yin energy personified, although his portrayal of leadership is not what one might expect.

The "leaders" one could think of are loud, commanding, in control of everyone and everything. However, that level of micromanaging may produce hostility, helplessness, and resentment among the subordinates. Xie Lian steps in as a leader only when no one else knows how to or even wants to handle it. His main goal is calming people during times of paranormal crisis, like his many attempted directions to the mob on the mountain, or the directions to the soldiers not to jump into the pit. He also wants to keep the others safe, which lends itself to his self-sacrificial tendencies. He understands that even his subordinates have a right to run away from the case, even if that strands him in a precarious position. He listens to their concerns and mediates their fights. Although this may seem like the caricature of the "weak" leader, Xie Lian's leadership methods show the people he works with that he is dedicated to providing their safety and peace.

Rather than proclaiming he will protect them, as he did when he was the Crown Prince of Xian Le, Xie Lian tells the merchants he will go with them and demonstrates through actions that he will protect them along the way. He used this method of showing before telling as he protected the child Hong (whom he'd first saved when Hong fell from the sky) from his evil cousin's murderous schemes. He ordered the carriage stopped, carefully picked up Hong, did some crowd control, then marched that kid right up to the palace healers. He showed Hong he was there to protect him, murmuring comforting things to him along the way.

That child, as you may suspect from Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's love for creating many identities for her characters, likely will turn out to be the devotee at the run-down Temple of the Flower Crown Prince, aka the Temple where Xie Lian first noticed and appreciated the white flower in his statue's hand. It was implied that Hong, touched by Prince Xie Lian's rescues of him, looked up to him even after Xie Lian ascended to godhood. Hong looked up to him enough to do something different than the rest of the followers: establish his own personal symbol for Xie Lian in the white flower, and actually listen to Xie Lian's instructions to his worshippers on how to worship him. Touched by these two things, Xie Lian protected Hong from the children bullying him and invited him to sustain himself from the fruit offerings given. Hong confessed that he didn't know what to live for and Xie Lian told him "Live for me."

With all the political unrest, drought worries, and epidemic to worry about, Xie Lian didn't remember this child was Hong, who he'd saved from falling and from his cousin before. He merely saved him again and left to do more martial-godly stuff. Eventually, Hong heard through gossip that Xie Lian was on the battlefield fighting the people who wanted to escape the droughts. That, I believe, was when he first began pursuing Xie Lian, probably beginning as a form of hero worship. He snuck onto the wall guard then, and caught a glimpse of Xie Lian and his assistants as they guarded the royal capital. They got notice that Qi Rong was kidnapped and Xie Lian, ever a man god of action, left alone over the wall to fight them.

Hong siezed his chance then and followed him to the mountain, even after he was vastly outstripped by Xie Lian. He still caught up eventually to help Xie Lian deal with the plants, and sliced them down in a fit of anger while they tormented his hero. At this point Hong only ever wanted to pay back his hero for saving him, but was forced to watch Xie Lian harm himself rather than injure the child nearby. Indecency aside, Hong was probably enraged by having to watch his idol stab himself under the influence of demon plants. From there, it isn't hard to imagine Hong learning, perhaps as a young god himself, the exact effects of those demons. He would have learned that Xie Lian would rather sacrifice himself than kill another person. And even if he wouldn't die, he had been prepared to make that sacrifice. It isn't hard to imagine Hong becoming enraged at those demons Xie Lian had faced, before he had known what they would make him do. It isn't hard to imagine Hong, a nascent Demon King, seeking out and destroying all of those kinds of demons in a form of vengeance.

By this point you have probably arrived at the same conclusion as me: Hong/Hua Cheng/San Lang is in love with Xie Lian. He is pursuing him romantically (as well as sexually, though I'm not writing this essay about that) throughout the eras. Yada yada, this was in the summary Mo Xiang Tong Xiu provided with her novel, stop telling me this. I get it. But she likes to take an incredibly roundabout approach to storytelling, not addressing these things until at least 20 chapters later. As of right now the part(s?) when these things are discussed by the characters in-universe have not yet been translated. So forgive my redundance.

Mo Xiang Tong Xiu likes to give color schemes with her main pairings. This was true with Wei Wuxian (red and black) and Lan Wangji (white and blue). It also goes for Xie Lian and Hua Cheng as well. Xie Lian is white, and Hua Cheng is red and black. There might be other colors mentioned for both which I haven't picked up on, so I will only focus on those three. This essay began with everyone besides Xie Lian changing clothes. Hua Cheng changed into black clothes from a previous outfit which was a white robe beneath a red one. Let's examine how that color psychology helps him pursue Xie Lian's affections.

First of all, the red and white. Red is the color of passion, anger, excitement, and danger. It is attractive and alluring. These adjectives all describe the person Hua Cheng became over his 800 year existence. They were shaped by his determination and drive, his tenacity and his passion. His love for Xie Lian shows in his fixing the door, kissing him in the lake, sending up 3,000 lanterns. His love is the kind of unbounded, head-over-heels timeless love we have heard about in the Odyssey: he is the one seeking to find his way back home, back to the person he belongs with. He said so when he told Xie Lian (paraphrased) "Paradise Mansion is a house but not a home. It doesn't feel as much of a home as your tiny cottage does." When he is at the shrine with Xie Lian he is laughing and joking, offering to do domestic things simply because he is content. Here, his red is affection.

When Xie Lian is in danger, his red becomes the red of power and anger. After Xie Lian got stung by a scorpion snake, Hua Cheng immediately stopped the swelling by cutting the wound with a borrowed cauterized knife and sucking out most of the poison. When Xie Lian jumped into the pit after him, Hua Cheng had already killed all the wolves and was waiting to catch him at the bottom. Heavenly officials all told tales of how he caused only death and devastation in his wake.

Perhaps, if he hadn't had someone to look up to, he would have already fulfilled that prophecy of destroying the world.

But with Xie Lian's influence, he had someone to look up to. He had some model of morality in the Crown Prince who had saved him three, four, five times without even demanding thanks in return. Hua Cheng had plenty of time to learn about Xie Lian's compassionate and just lifestyle through hearsay and word-of-mouth news. He had plenty of time to analyze on the actions he'd seen Xie Lian perform firsthand and gain a reasonable grasp on his personal morality. By adopting some form of Xie Lian's moral code, Hua Cheng chose not to kill the entire world. He fought his so-called destiny with Xie Lian as assistance. Or perhaps? Perhaps his evil fate, bound far in the distance like a train stop down the track, was entirely shifted, a shifting of the rails so to speak, the moment he heard Xie Lian, the god who didn't appear to mortals anymore, whisper those words: "Live for me."

He truly took them to heart, although in a different way than Xie Lian probably intended. Rather than living out his life to make Xie Lian proud of him, he strove to become someone on equal footing to the pedestal in his mind he had created for Xie Lian. He strove to become someone who could properly charm Xie Lian and earn his trust. He wanted to be as powerful as Xie Lian was in his heyday. He wanted to have Xie Lian see him as a dependable and trustworthy person, but he probably ran into trouble finding the Flower Crown Prince after Xie Lian descended to the mortal realm for the second time. Everyone may have either made fun of Xie Lian when Hua Cheng asked after him, or flat out didn't care to learn or pass on his location. And so Hua Cheng made his own fortune, embraced his own power, became the Demon King who would kill everyone except the two gods who had formerly assisted Xie Lian.

If there is some plot to Xie Lian's second fall which complicates this somewhat--and knowing Mo Xiang Tong Xiu there probably is what with 135-6 chapters untranslated-- please know that it hasn't been translated yet, and that I am not a psychic. Anyways, when Hua Cheng 'first' appeared to Xie Lian, his clothing was crimson maple leaves on a white background. This shows that his own personality, vibrant and powerful, has been affected profoundly by the gentle, compassionate, noble personality of Xie Lian. He keeps Xie Lian's personality closer to his heart- and shows it to fewer people -than he does with his own personality. Hua Cheng said earlier on in the novel that he would give his ashes- his own biggest weakness- to someone worthy, someone kind who would guard them and do with them as they wished. And that if, at any point, he did something that person didn't like, that person could end him right then and there. Then he left the next morning, leaving Xie Lian with a ring on a silver chain. Suspicious? Hm. Coincidental? Very.

He has known Xie Lian for almost as long as Feng Xin, and nearly as long as Mu Qing has. He has known Xie Lian better than most other followers, since before he was a god. Hua Cheng even defied Xie Lian's orders of forgetting him, as well. That QianDeng Temple was probably built hundreds of years ago, as soon as Hua Cheng became a Demon King, and just sat there waiting for him to bring Xie Lian to see it. Since no one in the crowd was talking about it, and no one ever suggested going near it as a dare, it is reasonable to induct that Hua Cheng built it awhile ago, and Hua Cheng enforced strict punishments towards anyone who dared go near it. He probably tested out E-Ming on whoever tried to visit it, whoever commented on it, etc. Then the rumors got around that you'd be tortured for looking at it so everybody in Ghost City stopped. Once Hua Cheng showed QianDeng Temple to Xie Lian, he was probably nervous that he defied those orders, to forget the god whom he'd idolized, but luckily for him Xie Lian has a shitty memory and was impressed instead of embarrassed or angry at him. Xie Lian has mostly been ostracized from the Heavenly Community due to his infamy and wandering the mortal realms. He doesn't have people with a similar sense of humor to talk to, he's mostly lonely. Which brings us to the black robe: the role Hua Cheng dons in an attempt to win Xie Lian's favor.

In the yin-yang symbol, the two tapering swirls of black and white have a dot of the opposite color inside them. The white is the yin, and the black is the yang. Those two are eternally matched with each other for eternity, a profound meaning not lost on Hua Cheng when he chooses his clothing next. Since Xie Lian has no need to change his outfit, as he already blends in, Hua Cheng changes his own outfit to complement that. Yang energy in Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novels is typically the energy of the dead, malevolent energy, the resentful power which a certain necromancer harnessed for personal gain. This kind of energy is what ghosts, demons, and the like all share, and as King of Demons it fits Hua Cheng to change to an outfit of its color.

However, the inherent paradox within their relationship is that fundamentally, Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are pitted on opposite spiritual axioms. This is much more complicated than the "opposites attract" adage; Hua Cheng has similar strategies and theories to Xie Lian about the cases they solve together. Xie Lian is happy that his funny password made Hua Cheng laugh. No, there's parts of their personalities picked up by the other and folded into them, whether consciously or not. Hua Cheng's persistence at following Xie Lian during the Qi Rong's rescue becomes Xie Lian's persistence at hunting the fetus spirit, even if he has to swallow it AND his sword to do so. Xie Lian's intervention on Hua Cheng's death becomes Hua Cheng sending "greetings" to tyrants because he has standards for who's allowed to be on the throne, you know. They reflect each other, both looking in a puddle of water, both dripping from the blood of their casualties, accidental or not. The difference is, Hua Cheng can bear that weight of casualties differently than Xie Lian.

Xie Lian considers himself a has-been. He was great once, but not anymore. He failed to do what he'd said he'd do, and paid the price with followers and powers. Hua Cheng, after getting back into contact with him, is just as smitten now as he had ever been before. He showed Xie Lian a roomfull of swords just to hear him ramble for hours about how cool all the swords were and then told him, point-blank, "You can have all these swords." This Demon King wants to give Xie Lian reasons to be happy and excited again. He wants him to go on rants about the stuff he enjoys just so he can watch and listen to the Flower Crown Prince talk, his eyes sparkling, his expression unguarded and happy like he once was.

After they visited QianDeng Temple together, Hua Cheng explained to Xie Lian that none of his things could be stolen from Paradise Manor without his permission. Elaborating further with "...once something is in my hands, it's mine," Hua Cheng might be simply making things up sarcastically. Or, it could be one of the times when he is deadly serious and every word is accurate. We as a reader can't quite tell if Xie Lian is fully processing this, but he thinks to the first time he met Hua Cheng in the Ghost City. There, Hua Cheng had placed his hands carefully over Xie Lian's to help him roll two sixes on the dice. Did that mean he had already claimed Xie Lian as his? Does Xie Lian know the romantic implications behind that? Did he recognize the romantic intentions behind Hua Cheng's kiss? Mo Xiang Tong Xiu experience says that he didn't, but the clues are blaringly obvious to the reader.

Xie Lian has never left Paradise Manor through a door without Hua Cheng by his side. He has left through the roof, but that was one time. It will be interesting to see whether he can leave by himself later. Casein point: Hua Cheng built Xie Lian's door. Did he use the same spell on it that he did with Paradise Manor doors? If so, how can Xie Lian use it when he's not around? A viable explanation is that by giving Xie Lian his own ashes, Hua Cheng has granted Xie Lian co-ownership of Paradise Mansion and he will be able to go wherever he wants at any time. Either way Mo Xiang Tong Xiu chooses, this will be an exciting result. Through all of these cues and more, Mo Xiang Tong Xiu has shown us Hua Cheng's dedication and loyalty to Xie Lian, with his words, actions, and clothing choice. His name, however, as a Demon King: Crimson Rain Sought Flower, is incredibly obvious. The white flower is a symbol he personally gave Xie Lian after he ascended the first time. In QianDeng Temple, Xie Lian even holds it up and asks if "...this is the kind of flower [he is] pursuing," to which Hua Cheng, delighted that Xie Lian finally realizes his romantic feelings, replies that he has the premonition of gods. Xie Lian had only asked about the flower, not himself. It is unknown whether Hua Cheng understood that, but either way his tone reads as teasingly sincere.

One last thing: the whole "falling" in love thing. Hua Cheng fell from the sky in order to first meet Xie Lian. He was probably chock full of adrenaline and scared to death, but once those strong arms caught him and held him away from danger he felt safer than anywhere else in the world. He probably wanted to know more about the person who had saved him. I bet he manipulated the info of who saved him out of Qi Rong when Qi Rong's five hitmen showed up to kill him. I bet just knowing the name of the person who'd saved him was what drove him to fight like a madman to avoid dying by Qi Rong's interference. That led him directly to the carriage's path again, and then to Xie Lian's arms again. He was calm when Xie Lian was holding him, but no one else. He didn't give a shit when the Head Priest predicted a future of only destruction, but heard Xie Lian insisting that he was capable of doing good. This fundamentally changed him as a person, even if Xie Lian didn't remember it later. This, I believe, is the reason why Hua Cheng left the world largely intact. Plus he didn't know where exactly Xie Lian was, so he couldn't just destroy large areas without possibly creating a most unwanted casualty.

Falling from the sky, beaten and dragged behind a cart, accused of bringing doom, watching Xie Lian stoically face angry crowds, asking the god who no one heard from anymore why he should live. Watching the flower demons torment his hero. Although many assume Hua Cheng decided to become strong enough to protect Xie Lian at this point, it could have been a resolve building up since their first interaction. Whatever the case, suffering through watching Xie Lian deal with the outbreak, face the angry mob, get heckled as he held up the Pavilions day in day out, that was the acute torment which fueled Hua Cheng's determination to become powerful. That this remains his worst fear, even after he now is at LEAST as powerful as Xie Lian in his heyday, says much about how much he loves Xie Lian.

Pursue his affections, he's the kind who loves with his entire heart. And since you wear a white robe, his color, close to your heart, perhaps he is the person nearest and dearest to yours...

'Supernatural' Good Intentions aka paving that road to hell

I’m going to do something I never thought I’d do for a review. I’m going to give you a disclaimer with this Supernatural review: If you cannot separate any actor from the character they play (the main picture above is a helpful hint), then you’re free to go. Class dismissed. No hard feelings. Seriously. In fact, I’d rather you go. Still here? Okay, then. I’m going to start with a brief rundown of an episode I skipped reviewing last month, “Devil’s Bargain.” I skipped it for a very personal reason: because unlike some fans, I don’t hate Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner. I don’t think they’re awful writers. I don’t think they’re misogynists or racists, in fact, I think the opposite. I don’t think “Taxi Driver” is that bad compared to a lot of other episodes we’ve endured. I think “Route 666” is unbelievably underrated and if possible more relevant now than it was twelve years ago. Finally, I think a lot of fandom screaming “canon fail” at them is a two-fold issue: one, we’re all very married to our head-canons and two, all the writers do it and alway have. Blaming just them is simply childish. And before you say it, no, I don’t care that they wrote the death of Charlie Bradbury. Seriously. I don’t care. The character was way past expiration, like a couple other characters that we’re still enduring. I digress. For now, a quick rundown of “Devil’s Bargain.” It was… okay. Danneel Ackles made her Supernatural debut as faith healer Sister Jo, but frankly, even before her first scene aired, we all knew she’d be revealed as an angel. Now, as someone in fandom, it’s hard to remove yourself from knowing that you’re watching Jensen Ackles’ wife onscreen, but since I’d watched Danneel on TV way before they even began dating I have a slight advantage, and there were definitely shades of her One Tree Hill character, Rachel Gatina, in Sister Jo. While, I would’ve liked to see a bit more comedy out of this role, because I think that’s where Danneel Ackles shines, the sultry selfishness of Sister Jo wasn’t unwelcome. In fact, it was refreshing to finally see an angel who wasn’t wearing a boring suit and acting like an office drone. Honestly, Supernatural, the angels and demons on your show have become so homogenous. One big blurry blob of maybe good, maybe bad, but all definitely bored, ad execs. Sister Jo and Lucifer were the actual highlights of this episode, separately and together. Their encounters were unsettling, but they were supposed to be, and the performances were there. Yeah, the dialogue was wordy, that’s Ross-Leming and Buckner for you, but a good actor can turn wordy into conversational. Danneel Ackles and Mark Pellegrino were able to do that. Was the sexual metaphor heavy handed? Oh, yeah, totally. That said, after the very literal hammers to the head in Steve Yockey’s episode “Various & Sundry Villains” we learned that it’s not a deal breaker for an episode. Misha Collins himself once said there was nothing subtle about the writing in Supernatural. You know what is a deal breaker, though? When your tertiary characters outweigh your primary leads and secondary regular. I spent every moment that Dean, Sam, and Castiel were on screen thinking, “can we get back to Lucifer and Sister Jo?” And it wasn’t the director, I can’t blame Eduardo Sanchez for the drag in momentum, because if anyone can build tension and deliver it’s the director of The Blair Witch Project. Sanchez is horror royalty, a tension king. I’m not going to blame the writing either because again, Danneel Ackles and Mark Pellegrino were engaging. I blame the show running and the editing. I know, I know, I’m not being subtle in where I’m going with this, but we’ll get back to that later. Anyway, “Devil’s Bargain” was passable. Not a top 20 episode, but not a bottom 20 one either. It existed. It’ll be mostly memorable for the fact that Danneel Ackles was in it. Her presence, whether it was because you know her from One Tree Hill, know her as Jensen’s wife, or just plain enjoyed Sister Jo, basically saved this episode from complete obscurity. What’s that you say? But what about the big reveal of Gabriel at the end? Well, if we hadn’t seen it coming, it might have been cool. Same with Bobby in the next episode. There’s no shock left because like with Ruthie Connell’s, between the cast, crew, and PR we know everything weeks in advance. Speaking of the next episode, let’s get into episode 13.14, “Good Intentions,” penned by Meredith Glynn and directed by P.J. Pesce. I’m going to get two petty things out of the way because they are the least of the problems with this episode; the camera angles were really awkward, and the use of the episode title in the dialogue during act one was, wow, hammers to the head again, anyone? I have one more issue that’s less about writing, directing, and acting, but I’m saving it for, you guessed it: later. Have you been filing away those “laters”? Hope so. What I am going to get into here is the overall writing of this episode, specifically the dialogue and characterization. First of all, can we stop asking how Castiel is all the time? I get that you are all struggling to justify the character, but no one, absolutely no one, gets asked about or talks about their feelings more than the soulless angel. It’s honestly preposterous when you think about it. We’re also going to have Castiel be the one both worried about and coddled over Lucifer being free? The dude who let Lucifer free? I know you’re fairly new, Meredith, so hey, let’s give you a break, I mean no one expects you to understand twelve years of canon. Who can? Except millions of fans who aren’t paid to do so. Let’s also discuss how you’re going to have characters that are “sometimes referred to as brothers” and then send Castiel and Dean off to fight them? Meredith, Meredith, Meredith. No ma’am. That’s just bad narrative symmetry. A rookie move, honestly. So is using “migraine” and “headache” interchangeably, but that’s a pet peeve puddle I’d don’t have the patience to play in, not when there’s an entire pond of “what even is going on here??” to paddle through. Actually, no, I’m going to address this a bit further; if I’m so removed from your storyline that I have the ability to focus your very common, yet annoying, medical inconsistency then something is very wrong. And what’s wrong is that this episode is an Everlasting Gobstopper of info dumping. It’s all exposition. No heart, no soul, no characterization. All tell and no show. This episode felt feature length and not in a good way. Actually, the only one in character is Mary. Her caring about six-month-old manchild, Jack when she can’t seem to genuinely care about her six-month-old baby turned hero of a man; Sam was very spot on. Although, I somehow don’t think you intended that bit of irony. Speaking of Mary and Jack, let’s get into a bit about the alternate world. It’s a cool idea, Andrew Dabb. In theory, it really is. I mean, apocalypse AUs have never been my personal preferred fanfic trope, but I get that it’s popular. In execution, however, if you’re going to retread the characters of Michael and Zachariah in new bodies then you need to have writers that can keep the characterization consistent with the season 4 and season 5 characters we knew. These two dudes aren’t that. Don’t get me wrong, the physical casting for Michael is superb, very nice eye candy, and hey, I’ll even allow the argument that we saw so little of Michael in SPN 1.0 that you and your writers have room to play. But Zachariah? Kurt Fuller’s performance is what brought Zachariah to life, the combination of determination, manipulation, and exhaustion all delivered with smug sarcasm. This Zachariah, he’s a generic second in command character. He could literally be anyone. You’ll notice I’ve barely mentioned Sam Winchester. Yeah. That’s because you forgot to write him and the director forgot to focus on him and yo, I’m so tired. So let’s talk about all the “laters”, shall we? I said I wasn’t going to blame director Eduardo Sanchez and honestly, I have very little blame for P.J. Pesce aside from some dubious camera angle choices. I blame the writing and the show running. Now if you’re someone who preaches Team Free Will, that door from earlier is still open, please, walk through it, because there is nothing more tedious than a scene with Dean, Sam, and Castiel or Dean and Castiel. I’m not here to debate that; it’s my opinion in my opinion piece. Not one single writer can keep the dialogue in these types of scenes flowing. It’s forever awkward, stilted, and redundant and very clearly existing because it’s required by the showrunner. Every season for the past few years has been Castiel screwing up, then storming in thinking he knows better, then screwing up again. Maybe that’s a sign the character has overstayed? Perhaps. Fact is, it’s become so boring. The only consistent thing about Castiel is his hubris followed by his pouting and moping. Another I later implied was editing. I have so many issues with the editing in this episode. Listen, horror genre is my thing. Good horror movies, bad horror movies, slasher flicks, torture porn, psychological thrillers, ghost, monsters, all of it. I love it. Often times what makes or breaks a horror movie isn’t the acting or the writing, it’s the editing. It’s the way scenes are put together. It’s the sound mixing. It’s practical effects versus reliance on CGI. This episode failed on each of these points. The thudding steps from the “giants” Gog and Magog sounded comical, not to mention the fact that we suddenly had subtitles for an ancient language. Oh, I get it, Meredith had jokes. Anyway. The other editing failures were the cut from Zachariah tossing Jack into his cell to Jack landing and several other POV switch edits that were equally as awkward and choppy. Not to mention the random moments of surprise!shaky cam. This episode felt cobbled together out of several other things. Not other episodes, actual different projects. As for the CGI, the lighting in the AU world was very near animated in appearance. The reveal of Zachariah pretending to be Castiel felt like funhouse horror editing, which can work… if you’re watching The Houses October Built. Not to mention the beheading of the giant was pretty bad, especially for a show that has had amazing beheadings in the past. And Jack turning the angels into missiles was just… I don’t even have words. Again, I come from a horror background, so these things matter a lot. But finally, my last, and biggest gripe is this: what even are we doing? Season 13, what is your thesis statement? We are fourteen episodes into this season, and there’s no story. Not really. We spent the first half setting up a spin-off that may or may not happen, and now we’re just throwing spaghetti at a wall. Michael, Mary, Jack, Lucifer, Asmodeus, Bobby, the AU world, the real world. It’s all a hodgepodge. The only thing I know for certain is what this season isn’t about. Sam and Dean Winchester.
