Just had a thought about abilities in BSD.

Under a read more because I accidentally made a wall of text talking about this-

What if your control over your ability depends on how much you accept it as a part of you? The idea that every single ability has a consciousness, one that, no matter what, is made to protect or assist its user in some way. If you don't accept and come to terms with having a second 'you' inside you, then your ability will not work with you, simply because you are not willing to work with it when all it's trying to do is help you.

Because of this, it won't always do what you want it too at first, it won't always work, and it'll do what it thinks is best, not caring about what the user will think about it. You have to understand it was there to help you, learn that your ability is a part of you, even the parts that hurt others, the parts that hurt you, because in the end, all its doing is to fulfill the most human wish.

Survive. Live.

It's not always liking your ability, it's knowing that the ability is trying to protect you, to let you live and survive in grow no matter the cost. The pain it's caused will always be there, sometimes it will come back as a memory, and that pain comes flooding back. It's trying, and so are you. Yes, it will hurt sometimes, sometimes you'll wish you never had it, that you died instead of obtaining it, because that would prevent the pain it's caused. It's not learning to love your ability, it's learning that it embodies the part of you that wanted to survive. It's not entirely you, but a part of you. The more you know that, the easier it is to deal with and use to your advantage.

doesn't mind your personality, although at first he teases you mercilessly until he realizes it isn't just an act.

as someone that has also gone through trauma, he would gradually soften up to your personality and reassure you of your worth.

dazai is a very impatient man though, so expect his method of choice to be exposure therapy...like extreme exposure therapy...like bro might slap some sense into you like atsushi & akutagawa ( ó × ò)

when you start over-apologizing, he'll put a finger to your lips and stroke your face and hair to calm you down (ღˇᴗˇ)｡o

expect lots of subtle displays of affection like hand kisses, kissing away tears, and general affectionate flirting.

your demeanor confuses atsushi at first, to the point where he cries after the first time he meets you :,(

you're going to get a sentimental, heartfelt speech about how you deserve to live, and how you aren't a burden to anyone.

poor atsu cries over you--you guys probably have daily cry + cuddle sessions.

will do random things to cheer you up and give you many words of affirmation.

buys you a tiger plushie sprayed with his cologne to cuddle with when he isn't with you for comfort ♡

i'd like to think that through helping you, atsushi also helps address his own self-esteem issues ^w^

hates you at first and sees you as a cowardly weakling.

it isn't until one day he randomly compliments or helps you and catches your shy/flustered expression that he begins to feel some sympathy.

will gradually visit you more until you stop flinching whenever he approaches you. he can tell you're intimidated by him because of his personality and notorious reputation.

it's definitely hard for akutagawa to be soft with you, since he's a rough person, but he tries his best to be gentle with you.

shows his care through actions more than words (sharing food with you, doing constant check-ins, guiding your back when walking with you, etc.)

promises threatens to kill those who have harmed and harassed you in the past.

becomes overprotective over you, getting mad when anyone--even jokingly--teases you.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ chuuya nakahara

tough love~!!!

expect a lot of "huh, what the hell are you talking about?" anytime you apologize for something small or suggest some self-sabotage

since you aren't used to affection and often try to reject gifts, thinking you aren't worth giving them to, chuuya will 'lovebomb' you with gifts until you get used to them as the norm and accept them willingly.

although he may seem short-tempered and easily irritated, he'll always make time to sit down with you and listen to your rants/past stories and engage in deep conversations.

holds your hands and reminds you of how strong and talented you are--will keep drilling it into your head until it sticks.

carries tissues in his suit for when you cry.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ edgar allen poe

this man may be your twin...honestly he's a bit of a mess himself, so he doesn't know how to help you.

i think poe would be relieved to find someone similar to him--also very shy and awkward/bad at socializing.

if you started apologizing when there was a pause in conversation, he would probably apologize back, and you two would go back and forth until karl bites him (꒪▿꒪)

since you both mainly only find confidence in your talents/skills, he would get to know your strengths as much as possible and encourage you to do your best!

will also share his book plots with you, taking you with him into the books and getting your feedback, never missing the chance to show you something beautiful he secretly wrote just for you

overall, poe would make you feel less alone and isolated, helping you gain confidence overtime!

⊹ ࣪ ˖ jouno saigiku

since you're already so fragile and frantic, jouno wouldn't find any pleasure in torturing or messing with you

ends up helping you under the pretense of "calming down your raging heartbeat and nerves that are too loud"; in reality, he notices how you're always on edge and just wants you to experience some peace and quiet.

jouno's sensitive to others' emotions, so i think if you were having a panic attack or extreme anxiety, he'd immediately hug + hold you until you calmed down again (ㅅ´ ˘ `)

like the rest, he'd offer you words of affirmation and hold your hand in public/around other people.

will stick around you to ward off anyone who tries to bully you or exploit your personality; blushes uncontrollably if you thank him for his simple acts ♡

Dazai Osamu - an amazing character with a terrible mis-characterization

(all based on anime)

I have a bone to pick with so many people in this fandom.

Dazai Osamu is one of the most interesting characters I have ever seen in anime. And just like any other great character, he couldn’t dodge the way his fans are treating his character.

Dazai Osamu is based on the real author Dazai Osamu who was born back in 1908, meaning this author (his views, opinions, etc.) are considered to be problematic. Just like the character Dazai. Because he is problematic.

Let’s start with something that so many people forget (or just bluntly ignore): The abused became an abuser. Dazai was an abuser - so many people tend to forget that he, in fact, abused Akutagawa. Almost all the flashbacks of Dazai and Akutagawa we see, Dazai is beating Akutagawa up. And for anyone saying oh, well, it’s the Mafia!!, fuck you. Dazai was abusive, end of story. Yes, he became a good mentor to Atsushi, but he still fucked up a perfectly good child. And later, Akutagawa became an abuser, too (but that’s a different topic). Dazai wasn’t a quirky, strong child. He was fucked up - and he still is. Dazai knew only violence, and bloodshed.

And so many people use this as an excuse for all the horrible things he has done. Yes, Dazai was abused by Mori, but it is not an excuse to manipulate, gaslight and abuse others. It is an explanation. There is a big difference between those two. Dazai continued the abuse cycle.

I would like to dive a little bit into his suicidal tendencies - because many people will say oh i am so quirky, i kin Dazai because i want to off myself, hehe. You’re not seeing the bigger picture! He wants to kill himself, but he knows that he can’t. Because if he killed himself, he would lose. Dazai would lose the internal fight with himself. Dazai could easily kill himself - even without any pain, and yet he doesn’t. That’s the thing.

To continue, we have to deal with yet another hard pill to swallow - Dazai has sociopathic tendencies (I do not want to diagnose him with an antisocial personality disorder, that’s why I am talking only about tendencies). Dazai, throughout his Mafia days, showed no regard for right or wrong (example, shooting people without a reason) and ignored the feelings of others (Chuuya joining the Mafia against his own will is a great example - Dazai didn’t care how Chuuya felt about losing everything and joining the organization he despised). Yet another symptom is rather known (yet, people think it is quirky) - Dazai is a notorious liar. He mainly lies to manipulate others to gain something for himself. Another great example of sociopathic tendencies is failing at fulfilling work responsibilities. I feel like this is a well-known thing - Kunikida would always say that Dazai never does his work and all of it falls on Kunikida.

I would love to talk a bit more about Dazai showing no regard for right or wrong, because I know people will try to call me out on this. But he joined ADA! He is actually a good person! You absolute fool, the only reason Dazai did it, is because Oda asked him to. Oda asked him to join the side that does good and helps others. Because Oda, unlike Dazai, was actually a good person. Dazai couldn't care less - he wanted to fulfill his friend’s dying wish.

Dazai doesn’t care about good or bad - but he did care about Oda.

Another thing people are misunderstanding are Dazai’s trust issues. Yes, Dazai has trouble trusting others, but it is not because Ango betrayed the Port Mafia like many people believe - no, that is untrue. If you had paid any attention (but you clearly had not), you would’ve noticed that Dazai never trusted Ango. The only person Dazai ever trusted was Oda (I am a Soukoku stan myself, do NOT kill me over this, I will talk about this in a different essay). Dazai doubted Ango’s loyalty to the Port Mafia from the beginning, because Dazai’s trust issues started way before that. Dazai has difficulty trusting others, and that is why he cannot form normal, healthy relationships.

Yes, it seems like people are forgetting this, too. Dazai is unable to form healthy relationships with those around him. When it came to Akutagawa, Dazai was an abuser. His relationship with Chuuya is too complicated to talk about in this essay, but it is safe to say it’s not the healthiest relationship in anime. And for anyone saying: but you said that Dazai became a good mentor for Atsushi!!, shut up. Dazai still takes advantage of Atsushi. Same with Kunikida. Dazai is unable to have healthy relationships - he was abused, neglected, you name it. (And before anyone says that I think that abused people are horrible, it is not true. But if you continue the abuse cycle, that is a very different story.)

Does this mean you can’t pity him for it? Absolutely not. Because it is sad - all the things Dazai went through were tough and shaped him into who he is today. But that person is fucked up. That person is flawed and did horrible things in the past (and present). Because just because you switch sides, it doesn’t automatically make you a good person.

Is Dazai doing good things? Yes. Is he a good person? Fuck no.

You can pity him. You can hate Mori and blame him for everything. But it is still not an excuse.

The main point is that Dazai is an amazing character. He doesn’t hide behind this wall created by good deeds. He doesn’t try to convince others he is a good person. He is a fucked up, flawed, manipulative man who had a horrible past. And that’s what makes him such a great character. Not the mischaracterization, but the canon version of Dazai.
