The Parallel Between the South Park Episode’s Kenny Dies and the Book of Mormon Musical’s Song ‘Turn it Off’ - TW: grief and death

tw for death and the loss of loved ones (and also kinda for religious trauma? idk, my apologies. this got much darker than I intended lmfao)

As a kid who both grew up Mormon who served a mission AND as a lover of South Park… I find the BoM musical so fascinating. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to see the play (though I have plans to one day), but am more than familiar with the soundtrack! Trust that I’ve got it all memorized.

I love all the SP songs M&T come up with, so obviously the BoM soundtrack is no exception. If you’re a SP fan who hasn’t looked into it, I highly recommend it - it’s VERY reminiscent of SP humor with clearly lots of thought and input from M&T, and the songs they have on the SP show. And vice versa, if you’re a BOM musical lover who doesn’t know much about South Park - I can’t recommend enough you check out the show. It has the same level of satire and an almost endless amount of satirical songs.

From what I’ve heard of the BoM soundtrack, it clearly has Matt and Trey written ALL OVER it lol. It’s clear they have close ties to the Mormon community, which makes sense given their location in Colorado growing up. And one of my favorite songs (along with Spooky Mormon Hell Dream of COURSE lol) is ‘Turn it Off’.

Imo, the two (the SP episode and BoM song) clearly have an intentional parallel, particularly when it comes to religious manipulation for what is the ‘correct’ way to grieve the loss of a loved one ‘should be’.

In ‘Kenny Dies’, you have Kenny actually dying for real and for good. Stan in the episode has a very hard time with it in juxtaposition to his friend Kyle, who has a more healthy psychological outlook of grieving and death even as just a kid. This isn’t to say there’s a more objectively good outlook to grieving or that Kyle had an easier time - anyone who has lost a close one too soon knows that there’s genuinely no fair and good way to grieve the loss of a close one. Which is exactly what this episode is trying to portray - that while Kyle’s more healthy way of letting loose his emotional grievances initially can seem like the more emotionally secure way to deal with things and probably is, that doesn’t mean that life makes it possible to do so.

Stan gets very avoidant in this episode, just as he does in many others. He is confused as to how a seemingly all-knowing and caring God would take away someone he loves so much and views as so wholesome and perfect. And his feelings are more than fair and relatable here. This causes Stan to avoid one of his best friends who really wants and needs him at the time as poor Kenny really needs him there at his side as one of his closest and most treasured friends, and it’s not fair to him that Stan avoids him. This hurts SO BAD and is one of the extremely rare times a show makes me tear up, because I think a lot of us who have lost someone so amazing and close can really relate to this feeling of not knowing how to be there when you’re so hurting indescribably bad yourself to the point you feel like you genuinely don’t know how to be there for your loved ones because you’re too fucked up.

In the SP episode, you have Kenny’s literal last words be, “Where is Stan?”

In the Book of Mormon Musical ‘Turn it Off’ song, you have the Elder Thomas’ sister with cancer’s last words be, ‘Where is my brother?” (him singing about himself being said-brother. But his reminiscing in this song VERY MUCH has to deal with Stan’s own feelings in ‘Kenny Dies’.) These two lines can’t be coincidence and show something personal in Trey and Matt’s personal life experiences.

I get that obviously M&T try to bring dark humor to both these parallels, but for me, while I can still find it funny - I get an overwhelming sense that it’s one of the rare times they are also trying to actually be deep here. In the ‘Kenny Dies’ episode, you have that conversation between Stan and Chef where Stan asks, “Why would God let Kenny die, Chef? Why? Kenny’s my… f-friend. Why can’t God take someone else’s f-friend?”

And this is a more than fair and realistic question for Stan to ask at 8 years old. Jesus, in my early 20’s, I’ve asked the same fucking question and it’s one of the fucking reasons I left the Mormon church in the first place. Chef responds by saying, “Stan… sometimes God takes those closest to us, because it makes him feel better about himself. He is a very vengeful God, Stan. He's all pissed off about something we did thousands of years ago. He just can't get over it, so he doesn't care who he takes. Children, puppies, it don't matter to him, so long as it makes us sad. Do you understand?”

This is clearly written by Trey who had lost someone he loved so very much pretty recently. And it fucking hurts every time to hear that line.

Stan responds, “But then, why does God give us anything to start with?”

To which Chef says, “Well, look at it this way: if you want to make a baby cry, first you give it a lollipop. Then you take it away. If you never give it a lollipop to begin with, then it would have nothin' to cry about. That's like God, who gives us life and love and help just so that he can tear it all away and make us cry, so he can drink the sweet milk of our tears. You see, it's our tears, Stan, that give God his great power.”

I think this is the turning point at which Stan becomes a bit more nihilistic and nonchalant about life. But it also doesn’t make that moment where he actually makes the extremely difficult effort to show up for Kenny even more devastating to learn that Kenny had already passed by that point.

Anyways, I honestly don’t know the point I was trying to make here lmfao. Because I don’t think there ever is a point to make about when you lose someone who should have never been lost, other than how you feel is fucking valid— and anyone who says otherwise likely has never had the displeasure of losing someone who a just God would never take in the first place.

And for what it’s worth… if there’s anything I’ve learned from losing loved ones far too fucking prematurely, whether that comes to the stupid fucking healthcare system not taking 21-year-olds seriously when you say they're having a stroke so they literally fucking die because it’s not taken seriously in time (sadly a true and personal story of my brother. I may make occasional dark jokes about this because I only know how to cope w dark jokes so if I ever do please laugh so I don’t cry lmfao) or your best friend killing themselves at age 20 (also sadly a real story), or anywhere in-between… just know that how you process that grief is FAIR and real and there’s no actual REAL moral way of grieving, and any one who says otherwise is SO MORALLY UP THEIR ASSES (not talking about Kyle here btw; I know Kyle suffers just as much in this episode. talking about people in real life who try to pressure to to get over grief a particular way.) You don’t have to be a ‘healthy’ griever like Kyle. It’s okay to be a selfish and angry and non-understanding one like Stan or Chef or Elder Thomas (and by extension, Trey) in The Book of Mormon with his sister.

And if something like “Where was Stan?” or “Where is my brother?” haunts you? Just know that you’re not alone.

Either way- please hug your loved ones closely for me today, even if you’re not much of a hugger like I’m not. I’m really struggling with the loss of a few close ones today (probably in an unhealthy way but can now understand that’s okay though I so wish I’d hugged those folks more), and I hope none of you take your loved ones for granted 💔

P.S. You know what makes this funnier? The Mormon church taught me to "turn off" my bisexual thoughts (word for word lmao; m&t clearly did their research with terminology lmao), and then life taught me you can't actually “turn off” grief or your own sexual attractions lmao. Plot twist: both those lessons of just ‘turning it off’ were bullshit! Turns out feelings are like Kenny – they keep coming back no matter how many times you try to kill them. And I love Kenny and am glad he always comes back… so maybe it’s time to accept that hard feelings can also be healthy to just feel.

Here's to Stan's awkward avoidance, to Kyle's ‘healthier’ grieving (fucking show-off (said lovingly)- I love kyle and look up to him sm tbh), to Chef's cynical theology he teaches to Stan , and to every single one of us who's ever been haunted by a "where were you?"

He is so obsessed with your hips. Loves just staring at you when you wear something tight fitting, he just can’t take his eyes off you. He panicked when you told him that his staring made it seem like he was judging you. He literally felt a pain in his chest when you thought he was judging you. Reassures you all the time that he loves your hips by hugging you from behind and rubbing his calloused hands over them.

⭑ scars/stretch marks - kenny mccormick

He also has lots of scars and even a couple stretches marks and he doesn’t see anything wrong with them. He loves tracing and caressing the stretch marks you have (especially if you have some on your chest), and giving all the cuts and scrapes you have kisses. Kenny isn’t a man of many words so he likes physically showing how much he loves all aspects of you.

I know, i know this one sounds cliche BUT hear me out. He’s never viewed your weight as a bad thing if anything he prefers you to be chubby. he likes having someone he can be a foodie with. like most things, he would never admit how much he loves your plush figure but he will physically tell you by laying his head down on your thighs and kneading the softness of your tummy and thighs when you cuddle.

But since you're a ghost that death that occurred confirms it was you after all. He feels guilty that he never spoken to you, not even once before you died.

You both started to have a lot of conversations with each other after your first meeting. Stan obviously snuck out during lunch or free time to go talk to you behind the school.

Stan always talked about you to Kyle though. Kyle thought he had a screw loose since Kyle can't even see you.

You like to tease Stan with your powers and scare him a lot. I'd like to think Stan always puffs his cheeks whenever he's angry and you find that cute :)

She will wear anything you had left behind before you died (hats, scarfs, etc.)

When she was cleaning out her locker for her next class. She saw a bunch of students running away from the janitor's closet, screaming about how the closet is haunted or something.

Wendy brushed it off as them being weird until Bebe told her that she saw a ghost in the closet. Wendy signed and went to check it out for herself since she trusts Bebe.

She opened the closet door and saw nothing inside.

She was about to go and confront Bebe for lying to her until she saw a ghostly figure that looked exactly like her.

She screamed until you shifted back into your normal self and reassured her that it was just only you.

Begging for you to talk about OJV Stans and Marj’s friendship. Mari coming out to Stan first and whenever she is having a meltdown him always zooming to find Kenny or Kyle is so wholesome. One of the things about OJV Stan is that he IS the Dad Friend. By which I mean he’s extremely protective but also unequipped for actual crises, and is prone to inadvertently indulging in shenanigans. The way this extends to Marj? Lemme get goin.

So when she came out to him, bro was CONFUSED like “uhhhh why am I the first person you’re talking about this with? Why not, I dunno, Kenny or something” like Stan fully isnt the person to go to for advice but he IS the person to confide in (plus he gives really good hugs if u need them) and he actually cried when her answer was “I just felt like I could trust you is all” this sweet boy, if he doesn’t know what to do in a situation he’s GONNA find someone who will, so he went “what about talking to Kyle? He might know more about this than me?” And she read him for absolute filth lmao all “well speakin of, that’s why I came to you. You have your own little secret that you’ve been scared to bring up, dontcha” AGDGJKLH

Nah but seriously, their friendship is so wholesome, she frequently scolds Stan for indulging Kenny’s recklessness, he’s out here like “dude Marj that’s a pyramid scheme don’t fuck with that shit” (she winds up running it lmfao) and may not always be the most observant person, but he knows his friends and ALWAYS recognizes the signs of Marj starting to shut down, and she knows that. She says the word and Stan is finding her someone with the emotional tools to help. I also like to think that Stan COULD be one of those people. OrangeJuiceVerse Stan Marsh is actually very emotionally intelligent, but he isn’t confident enough in that to think he has any room to help others. It’s the same reason that later down the line he wrestles with taking on a sponsee.

A more fun note: in that first year of college, the trio of Marj Stan and Cartman are THE musical theatre gang. I’m talking they are DESTROYING karaoke. I don’t know why I have this headcanon but I do and I love it. About it ☆ I wrote the first version of Find you years ago, it seems that before 2010, so yeah, it was horribly cringy to re-read, but also inspiring, so I decided to make it better, keeping the name and some stuff I like about the old version, but changing most of it and continuing where I left it. “Hugin and Munin fly every day

across the Gaping Ground.

I worry that Hugin may not return,

The colors of the sunset get mixed in the tears I can’t contain. He pulls me into a hug and I hold him close. I don't know how much time passes, I didn’t know I had so many tears for him. 

Liane’s voice breaks the moment.

“Sweetie, we should go.”

“Come on, Ken,” says Stan, placing a hand on my shoulder. I see Eric’s face, tears are falling, but he has a calm expression, then he lets out a devilish smile, grabs my hand and we run out of there.

“Let’s go to Stark's Pond!” We get there between laughs and sobs. “Stop crying, asshole, you are making me cry.”

“No, you are making me cry, Kenny!” He looks at me with clear eyes; we are so close to the pond I can see the dancing water reflected on them. I wrap him into an embrace. Why do you have to be soft?

“Don’t go.” He hugs me back and I enjoy his warmth.

“And what do I do then, live in your house? You are poor!” The laughs mitigate the tears. “For now I have to go, but I want to come back,” He holds me by the arms, with an intense gaze he promises: “I’ll find you again, ok?”

I don’t know what to reply, it is Cartman the one talking, but he seems serious about it, so I just nod. We hang out there for a while, thinking of ways to keep in touch and making plans that might never come true. After a while, a car honks at us; it is Liane. He shoots a glance of disgust at her, but his expression shifts when he turns and smiles at me.

“See you, Kenny,” Eric says sweetly, then he is gone.

☆ 4 years later ☆

Since Cartman moved out it has only been the three of us, we stick together somehow. I find myself thinking about Eric in the bad times, but mostly in the good times; that’s when I really wish he was here.

I get close to the bus stop and see my friends in the distance.

“Hi, guys!”

“Hey, Kenny!”

“I thought you weren't coming,” Stan says, I shrug. 

“I don't feel like staying in the house all day long.” 

“But you are sick,” Kyle insists.

“I don't give a fuck,” I reply, smiling. He frowns. 

“Fine!… What did Cartman say?” 

“He asked if you finally got sucked by your own jewfro.” Stan chuckles and Kyle looks up at his hair busting out from a hat that he doesn't dig like the one from our childhood.

“That fucker,” He looks pissed, but then he grins. “How’s he doing?” The bus arrives and we keep talking as we step in, then I take the window's side. Eric moved to New York when we were fourteen, 4 years ago. We are far away, but it seems he has changed for good. Maybe I'm really sick if I think someone like Cartman has changed.

It is our last year of school; the same people and very unusual situations. It is South Park after all. When I was little I thought alien abductions, cosmic horrors and endless deaths were something that just happened. Sometimes I wonder why do I stay?... Karen, that’s the easy answer, but this place also feels right for me; this town where all the weirdness unfolds and I’m just part of the unexplained. 

I also have this strong hunch, like I’m waiting for something that will happen soon.

So, to start off, Stan would definitely feel safer around you, he might even open up to you. But at first he’s scared of you a bit😰

But once he decides to approach you, and you seemed quite nice! Although you still intimidated him a bit.

Honestly, if you found out about his alcohol addiction, you would give him a whole lecture about it. He wouldn’t specifically end the addiction but he will try to stop for the sake of you.

Now, when he feels down, he will most likely go to you first. And only you at this point. You might be a bit aggressive, but he knows you mean well.

One night, while he was feeling down about some things Shelley said about him, he decided to text you.

Hey, I’m not feeling very good and I need someone to talk to rn.

He’d text, and you’d answer back.

Come over.

And he would! He’d come over, and you’d be standing there, waiting for him.

“What happened.” You’d ask. “Shelley..” he’d say in a slightly sullen tone. And you’d go up to him and hug him, “shh.. it’ll be fine.. I promise you.” You brought him to the couch, where he would then just look at you and start crying, burying his head in your shoulder. You of course, reassured him so well. You would then notice a few bruises on his hand and his face. “Stan.. are these from Shelley too?” And he would nod. That alone made you pissed off so badly, but you didn’t show it. You sat him down on the couch and pulled out a first aid kit, then mending his wounds slowly. He would wince from time to time, but until you were done, you weren’t stopping. Finally when you were done, you let go and gave him a kiss on the cheek, slightly making his face heating up.

“Are you guys kissing!?” Your younger brother would ask and you faced him, your own face heating up as well.

Introducing Stan to your younger brother wasn’t difficult, your brother was quite enthusiastic. He was very close to you, and he knew whoever you chose was going to be good as well! So, once they met, your brother instantly hugged him, bringing Stan joy. “I think he likes me!” He would whisper to you, and you’d chuckle. “Now we gotta babysit him for two days cause mom and dad are gone.” You laughed, and Stan would just pat your brother’s head. “Oh my god! Can I show you my Xbox collection?!” Your brother was a bit too enthusiastic now. But you didn’t mind, and neither did Stan, it just brought him more joy in fact. And since that day forward, every time Stan would come over, they’d play at least once or twice together.

Little brother=3rd wheeler? Nah.

Overall, Stan would be ecstatic to be with you. He is glad you are in his life, to comfort him, and to care for him. He has a bit of difficulty when it comes to relationships (due to Wendy), but you shower him with affection. He didn’t even know you could do that!

WARNINGS: Transphobia Deadnaming Fighting Misgendering

“Well, I’m sorry that I’m just worried about my son getting hurt!” Sheila retaliates. “Ma, you KNOW Stan. He would never hurt me! You just want me to seem perfect and Stan to be the bad guy!” Kyle says. Sheila opens her mouth to say something but Kyle doesn’t let her get it out. He stands up from his seat at the dining table and stomps up the stairs to his bedroom.

When Kyle enters his room, he shuts the door, locks it, and lays down onto his bed. He looks at his phone and sees he got a text from Stan. “Came out to my mom as bi.” Kyle smiles and texts back. “Thats amazing! I’m guessing it went well?” Stan replies a minute later. “Yeah, she’s really supportive. It was still scary though. Was coming out to your parents as trans scary?” “Well, even when I was little I never felt like a girl. I woud cry when my parents put dresses on me LMAO. So, they weren’t too surprised when I came out at 8, then everything kinda went from there.” Kyle texts Stan, but then hears a knock on his door.

Kyle puts his phone down, but doesn’t answer the door right away. “Kyle?” Sheila’s voice says, small and calm. “Open the door, please.” He groans and unlocks the door and then walks back into his bed. She enters his room and walks to where he’s lying. “Bubbie, I’m sorry. You know how I get. I’m just worried about you.” Kyle nods as his mom pushes the hair on his forehead back. “Stan isn’t just your boyfriend. He’s also your best friend. I should know that he wouldn’t hurt you and I’m sorry.” Kyle sits up from where he is in bed, and hugs her. “It’s okay. I’m sorry I yelled at you.” Kyle says. Sheila places a kiss on his forehead before saying, “I’ll save your dinner plate for later.” And walks out of his bedroom.

Kyle goes back on his phone and messages Stan for a bit, and then goes into the bathroom to take a shower. He avoids looking at himself in the mirror at all costs, showers, and then puts his clean clothes on. He does his hair, washes his face, and then finally goes to bed.

Even though it’s only 8:45, Kyle hides under his covers, forcing himself to sleep. He was extremely tired, so he didn’t need to force it much.

The next day, Kyle wakes up to his horrible alarm again. He wishes Cartman had atleast outed him on a Friday instead of a Monday. Whatever, he had yesterday off so today is already half way through the week. Kyle yawns and gets out of his bed,

He gets ready for school as usual, and exits his house. “Hey.” Someone says as he walks out his door. He looks up and sees his boyfriend, Stan Marsh. “Hey Stan.” Kyle says, as him and Stan start to walk to the bus stop together. They don’t talk much, but they don’t need to. They’re basically one step away from reading eachother’s minds.

They arrive at the bus stop, and (thankfully) Cartman isn’t there, just Kenny. “Cartman must be too scared to show up.” Stan remarks as the three of them wait for the bus. Kyle and Kenny laugh. “He got his mommy to drive him to school.” Kenny says. “No, Dude. His mom definitely hates him now, too. He’s probably walking to school.” Kyle says matter of factly, but still with fun in his tone. “The little sh*t deserves it.” Stan says, looking at Kyle.

Suddenly the bus shows up, and the three of them climb into it. Kyle and Stan sit next to each other, and Kenny sits next to Butters. “Hiya fellas! Great to see you back, Kyle! Hope ya doing alright.” Kyle smiles. “I am, thank you Butters.” Butters really is a sweet kid, just sometimes he talks for what seems like hours on end.

The bus eventually arrives at their school, and they all go inside. “You ready to go back?” Stan asks Kyle. Kyle holds onto his hand tightly, and nods. Kyle, Stan, Kenny, and Butters enter the school.

They all walk to their lockers, preparing for the school day. “I’m going to head to the bathroom before class.” Kyle says as Stan nods, continuing to put things in his locker. Kyle walks through the hallways to the bathroom, looking down at the ground. He really doesn’t want to make eye contact with anyone. When he arrives at the bathroom door, he sees Cartman leaning on the open door on his phone.

Kyle eyerolls and walks past him, but Cartman quickly stands in front of him, blocking the entrance. “Dude, what the f*ck? Let me through.” Kyle says, anger rising. “No girls are allowed in the boys bathroom. Kylie, you should know this.” Kyle knows people heard, and are starting to watch. His deadname rings in his ears. “There’s no f*cking way I’m using the girls bathroom. I’m obviously a boy.” Kyle’s voice raises, as he tries to shimmy his way past Cartman. Stan and Kenny hear commotion around the boy’s bathroom, and go there to see what was going on. The scene unfolds in front of them. A few seconds later, Kyle stops trying to get around Cartman, and stares at him dead in the eyes.

“What do you mean ‘obviously a boy’? You have long-ish hair, long eyelashes, a girly face, and- most importantly- a GIRL BODY. You’re a F*CKING GIRL, KYLIE!” Thump.

The sound of Kyle’s fist hitting Cartman’s face. The crowd around them errupts into gasps. Cartman holds the part of his face that was hit, now red. “Goddammit, you f*cking tr*nny.” He punches Kyle with his other arm in his chest. Kyle stumbles back a bit, but quickly hits Cartman right on his temple. “F*ck. I am not gonna get beat up by some stupid girl.”Cartman says under his breath, punching Kyle in the gut, and then his face. Kyle wraps his arms around his stomach, sucking in sharp breaths through his teeth. His ribs hurt so, so bad.

Kyle goes to punch Cartman again, but feels his arms almost being locked. He just now notices Stan and Kenny holding his arms back, and Craig and Tolkien holding Cartman’s arms back. “No, please… he deserves it..” Kyle says, his voice shaking, his breaths sharp and weak. “I know, Kyle, I know.” Kenny says in Kyle’s ear as he holds him back, and they drag him away.

My pfp is of Stan Marsh, drunk, hugging his best friend Kyle after his depression started rising and he started to see the world as shit, and all his friends left him cuz they couldn't manage being around him anymore - and after this, Kyle still leaves him and his life never takes a turn for the better.

My header is of Lapis Lazuli, getting her wings back on - since her gems been healed by Steven's healing spit. This is when she supposedly gets freed and is free to take off back to her homeworld after thousands of years of being trapped in a mirror, and at first we think her life's really turning out for the better. But it fucking doesn't cuz not long after she gets in a lowkey toxic relationship with another gem in a fusion not made of love and has to be trapped in the ocean for some time

My title is a quote from an earlier Steven universe episode where another character blames Stevens mom for the mess they're in, Steven gets angry and tears appear in his eyes as he yells out "WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT MY MOM? I DIDNT EVEN GET TO KNOW MY MOM! WHAT I DO know is that she saw the beauty in everything! Even in things like this, and even in jerks like you!" it's largely a tragic reality. His relationship with Rose is ... Really really complicated. And despite not having known her he was always subjected to others amazing views and feelings about her - he saw her as something perfect, someone to look up to, at times something he should be, someone he could never be, someone others expect him to be, someone better than him, and he even feels as if others blame him for her not being there - and probably that it'd be better if she was there instead of him. However later he learns his mom did bad things. I haven't gotten that far though, only heard the line "I know my mom did bad things" while my lil brother was watching in the other room, (and he's way too ahead of me) but it seems interesting, like his view of her was probably completely shattered... Cause everyone loved her so much, everyone wanted her to be there...... Whatevs

One Chapter Two

Stan was used to being pushed to the back, he did his best to never take it to heart, but sometimes, sometimes it really hurt.

Like now.

Watching his two best friends drive away from their shit little home town.

He tried to rationalize and push the pain away, but he knew it wasn’t that easy. It hadn’t been easy to watch people drive away, especially since the last time he did was when Shelly left for college. It was supposed to be a quick drop off, Shelly and Sharon were going together so they could have some girl time. 

“Bonding before my little girl leaves me for good.”

Stan didn’t think anything of it, he hugged his mom, got a kiss on the head and had a brief stare off with his sister before she pulled him into a hug, and really that should’ve tipped him off. Shelly and him didn’t have a huggy relationship, more of a ‘I’ll set you on fire for fun, but if someone else does their dead.’ relationship. So to hug him was out of the question, but he just chalked it up to a rare moment of sibling love. 

Randy of course ruined the whole goodbye, he was not only half drunk but also extremely high. Instead of a touching father and daughter goodbye he received a kick to the balls when he told her to promote the family weed farm at every party. Stan just signed sadly before telling them to drive safely, waving them off before helping Randy into the house after the van disappeared.

He wasn’t worried until five days passed and he still hadn’t heard from his mom or sister. He called them each multiple times and even went to his dad panicking as Sharon rarely left him without answering the phone. Randy just waved him off mumbling that they were probably just partying it up. It took a couple more nights until Stan broke down and called the Purdue University’s Police departments non-emergency line. Apologizing profusely while explaining that his sister was set to start there that week but he hadn’t heard from her or their mom for over a week since they left.

The cop was very understanding and told Stan that Shelly Marsh had arrived safe. She promised they’d reach out to his sister and have her contact him. Stan thanked her profusely trying to hold back tears knowing his sister was safe. It was three days later when Shelly finally called him. Stan was mad, and wanted to scream at her but he just choked back a sob telling her how worried he’d been. Of everything he was expecting to hear it wasn't his sister sobbing softly.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry Stan. Mom isn’t coming back to South Park, she is sending Randy the divorce papers soon.”

“What about me?”

Shelly’s silence was deafening and soon Stan was crying at the realization his mom was abandoning him with Randy.

“No. No please no don’t please don’t leave me here. Shelly I-please.”

He begged sobbing into the phone as his sister started crying with him. It took a few minutes before they both were silent just sitting and listening to the other try and catch their breath.

“Why?”

“I don’t know, she wouldn’t tell me. She has a house here already, told me she’d stay here until I graduated. After a while she told me to stop asking about you.”

“I’m going to call her, and I won't stop till she answers that damn phone and tells me why.”

“Okay.”

“Keep in contact with me?”

“As if you could ever actually escape me you little turd.”

“Bye Shelly.”

“Bye Stan.”

Stan called and called Sharon until she finally answered, and he didn’t even know what to say. What do you say to your mother, that just abandoned you with your trashcan of a father.

“Stanley, this needs to stop. Stop calling me.” Sharon said the usual warmth and love that her voice held dampened. Stan huffed holding back tears and a few curse words.

“Stop calling? How about you call me and tell me you’re safe? How about you call me and tell me "’hey son sorry but I’m never coming back!’ What the hell is going on mom?”

“I think it's obvious Stanley.” Stan couldn’t hold back the sob anymore as he broke down crying.

“Don’t leave me, please don’t leave me mom I need you.” Sharon sighed on the other end of the phone, tired and disappointed causing Stan to cry more.

“Honestly Stanley, you’re too much like your father. I need to think about me, my mental health. I can't stop myself from leaving when you’re turning out to be just like your father.” Stan felt like everything froze when she uttered those words.

‘Too much like your father.’

Stuck on repeat as he tried to find the words to tell his mom that she was wrong and he was nothing like Randy.

“M-mom please..”

“No Stanley, this is it. I’m done and I’m never coming back to South Park, I left with the only kid that took after me. I’ve already signed away all my parental rights for you to your father. Goodbye Stanley.”

The line went silent and Stan was frozen, tears falling slowly and with shaking hands he quickly redialed her number only to be met with an automated message.

“The caller you are trying to reach is unavailable or has a voicemail box that is not set up, please try again later.”

Stan tried calling Sharon four more times before he gave up and just sat on his bed breaking down completely. Body wracked with sobs he couldn’t stop and he begged to wake up from this new nightmare of his. After a while Randy stood in the doorway drinking a bear and staring out the window.

“So you finally found out?”

Randy offered no words of encouragement as his son was having a breakdown; he just stood there drinking his beer and staring out the window. Stan called down after a few minutes, before he calmly stood up and grabbed his charger, shoving it in his jeans pocket. Randy’s attention finally shifted to his son who walked towards him and out the door down the stairs.

“Finally stopped crying over that bitch? Good, shouldn’t waste your time over someone that can’t see that everything I’ve done has been to better this family. Besides, we don't need her and she obviously doesn’t care, told me she wouldn’t even fight for you or the farm if I gave her an easy divorce. Bet she would’ve fought if she knew about the money I make as Lorde. God what a bitch.”

Stan balled his fist as more tears began to fall, he quickly pulled his jacket on and yanked his hat off the rack. He didn’t put it on as he opened the door and just walked out ignoring Randy calling out wondering where he was going.

The fifthteen minute walk felt like hours as he was stuck alone with his thoughts but in no time he was in front of his Aunt’s house ringing the doorbell. Thomas opened the door and only had to look at him for a second before he yelled for Aunt Laura to hurry from the kitchen. He pulled Stan into the house pulling him into a half hug rubbing his nephews back as he closed the door. 

Laura hurried out of the kitchen confusion clear until she saw Stan who was crying full force again. 

“Oh Stan sweetheart, what's wrong? What happened, did my stupid brother do something?”

Stan sobbed, his breathing erratic as he tried to form a sentence and only managed to stumble forward, pulling his aunt into a tight hug hiding his face on her shoulder.

“Auntie! Auntie, I-I, shes-moms.” He mumbled out shoulders shaking as he couldn’t get it out. Laura shushed him as she ran her fingers through his hair, one arm wrapped around him rubbing his back.

“It's okay, it's okay. Just breath sweetheart, just breath, I’m right here. Auntie is right here sweetheart and I’ve got you. Just let it out.”

Craig and Tricia peaked out of the kitchen looking at their parents before Craig made the decision to distract his sister.

“Come on Tricia, let's make hot chocolate for everyone. Let mom and dad take care of Stan.”

Laura led Stan over to the couch and sat down with him. She whispered words of comfort as she hugged him tightly and Thomas stood nearby worried for his young nephew and not wanting to leave them alone.

“She's not coming back, Auntie.” He whispered after a while, pulling away and sitting up to look her in the eye. “She said she's done, and I’m too much like Randy so she doesn’t, she doesn’t want me.” Laura’s heartbroke as she accepted a tissue from Thomas gently wiping Stan’s face.

“Oh sweetheart, you after nothing like my idiot brother. The only thing you share with him is your looks, I have watched both of you grow Stan. I promise you, you are nothing like him.” She cupped his face in her hands, rubbing his cheeks softly. “For one Randy is self centered and only thinks of himself, while we can all have our moment of self centeredness, you have done your best to grow past that and think of others. Second at your age my brother was already heavily drinking, and no I’m not stupid I was a teen once too, I know you drink but I also know you only drink at parties. Third Randy is, too state it clearly, fucking stupid and I have seen your report card, its not all A’s but you are very far from dumb.” Stan sniffled softly, reaching up and squeezing her hand with a watery smile.

“Thanks Auntie, it just hurts, she abandoned me with him. What am I going to do?”

“You’re going to prove her wrong, Stan. You are going to go on and graduate high school, then you’ll move on to college and you will prove Sharon that you are not Randy. You are going to live the wonderful life you deserve and she will have to suffer knowing she’ll never be a part of that life again.” Thomas moved forward placing a hand on Stan’s head ruffling his head lovingly.

“And we will be with you every step of the way, because there is no way in hell we are leaving our nephew alone with Randy of all people.” Stan laughed softly looking up at him with a soft smile.

“Thanks Uncle Thomas, I’m sorry I barged in, I just didn’t know where else to go. Uncle Jimbo might’ve known she was leaving and that thought made me not want to go to him.” Laura smiled softly as she stood up, stuffing the tissue into a pocket of her apron. Thomas wrapped an arm around his neck pulling him into a brief hug, as his wife kissed Stan’s forehead. Tricia bounced into the room carrying two cups of hot chocolate, Craig following after her looking annoyed with having to be there.

“Sweetheart, you are always welcome here no matter what. Even if you rob a bank and need a place to hide!” Thomas snorted letting go of him and accepting a hot chocolate from Craig while Tricia headed straight to her favorite cousin.

“Stan! Stan! Craig said you were feeling down so we had to make hot chocolate for you! So I made yours extra special with marshmallows and whipped cream!” She held the cup out to Stan with a bright grin that Stan returned with a warm smile. He accepted the cup before patting the spot besides him.and Tricia eagerly sat next to him.

“Thanks Tricia, this is just what I needed. Thank you too, asshole.” He teased looking at his cousin who rolled his eyes, flipping him off.

“Don’t mention it dumbass, seriously don't, can’t have people thinking I care about you.”

Some thoughts about the special i have never wrote down before i forget:

• i really appreciate the background? There was a shot of another classroom and it really stuck with me because i think this is one of the few if not only other time we see another classroom?

Idk it was a rare sight and it was cool

• Stan's plot. Omg my little poor babyboy Stanley, i loved him in this ep and how incredibly in-character he was, yes, he more than other characters would be hurt by forced loneliness and try to masquarede it projecting it on the ones he considers "weak" (like Butters) before admitting he was the weak one all along, he is scared of change and wants everything to return as it was when he was happier, Peak Stan Marsh Storyline

• I guess this is a minor complain but I really disliked that Kyle didn't hug him when Stan was crying, c'mon Kyle, your SBF has expressed his own deepest pain with more honesty than ever before and you don't even hug him? Is this really the moment of social distancing?

I get that Kyle kinda... didn't do anything here lbr but him doing nothing is worse than being mean to me, Cartman didn't hug him either but at least he was moved enough by his tears to do SOMETHING at least, which leads to...

• Cartman and Randy, specifically them having really similar character arcs, starting as just serving their selfish interests until they realize other people shouldn't suffer for their wishes, with Cartman actually being the more sympathetic out the two, and as we know... this will become a recurring trend for these specials... for the better or worse

Of course both of their attempts are destroyed by Garrison, a really interesting choice tbh, Garrison is very similar to both of them too, but leaning towards Cartman's explicitly ruthless and delusional side while Randy is more.... grounded i guess?

• I have talked about Randy and Jimbo not being siblings anymore, but in this special it makes sense why, Randy is suddently very cruel towards Jimbo, it's like the show forgot they are friends, it would be pretty weird even for Randy to use his brother as guinea pig for his weed covid vaccine; and also cuz, y'know he's trying to make him smoke his cum but whatever

• Nothing to say about her but I liked Sharon in this ep, i'm hust confused if the ending implies she is lying to Randy about smoking weed?

• Stephen and Butters... i really like how pissed off they were all lmao, it's one of those eps that really reminds you they are father and son

Butters is pretty interesting bc... despite the plot revolving around him he doesn't do a lot in this special, he is mostly there to give voice to the audience and complain on how incompetent everyone is, i'm pretty sure in the italian version Butters is the only kid to swear trought the entire to show, not Cartman, not Kenny, BUTTERS.

I think both Stan and the show kinda want to play with your expectations, Stan is right saying that the pandemic is hurting people who cracks down as easily as Butters, but he is not suffering the way he is, Butters is just angry, angry because he keeps being lied to and get denied of the things he thinks he rightfully should have, again a very Butters-like plot

But while everyone is suffering from isolation and the world failing on you and you failing the world as well, this pain is really mostly about Stan, Butters wishing for a bear is pretty cute tho and i hope they got him one later one 👍

Stephen also only appears in minor scenes but I kinda loved him? This is maybe the more openly aggressive he has ever been, there is no moment he isn't repling badly to someone, it's like he's having an even shittier week than the usual, love when in the chatroom scene he suddently calls out Thomas out nowhere because he doesn't want Butters to be near to Craig, which funny enough happens right in the next scene, he does actually knows his sons after all

Also minor note but. Why was Tweek's mom was spying Wendy's mom in the dressing room What was that

And the scene in the town where he just punches and knocks down Wendy's mom out the blue?? Causing the entire town to fight eachother??? He was NOT having him that day, do not cross roads with Stephen Stotch when his son is upsetting him if you don't want trouble lmao
