Read more! If you don’t have many physical books at home, download the Kindle app and buy some from the Kindle store. Many classics are available from the Kindle domain for free, such as Grimm’s Fairytales and the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Write more! Take this time to look back on past story ideas and make them bigger and better.

Create physical or digital art, whether it’s a sketch with watercolours or a digital painting on your graphics tablet.

If you’re like me and miss hiking outdoors, try playing games that recreate this feeling, such as Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Watch films that remind you of nature, particularly ones made by Studio Ghibli - my favourites are Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky!

I’d also recommend watching BBC nature documentaries as they’re always well produced, like the Planet Earth, Blue Planet, and Wild Japan series available on Netflix.

lo-fi wandering

If you search for something like skyrim relaxing music on YouTube you’ll come upon a lot of videos which are not intended to be watched. They are long mixes of music taken from that game, many with titles like for sleep or for study. I found one which even says for meditation, spa, healing therapy.

Content like this is fairly common on streaming sites now. But it’s interesting to me that Skyrim should feature so prominently in mixes of this sort. The music is undoubtedly one of the best things about the game, in part because it seems to do everything so well: it has big thumping orchestral numbers; it has delicate, catchy folk tunes; it has rich, dramatic choral pieces. But for most of the time the music is simply bubbling away in the background.

And this is appropriate, because most of the time in Skyrim you aren’t doing anything especially dramatic. You’re exploring, or wandering through a town, or cycling through the menus. Perhaps you are trying to figure out which turn to take in some gloomy dungeon. You do a lot of fighting in this game, and a lot of talking, but mostly you do a lot of walking, and looking, and thinking. It is one of those games that ends up feeling strangely meditative.

Skyrim demands most of your attention, but not all of it, because it isn’t especially dependent on skill or reaction times. It is also an incredibly patient game. Unlike a Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing, where you are always aware of the gentle passage of time, in Skyrim you are never in a hurry. The sun will rise and fall and the calendar will tick away, but one day is functionally indistinguishable from the next. You have an enormous list of things to do, but almost none of them are time-dependent. Your hero can eat and sleep but they will never grow tired or hungry. The world will wait forever to be saved. Nothing will ever worsen through your inaction. There’s something comforting in this.

This game is almost eight years old now, but I’m playing it for the first time on the Nintendo Switch. At first it struck me as a strangely flat experience. It seems basic. I don’t mean that in the sense that the game as a whole is a waste of time, or that it’s poorly written, or anything like that (though perhaps the high fantasy setting does it no favours). I mean that it is ‘basic’ in the sense that though it aims for high seriousness, it ends up feeling silly. Most of the time when you are required to do something in this game, the solution is silly. Melee combat feels like ice skating while swinging a polystyrene block at the nearest scowling baddie. Stealth is vague, and casting spells looks cool but feels mostly inept. Enemies blunder towards the player in the same way video game enemies always have. It’s a beautifully made game, but it lacks a certain depth.

And yet for all its limitations, the game is frequently captivating. The gift of the sound design, and of Jeremy Soule’s music, elevates it to something quite special. The version of the game on the Switch is solid, but the little speakers really don’t do it justice in hand-held mode. It’s a game that demands headphones. Fire flickers and water trickles underground; monsters grumble and roar; swords crash against armour. Sometimes the audio bed is barely noticeable. But often, while you are simply wandering with no particular aim, a simple, memorable tune rises up from the background. And it stays with you.
