I just think that 'animals are living intelligent creatures that have feelings and deserve to be respected' and 'when done properly farming is beneficial to both people and animals and there's nothing wrong with raising and killing animals for food, clothing, and other products' are concepts that very much can and should coexist
#i think a lot of people get too carried away in farming discourse to actually remember both of these things#some people are so aggressively anti-farming that they forget that meat and fur are necessary for some people#and that farming helps prevent overhunting of certain species#but some people are so aggressively pro-farming that they begin to think of animals as objects#that only exist to provide them with a product#animals deserve to be treated with respect and be given the best care possible while they're alive#but that doesn't mean that its a bad thing for them to die

You know that Chris Fleming line that goes "Call yourself a community organizer even though you're not on speaking terms with your roommates"?
I honestly think every leftist who talks about the "revolution" like Christians talk about the rapture needs to spend a year trying to organize their workplace. Anyone who sincerely talks about building a movement so vast and all-encompassing that it overwhelms all existing power structures needs the dose of humility that comes with realizing they can't even build a movement to get people paid better at a badly run AMC Theaters where everyone already hates the manager.
#method speaks#union stuff#politics#i guess#best case scenario in this plan we get some successful union drives#worst case people realize that movement building is hard#and also explicitly mentioning socialism is counterproductive#mostly i'm just venting#it's only april how is election discourse this unhinged already?

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
#seeing some discourse and im not saying lucy grey didnt know#im saying she never dropped the kind of hints that she knew like she did in the movie#or if she did snow isnt worried about them until he very suddenly is consumed by them#snow is not concerned about whether or not she believed him. of course she did! hes snow!#but then shes gone…. for a while……#and its the sudden immediate drastic unravelling that comes across so clearly in the book#that i knew wouldn’t translate to screen yet still cant help but miss#the hunger games#coriolanus snow#tbosas#lucy gray baird#not a crime or anything just a note that i cannot stop thinking about#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#this is all from memory of reading it quite a while ago. so maybe 3 pages is an exaggeration#but i remember it happening VERY quickly and without much external cause#like we as the reader have no indication as to whether shes nearby or not.#snow has no idea either. he just SUSPECTS. and his suspicion breeds the hatred that has been bubbling inside him all this time#he hates how she undoes him. he hates that he WOULD run away with her if shed let him keep his secrets#and he HATES more than anything that she makes him WANT to tell his secrets#he wants to be vulnerable and reveal the ugly nasty parts about himself and still be loved#but he does not let himself and it is everyone’s downfall#he chooses cruelty bc it is easy and familiar and makes him feel more powerful than the vulnerable give and take that real love requires

"trans people can be transphobic too" is absolutely true, I see it every day
but you guys Do realize that acting like being attracted to and wanting to date a trans person is inherently fetishizing, that it's Impossible to want to do that while seeing trans people as fully realized autonomous People, Is Also Transphobia
and it gets Especially weird when you apply it to other trans people blindly, as if there's No Reason for a trans person to be drawn to trans bodies (or Get This, to be more Comfortable with other trans people in a relationship) beyond being a chaser
whether someone is a fetishist or a chaser or not literally has nothing to do with whether they're attracted to trans people, it has to do with how they TREAT trans people. in much the same way being in a relationship doesn't make someone an abuser, abusing your partner does.
if being attracted to cis bodies is a neutral act but being attracted to trans bodies is a red flag then that's Saying Something About How You See Trans Bodies
#trans unity#queer unity#discourse#I know to Some of you cis attraction isn't neutral either#but it should be and you guys are weird

vexillology
[ID: Three panel "Pills that make you green" comic.
Panel 1: An ochre person with a triangle-shaped body is standing on a stage in front of a curtain.
Ochre: Hey everyone and thanks for showing up today. As you're all probably familiar there's been a lot of discussion about the green pride flag, and how lots of people in the community aren't really represented by it. And while there are a lot of flags for subcommunities we're really missing a unifying one
Panel 2: Ochre person pulls away the curtain, revealing literally just the regular real life Pride flag to the crowd of a variety of people with a skew towards a greenish majority
Ochre: So I'm going to suggest we use this rainbow flag, as a symbolic representation of the full color spectrum
Panel 3: Zoom in on the ochre person looking vaguely dejected, saying "oh..." as criticisms come in from the crowd:
"I feel that this does a poor job representing mauve people"
"Get better at vexilology" [sic]
"That looks so weird"
"There's barely even any of the original green flag left!"
"Way too complicated"
"Orange people don't even have anything to do with green rights"
"What's next, charred brown with lava cracks in it for refugees from Former Italy?"
End ID]
Start - Previous - Next
#before someone reads the opposite of the intended message: I don't agree with the critics.#the joke is that they're responding to the common real-life pride flag as if it's some weird new idea#like the discourse every time something gets added to the progress flag

some of yall use "amab" and "afab" as like, a woke substitute for "male" and "female" and its real weird. agab terminology is useful for talking about like, your personal life experiences and very specifically medical and legal problems you might run into. if you use it to describe a stranger then you're just going back to gender essentialism in a new hat. and implying you can clock everyone, to boot.
#'i saw an afab person' ok so you think people are assigned female because of some immutable quality to them gotcha#and that they can never actually lose that quality and transitioning is therefore essentially playacting cool cool cool#discourse /

it is completely understandable to be uncomfortable with the sexual assault in dandadan. it's important to discuss how it's framed, whether it's handled poorly, or if it could be been portrayed better. but the number of people - even fans - stating that it is only fanservice, irrelevant, or could be removed is frankly bizarre to for SO many reasons, starting with the fact that this parallel exists.
the anime made it even more obvious by interpolating cuts from the first scene into the second one.
i thought this scene showed that momo gaining her powers by believing in her relationship with her grandmother gives her the strength to fight back against what is basically a horrific, much more aggressive and abstract (maybe even absurd?) representation of her shitty gross ex - who was demanding she 'put out' and pay for the love hotel in very first scene.
while the escalation from one scene to the next is surprising, it's not something that comes out of nowhere. this first scene is meant to be a set-up to what will happen later. it sets the tone, though significantly more lighthearted at this point. it tells you that sex, sexuality, etc. is something dandadan will touch on - though you don't know what the scope and depth will be until later in the chapter.
i cannot recommend this video enough, as it discusses some interesting interpretations of what the serpoians and turbo granny represent in their respective assault scenes, as well as how right now the treatment of both scenes is unfortunately uneven.
more notes about plot and thematic relevance below the cut. spoilers for anime-onlies (up to chapter 8, will probably be covered in episodes 4/5).
momo was assaulted, and almost cut up by the serpoians, much like the other victims turbo granny appeared around. this is an intentional parallel. turbo granny goes to momo because that is what she does. again, SUPER unclear how that factors into turbo granny's assault of ken, but if we keep the video's interpretation of cynicism in mind, it could be related to that; maybe turbo granny has a cynicism toward men - similar to momo in chapter/episode 1 - and this is why she chose to attack ken. unfortunately, it's still too early to really understand and explain a lot of her motivations.
again, completely understandable to not like how the sexual assault was handled or portrayed, and it's important to keep discussing it. but this is what dandadan does for many different types of trauma and difficult life experiences. this is a huge part of dandadan's identity. if you don't like it, that is fine, but calling the sexual assault 'just fan service' is blatantly untrue.
#dandadan#L.txt#long post#dandadan analysis#< i guess? 😭#discussdadan#sorry for this kinda sloppy post but i need it out bc i feel like im losing my mind#this is not even ''''''''''a defense''''''''''' of the s/a i think it's really important to discuss framing/handling/etc etc#but some of the discourse arising from the first episode is maddening and is thoroughly not helped by ppl being weird/assholes abt it#you dont ''''''have to like it'''''' (< what does that even mean??) or keep reading it or literally anything#this is just a basic 'please engage w the text'

Stalking is a crime, yes that includes your yandere boyfriend
Assault is a crime, yes that includes your whumper/whumpee scenarios
Being part of a mob is a crime, yes that includes your sexy son of a mafia boss
Killing is a crime, yes that includes your blorbo
Zoophilia is a crime, yes that includes you liking Nick Wilde
All your "exceptions" from what is and isn't condemnable in fiction are, in real life, a crime as well. Every dark trope falls in the "it would be a crime to commit this irl" category, it's not just the big age gaps with adult/minor ships and the incest, it's ALL of them. All of them are crimes in the real world, by law. The sentence may vary but you'd still be sent to prison. "But I only like it in fiction!"
So do we.
So do we, so can you get off your high horse and just admit that liking dark themes in fiction, ANY dark theme, does not reflect your moral compass in real life and for the love of everything STOP pretending fake murder is better than fake incest? You sound preposterous.
#*drops mic*#fandom discourse#proship#anti censorship#I'm just tired man#if you've ever liked ANY sort of dark theme you're in on it and claiming only those you don't like are disgusting is-#-having some SERIOUS double standards just to save your pathetic ass from being what 'canceled' on the internet? lame.#derangedfujoshi rant

every time someone famous is outed as being a shitty person theres people going “this is why you shouldn’t idolize celebrities,” “why are you sad that a bad person is being exposed as a bad person,” like PLEASE just let people be upset that someone they liked sucks
#specifically this is about neil gaiman#to be clear (after some discourse) this does not mean we should just ignore what happened in order to be upset about everything#and it does not mean we should not stand with and support the victims!!!#people can be sad and disappointed that someone they liked is bad while also supporting the victims at the same time#I’m not too informed so if anyone wants to shed any light on the situation please feel free#neil gaiman#good omens

#there is twitter discourse happening.#poll#to be fair the discourse in part appears to be a misunderstanding#of the correlation between how often u wash linens/clothes and how often u change them#because. apparently to some people having more than one set of sheets is unimaginable?????#thats not the question here though#this may vary based on the season? or any other reason#i thought my answer was pretty reasonable but there are ppl on twitter that r like#if ur not doing it every week ur nasty. and genuinely.... u think im gonna go thru the effort#of changing it every fucking week.......#genuinely not here to judge i think theres a lot of factors into when u change sheets#but i refuse to believe people are Actually doing it every week. i want to know the circumstances#i guess if u r sweaty or the weather is really bad or ur fucking every night idk.

I do find it funny how much discourse there is around Astarion when Neil Newbon said he based him off a cat he tried to domesticate for three years.
"Why does Astarion keep making rash decisions?" Because he thinks he's going back to the streets any second now and refuses to leave survival mode.
"Why does he hate when we make good decisions?" Bitterness at being rescued "so "too late" plus the aforementioned survival mode that makes him want to leverage everything.
"Is he a good person or a bad person?" He has real safety and body autonomy for the first time in forever. Let him figure this out first by going on a Frieren style self discovery journey first and then discuss personality aspects.
"Is Astarion romantic or are his fans projecting other's aspects onto him?" See above. Also, the graveyard scene proved he can be romantic. He just figuring out beyond "laying dead animals on your doorstep" gothic part of romance.
"Why does Astarion try to go through the ritual even in playthroughs where he wants to stop it at any cause?" Imagine being a kicked street cat forced to his shit for all your life and finally getting the chance to not only eat the face of the person who forced you into this life, but steal all of his shit as well. It's a urge that's deeply hard to fight.
"Why is he an asshole?" He's a cat.
"What is the true face of Astarion?" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. No one knows, least of all him.
He's just a cat, guys. Leave him be with his favorite person and he'll probably be fine.
#BG3#Baldur's Gate 3#Astarion#i probably missed some discourse but i couldnt care enough to really get into the details
