I've been reading through some of your old asks since I remembered you were where I heard about Worm, and recently you wrote about how "deconstructions" of the superhero genre are often uniformed and lazy pastiche from people who seem to have not bothered engaging seriously with the source material. (There's a great quote from Ursula Le Guin about writers and critics all too often disregarding genre fiction, hence why the literati alll thought Harry Potter was original back in the day)
But you made the point that big two comics have been dealing with most of the plot holes in the genre for decades, and cited a few specific examples. I'm by no means a new comer to comics but I've largely stayed away from big two, and so I'm wondering, if you are so inclined, if you could share what you consider "required reading" to help me get started?
It seems like a fascinating thing to read about, and I love tracing genre histories.
Yesterday I finally finished a long long rec-list for @worlds-smallest-creature, which was a mix of foundational texts and stuff I personally thought was neat. I'm going to pare down and amend the list to ten comics that are particularly useful for getting a feel of the Big-Two space; comics that, if you read them, will instantly make significant portions of the references and in-jokes much more legible. Note that this does not universally map to high quality, ( though it does for most of them) just utility for understanding the genre and the space as it stands:
Watchmen: By Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The big deconstructionist comic, most directly in conversation with the two-and-a-half generations of superheroes that had been published when it first came out in 1985. This is the comic all other superhero deconstructions have been chasing and it's tonally informed basically everything that's come after.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: Frank Miller and Klaus Janson. The other big deconstructionist superhero comic of the 1980s. While nothing in it is actually canon, it hugely (and arguably negatively) informed the writing of Batman as a dark-gritty-anti-hero and gave rise to the endemic "Batman vs Superman in a fight to the finish" thing; like Watchmen, it's also a rumination on what went unsaid politically in the Silver Age of Comics. Huge amounts of the Batman Mythos are either repudiating this or parroting this, for better or for worse.
Marvels: Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross's gorgeously painted retelling of the first 30 years of the history of the Marvel Universe from the perspective of a photojournalist, from the first appearance of superheroes in the 30s to roughly the start of the Bronze Age. In addition to being a comic about the existential horror of being a normal person living in a world with Big Two superhero dynamics, it's also an excellent primer of the major players and plot beats from the front half of Marvel's publication history.
JLA/Avengers by Kurt Busiek and George Perez: One of the last intercontinuity crossovers published by Marvel and DC before they started circling the wagons on their respective IP. A major thrust of the piece is the two teams reacting with horror to the business-as-usual of their counterparts universe, in a way that's meant to highlight the historical differences in writing trends between the two; it also contains basically Every Single Superhero Who'd Ever Been Published Up Until 2004, making it a pretty useful who's-who birdspotting guide of both settings.
Astro City by Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson and Alex Ross: An anthology series set in a constructed pastiche Big-Two universe, following the lives of dozens to hundreds of characters as they make their way in the titular Astro City, the longstanding superhero capital of the world. Because the setting contains direct pastiches (and therefore commentary) on basically every significant Hero and general archetype who shows up in both Marvel and DC, and because every one-or-two issue vignette is usually in direct conversation with a specific trope or standing question raised by those characters and those settings, blowing through as much Astro City as you can will allow you to infer huge chunks of the decades-long history that it was written in conversation with- the type of characters who were published in each decade, the type of adventures they were going on in the 60s vs the 30s vs the 90s, and so on.
(Is this three things in a row by Kurt Busiek, you ask? Yes, because he's basically the on-call "thoughtfully root around in the guts of the architecture of Big Two Superhero Comics" guy.)
JLA (1997) By Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. This one was an ongoing, and it presents an interesting balancing act between being, essentially, a platonic example of the thing- no aggressive deconstruction, just a through and through superhero comic that balances accessibility to new readers, high-quality, high concept stories, deliberately enmeshing itself in remixed high-context deep-cuts from the silver-age, and having all sorts of odd little inscrutable asides that are the result of weird decisions being made in other books. Superman's blue and has lightning powers, roll with it. There's an Angel From The Actual Bible hanging around because they couldn't get the rights to Hawkman, roll with it. This thing is essentially training wheels for the reality that almost any big-two ongoing worth reading for any reason is doomed to be jerked around and informed by the larger editorial context at the time, which you might only know bits and pieces of going in; a sufficiently gripping comic will reel you in regardless.
Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont and a whole bunch of artists. Claremont's run from the 70s to the 90s was a development site of a huge number of enduring cape tropes- in particular a lot of the ones related to superpowered factionalism, dialing in on relatively specific and well-defined powersets applied to problems in a puzzle-logic kind of way, shoring up the "Mutant Metaphor" as a parallel to civil rights movements, and a lot of stuff related to bad futures and time travel. By virtue of the amount of time he spent in creative control of the book it coheres better than the average big two thing (though that's not necessarily the same thing as it being universally good.) To this day the genre is plastered in the thumbprints of Days of Future Past and The Dark Phoenix Saga, so those will both be useful context.
Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. A reboot and retelling of Spider-Man for a 21st century audience, which was so meteorically successful that the Ultimate Universe- a condensed, lean, and heavily politically barbed reboot of all of Marvel's major properties- was spun off from it. On top of being a very good comic, Bendis's background in crime fiction writing, decompressed style and ear for naturalistic dialogue became something of a house style at Marvel for a while and heavily influenced the space generally; the DNA of this one can be found all over the place. This remains probably the best self-contained Spider-Man run ever produced.
The Authority By Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. The premiere cool new superteam of the late 90s/early oughts; paradoxical revolutionary authoritarians willing to lay waste with abandon to all the evils of the world that normally go untouched or get off with a slap on the wrist. This book was extremely stylistically important in its embrace of a cinematic 'widescreen" pacing intended to make the comic feel like a breakneck blockbuster movie, and significant chunks of what was to come over the next decade ate its lunch stylistically. This team evolved out of Stormwatch, a Jim-lee 90s-antihero outing that Ellis took over with issue 37, hollowed out and wore like a skinsuit in order to write the same kind of genre commentary spec-fic story he liked to. Ellis's work on that run is useful context for The Authority, and a pretty good read, but not strictly necessary.
The Ultimates V1 and V2 By Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch. Millar was the guy who took over The Authority from Ellis after issue 12, and The Ultimates- the version of the Avengers created for the above-mentioned Ultimate Universe- was his attempt to create a superhero team with essentially the reverse characterization from The Authority. Where The Authority were quasi-left-anarchist mavericks willing to coup the president if that's where their fight against evil took them, The Ultimates were characterized as a gaggle of incompetent, jingoistic stooges who solved only slightly more problems than they personally created, backed Bush to the hilt with the illegal invasion of Iraq, and represented a massive escalation in an international superhuman arms race that was implied to be on course to end the world. Because of the book's massively uncharitable characterization of literally every member of the Avengers lineup with the exception of Thor, and because of Millar's deep-seated edgelord sensibilities, this book is regarded poorly by many. (I like it as satire.) However, it (and the rest of Ultimate Marvel) represent the single biggest aesthetic influence on basically every Superhero film of the 2000s onward and the MCU in particular- despite arguably being an aggressive attack on the enterprise the MCU would become.
I'll round the list out with Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos. This was Bendis's other keys-to-the-kingdom-granting outing at Marvel. A noire piece following Jessica "Jewel" Jones, a retired superheroine-turned-PI, as she roots around in the dirty laundry at the outer edge of the superhero community; similar to Astro City in how it uses "edge-case questions" about how superhero settings would work as the launchpad for sad (and frequently anticlimactic) little excursions about the Human Condition. The DNA of this one is also floating around in the space.
Happy Reading!

I think Filoni could have been ok if they’d let him be in charge during the time they were making the Sequels (anything would have been better than JJ Abrams and co.), but as it stands, it feels like too little, wayyy too late.
And yes, Filoni’s style is highly ‘meta’ and self-referential, which can work in specific circumstances and even be entertaining at times, but perhaps isn’t the most ideal approach to counter Disney’s constant churned-out wannabe MCU content.
That being said, I’ve already solved this problem for myself ages ago by quitting Disney SW altogether. I haven’t watched a single piece of Disney SW media since 2018, and I’m much happier for it. Sorry for those who are still invested, though…
nothing brings me less joy than dave filoni getting more creative control over star wars. disney star wars already drags because all disney cares about is continual new 'content' that attempts to mimic the MCU-style universe where everything is interconnected and everything feels like a promo for the next 'thing' and this isn't going to improve with dave 'did you get that reference?😉' filoni.

The ultimate question: Is Todd Haynes taken or single? tags n warnings: none, just fluff. word count: +900 masterlist
Tumblr media
No one really knows how this game started in your head. Maybe it was with your friends while you were watching the boys or some trend you found online. But whenever you spotted a cute guy, you’d go with two options:
“Taken or single?”
The rules were simple. Since most of the cute, cool guys had girlfriends, all you had to do was watch for a while, looking for a ring on their finger, a wallpaper on their phone, or them typing something with a silly, carefree smile. Sometimes, though, a few guys would confuse your radar, staring longer than necessary for a guy who was supposed to be committed. Those ones were immediately dismissed; you didn’t want to be part of any games.
But in this game, there was a small exception: curly hair, radiant charm, and a smile as sweet as candy. Todd Haynes. Taken or single?
You leaned your head against the wall while watching the boys chat animatedly. Marty was definitely single. He was cute like a teddy bear, but he was messy and, based on his conversation, there was no way he’d ever touched a girl in his life. Dave Lizewski, on the other hand, was definitely taken. He was way too handsome to be a little single guy without someone holding him on a tight leash. But Todd…
Todd was terribly cute. He was sweet, had a soft voice, and knew how to balance nerdy topics with feminine things, like someone had taught him. Sometimes, he’d look at you for a brief moment, just like he was doing now, avoiding Dave’s gaze. But as always, he’d quickly look away as if nothing had happened. You’d never seen him with a girl, but he was always respectful with his friends. And worst of all: he was always so sweet to you.
That alone might suggest he was single, but you could never be sure. Maybe he was just really nice. I mean, I guess every guy kisses his friend on the forehead, right? Maybe. Even if you weren’t that close, it could still be common.
“Just a sec…” Todd’s voice interrupted your thoughts, and you raised your head to see him walking toward you. “Hey. How’s it going? You look kinda down today.”
“Down?” You repeated, frowning. Well, you did have a headache, crazy hormones due to your period approaching, and a pretty unstable mood. It was natural for him to think you were sad. Another hint that he knew about the female world.
“Yeah… you seem a bit off. Have you had any water today?” He asked, pulling you into a comforting hug, kissing your forehead like he always did.
“I did, but not enough.” You replied, letting out a faint sigh as you inhaled the relaxing, almost childlike scent emanating from Todd’s body. “Do you wear baby cologne?”
“Damn. It’s just... my mom bought it for me.” He laughed, pulling back, embarrassed, before leaning against the wall beside you. “But hey, did something happen?”
“No… just… you know. PMS.” You admitted, deciding there was no point in lying about something so natural. And something told you it was okay to trust him with this. “What did you think was wrong with me?”
“I don’t know... beautiful?” He replied with a silly laugh that made you smile. Beautiful. That would stay in your head for a long time.
“You’re so cute, you know that?” You teased, raising an eyebrow and giving him a little nudge with your hip.
“Am I?” He laughed, feeling his face warm up before he realized it. He quickly glanced at Dave and Marty, who were trying not to laugh, watching the two of you. He discreetly flipped them off and then turned back to you. “Hey... uh... are you free on Saturday?”
You swallowed hard. Well, a guy with a girlfriend wouldn’t ask something like that, would he? Or maybe he’d bring his friends along? “Saturday…”
“Saturday night. Or afternoon. Actually, whenever works for you. I don’t do much other than study for this stupid college stuff, so it depends on you.” He stammered, moistening his lips that suddenly felt dry with anticipation. Dave had said, ten minutes ago, that the worst she could say was no. There were a million things you could say instead of no. Maybe call him an idiot, slap him, or say you were getting married on Saturday to a truck driver from the West.
“Afternoon works great.” You replied, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. “What are we gonna do?”
“I don’t know… like… do you wanna go to the movies?”
The neon sign flashed in your head: Saturday, movie, date, single, available, ready for long make-out sessions in those theater seats before an usher kicks you out.
“Yes. It’s been so long since I went.” You smiled, which also made his lips curl into a shy grin.
“Perfect. So… I’ll see you Saturday at the movies?” He asked, pushing himself off the wall.
“Yes. It’s a deal.” You nodded, gripping the strap of your bag tightly, trying to make sure this was real.
“And sorry I can’t pick you up from home. I’m taking my driver’s test. I failed the motorcycle test.” He confessed, messing with his curls. “But I promise I’ll pick you up whenever I have a bike, okay?”
“Okay.” You said, trying to hide your huge smile at Todd’s promise as he headed back to his friends.
“You see, dude? I told you she was single.” Dave yelled, slapping Todd on the back, making him jump in surprise.
“Yeah, dude. Say it louder. Maybe she didn’t hear you!” Marty teased, pushing Todd playfully. But the goofy smile on Todd’s face gave away how happy he was for taking the first step. In the end, he’d been in the same game as you for way longer than you’d realized.

Imagine one day a new social trend starts spreading. It’s something unbelievably dumb. Not harmful per de, but truly silly to believe. Let’s say, I dunno, healing crystals start going mainstream. Everybody’s talking about their crystals. It becomes impolite to criticize people who believe in healing crystals. They become a big part of people’s personalities, and people on TV start talking about them, and one day years down the line politicians are debating funding for crystal-based medicine. And through it all you are sitting there going, what the fuck is happening. I thought we were all on the same page on this. You want to get along and be friendly and open minded but you cannot pretend to believe in healing crystals, this is nonsense, and when the topic comes up you refuse to lie about it. This eventually starts to have social consequences—they’re that popular!—but what can you do? You cannot pretend a lump of quartz can cure the flu or whatever. It’s just all so unbearably embarrassing.
I think what the centrist/liberal/center-left reactionary turn driven by culture war stuff feels like. And I think the key emotion is probably cringe. Not hate, not fear, though those emotions may reinforce the turn. I think in a lot of cases people who imagine themselves pretty open minded and flexible have as part of their worldview something they thought was bedrock social consensus—on the level of “healing crystals are silly woo”—so bedrock maybe that it didn’t even need to be a conceptual boundary they actually policed in their minds.
For instance, when she started her anti-trans turn, JK Rowling made a big show of not being really anti trans, just arguing that Some People Had Gone Too Far. She wasn’t a frothing religious reactionary, after all. And I believe that’s probably true! I think Rowling probably did have a mental model of sex and gender with a little bit of give in it—of the “we can humor the odd weirdo” type. But as the discussion of trans rights in the UK got more serious over her lifetime, trans people went from “the odd weirdo” to “a recognized minority,” and eventually this ran against a bedrock belief that on some level men are men and women are women and never the twain shall meet. To act otherwise was just too embarrassing. And she wasn’t going to embarrass herself in the name of political correctness.
Other people whose brains have been eaten by the anti-woke mind virus (as @eightyonekilograms calls it) have something going of the contrarian in them, who enjoys yelling “up yours, woke moralists!” or w/e. Im thinking of ppl like Glenn Greenwald here, or Dave Chapelle, people who seem not to feel alive except when people are mad at them. That’s a separate but interesting dynamic. And there are people like Graham Linehan who become totally unhinged through this process of auto-radicalization, moths drawn ever closer to a particular source of validation within their chosen reactionary subcommunity, until they are truly parodies of themselves. That is also an important dynamic, but it’s one that only takes hold after the initial turn has begun.
I think the role of that feeling of cringe, that refusal to entertain an idea because it is too embarrassing (even if it does actually have a decent body of research behind it, unlike crystals) is important to think about, because I am interested in how to get people over it. I know that feeling has affected my own thinking over my lifetime. I wasn’t raised particularly conservative, but I had to learn not to cringe at a lot of feminist thought before I could appreciate it and learn from it. I explicitly didn’t have that cringe when it came to gay people for whatever reason, so it never entered my mind that it might be a problem. I remember being surprised to learn when I was very young that some boys wanted to marry other boys, but my response was “huh. Go figure.” Because for whatever reason I had not picked up that this was something I was supposed to be grossed out by. A general doctrine of empathy, of trying to understand people on their own terms, can help forestall some of this stuff, but it’s not foolproof in either direction—I don’t want to believe crystals have healing powers if it becomes socially popular to do so, just because it is socially popular to do so! And if they do, I don’t want to not believe they do just because it is socially unpopular!
(Obviously the crystals thing is not a one to one metaphor for the trans thing, so don’t read too much into that. Maybe astrology would have been a better analogy. Also I’m not talking just about people whose reactionary turn is predicated on trans issues—I think this dynamic applies to everything from gay rights to the Tridentine Mass. But trans issues are a handy example bc, as the adage goes, somebody posts once about trans people and they never post anything normal again. I think the classic rapid-onset trans derangement syndrome is closely tied to the fact that gender norms are a really deep element of many people’s social-consensus-based worldview, and so challenged to that worldview are felt as really cringe.)
I’m curious if other people who grew more liberal in their thinking over time had a similar experience of having to overcome what was basically a feeling of embarrassment at certain ideas.

Act End Flash Liveblog
Spoilers ahead, probably
Tumblr media
genuinely embarrassing how long i assumed this was a loading screen for. to be fair, it *does* look like an hourglass.
At this point i think the two options (note from the future: there is only one option, i have misunderstood) are seperate meat and candy thingies. Or maybe the Vriska/Anti-Vriska theory is right, and it represents that? Either way, i bet it'll spin when i click it.
...
I don't know why i was expecting to be able to liveblog that. That was all so fast... gonna watch it again
Tumblr media
Was this guy born with knife and fork horns? That'd lock him into some kind of food industry from the start. Or maybe his company carved his horns for branding. It'd make sense for a Crockercorp owned company to do that, i guess.
wait, why did Tavvy leave by going up top the wing when there's a door at the bottom?
That was one hell of a youth roll.
Tumblr media
Isn't that John's shirt?
nice dave indeed
Tavvy just killed that guy. For no reason. That's going on his report card, and Sollux has every right to kill him now.
Either that missile was made of bird bones and plaster of paris or Tavvy has some serious deflecting ability
I love how Sollux mourning his food is the most detailed part of the flash
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess that wasn't heroic or just. The light kind of implies Jake's hope reality manipulation let him put his thumb on the scale, right?
It's been a good long while sicnce we've seen that cool godtier regeneration effect, too.
Ohh I originally thought she was twisting their necks, but growing their heads is even more gruesome
I like how both sides are kind of terrified of the gods
Tumblr media
I was wondering if they were going to bring back the last jack. Do you think he asked for his mech to be dog shaped specifically
Jake did something again, but like last time it was a small bit of a big flash so i bet nobody will remember again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is the opposite of a hug
Where did she get that gun from
It's not even a weird troll bug gun that's a whole regular gun
did she have a Jake level?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she sure *shut* them up
did Jane merge those guys? Expeienced godtiers can do some *weird* stuff
Tumblr media
Didn't some of the guys in the Crockergoon crowd have both of these weapons? But at least one of them was being used by the LOBsTER. The Plasma Sword industry is booming, and it's clearly not owned by Crockercorp. I bet it's Sila's parents selling them to both sides.
It's interesting that Rose just walked toward the bullet. That's kind of a bootstrap paradox, since she's only accepting her death because she predicted it... that's nothing new for homestuck though.
Tumblr media
H4H4 WH4T 4 CL4SS1C JOHN PR4NK, PR3T3ND1NG TO B3 VR1SK4
Also, 10:08. Arc number again, kind of.
Tumblr media
So helltier beats seer of light predictions... I wonder if that's anything to do with the inversion stuff the baloneyscholars were on about. Like, she's super voidy now? That'd explain why she looks like that.
Like grimdark, but more cheerful about it?
I wonder if it'll be something different on the bottom of the glass... like a Meat version, or maybe the anti-vriska?
seems the same
Ok yeah that was the same
Ohhh they swap when you click it, i thought it was selecting either side of the hourglass
that makes more sense actually
still worth rewatching a third time
wait a minute, if i watch it on youtube i can go take screenshots so my liveblog makes sense! Except the part where I said I shouldn't have been expecting to be able to liveblog it, because now I will have been able to.
Now i just need to read the news, check the bingo card and write some report cards.

Alright, I’ve just finished Consorting with Spirits by Jason Miller.
Summary:
8/10 if I can ignore the author
7/10 if I can’t
So here’s the thing. I have come out of this book with a deep distaste for this guy. He just… oof, there are times that he just reads like a twitter tech bro who, within ten minutes of meeting him, will tell you all of the famous people who follow him on twitter. There’s just something about the constant name-dropping of Super Cool and Edgy spirits that just got on my nerves to no end. Like, buddy, can I get some more examples of you working with local no-name spirits in your area? Spirits that are just a lil guy? Or do they ALL have to be big name demons from ancient grimoires and cryptids from local legends and shit?
Also, yeah there’s too many times where he’s… maybe not always outright saying, but definitely heavily implying that closed cultures can be yours to take from if you really really really want to. I don’t love that.
AND chapter 2 definitely opens with a little example story of how Dave Chapelle’s Netflix comedy special is a case of people just ~*~*not understanding a joke and being too sensitive*~*~ and HELLO SIR????????
(He doesn’t specifically say it’s that comedy special, but check the timeline of writing vs that comedy special. It’s 100% what it is.)
So. Yeah. I’d love to meet this guy so I can throw a drink in his face.
THAT BEING SAID.
I am so annoyed to say that as much as I hated this guy, that’s how much I loved the book.
UGGGGGGGHHHHHHH. Friggin’… out here like goddamned Dabbler’s Guide to Witchcraft. WILL YOU PLEASE LET ME HATE YOUR BOOK?? I WANT TO!
But no, it’s actually a pretty good one. Best ever? Nah. But good. I am definitely better for having read it, and it gave me a lot of stuff to think about. There’s a section about how you *can’t* be bad at meditating, and it just… [chef kiss]. It was a really good section and I’m very glad to have read it.
Some of the criticisms I’ve heard of this book is that if you’re not interested in working with Hekate, St Cyprian, or Astaroth, then this book isn’t going to be very useful. And I can see what they mean, because they make up the bulk of the examples in the book. You’d think they were the only entities out there to work with. But though Jason isn’t always the best about saying it, the Hekate/Cyprian/Astaroth rituals are supposed to be examples of how to structure your own thing to fit the entities you work with.
There’s good, practical advice about working with and communicating with spirits, and it’s stuff you can actually put into practice. Additionally, I don’t recall him having any real “You need to buy this fancy thing!” stuff in there, which is nice. Even the anti-capitalist witch books I’ve read have had SOME kind of consumer element to them.
He says that this should not be your first witch book, and I (sort of) agree. This isn’t a basic-witchcraft text, so you should know how to put together some basic protection, do some divination, etc. There’s a good quote in chapter 7 that says “If every book has to contain every possible preliminary and protection, then there will never be room for the substance of the book itself.” I LOVE that. I’ve read too many books that are supposed to be about some specialty, but they spend so long rehashing the basics that they barely even touch on the thing the book is supposed to be about.
That being said, while I wouldn’t consider this a Basic Witchcraft book, I would consider it a Basic Spirit Work book. If you know what you’re doing and you consider yourself a spirit worker, I don’t know that you’ll really get anything much out of this book. If you want to learn to be a spirit worker, though, this one has enough foundational things in it to get you started, imo.
(This is the part where I usually link you to the book in the Portland Button Works shop, because I want you to buy things from Alex, but I don’t see the book there anymore? idk if it’s gone gone or if it’ll restock. Anyway. Support your local bookstore, support witches with indie bookstores, etc.)

List of weird shit Clarke included :
The space odyssey series certainly was a ride. There’s a lot of great elements to it and some… not so much. A good deal, especially in later books, becomes a bunch of real weird and specific stuff either he’s horny about and … if I have to be scarred so do you.
Some of this is just funny/specific and not “bad” weird, will specify.
Sex toys on the discovery
The nipple thing
Everyone is super into diving as a hobby in 2010 (just funny)
“The pleasures and pitfalls of zero G sex we’re greatly exaggerated” (something along the lines of this, just funny)
Dave having a messed up grief fueled situationship with his dead older brothers girlfriend (WHY)
Space divorce (funny)
Heywood seeing Starchild Dave as higher being because he didn’t form a dick (he could very loosely make a outline of a human form only detailing the eyes but Floyd wanted full nude apparently)
Ship rape
Jupiter explodes and becomes a second sun and everyone’s just cool with that.
Pangea is implied to have reformed killing thousands and everyone’s just sort of cool with that
“Bioluminescent orgasm”
Heywood gets the shits from drinking comet water
Random Gay couple with a parrot (just funny)
Having chips in your hand with all identifying information and NEEDING them to do anything along with NEEDING the brain cap and it not being a choice (cyberpunk dystopia who? Maybe I’m just jaded)
When going through the brain cap testing Frank “for a moment he even had a violent erection”
Religion is eradicated and “icky” but religion still technically exists
Implied sexual relationships with genetically enhanced gorillas
Dinosaurs and wings are a thing
The astronautics agency drugged their food with anti-horny drugs without their knowledge
Anti-circumcision plot point (like the bald thing in sounds like a personal issue the author should sort out.)
Criminals are basically mind controlled non people doing the undesirable jobs
Frank gets put in a suite dedicated to Dave. Pictures and everything (That’s so cruel lmao)
3 decade and 15 year time skip where a boyfriend blows up, Frank speed runs starting a family and getting divorced. It is a time skip that changes little as everything resets to status quo

Joni Mitchell: I was what was known as a "late Dylan fan". At one time I was almost anti-Dylan, and I made a lot of enemies going around saying it... I thought he was putting me on, I couldn't accept him. It's a trait of mine. I used to be more outspoken; now I'm more noncommittal until I really figure out what they are saying. The thing was I shared no experience with Dylan at that time, so the thing was, I thought that a lot of his stuff. . . the things I thought were ambiguous and were not written honestly, I find out now were just the things I had no idea of at the time. So as I experience some of his experiences, or bring some of my experiences to his music. . . it's like I always thought Shakespeare was really wordy and weird, right until I went to Stratford and saw a man who recited Shakespeare like it was really 20th century. It lost all that super-drama stuff that really turned me off, and it flowed like 20th century English, and I understood it. So it's the same thing with Dylan; now every time I listen to him, the things that I thought were just words for word's sake make sense to me.

Note
every now and then ill come back to this blog because its the only place where i can criticize homestuck and have people listen to it without screaming, "gurhhh ummm u just hate cuz um um um.. your.. your transphobic! homophobic!"
i just wanted to say homestuck fans have some of the worst humor ive ever seen, ESCPECIALLY the homestuck team. it feels so, milk toast. i get a insane vibe of old person who is trying so hard to make funny memes.
one of the comics was just,, vriska saying "gay" over and over? its not the fact that its a gay joke, cuz i think lgbtq jokes can be funny. but its just so uncreative here. it feels like laziness on full display. repeat gay over and over.... i dont really get it i guess.
or the general obsession with lgbtq identity in homestuck fandom. again, out of context this sounds like homophobic or transphobic bs but its moreso i just feel a insane dissapointment how storytelling is not valued anymore in this fandom. you just slap a label on a character and thats as far as content goes now a days.
its been like that for years as well. how many variations of different genders and sexualities until we get.. some creative headcanons? a creatively made comic? some storytelling that fleshes out the characters deeper?
the thing is people could make interesting stuff with lgbtq identities too but they never do. the bar is so fucking low man.
TLDR; homestuck fandom is the epitome of anti-creativity.
Yeah, that Vriska gay jokes was from the official Homestuck Independent Creative Union team that was posted on Patreon, drawn by floralmarsupial. It sucks hard. Someone said it looks like Vriska trying to gaslight Dave to thinking he is gay (for Karkat). It should feel wrong, but LGBT and Davekat fans don't care. Bullying and grooming are the same kind of definition in their eyes. Most of the humor in modern Homestuck plays it safe. They don't want to offend others if they try to do edgey, dark, or slapstick humor. So the go-to kind is often the hashtag relatable humor. But even then, that could be taken as offensive by someone. Even the pool of latest Internet memes can be hard if most of it sucks for what's currently popular or can't be portrayed in certain forms of styles. Simple text over image is not the same as trying to say it in a speech bubbles at times. Sudden deep fry visual humor won't pull off well if previous art styles had them looking clean and crisp at first. Maybe it can pull off well, but the execution of it mostly sucks in recent times by modern generation. LGBT themes really have taken over priorities in story telling, even when it is not involved or that important in the narrative. Like how does being trans gonna help save the world from impending doom from a big bad that is destined to appear in every existing timeline? Can we also get headcanons that may expand on the characters interest? Like if Eridan is interested in military war history, would that extend to movies or video games he could watch/play? It could get people to look more into other things they never thought they would be interested in. What about Dave's interest in collecting dead things? How about him having a fucking dinosaur collection in his house because it is cool? Showing his silly side a little? Or have Jade's gardening being taught to the other citizens of Earth, be the one that ends world hunger since plantations would be possible even in places that shouldn't be able to grow certain types of food?

I tried to take a nap. It was not a very good sleep. I woke up and gagged? Very weird. I think some of it was I didn't eat enough today. I as distracted by being excited that my mom was visiting with my aunt and uncle. And despite being really tired, I had a really lovely day.
I would stay up until 2am ast night with Sylvia. I was wide awake so I just decided to hang out in the backroom with a snack and a blanket. She sleeps really easy laying on me so I just let that happen. And it was a nice night. I struggled to wake her up at midnight and so she wouldn't have that bottle until closer to 1. But then I was able to get her to her bassinet at 2 and join James in bed.
And I slept alright, even if it wasn't enough. When I woke up at 830 I didn't feel amazing but it was fine. It would take time to shake off how I felt, but that just seems to be the way it's going to be. It's frustrating but I am trying to be gentle with myself.
I felt really pretty today. My hair was looking great. I loved my outfit. I was in a good mood. James brought me baby and a little breakfast. I had a scrambled egg and mozzarella sticks. Which is probably a slightly unusual breakfast but was very good.
I checked on Mom and she said they were coming around 1130. So I had time to walk round the house and make sure it was tidied enough.
James went for an hour bike ride to try and take advantage of how beautiful it was out today. It was basically perfect weather.
I brought Sylvia downstairs with me and popped her on the play mat and fed the animals and then grabbed the broom to clean the outside steps.
We had anti slip mats (because when we first moved in I slipped and fell down the stairs) but they needed to be better affixed. I have gorilla tape so after I swept them me and James (who had biked up while I was out there) got them all stuck down. We could hear Sylvia fussing though so once we were done James went inside to check on her and I finished sweeping some of the dirt into the street and off the sidewalk.
I would hang out with Sylvie while I waited for my family to come through. She was getting fussy again. I just think her belly hurts but mainly she just wants to be held. Which is totally fine and developmentally normal. I just wish she was comfy.
I heard my mom outside. She was letting Nadine and Dave out and then would park on the other side of the street. I was so excited to see them all.
Everyone was oblivious excited to see the baby. My aunt Nadine brought a silver dollar for Sylvie. Apparently my grandmother always had a silver dollar for every new baby because you are supposed to see if they will hold it and if they do they will be rich. And I joked that if they don't, they'll be interesting instead.
I gave Nadine and Dave a little house tour. Mom cuddled baby. And after we showed off the house everyone got to hold Sylvia for a while.
I was really happy to sit and talk. James made coffee for everyone. Sylvia was mostly awake and not to fussy. She was happy to be held and passed around and look at stuff. She is a good baby. I love her a lot. She seems to be the most comfortable sitting up but she has no neck control so it's practice I guess. We are doing our best.
The visit was not long enough. I knew it was going to be a shorter one but still. I made sure we got some pictures outside with the nice sun light. Everyone was teasing me about eating lunch but I just wasn't interested. And we arent in a place to go out with baby for a meal yet. So everyone would give hugs and teasing jabs and then they were off.
James had said they wanted to go for a walk in the park and I really wanted to go too. So we got Sylvia's stroller and next bottle and we started walking. And it was absolutely beautiful. The breeze was a little cold still but the sun was so good.
We walked to get ice cream and it was nice to just talk and enjoy being outside. And the ice cream was good even if there was a small group of loud children playing a weird game that was basically rock paper scissors but they just yelled pichachu over and over?? Kids are funny.
We started heading back home. James collected more sticks. We wrapped Sylvia in James's hoodie because she was fussy again. Unsure if the hoodie just made her feel warm or if it smelled like James, but it worked.
I was starting to not feel amazing. I brought my pain meds with me but I really just wanted to go home and have a snack.
When we got back here James took baby and I had a soda and cheez its and set on the swing in the sun.
I was not feeling amazing but I tried to be. Sylvie started being fussy. James was trying to cook so I came back inside and me and Sylvia got on the couch to chill.
I would eventually fall asleep. It was not an amazing nap, because I was worried about sleeping with Sylvia. But James was right next to us in the kitchen sonot felt a little bit safer.
When I woke up James had made me a burrito but I felt really bad and it was to salty. I had cereal instead.
Now we are all hanging on the couch. Sweetp is laying on my legs. We are watching The Pitt. And after this episode Sylvia will get a bath. And I will take a shower. And we will hopefully we can all sleep in the same room.
Tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful again. Our plan is to walks round fells point and go to a pretty patisserie and walk around the water. I hope we get more rest tonight and we can have fun tomorrow.
Goodnight everyone. Be safe out there!
