Growing up in Somalia, I remember how magnificent the night sky was. You could see thousands of stars on a clear night, we would sit as the elders taught us the constellations in Somali.

They would tell us elaborate stories about the milky way, they called it "Halkii habaar qabe hooyadii jiiday" ! Translates as where the cursed one pulled his mother!.

They would tells that story to enforce obedience to our parents and elders. Then demonstrate the consequence of disobedience by showing us "gigane"or the crucified one. The older me knows it by its western name now, Orions belt.

The night sky plays an important role in Somali mythology, when babies are born, elders would look up their stars. When the rainy season is near, they would look up the stars to see whether its going to be a fruitful rainy season "gu'" or draught "abaar".

Poems abundantly referenced the night sky and stars.

This was a time before light pollution! In the town where we lived, population hundreds of thousands , there was one engine that produced some electricity and was only lit from 6 to 9 pm in few affluent homes. The rest used kerosene lamps or "faynuus" as we called it. This was not in the 1950s but as recent as the late 1990s. A country wrecked to smithereens by civil war.
