331% Funded | 15 days to go!
If you've been following me for a while you'll know I'm soon going to be releasing The Perilous Pear & Plum Pies of Pudwick, a 52 page full-colour, fully illustrated adventure for Melsonia where a group of plucky adventurers will shrink to insectoid size and adventure into the uncanny world that exists inside a sapient pear tree in a system agnostic weird fantasy bugcrawl.
If that interests you, you should absolutely check out Beetle Knight, which I hope to run TPPAPPOP with when I get my grubby palps on it!
Beetle Knight has got a cool contested rolls system, an emblems mechanic reminiscent of the medals in Bug Fables or charms in Hollow Knight, and it comes from a team embedded in the OSR/NSR design trajectory.
Tumblr media
I'm not involved with Beetle Knight, but if luck is on our side both projects will release the same day Silksong comes out! If it sounds like your kind of game (and you know it is if you're following me) go check out the kickstarter page!

Fabula Ultima World Building
General World Lore
This is a world where there was in fact a legendary hero who defeated an Ultimate evil in antiquity, however in the process, the great Tree of Mana burned down.
The Tree was the source of Mana, and ever since, free flowing mana has been in decline.
This has happened slowly. Slowly enough that people have acclimated to it. Some even think its a hoax. (Think Climate Change in our world)
Magicrystal is a mineral that can store mana. Magicrystals that existed prior to the death of the Mana tree are still full of magic, and is a Valuable resource that is mined.
Once an area is completely tapped of Mana, including having any remaining magicrystals strip mined, it begins to fill with a new, darker energy colloquial called "Miasma". The true nature of Miasma is still a topic of research and debate.
High concentrations of either Mana or Miasma can spawn monsters.
Nature of Magic
Magic is taught in academies that are nominally politically neutral.
Mages use magicrystals to fuel their spells.
There is still enough ambient mana to slowly recharge magicrystal to levels that can power personal level spells. However, only mined magicrystal is energy dense enough to power large works. It has been observed that magicrystal that has been in a mage's possession for long enough can sometimes charge faster than expected. Research on this phenomenon is still underway.
Politics
The most technologically advanced nation is the Empire of Khalibi, which relatively recently underwent an industrial revolution fueled originally by now dwindling Magicrystal reserves.
Despite running low on Magicrystals, their advancement has not only refused to slow, but has somehow progressed even faster. How exactly is a state secret.

Solo RPGs for NaNoWriMo
In case you are unaware, there's a whole concept called a "solo RPG" that is effectively journaling prompts based around set conceptual worlds/themes and a randomizer (such as dice, or cards, or both).
I've been trying to get back into the habit of writing regularly, and to keep myself engaged despite having no fully-formed plot in mind I've been using these and writing them out as if I were a GM. It's second-person, and not particularly quality stuff - no intent to polish or publish, just trying to get back into the habit of actually putting out words.
I mention this because, even though I'm not participating in NaNoWriMo, I got curious about the word-count of my current efforts and discovered that it's actually over 12k words. I started sometime after November 1st, and I haven't actually "finished" the first day of actual RP play by the rules. So... it's definitely useful if you're looking for simple production (which is what NaNoWriMo and first drafts both demand).
I'm throwing this out there because I know I have writers who follow me, and it's been remarkably effective for the sake of getting over writer's block due to a lack of "what comes next" - if you don't know, roll dice or draw a card.
So here's what I'm using, as of the moment, in case these tools are of interest to others:
Ironsworn (for the oracle tables, basically - look online and most of them are already in generators if you'd like ease-of-use)
Iron Valley (for the decision/progress questions, as it's effectively a more simplified form of Ironsworn's challenge-roll mechanics, though the oracle tables here are also useful at times)
The Freeform Universal RPG (for the simple d6 oracle - I use a modified form of this, however, as I believe that "no" is a bad answer for storytelling; "no" should always redirect in some way towards some other plot point, so I replace "no" in the system here with a "no, because" which introduces a neutral twist)
Midnight Melodies (for the complications/advantages charts - seen here - which provide guidance for the "but" or "and" answers given by the FU oracle)
There are loads more Solo RPGs out there, too, many free or pay-what-you-want - so I'd encourage you to look into them in order to help you if you get stuck.

A game that says 'Yes' more
Alright folks, here it is:
🌟Everspark🌟
This is my answer to the question:
'What if we stripped everything off of heroic fantasy TTPRGS and kept only the vibes?'
The story behind this game starts 30 years ago…
Tumblr media
I remember my first RPG experience. The art, the setting, the idea of being a hero in a fantasy world that we discovered together—it all seemed magical.
But very soon the cracks started to show.
A disconnect between the promise and the experience delivered by the game.
It took me more than 30 published games to give this one a go, mostly due to self-consciousness ("Really? Another fantasy heartbreaker?")
But I had to do it.
Tumblr media
I had to know—what if we could actually live the promise that those book covers sold?
What if we could offer new players the experience they think they will have with that one game, without the frustration of a ruleset that says 'no' all the time?
That’s how Everspark was born.
Tumblr media
I want to provide those carefree, belly-laugh-filled, let’s-play-pretend moments of rolling dice, casting imaginary spells, and coming up with all sorts of shenanigans.
A great choice if you want to introduce the hobby to newcomers, or play with your kids (or parents!)
Tumblr media
I want to reignite that original spark that first attracted us to these kinds of games and never left us—the Everspark, if you will.
You get to tell epic tales, celebrate nat-20s, lament nat-1s, and spend some quality time daydreaming about dragons.
Tumblr media
The system is super simple: You roll a d20 and 'eyeball' the result to see if you get a critical, regular or mixed success (or failure).
Besides that, there's only a quirky little mechanic involving drawing stars on sticky notes that covers everything else you need.
Tumblr media
You can play solo or in a group, with or without a GM.
There are 8,000 possible character combinations, and you can make one in 20 seconds.
The game is very welcoming to foreign material, like settings, adventures, monsters, weapons, spells, and more!
All the art is by the amazing Ray Olli (and during the campaign, you can have your own custom character illustrated by him!)
Look at that:
Tumblr media
And, if nothing else has convinced you so far, you can play as a Capoeira Capybara:
Tumblr media
Everspark is funding now, and I'd appreciate your support and enthusiasm!
Please share it with anyone that wants to try a rules-light, vibes-full heroic fantasy tabletop game!
Make an indie designer happy today! 😊

Last week I was awarded Best Actual Play video at Minnesota Webfest!
What's an actual play video? Last spring, through dramatic improvisational gameplay, I acted out a story while streaming. That means I had no script! I only had my character (the last surviving astronaut on a spaceship) and an elevator pitch: you're being hunted by a creature aboard the ship. I learned with the live audience how my character's story would unfold and reacted in-character to the events.
I'm really proud of this achievement since this was a completely solo project (complete with greenscreens and two camera feeds)!
