I still can’t get over the fact that these two share the same VA. My mind was blown when someone pointed it out on twitter. I knew there was a reason why I was drawn to Solitus besides aesthetic reasons and now I know why. I need a Solitus route damn it, let me have my otome dreams of dating him.

14) Exceeded expectations

Thank you for asking this one, Anon! Because the games that exceeded my expectations are fun ones!

So one of the games that went beyond what I thought they would give me is Variable Barricade~!

I bought Variable Barricade on a whim while buying other otomes to add to my library. I read a non-spoiler review, saw some art, and thought it would be a very light rom-com sort of otome. Something to balance out darker stuff like Collar x Malice and Piofiore.

It turned out that the men were more than just quirky, they were fucking dumpster fires and weirdos! Each one approaches life differently and is flawed in that way. I’ve only played one route through to completion and while the guy wasn’t my favorite, he is still highly entertaining. It’s honestly a lot of fun playing the game and seeing the clash of personalities and thought processes of each character. The main character Hibari is stubborn and harsh at times (which apparently gets her flack from a Japanese audience but has endeared her to the West from what I’ve gathered), but deep down she’s a person who wants to find a worthwhile love. I love seeing her struggle to understand her suitors, help them change, and open herself up to optimism and romance.

There are some more intense subject matter in a couple routes which are handled… not the best.

But VariBarri is still very amazing. And it blew away the mediocre expectations I had for it going in. The art is gorgeous. The characters are engaging. The story arcs had me hooked. And I loved many of the twists and surprises.

19) Favorite villain/conflict

Before I answer, I must make it clear that I will be discussing spoilers of a game so…

Spoilers for Cafe Enchante! Proceed with caution if you don’t want to be spoiled for the dating sim Cafe Enchante!

Anyways!

While not a villain outright, Solitus from Il’s route in Cafe Enchante is one of my favorite villains.

He’s really more an antagonistic force than villain. God is the real villain of the route but God isn’t as cool or memorable as Solitus. Solitus has this deep bond of devotion with Il and it’s heartbreaking to see the lengths he’d go for his (non-romantic) partner. He can be mean with how he explains aspects of Il’s existence. But he gets redeemed in the end because it’s made clear that the whole time, he cared and was hurting from missing his friend.

Solitus doesn’t get a lot of focus outside of Il’s route but he gets enough attention when he does show up that I got attached real quick and enjoy his story, even if he acts against the heroes for most of the route.

auuuugh i need to write out some thoughts on il's route im going insane. his relationship with solitus had me crying and throwing up. it was super long but i honestly enjoyed all the world building and stuff. i saw that the game apparently has mixed reviews bc of how little fanservice there is and how the romance is more of a sub plot but like. thats how a majority of console otome games are? :sob: idk it rly says smthn that the cash cow games for otomate are like piofiore. piofiore has SUCH sloppy writing tbh and there are so many fucking weird and gross plot lines. the bad endings are completely out of pocket too. i enjoyed the characters but ngh there is so much that’s hard to get thru. ok im getting distracted back to il's route. i feel like he's very similar to shiraishi.... poor meow meow..... he rly only had 3 days of being free before he turned into a puppet again im So sad. im gonna be so sad playing misyr's route knowing he doesnt truly get to be himself....

did find it extremely funny that the character il based himself on was a spoiled rich aristocrat and the enchante regulars babied him to the point where he had the same mannerisms when he became his true self KSJNDGJNKMF

one last thing. im emotional over misyr calling il his cherished family i find it so endearing. thank you goodbye.

in general the romance between kotone and the LIs isn't really my favourite thing about enchante even though it is really good. the side characters and their stories are my favourite things about the game, then the worldbuilding slash lore, then we can get into the romance

like even outside of dromi (my favourite character in the whole game) can we talk about vennia and medio in general??? like yeah the canus romance was good but their story??? trying to save their sister????? also that fairies are apparently all canon nonbinary by default and some just feel more aligned to certain genders

god I forget the exact line but vennia being like. yeah gender doesn't really exist in medio or whatever. like can we explore that more please

anyway on that note canus is nonbinary he/they

personally I don't really see him as identifying as a man at all just like I don't see titania identifying as a woman at all. I think canus only really has a preference in pronouns due to his relationship with the human world. titania (hc) and vennia (canon) absolutely use any pronouns

also I know I was talking about medio but speaking of enchante side characters also I think solitus is ace and probably sex repulsed. maybe arospec as well.

il I feel like would also be ace but not sex repulsed and like if kotone brought it up he would be down. like he'd be like "oh I've seen that in one of my otome games :) ok" but he wouldn't really seek it out

Canus Espada

* He was a nervous wreck when the little one was born, but his flames burned bright when he first held his child

* You had to remind him that you need to feed the child before he gives them back.

* spends the first few years of the child's life in his mundane look, refusing to don his true armored persona until they are older. He also constantly manifests his helmet, very aware of how he scared you as a kid and doesnt want to scare his own

* He's really glad you cant see his face when he manifests his helmet so you cant see his expression when it's his turn to change diapers

* He always gets up when your child cries at night and will never wake you. You remind him that you can and should take turns but he refuses. As a father and a Knight it is his duty to console the child between the two of you when they cry at night.

* He is the same way when the child is older and they have a nightmare (you'll find him awake and alert at their bed in the morning, ready to scare off any potential spooks. He knows they arent real, he just wants his child to feel safe)

* he is the Stern but Fair type of Dad, and a bit overprotective.

* absolutely part of the PTA and has absolutely gotten into arguements with mothers over bake sale items

Il Fado de Rei

* Bless him, he tries

* you had twins. He is confusion about this but takes it in stride.

* Won't change diapers due to the smell

* he learned his lesson and makes sure he never puts magic in his singing, so he sings a lot to the twins.

* he did some reading before the twins were born, but it didn't prepare him at all.

* You'll have to wake him up if the twins start crying at night, but out of everyone he is the best at calming them down and getting back to sleep (without magic even!)

* you'll have to remind him that they are still to small to fly until they aren't. He is very eager to teach them how.

* He will go to any and all events for the twins as they grow. Choir? He is front seat, crying, with flowers. Karate? Front seat and cheering them on (and you keeping him from using magic to help the twins win). Spelling Bee? He will help them study. Graduation? Front row and crying. It's the only time you let him usemagic, to create feather-like confetti when the twins get their diplomas.

* a pretty laid back dad, he let's the twins get away with a lot more than he should. That said, the twins do know that if he is genuinely upset with them then they very much messed up.

Ignis Carbunculus

* Hope you wanted a lot of kids!

* Very much into playing with them and very active with the kids.

* if your kids cry at night he is up and to them right away. Pure instinct on his part, and quick to growl at anything that creaks while he's calming them down.

* Initially he has trouble changing diapers due to the smell (he will wear masks for awhile). By kid 6 he is changing diapers and yeeting it into the bin (that he moved under the nursery window outside by kid 3) like an absolute pro.

* the Fun Dad, he takes the kids out to run and play and do sports almost constantly. It gives you a much needed break and by the time they are back it is usually nap time due to how tired they are

* Will absolutely throw hands with other parents or with kids if he finds out someone is bullying one of his Pups. Stop him.

* You'll have to get your tubes tied in order to stop having kids btw.

Rindo Kaoru

* has a lot of reservations and fears in the beginning (due to his appearance), but is easily the most adept at being a dad.

* very much helps in his share of the duties, be it calming the kid at night or changing diapers. It's a team effort.

* like Canus, he tends to be stern and fair, but is more laid back about it and slightly less protective as they get older. He remembers how rambunctious he was as a kid and knows that sometimes you have to learn a lesson the hard way.

* The best at helping with homework, but doesn't go to Parent-Teacher Meetings for obvious reasons. He does make it to events but is usually in the far back and away from the other adults. He is always super proud though.

Misyr Rex

* If this is Pre-Reveal he is a nervous wreck when the kid is born. He can feel his heart stop and blood turn cold when you hold your daughter and he is sure you dont turn to ash.

* a pretty Fun Dad, he made sure to do his research and likes to use his magic to entertain his daughter (even if he is unsure she will ever use it)

* You'll be the one up with the child in the middle of the night since he has to return to his world. It breaks his heart but he doesnt have a choice

* he takes over diaper changing duty to make up for it.

* if it's post-route he is beaming from ear to ear.

* he worries a bit that your daughter might have your powers, but doesn't let it get to him and takes it one step at a time.

* walks her to school, helps her with homework, stays up with her at night as needed. He is a very attentive and supportive Dad and is very clearly loved in return.

*if you complain that he is being more of a parent then you he will admit it's because neither of you know if the child will outlast him by centuries due to your status, and he wants to make sure his daughter has lasting memories of him.

* He's pretty much the same way with any future kids and grandkids.

Solitus

* He tries to stay calm in the beginning but it's pretty clear he feels out of his depth when you give birth to his son

* he did the research, he thought he could handle it, but the first time his son cries in the middle of the night his heart is racing and he's terrified they are being hurt

* he gets over it, but still takes over night duties due to that anxiety

* you cant tell if he is effected by smelly diapers or not, he handles it very well. It is one of the few things the two of you take equal turns on though.

* isn't to keen on teaching his son to fly until they are much older, and by then your son is begging. He is just worried their wings might not support them

* a VERY good tutor to his son, you are going to have a very brainy child. He will attend events but don't expect him to get fired up

* will try to join the PTA. Do not let him

* seriously, do not let him

Asmodeus

* You have to talk him out of making the birth a national holiday.

* You aren't successful.

* The crib is in your shared room for the first few months so you both get up at night. You do worry he'd make it worse and are genuinely surprised at how loving and gentle when he rocks the child back to sleep.

* Hires someone specifically to change diapers. It's the one thing you instantly agree to

* he had private tutors lined up before you were even pregnant. Make sure you vet them before they start.

* He boasts about any and all accomplishments the child makes and will proudly display any and all trophies and ribbons. If you dont stop him he will make them national treasures.

* you dont stop him.

* Despite all of this, he is actually a really amazing father that is always there emotionally and physically for his child(ren). He is also very attentive to make sure his children grow up with more humility and more humble then you'd expect from him. He always stresses the importance that they become a future Ruler that the demons will respect and love, not fear or resent.

Things you shouldn't think about:

Spoilers for late game/routes

* Il probably spent the time between Souan forcing through the Gate and the MC opening it again hiding in the broken down Ark, terrified out of his mind.

* Hugging the MC in his introduction is probably the first major contact Misyr has had with another person where they didn't die as a result in thousands of years.

* Cafe Enchante is the first place that Ignis wasn't locked into a Fight or Flight Mode and could properly relax without needing to worry about something coming up and attacking him.

* Cafe Enchante is the first place Canus was able to go where he wasn't constantly reminded of how he is a social outcast in his world and everything there is terrified of him

* Misyr likely realized very quickly that Souan died after the Gate didn't open for a few days in a row. He likely counted the moments, praying that the MC would come open the Gate and as the months passed he likely was starting to give up hope.

* Mikado is essentially a ticking time bomb after every route but Rindo and Misyr's, and since Rindo didn't become a Non-Human in the other routes this means he will likely succeed in his plan if he snaps

* Ignis cannibalized his own people unknowingly and after his route it is heavily implied learning what he is resulted in him being to traumatized to eat even human food

* Souan likely never saw Misyr's Favorite Coffee Cup as Misyr likely realized that if the MC told her grandpa about that encounter Souan would have likely realized Misyr attempted to kill her and if he saw and recognized the cup then Souan likely would have forbidden him from crossing over to Enchante again

* Souan is likely the first person in thousands of years that Misyr was able to talk to where Misyr wasn't watching the other person die painfully while blaming Misyr for it in some way

* Misyr likely almost died the first time he took on his Demon King Persona, as he would have needed to practice it in his World which would have also told him it's possible for him to lose his immunity.

* the MC will die long before four out her possible five suitors due to their natures as Non Humans and in the case of the fifth one she will outlive them no matter what

* The MC becomes at least partially Non Human in 2 out of the 5 Routes, meaning she will likely outlive most of the human friends/family she has made in her life in those routes

* Mikado looks the way he does due to experiments he has done on himself combined with feeding Kuu in an attempt to cure her condition

* God likely tampered with Solitus physically to prevent his wings from turning black from Falling very quickly after assigning him to Il after their creation in order to ensure God could properly emotionally and mentally manipulate Solitus. God likely also fostered Il and Solitus to be very dependent on each other to manipulate them both until Il became self aware and more independent.

Canus Espada

* Canus.EXE has stopped working

* He knew it was possible, Changlings like Kariya are proof of that and to be honest the two of you are intimate fairly frequently

* Will need to sit down and process what you told him though. Him? A father? A baby? In you?

* After the initial wave of surprise and panic he is overjoyed though. Quick to carry you princess style up and down the stairs, get you anything you need (even 1am Craving Runs), and in general is very attentive to you during the pregnancy.

* Once your pregnancy starts to show his flames are generally bright with pride and he likes to stroke your stomach. Especially when the little tyke kicks. 

Il Fado de Rei

* He’ll sit there and stare at you for a few moments. 

* You start to worry that maybe he doesn’t understand or that he’s unhappy until he suddenly just bursts into tears.

* He cries for awhile, not really able to get words out so you’ll have to comfort him in private for a bit

* In that quiet moment he’ll put his hands gently on your stomach and start to sing in a quiet voice. A child’s lullaby with a bright and loving smile on his face.

* He’ll work even harder to improve himself, even roping in Epilogi and Solitus. He is going to be a father so he needs to be as dependable as one!

* Make sure you’ve talked to him at length that the kiddo might not be able to fly or use magic though

* starts humming children’s nursery rhymes a lot

Ignis Carbunculus

* You’ll have to tell him more than once before it clicks. 

* The first time he isn’t going to have a single idea what you mean and chances are you’ll have to explain it to him or he’ll pretend he understands and goes to ask someone else later

* Once he does realize his face and neck will burn hotter than his flaming ears

* You two go at it like rabbits in spring trying to repopulate the planet after Noah’s Flood, so in all fairness this isn’t a surprise to anyone at all outside of Ignis

* Will admit he is a bit scared. Parenting isn’t a common thing in Bestia due to the high mortality rate and he doesn’t even remember his own parents and the one parental figure he had wasn’t... great.

* But he loves you with all his heart and he already loves the little wolf inside you and so he immediately asks Rindo for help

* When he sees the noticeable bump in your stomach he also learns something new about himself. Be prepared to have a LOT of kids. 

Rindo Kaoru

* When you tell him, Rindo’s blood turns to ice and he can’t breathe. You have to help him sit down as he tries to process this

* He loves you. He loves you so much but there is so much uncertainty. He wasn’t even sure if it was possible due to his new body but now here you are with the positive pregnancy test (6 of them, all different brands) and he is so afraid

* What will this do to you? Will the kid even survive? Will they be human or part nonhuman like him?

* You try to comfort him, but you can tell he needs a second to process.

* Mid panic he asks if you thought of terminating the pregnancy, that the child might do you more harm then good or what if it comes out a freak like him?

* He’ll calm down and think about it rationally eventually, and will apologize for what he said. He loves you and he loves the child the two of you will bring into this world. 

* The future is uncertain, but you can tell he is pouring his heart and soul into making sure everything will be better 

* Rindo swears to himself that he will do everything he can to make sure that his and your child will never feel unloved. 

Misyr Rex

* His reaction depends on when it happens

*If it is pre-Reveal on his route then he is internally panicking. A lot.

* With what he really is and what his body does he is scared. What if the child has his ability? What if... what if it looks like him? His true form?

* But you are glowing and happy when you tell him, asking him if he wants to help pick out a name and he feels the panic melt away. 

* He has to tell you, of course, and works to plan out a process if the kid is more like him then you

* If it is Post-Reveal... Insert “I Impregnated a Planet!” Joke here

* Though he will admit he is confused as to HOW you could be pregnant (your physical form isnt technically you after all) and then goes red when he realizes some of the... other, experimental, ways he’s relieved himself technically ‘in you’ when you got creative and wonders if that is how the kid could have been conceived. 

* Chooses to purge those thoughts from his mind forever

* Ignis immediately asks how you could be pregnant and just makes it worse for Misyr though

* Overall he is Confused Excited

* Also he is extremely happy that this means even when he eventually leaves you, you will have someone there (be it the child between you, or a grandchild from said child, or even great grandchildren) and until his soul is reborn and can return to you he can take comfort that you will at least have the family the two of you created to keep you company.

Solitus

* .... Ok

* He’s not ok

* Acts stoic and like it doesn’t phase him at all but you can tell by the ay his wings are fluffing up that he is internally having a meltdown

* He understands that these things CAN happen, but didn’t even consider a possible Human/Angel hybrid

* Immediately begins researching childcare. How to care for the child, how to help them mentally mature, how to deal with baby vomit and get it out of clothes

* He spends so much time prepping for the kid he almost forgets that he also needs to help you DURING the pregnancy. 

* He’s trying, and will give a genuine and loving smile as he caresses your stomach in the privacy of your room

* Do not let him pick the child’s name

Asmodeus

* Congrats! EVERYONE KNOWS and probably has tinnitus now

* Immediately and LOUDLY declares it to the world, every world he can

* Stop him before he makes it an official holiday in the demon world

* His generals? Your new aides. They keep anything even remotely threatening away from you during your pregnancy. 

* In general he is loud and overjoyed about his future heir, and is quick to boast about how amazing your child is going to be because of course it will be! He is their father and the most gorgeous woman in all the worlds is their mother! They will be powerful and beautiful!

* As the pregnancy goes on he will get nervous around you though. Humans are so fragile and a pregnant human even moreso. 

* As much as you want to offer to let him rub your stomach so he can feel the kicking, by the time it gets to that point he is to afraid of hurting your unborn child so he will refuse until you offer to hold his hand and guide him

* You are going to have the most pimped out nursery in all the worlds. He is not going to spare any expense for the future Demon Prince(ss)

* Do NOT let him pick the nanny unless you want something that looks like it came out of Lovecraft helping raise your kid
