Boundaries of Glass

When I came home, I thought the distance would drown the pain, but the weight of it only grew heavier. The nights were long and empty, and the bottle of Lexapro on my nightstand whispered promises of an end I wasn’t sure I wanted. I tried again, taking more than I knew I should, hoping to slip away into that quiet place where the memories of you couldn’t reach me. But my body betrayed me, fighting through the side effects, the dizziness, the sickness that clung to me like regret. I survived again, though I never told you.

A year and a half passed, a blur of empty days and sleepless nights, until one day, I heard your voice again. It was as if time hadn’t passed at all, as if the silence had been a dream we both woke up from. We rebuilt something, not quite the same as before, but enough to make me hope that maybe, just maybe, we could find our way back.

We fell into old habits, our bodies knowing the language our words no longer spoke. You’d come over, and for a while, it felt like we were whole again. But I could always feel it— the plexiglass boundary you put between us, clear enough to see through, but solid enough to keep me out. I wanted more, wanted the closeness we once had, but I knew you couldn’t give it. You were there, but never fully mine.

Two years passed in this strange limbo, and then everything shattered again. I got the call— you had tried to end it, had taken a blade to your wrists, and my world stopped. Without thinking, I called a friend, begged them to rush to you, and then dialed 911, my hands trembling, my heart breaking. They got to you just in time, saved you from the edge like I had done once before.

You were committed to the hospital, a 51/50, and I was left with the weight of waiting. Every day stretched longer than the last, the unease gnawing at me as I wondered what you were thinking, if you were angry, if you felt betrayed by the hands that saved you. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t shake the image of you, alone in that sterile room, while I sat outside, helpless again, wishing I could break through the glass and pull you back to me.

But the glass held. It always does.
