The fusion AU sounds very fun! If they fused before the exam, does the rest of 1A know they're two people, or is it a complete surprise when they manage to unfuse? I imagine Aizawa would know from their paperwork—he has two names in his PowerSchool app, so to speak—but I wonder if he'd leave it up to the boys to tell the rest of the class.
I'm also curious about what name they use, both family and given.
none of the class know for sure, and idk if my friend and I ever decided if aizawa knew or not? He definitely doesn't know in the two 8 year olds in the trench coat version because the way they're eventually discovered is that he uses his quirk on them and poof. But I think for both versions, it gets revealed to the rest of the class for the first time when they unfuse like halfway into the the school year and it's very chaotic
I think we just fused their names together and were calling him Katsuku Midorigou lol
#ask#two eight year olds in a trench coat au was made for silly reasons and I love it with all my heart#the rest of the au is just “how ethical is it to let two (2) eight year olds attend high school and become child soldiers”#“we were already kinda pushing it before with 15yr olds ngl”#fusion au#two 8 year olds in a trench coat

The elder men spoke low. They took a vote and said no. They turned around real slow. Where did they go? Where did they go? And the question oh, the question: can the kid keep his eyes, if the fire doesn't die? They said no.

1: Magic is a Metaphor < 2: Morgana is a Lesbian < 3: Merlin is Gay < 4: Arthur is Bi
Do you remember when you were bullied in middle school? Because if you're reading this, I think it's fair to assume that you were. And your parents would say to you, 'that boy is just being mean to you because he likes you'. That's what this is.
Arthur is just so repressed. He has really bad daddy issues, and he doesn't know how to express his emotions, and he's really uncomfortable with physical intimacy, especially with other men, especially with Merlin. And this isn't me trying to psychoanalyse away his heterosexuality. It is a very evident part of his character.
And another big part of his character is that he has inherited all of these bigoted ideas about magic from his father that he has to work to overcome. Because, of course, Arthur himself is born of magic, but his dad is so ashamed of it that he hides the true circumstances of his birth from Arthur. Honestly, I don't know exactly how that would fit into this whole metaphor. I do have a half-formed theory that it could be interpreted as an allegory for intersex identity, I know that a lot of people headcanon Arthur as trans, so idk there could be something there. But regardless, it is only through his relationship with Merlin that he is able to overcome this magicphobia, because he realises: how could it be wrong when everything about Merlin is so right. And I just feel like there's a metaphor in there somewhere.
Of course, I have to mention this iconic quote from the audio commentary of the final episode: when the executive producer refers to Arthur taking off his royal seal to give back to Guinevere as passing over "the last vestige of his heterosexu- oh sorry, I mean his marriage." So, they knew exactly what they were doing.
I also thought I would just draw your attention to the fact that at one point Arthur says, "I only care about my men, they're more than friends, more than brothers." Now, I think we can all agree that out of context, that is a very gay thing to say, and yet somehow the context is even gayer, because Arthur is pretending to be talking about the Knights of the Round Table, but he's actually talking about Merlin, how Merlin is the only person he cares about, more than a friend. And then Merlin responds, "I understand. I wish I didn't, but I do." It's barely subtext at that point. This of course, brings me to my final argument:
Arthur risked his life to save Merlin at least eight times. It could be more than that, I genuinely lost count. And you have to keep in mind that Arthur is the King of Camelot and he doesn't have any heirs. It is quite important that he stays alive. And yet anytime that Merlin is in the slightest bit of danger, he will just drop everything to protect him.
And it's really only in those moments where he's faced with the thought of losing Merlin that he shows him genuine emotion. Such as in this scene (which was cut out of 4x02 purely because it was too gay) where Arthur is planning to sacrifice himself to protect Merlin, again, and he gives Merlin his mother's sigil, the only thing he has left of his dead mum and he wants Merlin to have it as something to remember him by. Also, apparently in medieval times giving someone your family crest was basically a marriage proposal, so that's pretty gay.
You know what else is pretty gay? Telepathically communicating with Merlin and then immediately leaving Gwen in the middle of an active war. This is literally the last time that Arthur and Gwen ever see each other. Poor Gwen.
In conclusion, Merlin is the story of gay sorcerers and bisexual knights getting into love triangles. Everyone in this show is queer and you cannot tell me otherwise.
#because I realise this is the first post you'll see on the dash: this is all taken directly from a tiktok I made over a year ago#my thoughts on this point especially have developed a bit since then. and this is written for a more entry-level tiktok audience#so it's very lukewarm takes to my fellow soldiers in the trenches#but I'm not expecting this to get much notice and idc/idk how to articulate my thoughts better so just take it for what it is#arthur pendragon#merthur#bbc merlin#merlin#merlin meta#the magic of metaphor

why is every ironwood take i read the strangest in the world. why does every post about this guy (that isn't from an ironwood stan) read like an argumentative essay for why he's hitler and then you see the points being made and it's like. oooh he made robots(?) and didn't want the world-ending god powers to free roam(?). what an ass(?)
#rwde#sorry im genuinely not a big ironwood guy but ironwood posts are in the trenches what is going on in there hello#like um. idk i think robots for soldiers is awesome and humane personally but that's just my worldview#<- not considering the in-universe way robots work (e.g. penny being sentient)

Odysseus' reintegration into the world bound by mortal limitations foregrounds both his age and the distance he has traveled. The shipwrecked sailor who manages to crawl ashore naked on Scheria, bereft of companions, possessions, any token of identity — of all but the bare ember of vitality (cf. 5.488-90 — a lonely spark in a pile of ashes) — meets the young Nausikaa, whose life (like that of Telemachus) is just opening to the possibilities before her. The scene in which Odysseus, awakened by sounds that evoke in him fears of hostile men, faces instead a group of teenage girls playing ball, is both comic and poignant as it measures the difference between their expectations and stages of experience. Later, as he is challenged to compete in an athletic contest, Odysseus acknowledges the toll that age and journeying inevitably take. This is not, then, the epic of the beautiful death (one way to read the Iliad (e.g., see Vernant 1991: 50-74)) but the epic of timeworn, embraceable life.
John Miles Foley, A Companion to Ancient Epic, 2005.
#The Odyssey#Odysseus#John Miles Foley#A Companion to Ancient Epic#quotations#analyses#bestie... the way this chapter changed my life#every page of the Odyssey already makes me sob. be it w joy or despair or some other ineffable poignant nostalgia#but Foley gave me the words to say how & why#tattoo is not enough. gonna get timeworn embraceable life carved into my bones#rhapsody 5 of the Odyssey is actually something that can be so personal#he's a middle-aged war hero w severe trauma!#& crashes out naked & filthy into a gaggle of teenage girls bc he thinks he hears soldiers surrounding him! fuck!!!#strategist & war hero of epic fame colliding into the world of a fairytale princess centuries before fairytales even existed#the scene is so pathetic (in the sense of moving/pitiable). so sweet. so funny. & even a bit silly#my heart grows three sizes every time I read it. & then explodes ❤️🔥💥🔥 such is life once u write a thesis on epics#the contrast of the rich jovial life of Nausikaa as a young princess playing ball games w her maids#& Odysseus fighting literally in the trenches just to stay alive. just to ensure the spark of his life does not go out. not to Girls und Panzer or anything but I think a WH40k Chimera tank that's been taken over by some 13 year old girls would be very funny.
#warhammer 40k#wh40k#and lets pretend they wouldnt mess it up because NOBODY in this setting really knows what they're doing#the girls don't do any worse than people we're supposed to take seriously#boarding school is cancelled forever but the tank that smashed through the wall is just. sitting there. beckoning.#its a horrible setting where there's lots of child soldiers actually#also no 'they die horribly' its MUCH funnier if they just get disabled sometimes and fix it somehow and show up again. and again.#it makes everybody else dying look worse#you wouldn't deploy 6 girls in an iron trench coat would you??? (yes.)#I considered a leman russ but a transport is MUCH funnier. awkward. a bunch of little girls picked you up & they know what they're doing...#its also faster which is comedy by default#rolling up in formation with Ciaphas Cain's salamander on the road with toast in your mouth 'oh no im late for tank class!!'#and he realizes he is 'fleeing' in the wrong direction. again.

A Ukrainian soldier's experience of sleeping in a trench
Curled up, hugging myself below the knees, I fell asleep in the trench I had just dug with my own hands, though it wasn’t finished yet. My body said “enough.” Two hours of sleep in the past 24 hours and the physical exhaustion from constant, intense effort forced me to take an hour for recovery. The earthen walls shielded me from the autumn wind. The right combination of clothing, a thick mat, and the fetal position allowed me to disconnect for a while. Barely opening my eyes, I felt warmth instead of the bone-chilling cold. I pulled the sleeping bag higher. Wrapped myself even tighter. I know I dreamt something, but I can’t recall what. The value of warmth was a practical necessity, not a luxury. One of the guys had brought his own sleeping bag and covered me. Someone else later took a photo. As a memory. No staging. Just as it was. We often photograph each other to remember moments that civilian life would never offer us. When I fully woke, I tried to find out who did it. No one said, “it was me.” I thanked everyone, openly, sincerely. The guys continued digging. I rejoined them. This is what true brotherhood looks like. It doesn’t seek recognition. It creates an environment where people and relationships can truly thrive. Brotherhood is about looking out for each other. It’s the hand extended, the shoulder offered, the conversation listened to, the last Snickers shared, the single packet of drip coffee, the “rest, I’ll cover for you,” the spontaneous photo for the memories. I know that at first glance this photo might evoke death. But it’s about the value of life. Some will feel pity, others sadness. I want this photo to be a call for you — to stop complaining and keep pushing, no matter what. If fate grants me the chance to see the successful end of this war with my own eyes, my loved ones will often see this photo and hear about that cold morning in an unknown patch of woods behind forever dead villages. But in that moment, it was warm, and there were so many warm hearts, truly alive, people close to me. And being there, sleeping like that — it was a gift from fate. No matter how much contrast there is in all these words.
